THE EVENT The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) will host its 44th Annual National Convention in Washington, DC. The NBLSA Convention is an annual gathering of employers, law school students and professionals from across the nation. NBLSA needs your help to make the event a success!

ABOUTNBLSA

About NBLSAIn 1968, Algernon Johnson ("AJ") Cooper Jr., former mayor of Prichard, Alabama, founded the first Black American Law Students Association (BALSA) at the New York University Law School. In 1983, BALSA revised its name and the word "American" was deleted to encompass all blacks, including those not of American nationality. Later, the word "National" was added to reflect the organization's national expansion, which now includes representation in the law schools of forty-eight states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

Today, the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), is a national organization formed to articulate and promote the needs and goals of black law students and effectuate change in the legal community. As the largest student run organization in the United States with over 6,000 members, NBLSA is also comprised of chapters or affiliates in six different countries including The Bahamas, Nigeria, and South Africa. Organized into six regions (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southern, Mid-West, Rocky Mountain and Western Region), the organization has over 200 chapters and is present in all but a few of the nation's accredited law schools, as well as unaccredited law schools. The headquarters of NBLSA is located in Washington, D.C. NBLSA encourages the development of talented, social conscious lawyers of tomorrow.

MissionThe purpose of NBLSA is to utilize the collective resources of the member chapters to:

• Articulate and promote the educational, professional, political, and social needs and goals of Black law students;

• Foster and encourage professional competence;

• Improve the relationship between Black law students, Black attorneys, and the American legal structure;

• Instill in the Black attorney and law student a greater awareness and commitment to the needs of the Black community;

• Influence the legal community by bringing about meaningful legal and political change that addresses the needs and concerns of the Black community;

• Adopt and implement policies of economic independence;

• Encourage Black law students to pursue careers in the judiciary; and

• Do all things necessary and appropriate to accomplish these purposes.•

ABOUTCONVENTION

Dear Volunteers,

Each spring, the National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) holds an Annual Convention. This year, we'll convene March 7-11, 2012 in our nation's capital.

The primary purpose of our National Convention is to conduct the business of NBLSA: the submission of our annual officer reports and the election of national officers. Convention delegates will meet in efficient and productive plenary sessions throughout the week that update them on the current state of the organization.

Our National Convention is also an opportunity for self-enrichment. Members have an opportunity to meet and interact with NBLSA members from around the country and the world; participate in competitions and workshops; and network with attorneys, legal employers, and other dignitaries. In our workshops, we'll discuss recent legal developments and issues affecting the black

community and black attorneys.

Last, our National Convention is a time for reflection and celebration. It is a time to honor the organization's accomplishments as we continue building towards a better future. We recognize outstanding members, chapters, regions, and national initiatives that best exemplify NBLSA's purpose - to strive for racial equity and fairness throughout the legal system. We also reflect on the achievements and sacrifices of those that came before us, and pay tribute to their legacy of service and excellence.

Our 2012 convention theme, Pipelines & Pathways: Combining Today's Ambitions with Tomorrow's Realities, provides the perfect backdrop to engage in all three. This theme embodies our efforts to introduce our membership to influential people and distinct areas of the law (Pipelines) while highlighting how our closely connected community prepares our members to be successful advocates and mentors (Pathways). By combining our pipeline resources with our pathway preparation, we are cultivating a new generation of social engineers.

Having a successful convention requires a tremendous level of effort and coordination from National and Regional board members as well as chapter leadership. In particular, I'd like to recognize the hard work of our national convention team Ijeoma Okolo, Latrice Hemphill, and Kaila Igelhart; and our event planners from Next Level Site Selection and Events, Myrlin Young and Brenda Wise.

Last our convention would not be possible without you, our NBLSA volunteers. We look forward to seeing you in our nation's capital this March. Thank you in advance for making our 44th National Convention the best yet!

Competition Bailiff - One person will be assigned to each advocacy competition round to ensure its smooth operation. The duties include:

• Confirming the competition room is setup in a courtroom format

• Keeping track of each speaker's time

• Ensuring competition judges submit a correct and complete scoresheets

Convention Registration Volunteer - Six to ten people will be assigned during each shift to help with registration. The duties include:

• Welcoming new attendees to the convention

• Distributing name badges, registration bags, etc. to attendees as they arrive

• Helping answer simple questions about the convention

Directional Helper - One to two people are assigned to direct attendees during each shft. The duties include:

• Being familiar with the convention layout and location of workshops, competitions, and other events

• Greeting attendees and providing assistance locating a session or other event

• Helping answer simple questions about the convention

Floaters - Floaters may be assigned to any of the other positions listed based on additional needs that develop throughout the conference. A floater may have several different assignments within the course of a day.

