Dear Visitors,

It’s fall in New Mexico, and Fair is in the air! We’ve spent the last six months preparing so that the experience you have here today will be one of those you never forget. The way we see it, the Fair is about making memories—the memories of a lifetime—which is why we’ve endeavored to make the 2012 New Mexico State Fair one for the record books. You see, the New Mexico State Fair is about tradition, and we’re worked hard to preserve those things we think make our fair unique and vital: a focus on our state’s agricultural heritage and on the importance of the farming and ranching industries in New Mexico even

today; an open door and a staging area for all of New Mexico’s many rich and diverse cultures to coalesce in a single place even if for only a few weeks each year to teach and learn from each other, and, most importantly, to share their cultural traditions. But we’ve also kept up with changing times. From our energy saving lighting throughout the grounds and a broad recycling program that reuses wastewater and manure, the New Mexico State Fair is all about integrating technology into our operation. The State Fair truly is a place where the past meets the future.

We’re also here, we believe, to further education in ways that can’t be achieved in any single classroom in the state. Whether through our School Days Program or by just visiting the Fair with family for a day, children have the chance to experience everything hands-on: from live milking of cows and sheep to petting zoos, live storytelling and other children’s entertainment, handicrafts, theater arts, and everything from sheep shearing demonstrations to the ancient art of blacksmithing. It would take several days to enjoy all the Fair has to offer, and we sincerely hope you’ll visit us again and again this year. To that end, we’ve made parking free and kept admission prices the lowest among any Fair in the country, and we’ve gone over-the-top on new features like the mobile Zip Line, Full-Contact Jousting, new carnival rides, a laser light show, dozens of free live entertainers daily, and we’re hosting the Centennial Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge to find the best in the state … If you wanted it at the Fair, chances are, “We’ve got that this year. For realz!” Plus, we’ve worked hard to keep our grounds clean, safe and beautiful. We’re glad you decided to spend some time with us at the 2012 State Fair, and we hope you’ll come back and visit us again before the gates close on yet another historic year. We sincerely hope you have a fair to remember!Yours truly,

rS Birdman of Las Vegas

It’s one thing to train a dog to do a trick…it’s quite another to train a wild animal. And then there is “The Birdman of Las Vegas”—Joe Krathwohl. This is a phenomenal show that is educational and yet overpowering in its scope of entertainment value. You’ll wonder where the time went as your senses return after seeing this show. This famous Las Vegas show features everything from Eagles to Macaws, Falcons to Cranes, Cockatoos to Storks, Owls to Pigeons, Parrots to Ravens, and even a 10 foot wingspan Condor, in routines that highlight both their

natural behaviors and their intelligence, and all in one avian extravaganza. The Birdman is dedicated to presenting birds with positive training techniques for the very best of their physical and mental well-being. As part of every show, The Birdman educates the audiences about each species, its status in the wild, and other interesting and amazing facts. These are the very same bird-stars who have been featured on Late Night with David Letterman, the Animal Planet, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, TV Specials with Siegfried and Roy and David Copperfield, and in major Las Vegas hotels including the Venetian, Caesars Palace, The Tropicana and the Excalibur.

Location: Youth Hall CourtyardSchedule: daily; 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m.

With music pumping, riders launch into mind-bending moves that you probably don’t need to be reminded not to try at home. This show has all the thrills—and occasional spills—an audience could want. Combine this with major audience participation and a deep sense of “How did they do that?” and you’ve got yourself one heck of a show.

Brand new to the New Mexico State Fair at Lynette’s request, the It Up Zip Line is sure to draw big crowds and long lines, so be prepared. But rest assured it will be worth the wait!

12 @ The Fair!

The first thing everyone wants to know when they get to the Fair is what the new food items are. So this year, we decided to sponsor a friendly contest among our vendors to see who could come up with the most unique culinary treat especially for the 2012 New Mexico State Fair. The requirements weren’t that the food item (or items) necessarily be new to the world, just new to our Fair. Fourteen of our vendors decided to participate with everything from the Donut Burger to Fried Beer.

