  • nly 125 miles north of LosAngeles and adjacent to the1804 Old Mission Santa Ins

(now a National Historic LandmarkDistrict), Solvang thrived and settlerscarried on Danish traditions of lan-guage, folk dancing, music, and cui-sine. Bethania Lutheran Church, dedicated in 1928, was built in the ar-chitectural style of Denmarks BishopGrundtvig churches and features awooden ship hanging from the nave, still popular with visitors today.

Solvang feels like northern Europe, yet in the center of California. Just asit does in Copenhagen, Denmarks na-tional symbol the Little Mermaid

bronze sculpture (in size authorizedreplica) welcomes visitors at the inter-section of Mission Drive and AlisalRoad. As the 20th century progressedand Solvangs population grew, morebuildings began to reect the Danishfarm-style architecturethe cross-beamed bindingsvaerk, timbers fram-ing either brick or stucco, handsomelycarved eaves and doorways, and roof-ing of blue-green copper or thatchmade of wood shingles cut jagged atthe edges. Windmills of all sizes catchthe rst and last light throughout thevillage. Danish tradition holds that thepresence of a stork on a rooftop wardsoff lightning and brings good luck

that continues to smile on Solvang andall its visitors still.

After the conclusion of World WarII, idyllic Solvang was discovered bythe media and described as a spotlessDanish village that blooms like a roseand enticed travelers to experience itfor themselves. The Danish Days annualfestival emerged in 1936 and continuesto commemorate Solvangs heritageduring the third weekend of every Sep-tember. Festivals are traditional partsof Solvangs charmfrom the Taste ofSolvang every March to the Old MissionSanta Ins Fiesta each August and Julefestduring December. (See Annual Eventson page 41)

  • VISITING THE VALLEY

BallardBallard is considered a tiny rural town (population 467),but it holds some of the valleys most treasured gems. Firstoff, a Little Red Schoolhouse thats been educating youngBallard residents since 1883. Today its one the top-per-forming schools in Santa Barbara County and the schoolbell still rings to summon students. Plus, its home to TheBallard Inn & Restaurantone of the most romantic B&Bs in the region with Chef/Owner Budi Kazali creating delec-table wine-country fusion meals. Its well worth a brief visitto Ballard to see historic homes, churches and experiencethe serenity and charm of a well-preserved country burg.

Los OlivosCalifornia history melds with modern-day art galleries, wine

tasting rooms and upscale shops in Los Olivos, a picture-perfectcountry town in the northeast part of the valley (population

1,132). Its a laid-back place where locals sit on wooden porchesand chat with friends and visitors; and most people wear jeans,

cowboy boots and casual attire. The town dates back to the 1860s,when the stagecoach route began to pass through. Historic Matteis

Tavern was built to house and feed passengers and Victorian homes and businesses cluster nearby around the community

hub at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Alamo Pintado Avenue, centered by a agpole. Vineyards, lavender farms,

orchards, ranches and horse trails surround the town. This is a fantastic place to visit for a one-stop wine country ex-

perience. Many historic structures hold distinctly modern enter-prises. Sip local vintages at a tasting room (choose among more

than 30 within a 5-block area) and sample locally grown olive oils(Los Olivos means the olives). Dine at a casual caf or gourmet

restaurant. Shop for contemporary art and locally made gifts. Popinto the Wildling Art Museum to view the best in American wilder-

ness art with a variety of changing exhibitions and programs.

Santa YnezIs this 2012, or have we traveled in a time warp back to thedays of blacksmith shops, feed stores, and stores with horseshitched to posts in the front? In the vintage cowboy town ofSanta Ynez (population 4,418), its sometimes hard to tell.It looks much the same as it did in the late 1800s, withfalse-front buildings and of course, a historic saloon. How-ever, this ole cowboy town also boasts plenty of conven-iences for modern-day trail riders. Restaurants serve upvarious options for diners, from casual pancakes and wafes(beloved by locals) to steaks, Italian fare, Latin cuisine andhigh-end locavore feasts. Modern shops and galleries linehorse-shoe embedded streets.

