wehavebeguntoamplifythewaysweconnectpeopletofoodby:

•establishingmultipleproducehubsthroughoutbothcounties,

which are like neighborhood “farmers’ markets” for local

agenciesservinglow-incomeindividuals

• expanding our “grocery Rescue” program which makes

excess food from local grocery stores available to

neighborhoodpantries,sheltersandsoupkitchens

•increasingouroutreachtoindividualswhoqualifyforfederal

foodstamps,successfullyenrollingnearly6,000individuals

intheprogram

As we continue to evolve, one constant is our commitment to

stretchingeverydonateddollarasfarasitcango.secondHarvest

ispositionedtoscaleouroperations, to improveourefficiency

andtodrivedownourcostperpoundoffooddistributed…allof

whichwillincreaseourimpact.

we started by adding a new facility – a produce hub and

volunteer center – which also nearly quadrupled our available

coolerspace.For the first time in our history, fresh fruits and

vegetables accounted for more than 50% of the food provided

by Second Harvest.

ironically, even as we added walls, we committed ourselves

to a “newvisionof how.”we aredetermined to reachbeyondourwallstoexploitthecapacityofourvastnetwork,strengthen

our collaborations by forging non-traditional partnerships, and

redoubleoureffortstoconnectpeopletofoodwheretheylive,

learn,workandplay.

nationally, 70 billion pounds of food is wasted every year, far

morethanisneededbythe49millionpeoplewhostrugglewith

hunger.youdon’thavetobea“numbersperson”tofigureout

thatthereisenoughfoodavailabletofeedourhungryneighbors.

“newvisionofhow”istosupplementourhighlyefficientphysical

distributionoffoodbyadoptingnewtechnology,orchestrating

win-wincollaborationsandconnectingmorepeopletofoodthat

Although the reasons for hunger are complicated, feeding a family in need is not.

Becauseofyourhelpandgenerosity,lastyearwewereabletoprovide41millionmealstochildren,

seniorsandhard-workingadultswhohadnowhereelsetoturn.weservednearlyaquarterofa

millionpeopleeverymonthlastyear.it’sstaggeringtoknowthatoneinevery10peopleinsilicon

valleyandonthePeninsulareceivedatleastsomeoftheirfoodfromthefoodBank.

WORKLow-income adults can conveniently use an “eBt Card,” a monthly electronic

benefitscard issuedthroughCalfresh(formerlyknowas foodstamps), tobuy

foodatmanymarketsandfoodstoresclosetowheretheyliveorwork.

Hunger is a big problem in our community but the good news is, it’s solvable. there’splentyoffoodinourregion.we’reworkingtoend

localhungerbyconnectingourneighborsinneedtonutritiousfood

wheretheylive,learn,workandplay.

About five years ago, i stopped in to second Harvest

foodBankinsanCarlostomakeadonation.Atthattime,

they asked if i would like to take a tour and learn more

about the programs they offer to help children in our

community.itwasthenthatilearnedabouttheshareyour

Lunchdriveandhowmanylocalchildrenareaffectedby

hungerbecausetheygowithoutlunchduringthesummer.

ithoughtkidsshouldjustbeabletoenjoysummerandnot

worryabouthavingfoodtoeat.

55% of the funding to Second Harvest comes from caring individuals.

wheniwastoldthata$10donationcouldprovidelunchfor

20children,idecidedtotakeactionbydonatingmonthly

asamemberofthemonthlyHarvestClubtohelpensure

thatnochildgoeshungry.iamgratefultosecondHarvest

fortheinspirationthatonesmallactcanmakeapositive

while kristen and i occasionally debate the merits of

different philanthropic and political organizations we

support, we are completely unanimous in our view that

second Harvest provides an essential service in our

communityanddoessoefficientlyandeffectively.it’sthe

onecheckweneverhesitatetowrite.Andwhenwelearned

that Bruce springsteen was endorsing the organization

throughacontributionofhisown -backstagepasses to

hisshowinsanjose-weimmediatelyboughtticketsfor

second Harvest’s “lottery.” Having been fans since our

college days, we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to see

the Boss live while helping out our favorite charity. we

werethrilledtowinthepassesandtospendafewminuteswithBruceaftertheconcert,butevenwithoutthatexperience,

wewouldhavebeenhappytoknowourcontributionwasbeingputtosuchgooduse.ourthankstoBruceandtosecond

everyone can relate to and an important

lesson to our children about the needs of a

communityrighthereinourbackyard.teaching

young children the idea of need and giving is

difficult because of their lack of exposure and

maturity.Beingconsistentinoursupportofan

our family has supported the food Bank and its

commitmenttopeopleinneedforovertwentyyears.one

ofourson’searliestmemoriesisdrivingaroundduringthe

holidays,pickingupbarrelsoffoodatchurchesandschools,

and taking that food to second Harvest. experiences

like that reinforced the importanceofgivingback to the

communityforallourchildren.

the headlines are encouraging as we continue

to climb out of the great Recession. However,

notwithstanding that good news, the need for

local food assistance has continued to edge up.

second Harvest and our Board of directors have

gonetogreatlengthstoensurethatweareready

to respond to the struggles facing the families

and communities in which we live. thanks to the

incredible generosity of our donors last year, we

were able to spend an unbudgeted $400,000 to

buy additional food for the hungry. As noted on

page 18 of this report, we also purchased nearly

$65,000inshelving,refrigeratorsandstorageunits

forkeypartneragenciestogrowtheircapacityfor