Networking Event Volunteer (Host, Ticket Taker, & VIP Escort) - Ten to twelve people will be assigned to each major social function (banquets and receptions) during the convention. The duties include:

• Helping with crowd control before the event

• Assisting with taking tickets and/or checking badges

• Assisting with getting attendees seated in a timely manner

• Reserved seating will be provided for volunteers who serve at the Sadie T. M. Alexander Luncheon, the A. Leon Higginbotham Luncheon, and the 44th Annual Convention Awards Gala

Panel Monitor - One person is assigned to monitor each seminar. The duties include:

• Greeting attendees at the entrance and checking for registration badges

• Directing attendees to fill seats in the front and center of room first and helping latecomers find seats if available

• Acting as the speakers’ immediate contact and reporting any audio-visual or other problems to an NBLSA staff member

• Distributing and collecting evaluation forms

• Recording the number of people attending the session at the beginning and midpoint on the session evaluation envelope

Plenary Session Monitor - One person is assigned to monitor each plenary. The duties include:

• Greeting attendees and directing delegates and guests to their respective assigned seating

• Being familiar with the members of the Board of Directors (photos are in the program guide) and directing them to the front of the room for VIP seating

• Assisting latecomers with finding seats, if available

Pre Convention Volunteer (Stuffing Bags/Registration Setup) - Eight to ten people are assigned to assist with pre-conference setup. The duties include:

• Stuffing attendee bags and name badges

• Setting up registration areas

• Placing signs outside of sessions and in convention area

Transportation Leader - Three to five people are assigned to direct attendees to transportation. The duties include:

• Greeting attendees and directing them onto shuttles

• Ensuring shuttles are full or close to capacity prior to departure

• Informing attendees about shuttle arrival and departure times

• Informing NBLSA staff about late or early shuttle departures and arrivals

Convention Volunteer Notes

Below please find information about the operation of our volunteer program.

Arrival & Check-In. Volunteers are expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to their shifts. All volunteers must check-in at volunteer registration located on the second floor in the main convention space prior to beginning their volunteer shifts.

Attendance/Absences. The conference depends on volunteers to work the hours they have committed. If you cannot make it or are going to be late, please notify Jonathan Hartsfield, the volunteer coordinator, at [email protected] or (313) 598-4122 as soon as possible.

Attire. This is a professional conference, so volunteers’ professional appearance contributes favorable to the public image of NBLSA and the convention. While on duty you are expected to wear your badge at all times. The dress code for volunteers is as follows:

• Competition Bailiff: Business Casual

• Convention Registration Volunteer: Business Casual

• Directional Helper: Business Casual

• Floaters: Business Casual

• Networking Event Volunteer: Business Casual

• Panel Monitor: Business Casual

• Plenary Session Monitor: Business Casual

• Pre-Convention Volunteer: Casual

• Transportation Volunteers: Business Casual for shifts beginning before 9pm. Event appropriate for shifts beginning after 9pm.

Please note that the above denotes our minimum expectations for your attire. You may wish to adjust your dress if you plan to attend workshops or other events. For instance, for shifts denoted as Business Casual, attendees will be in Business Professional.

Attitude & Personal Conduct. NBLSA is a professional nonprofit organization. Staff and volunteers alike are asked to speak quietly and to be courteous and considerate of other volunteers, staff, and attendees.

Check-Out. At the conclusion of your shift, please stop by volunteer registration and check-in with your onsite volunteer coordinator to hand in any information (e.g., panel session evaluation forms) and to give a brief recap of your experience.

Confidentiality. Volunteers are expected to treat all information about attendees or convention operations in a confidential manner. This includes all information that may be passed via word of mouth, computer documents, or other records.

Emergencies. If you have an accident or incident or see one happen nearby, please inform the volunteer coordinator immediately.

Shift Assignments. While you have been assigned to a specific shift, please note that you may be reassigned due to additional needs that develop during the course of the convention. We thank you in advance for your flexibility.

Attendees will learn the realities of government practice from attorneys employed by various government departments and agencies. Our discussion will identify the perks of being a government attorney, while endeavoring to put the most egregious rumors to rest.

Hanging Your Shingle: The Nuts and Bolts of Flying SoloAre you a law student with an entrepreneurial spirit? This panel will attempt to reconcile these dual interests, by showcasing the pros (and cons) of starting a law practice. Attendees will meet established attorneys who will provide sage advice drawn from their own experiences. Attendees will gain a sense of the benefits and drawbacks of picking your own hours, maintaining a client base, and handling your own cases. This workshop is sure to decrease the learning curve associated with starting your own practice!

Panelists will also discuss what qualities they value in law clerks, and what law students can do while they are still in law school if they are interested in pursuing a career in the judiciary.

