Come to Mountain Lake prepared to “Do It All or Nothing at All!”

2012 Lake Level Update: Natural Rhythms Mountain Lake is one of only two natural, freshwater lakes in the state of Virginia. Its fluctuations in water level are studied by a variety of researchers and result in a fascinating and dynamic natural environment on our property! The 2011 season saw a continuing fluctuation in the water levels of this unique, mountain-top lake. Similar to seasons past, water levels rose throughout the spring and early summer thanks to plenty of spring rainfall. By early July, the water peaked at about 1/3 full pond and then began to recede drastically through the late summer and fall. The highest water level in 2011 was slightly less than the peak in 2010. Likewise, in 2011 the lakebed was nearly empty

Local Attractions In addition to our 2600 acres, numerous attractions in Giles County and the surrounding New River Valley await you during your stay at the Mountain Lake Conservancy and Hotel. Recreational opportunities and historical features abound in all directions. The Appalachian Trail passes over Salt Pond Mountain a few miles down the ridge from Mountain Lake. Just down the mountain, there are several outfitters to get you fishing, swimming, tubing, canoeing, and kayaking on the ancient New River. In Pembroke, you’ll find the popular two-mile hike to the breathtaking Cascades Waterfall. At the Stafford Art Glass Studio and Gallery you can watch glass-blowing and even take an instructional session to create your own glass-blown treasure. Whether you’d prefer a tour at a regional winery or brewery, a driving tour of the local historical covered bridges, or an afternoon of golf at the Castle Rock Golf Course, the opportunities are endless. Let Mountain Lake Conservancy and Hotel be your gateway to all there is to experience in the Giles County and New River Valley areas.

by Halloween, dropping lower than it did in 2010. Professors and graduate students continue to research the lakebed to learn more about the science behind its cycles. Recently, a tracer dye test was implemented to determine outflow of water from the lake . Water levels have been low since 2004, and only time will tell when the lake will be full again. We encourage guests to explore the unique landscape of the lakebed, which is currently a beautiful meadow of grasses. Visit the Conservancy Visitor Center for more information!
