Milwaukee Christian Center2 32012 Annual Report

Milwaukee Christian Center (MCC) is on the move and 2012 was a year of both stability and change. In terms of stability, we are pleased to report over 10,000 individuals and their families were served by MCC. Youth, elderly, homeowners, business owners, young adults seeking work experience and families in need of emergency food assistance accessed services that remain available to anyone walking through our doors. This annual report will detail what help we offered and how people benefitted from those services.

There have been two significant changes. The first one is that MCC committed to buying a building located at 807 S. 14th Street. This new home needed some work but offers twice the amount of space available at 2137 W. Greenfield. As of May 2013 we have occupied the new space; and we are working on getting it ready for an open house this fall.

The second major change occurred in October 2012 as the Board hired Karen Higgins as Interim Executive Director to assist the organization through a leadership transition. After three months the Board of Directors opted to hire her permanently as Executive Director. She returns after serving as Executive Director from 1997-2002.

Making a new home work in a different neighborhood is a challenge. There are pictures to be hung and second floor modifications to be completed for programming purposes. Then there is looking at what new opportunities can evolve as we situate ourselves off of 14th and National.

We promise to be good stewards of your support and we look forward to all that unfolds in 2013 and beyond as we work to compassionately build community on the near South Side of Milwaukee and beyond.

Message fromour Leadership

MCC’s youth development programs provide a secure and nurturing environment for at-risk youth to participate in academic enrichment, recreation, social development, leadership and community involvement.

Our Kids Place after school program provides social development and academic enrichment for children ages 7 to 12. This program, housed at our main site, 807 S. 14th Street, offers recreation, mentoring, cooking classes, field trips, health and wellness activities, computer instruction, cultural and arts opportunities, a Youth Leadership Council and a Kids Café on Thursday evenings.

• In 2012 Kids Place served 110 children• Forest Home Avenue School Safe Places Program

served 100 children• 65 children attended Doerfler School Safe Places

Program

The Youth Development Program (YDP) is an after school program for children ages 6 to 18 at the Kosciuszko Community Center. Youth participate in tutoring, sports leagues, Safe Nights, computer instruction, dance, cultural arts and environmental programs, open gym and a Youth Leadership Council.

• In 2012, 260 youth ages 6 to 18 attended programs at Kosciuszko Community Center

• Boxer Carlos Martinez ranked 3rd in the nation in his weight class and was chosen to compete in the National Junior Olympics in Mobile, Alabama

• Continued collaboration with other UMCOM agencies to offer youth sports leagues, including boys and girls basketball and coed softball for the first time

• Held our most successful summer day camp ever measured by number of youth served and quality of programs

• Excellent attendance at monthly Family Night gathering strengthened our connections to the families served

MCC provides two juvenile justice programs for youth who have committed minor offenses such as retail theft or truancy: the First Time Juvenile Offender Program and the Community Service Options Program. Both are designed to prevent future offenses by making young people more accountable for their behavior. The programs help them understand the impact of their actions on others and enable them to make reparations to their victims.

Our First Time Juvenile Offender Program has a successful track record. Case managers offer mentoring, tutoring, anger management, alcohol, tobacco and other drug education (ATODA) and life skills workshops. In 2012, ninety-five percent of youth in the program did not reoffend while enrolled.

• From July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013 the Community Service Options Program served 139 youth between ages 12-19 years old

• The First Time Juvenile Offender Program served 82 youth during that same period

• Both programs emphasize youth and family assets while working with participants to set goals and create an individualized coordinated service plan

Open Monday through Friday, 9am-2pm, MCC’s Senior Center offers engaging activities that keep seniors healthy, physically independent, and socially connected. Programs include exercise and nutrition classes, citizenship assistance, ESL, weekly health checks, recreational activities and outings.

The Senior Center specializes in Southeast Asian services – with bilingual staff providing translation, interpretation and a weekday Asian meal program for Hmong and Lao seniors. African-American, Latino and Caucasian seniors also enjoy activities and the meal program.

• 78 individuals over the age of 60 served during 2012, 85% Southeast Asian

• 8,857 midday meals served to 84 seniors• 62 seniors received health checks• 50 seniors attended exercise classes• 14 seniors attended ESL classes• 77 seniors participated in Organized Recreation

Our Family Care program offers comprehensive and flexible long-term care for low income elderly persons. Our case managers and nurses work to foster independence and quality of life while recognizing the need for support. Bi-lingual case managers help Southeast Asian seniors access a wide range of services.

• In 2012 we worked with 130 members, about half of whom were of Southeast Asian descent

• Of the 20 managed care units who contracted with the Milwaukee County Department of Family Care in 2012, MCC tied for 5th place in our overall quality review

MCC’s Emergency Food Pantry provides staples (consisting of a 3 to 5 day supply of food) to families living primarily in the 53204 and 53215 zip codes. In addition, we provide diapers and formula to at-risk infants, as well as supplemental commodity boxes for targeted elderly and eligible women with children. Notably, the pantry provides culturally appropriate food to Hmong, Lao and Latino families – all while communicating in their native languages.

In May of 2013 our Emergency Food Pantry became a Choice Pantry. Now clients choose what they take home. Offering choice, along with culturally appropriate food, is working as clients choose items instead of receiving a box of pre-selected food.

• 4,964 people visited the Emergency Food Pantry in 2012

• Distributed diapers to 332 infants

• Infant formula provided to 138 families

• 683 stock boxes distributed through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program

MCC’s Neighborhood Improvement Project (NIP) provides a multi-faceted approach to improving properties and lives in Milwaukee neighborhoods. In addition to a ramp building program for individuals with physical disabilities and a graffiti removal service, NIP offers owner-occupied home rehabilitation correcting damaged, defective or unsafe conditions; allowing low income families to remain in their homes and helping to stabilize neighborhoods.

• 3 ramps were built • Graffiti was removed from 933 properties• 26 low-income homeowners received home rehab

services

Our Youthbuild program provides hands-on job training for at risk youth from the surrounding neighborhoods. Members earn a GED; receive an hourly stipend and an educational award from AmeriCorps while learning life skills and building a new home.

• 32 Youthbuild members, ages 17-25, received academic and vocational training in 2012

Our Adultbuild program provides hands-on job training to low-income Milwaukee residents who are interested in the construction field. Participants receive construction skills training while building or rehabbing homes and prepare for jobs in the construction industry.

• 21 Adultbuild participants, 24 and older, received vocational training in 2012

Providing affordable housing for low to moderate income home buyers is one of the most enduring results of our Housing Production Programs, including Adultbuild and Youthbuild.

• In 2012, 5 houses were finished and sold, 6 more were under construction