The Spotlight & The Limelight: Sports and Entertainment LawDid the legal underpinnings of the almost-NFL shutdown intrigue you? Does the number of contracts required to produce a single episode of your favorite TV series fascinate you? This panel will give you an insider’s view of the practice of sports & entertainment lawyers, and the opportunities available for law students trying to break into the field.

The Necessary Liability: Life of In-House CounselIn private practice, lawyers are considered assets. In the corporate arena, however, they represent an expense on the bottom line, i.e., a liability. This panel addresses the ins-and-outs of corporate practice with current and former in-house counsel who will provide concrete advice for aspiring attorneys seeking to become an asset to their company. Attendees will gain a sense of the responsibilities held by in-house attorneys, and the qualifications executives seek when hiring corporate counsel.

Standing Out From the Crowd: Developing Your Personal BrandFrom the “swoosh” on a pair of Nike’s to the “LV” on your favorite purse, companies know all-too-well how to market their products and distinguish their brand from the pack. This panel discussion will inform attendees on how to create a personal brand for themselves while emphasizing the importance and benefits of appropriate personal branding in the legal profession.

Brother-to-Brother: The Re-Emergence of the Black Gentleman“Ren•ais•sance (n.): A revival of intellectual or artistic achievement and vigor.” For many reasons, chief among them high incarceration rates, the Black man is becoming an “endangered species.” Our communities need professional Black male role models: including men who are balanced socially, professionally, spiritually, and emotionally. This panel discusses the notion of the Black “Renaissance Man,” while discussing the importance of being socially conscious, culturally aware, having a global perspective, and possessing the ability to navigate different social spheres without losing balance or perspective. A gentleman should also present well—be well-read, well-spoken, well-mannered, and well-dressed. This panel seeks to instill these values in all attendees, while also emphasizing the importance of Black male role models and encouraging that more men adopt the renaissance model in their lives. After all, as the adage goes: “To whom much is given, much is required.” This panel will identify ways that Black men can help to build our generational pipeline as they seek to become community leaders who are distinguished for a greater purpose.

Sister-to-Sister: Navigating Personal Success Can a Black woman in the legal profession really have it all? What challenges come with the being an accomplished and successful Black female attorney? The panel will discuss the strides and sacrifices that Black female attorneys have made as they attempted to balance their social lives, legal careers, and familial commitments. These dynamic women will also address the stereotypes and challenges that ambitious Black women face while on their way to achieving professional greatness. This panel is a yearly hit and you will not want to miss it

American Politics: The Polarization of the Black Republican It is no secret that a majority of the African American community has historically supported the Democratic Party. This panel will examine the intersection of race and political identity, debunking many of the misconceptions held about Black conservatives, while providing a more realistic view of the political spectrum. Panelists will also offer their insight on the often-contentious debates that arise when members of society (and the media) rely on negative stereotypes and blanket generalizations to describe the behavior of Black candidates and voters.

The State of the Legal Market: Where Are the Jobs?Sponsored by Navy JAGWant to land a summer associate gig but not sure which geographic region to consider? Just curious about what fields of practice are available to corporate lawyers? This panel will discuss what practice areas have grown in recent years and what areas are slowing down. Panelists will discuss the opportunities available for attorneys entering the legal market and an overview of the landscape that students will be entering in this summer.

Election Protection Less than fifty-years ago Jim Crow laws and unchecked racism made it almost impossible for a person of color to cast a ballot. Today the efforts to disenfranchise Black voters are far subtler, with the passage of seemingly harmless voter ID laws and the careful crafting and restructuring of voter districts. This panel 3 will discuss laws and ordinances that are being developed to restrict voter access to the ballot, in an effort to promote awareness about the ways we can stop voter disenfranchisement.

Working on Capitol HillThis panel will discuss the benefits of a career on “The Hill” and the various opportunities available to students in the D.C. area during and after law school. The panel will identify a wide range of opportunities including working with members of congress to lobbying on behalf of corporations, with the goal of exposing interested students to another type of public service employment opportunity.

LGBT Law: The New Civil Rights Movement?The historical relationship between the Black community and the Black church has often set the climate and tone of political and social movements. This relationship has also impacted how many in the Black community view the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) rights movement. This panel will discuss the movement for marriage equality and its comparison to the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s. We hope to illuminate the dual burden carried by Black members of the LGBT community, and how we can support those individuals in their quest for justice.