Judging on Opening Day was handled by a group of local TV news personalities who tast-ed and ranked each and every one of the goodies you’ll find listed below (we go to print prior to the judging, so you’ll have to ask around to find out who won). We encourage you to make an entire State Fair day of trying all of these quizzical culinary curiosities and judging for yourself. Here they are (see map on next page for location of each vendor):

cExhibit: Working on the Rails: African Americans and Domestic Train ServiceSunday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Through September 29, 2012

This exhibit is a brief display of photos and flash backs of the experiences and the legacy of the Pullman porters and the thousands of black railroad workers involved in rail car maintenance, bag-gage assistance, food service and room service on the trains. Beyond the stylish interiors of the Pullman car, the luxury and comforts provided by Blacks, these moments in time for the Pullman Porters, attendants, dining car cooks and waiters, maids, and baggage handlers portray a human story of racism and exploitation, but also represent the quiet struggles, new strategies for improvement, and union options to create a better future for Blacks.

These jobs also represented full employment and steady work for Blacks at a time when there were few real jobs for African Americans. However, the porters were also required to work a minimum of 400 hours a month, to travel all over the coun-try at a moment’s notice, to pay for their own suits and uniforms to work without opportunity for promotion, and they had no permanent sleeping quarters on the train. They also had to come in early, without pay, to set up the Pullman sleeper quarters and layout supplies and materials, prepare the beds and get ready for the travel assignment. Poor working conditions and low pay finally led to formation of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925, and the appointment of A. Philip Randolph as their president in 1929. Under Randolph’s leadership, the union would go on years later in 1937 to win more money, greatly improved working conditions, and major changes in their contract. A Philip Randolph, a New York activist, with connections in Washington, DC, continued as union president and also worked with Martin Luther King on the March on Washington in 1963-1964, and assisted with other civil rights projects.

Back in New Mexico, African Americans were here as Buffalo soldiers between 1866 and 1891, some of whom would retire to various cities around the state. With the arrival of the railroads in 1880’s, they and others, who may have arrived by train, would come to take advantage of less prejudiced people and towns, to find new work, to set-up small businesses, and also to acquire inexpensive property or home-steading land including also Blackdom the all Black township near Roswell.

New Mexico State Fair QueenJamie Lynn Gerard was born on a small Quarter Horse farm in Socorro, NM. Being the youngest of four children, she grew up with all of the love and support any young girl could ever want. Jamie loved riding horses and competing from a very young age. Having the opportunity to compete in horse shows and rodeos allowed Jamie to develop horsemanship skills that have stuck with her throughout her career as a cowgirl. Her mother is, and has always been, a firm believer in horsemanship first, and competition second. This way of training has brought her to where she is today in her agricultural career. Jamie currently works for her mother as a horse trainer; she works with horses of all ages and skill levels to help improve communication lines between horses and riders. She loves to teach young children, especially ones who have a desire to compete. She has always felt that com-petition teaches not only poise, but also grace in winning as well as losing. Jamie is currently a student at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology where she studies Biology.

Jamie discovered her love for competition when she was very young, but at age 11 she found that her true passion lay in rodeo royalty pageants. She has been crowned the Socor-ro County Fair and Rodeo Sweetheart once each, and won the Princess and County Queen titles twice. In 2007 Jamie competed for the title of New Mexico State Fair Queen and was named Miss Personality and was 1st Attendant at the Miss Turquoise Circuit Pageant. After a brief hiatus she returned to the New Mexico State Fair one last time to compete for the Queen title in 2011. This time she won the coveted Miss Horsemanship award and the title of 2011-2012 New Mexico State Fair Queen. For her efforts, Jaime Lynn received a two-horse trailer courtesy of T&T Trailer Sales, a handmade saddle and a sterling silver bracelet and buckle custom made by Dale Chavez, Inc.; her Queen’s crown was made by Montana Silversmiths.

Over the past year as New Mexico State Fair Queen, Jamie Lynn has traveled all over our gorgeous Land of Enchantment appearing at various agricultural events, from the Turquoise Circuit Finals in Las Cruces, NM to meeting with Governor Suzanna Martinez in Santa Fe. She was invited to be a keynote speaker at banquets and conventions and hit the rodeo trail for the spring and summer months working with the best stock contractors in the Southwest!

Today, Jamie feels blessed to have had the opportunity to represent and be a part of the “Biggest Show in New Mexico.” The New Mexico State Fair always has been, and always will be a part of her life. When she looks back on her reign as the 2011-2012 New Mexico State Fair Queen her only sadness will be because it couldn’t have lasted longer. The people that she met and the places she went will forever hold a special place in her heart. Jamie is ex-cited to represent the great state of New Mexico at the 2013 Miss Rodeo USA competition, held at the IPRA finals in Oklahoma next January.

“I hope that I have made you proud, New Mexico,” says Jaime Lynn, “Happy Trails, my friends!”