Dont miss the Santa Ynez Valley Historical Society Museumand Parks-Janeway Carriage House for a fascinating dose ofOld West heritage and myriad events year-round. The Chumash Casino Resort is adjacent to the township with 24/7gaming, live entertainment, dining and a luxurious hotel.

Old Santa Ynez Day every June is just one wonderful timeto visit, when the town celebrates its heritage with a streetfair, parade and country-western entertainment. Cyclistsgravitate to Santa Ynez as well for the world-class trainingcenter, cycling tours or just the chance to ride a bike alongserene country roadstheres plenty to see and do in thetown that gave the Valley its name (Saint Agnes in English.)

  • Los AlamosSurrounded by ranches, farms and vineyards at the northern entryto the Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos (population 1,890) is located at the junction of US Highway 101 and State Route 135. The mainthoroughfare known as Bell Street is only seven blocks long yet re-ects as much Old West heritage as any small town on CaliforniasCentral Coast. Founded in 1876, two ranchers each donated part oftheir land to create the town site.

Named Los Alamos (Spanish for the cottonwoods) that stillgrace the area, it looks and feels like an 1880s stagecoach and trainstopfortunately both have been preserved as the Union Hotel & Saloon and the Depot Antique Mall & Pub today. Other lodgings include two motels and a Victorian-style Bed & Breakfast. Buildingsold and new house art galleries, one-of-a-kind shops, wine tastingrooms and restaurants for every type of diner from locavore to carni-vore. In September, Los Alamos Old Days honors the town's 1876founding with a weekend celebration including a paradean excellenttime to wrangle a visit with free fun for the whole family.

  • Planted and nurtured with exceptional care, Santa Ynez Valley grapes are

lovingly crafted into world-class wine sipped and savored around the world.

    Amazing Grapes

ine tasting and touring is a unique, memorableand not-to-be-missed experience here. SantaYnez Valley is one of four distinct American

Viticultural Areas (AVA)also known as wine appella-tionsin Santa Barbara Countys wine country. The othersare Santa Maria Valley, Sta. (Santa) Rita Hills and HappyCanyon of Santa Barbara (tucked in the east end of SantaYnez Valley). Together, they comprise 23,000+ acres ofgrape vineyards that annually produce more than a millioncases of wineincluding popular Chardonnay, Pinot Noirand Syrah, but also top-notch Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc,Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier and dozens ofother varietals. The unusual east-west orientation of theareas coastal mountains creates transverse valleys that funnelcool Pacic Ocean air and fog inland during the late after-noon and evening. The resulting hot sunny days and coolnights are a winning combination for both wine grapes andwine tasters. Since missionaries planted the rst wine grapeshere in the early 19th century, through Prohibition to themodern era of viticulture that began in the 1960s, areawinemakers have combined traditional techniques with cut-ting-edge innovations, most recently with an emphasis onsustainable and organic methods. The Oscar-winning 2004movie Sideways shone a bright Hollywood spotlight on theCentral Coast wine scene and spurred visitors to explore theregion, which now rivals other blockbuster wine-touringdestinations. (For a list of tasting rooms and wine bars open tothe public without appointments, see the Wine Tasting Guideon page 56.)

Touring Wine CountryMost of the 90+ wineries here are small boutique opera-tions and many are family-owned. Visitors enjoy the re-laxed, friendly atmosphere where its not unusual to end upchatting with the winemaker or owner in the tasting roomeither at the winery or in townall within a 2- to 20-minute drive. Hit the wine trails (design your own itinerary

or sign up with a local tour company for a professionallyguided tour in a limousine, jeep, van or private sedan. Thelocally-owned and operated Stagecoach Company Wine Toursis one of the dozens that offer daily wine-tasting excursions(See Touring on page 54).

On-site vineyard tasting rooms range from rustic con-verted barns to lavish Mediterranean-style villas. At SanfordWinery & Vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills, the tasting room andits spacious terraces are adjacent to the stone and adobe win-ery and estate vineyards. Foley Estates Vineyard, also in Sta.Rita Hills appellation, is home to a 3,500- square-foot tast-ing room and event center with spectacular vistas of moun-tain ranges and oak-studded hills. Bridlewood Estate Wineryblends rustic, Span-ish-style architecturewith a modern, arti-san winery in a formerArabian horse ranch.