Deconstructing the Pipeline to America’s PrisonsRacial disparity in the American criminal justice system is not a new revelation. But as prisons are becoming more overpopulated, key resources are consistently being taken away, and the concept of a “Prison Industrial Complex” continues to gain traction in a number of states, it is more apparent that the system is not working. What is necessary to remedy slow reforms and the often-ineffective criminal processing system? This panel will discuss the Anti-Incarceration Movement and how it’s working to address many of these concerns. Panelists will also cover its connection to other movements such as the Innocence Project and the overall affect these movements have on the Black community. Law students will walk away from this panel with concrete ways on how they can participate and impact the movement’s direction

From Birth to the Bar: Pre-Law Panels

PL1) Cracking the LSATVirtually all law schools use the LSAT as a determining factor for admitting law school applicants. Yet, African Americans tend to score 10 points below the national average. Are you concerned about how your LSAT score will impact your admissions prospects? Join us as we discuss methods for improving your LSAT score, while we talk more about how your score should influence your application strategy.

PL2) Pipeline to Success: Preparing for Law School Law School can be a competitive environment from the admissions process to the classes, exams, and when you begin locating employment. This panel will discuss the benefits of programs developed to prepare students for the rigors of law school.

PL3) All that Glitters: Salary Expectations of the Legal ProfessionIn 2008, the median starting salary for law school graduates in the U.S. was $72,000. In 2010, it dropped to $63,000. This panel will discuss salaries and earnings potential of different paths and practice areas within the legal profession. The panel will also feature a candid discussion about financing a law school education from the perspective of paying back loans and taking opportunities that will minimize debt.

PL4) Ahead of the Class: Professors and the Socratic MethodThis panel will feature a candid discussion about cold calling and the Socratic Method. Law professors will give their thoughts about in-class interaction with students, while students will give testimonials about their best and worst classroom experiences. Attendees will walk away with information on how to be prepared for class, ask the right questions, and make the most use of their professors as invaluable intellectual resources.

PL5) From Good to Great: Developing a Leader’s MindThis panel will discuss the importance of becoming a leader on campus and in one’s community, and how as law school hopefuls they can acquire a litany of skills that will benefit them in their professional career.

PL6) Appearance Creates Credibility – Dress for SuccessMark Twain once said, "Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society." You want to be noticed for the quality of your work—not the horrible miscalculation of your clothes or highlighting what you think is a “glorious bod.” How you dress will tell the boss how you see yourself and how you approach the job. This panel will advise students on the appropriate attire for a variety of professional settings that they will encounter as a law student and lawyer. Panelists will also help attendees to understand the importance of fit when shopping for items comprising one’s professional wardrobe. Attendees will leave this panel knowing how dress and appearance work to underscore their professionalism and competence.



Keynote Speaker

Wade Henderson is the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and The Leadership Conference Education Fund.

The Leadership Conference is the nation's premier civil and human rights coalition charged by its diverse membership of more than 200 national organizations to promote and protect the civil and human rights of all persons in the United States. Through advocacy and outreach to targeted constituencies, The Leadership Conference works toward the goal of a more open and just society. The Education Fund builds public will for civil and human rights through campaigns that empower and mobilize civil and human rights advocates around the country to push for progressive change.

Mr. Henderson is also the Joseph L. Rauh, Jr., Professor of Public Interest Law at the David A. Clarke School of Law, University of the District of Columbia.

Mr. Henderson is well known for his expertise on a wide range of civil rights, civil liberties, and human rights issues, and is the author of numerous articles on civil rights and public policy issues. Since taking the helm of The Leadership Conference in June 1996, Mr. Henderson has worked diligently to address emerging policy issues of concern to the civil and human rights community and to strengthen the effectiveness of the coalition. Under his stewardship, The Leadership Conference has become one of the nation's most effective advocates for civil and human rights.

Mr. Henderson currently serves on the National Quality Forum Board of Directors, which seeks to improve healthcare quality through performance measurement and public reporting; the FDIC Advisory Committee on Economic Inclusion, which was created in 2006 to provide the FDIC with advice and recommendations on important initiatives focused on expanding access to banking services by underserved populations; the Board of Directors of the Center for Responsible Lending, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting homeownership and family wealth by working to eliminate abusive financial practices; and the Board of Trustees of the Education Testing Service, a private, nonprofit organization devoted to educational measurement and research.

Prior to his role with The Leadership Conference, Mr. Henderson was the Washington Bureau director of the NAACP. In that capacity, he directed the government affairs and national legislative program of the NAACP.

Wade Henderson was previously the associate director of the Washington national office of the ACLU, where he began his career as a legislative counsel and advocate on a wide range of civil rights and civil liberties issues. Mr. Henderson also served as executive director of the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO).

Mr. Henderson is a graduate of Howard University and the Rutgers University School of Law. He is a member of the Bar in the District of Columbia, and the United States Supreme Court.

As a tireless civil rights leader and advocate, Mr. Henderson has received countless awards and honors, including the prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights. He holds an honorary Doctorate in Law from Queens College School of Law, City University of New York.

We are very excited to have Mr. Wade Henderson as the keynote speaker at the 44th Annual NBLSA Awards Gala on Saturday, March 10.
