HEAD COACH HAL MUMME
McMurry University Director of Athletics Ron Holmes hired Hal Mumme in April of2009 to be the defibrillator to a football program that went 0-10 in 2008 and had tal-lied only a 16-63 record since the 2001 campaign. After just three short seasons,Mumme has the War Hawks in a 180-degree turnaround.
In 2011, the McM finished 9-3 on the season and earned their first ever NCAA Divi-sion III playoff berth, beating Trinity in the first round. McMurry competed in DivisionIII for the final time in football as the University transitions to Division II beginning withthe 2012-13 school year. Mumme was also the 2011 South Region Coach of theYear.
The 2011 War Hawks ended the season ranked nationally by two different polls: No.14 by D3Football.com and No. 15 by the AFCA. What has become an annual “rites offall” under Mumme’s regime - an assault on the school record book - as 29 marks fellby the wayside. Quarterback Jake Mullin accounted for many of those records, pass-ing for 3,371 passing yards in a season and 614 passing yards in a game among hisaccomplishments.
Mullin, along with seniors Will Morris (free safety) and Delfonte Diamond (tight end)were each named to various All-America teams. Mullin was the American SouthwestConference Offensive “Player of the Year.”
But 2010 showed true signs of McMurry’s potential to be a force as the team postedits first winning season since 2000 and boasted its first all-Americans in a decadewith Will Morris and Dez Baker earning honors in 2010 by D3football.com. In 2010,Mumme’s innovative Air Raid Offense ranked No. 2 in the nation in passing while thedefense improved from fifth in the ASC to first from 2009 to 2010. The team finishedfourth in the ASC with a 4-4 record.
McMurry set or tied four ASC records, and 33 school records in the 2010 campaignon the way to a 6-4 season, which matched the record of the last winning McMurryteam in 2000. In 2011, the team set 31 McM records.
Mumme helped McMurry to a 4-6 season in his first year in 2009 with all four winscoming in conference play. After a 0-4 start in the 2009 season, McMurry shockedEast Texas Baptist Oct. 3, 2009 with a 45-21 win at Wilford Moore Stadium snapping

HEAD COACH HAL MUMME
THE AIR RAID OFFENSEFor fans who cover college football very closely, the Air Raid Offense - pioneered andcreated by Mumme - became prominent in the late 1990’s in Mumme’s days as headcoach at Kentucky. The spread, no-huddle offense adapted from LaVell Edward’sspaced out offense at Brigham Young University, became popular to Texas Football fanswhen Mike Leach made it a main-stay at Texas Tech University for 10 years.
Mumme hired Leach during his first head-coaching gig at Iowa Wesleyan in the late1980’s. Leach and Mumme, though still close, went separate ways in 1999 when Leachbecame Bob Stoops’ offensive coordinator at the University of Oklahoma. One seasonlater, Leach took the reins at Texas Tech and build the Red Raiders into a power housewith Mumme’s system for the next 10 seasons.
In 21 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Mumme's primary starting quarterbacks in hisAir Raid Offense have averaged nearly 3,600 yards and better than 31 touchdownpasses per season.
Mumme's stop at NCAA Division III from 2009-11 was the first in his career. He's been ahead coach at the NAIA, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division I-AA and NCAA Division Iranks, as well.
However, neither the athletic association nor the division has stopped quarterbacks fromposting astronomical numbers in the air raid system.
At McMurry, senior Jake Mullin enters his final collegiate campaign, having already re-written the McM record books. Mullin's career numbers are 750-for-1184 (63.3%), 89TDs and 8,979 yards. In 2011, Mullin – a product of Burleson High School in theDallas/Fort Worth area – pulled off one of the biggest upsets since David slew Goliath bywinning the FRS Quarterback “Performance of the Year” contest. The results of the fan
a 17-game losing skid. Mumme and the team used that momentum to win four-straightcontests and finished fifth in the nine-team American Southwest Conference after aprojected last-place finish in the Preseason Coaches and Media Poll.
When Holmes named Mumme as the school's 20th head football coach in school his-tory, it ended a 21-year absence from Texas for the veteran coach, who began hiscoaching career began in 1976 at Moody High School in Corpus Christi.
After stops at West Texas A&M and UT-El Paso as an assistant coach, he was thehead football coach at Copperas Cove High School. He left Copperas Cove and Texasin 1988 and was named head coach at Iowa Wesleyan College. Since then, Mummehas slowly been inching his way back to the Lone Star State. He stayed three seasonsat IWC before taking control of his first NCAA program at Valdosta State (Division II) inValdosta, Ga. from 1992-1996.
Then, Mumme broke into the Division I ranks in 1997 when he coached the KentuckyWildcats in the Southeastern Conference from 1997 to 2000 and made back-to-backbowl appearances in 1999 (Outback Bowl) and 2000 (Music City Bowl).
After a brief break in coaching, he began the trek home with three years in Hammond,La. at Southeastern Louisiana where he started a program from scratch and led theteam to a winning season in his second year. Then, in his last stop before McMurry, hespent four years re-writing the offensive record book at New Mexico State in LasCruces, N.M.
Mumme’s 21-year collegiate coaching record is 127-115-1 (.525).

“AIR RAID 101”: Q & A WITH HAL MUMME
What do you look for in Air Raid receivers:“You have to have talent, but you don’t necessarily have to be a burner. All ofour guys, at every level we’ve coached have been between a 4.3-4.8 40-yarddash. One of the key elements is you have to be able to have the awareness tofind space.”
What do you look for in Air Raid running backs:“You have to be able to block and catch passes out of the backfield. Though weare a pass-heavy team, we have a goal for our top runner to rush for 1,000yards each season. On many plays our running back will be our last option atreceiver, and he will need to be able to make yards after the catch.”
What do you look for in an Air Raid tight end:“Our tight end is often built a lot like Delfonte Diamond (former McMurrytight end), he’s often a hybrid wide receiver / tight end. A lot of times we havegotten former running backs that we move over. We need this guy to havegreat hands and be able to find space.”
What do you look for in an Air Raid quarterback:“It starts and ends with the talent at quarterback. The quarterback is the mostimportant position in football, so the system is built around him. If you have aquarterback, a few talented receivers and a line that can protect, you can dosome pretty big things.”
Why the Air Raid?“It’s a system that allows you to compete at a higher level when you have lesstalented personnel. It’s a great system to put into a school that doesn’t attractthe best players. But, once talent sees what your system can do, the talent be-gins to come to you, and then you can do big things. It’s a great equalizer, ifyou can get a good quarterback with wide receivers that can play, you have achance to be a real good team.”
Who has run the Air Raid Offense the best outside of your staff?“Mike Leach. No question. He spent a year at Oklahoma and helped their of-fense take off and then took Texas Tech to 10-straight bowl games with it. Alot of people hadn’t heard much of Texas Tech before he got there, but by thetime he left nearly all college football fans knew about him. He’s run thepurest and best form of the offense since leaving our staff.”
Which of your teams have run the Air Raid Offense the best?“I couldn’t say just one, just because of all the moving around we’ve donethrough divisions, but I can give a list: The 1991 Iowa Wesleyan team, the1994 & 1996 Valdosta State teams, the 1998 Kentucky team, the 2004 South-eastern Louisiana team and the 2006 New Mexico State team.”

Jared Lorenzen also played a year for Mumme at Ken-tucky and later signed with the New York Giants.
When Mumme finds his guy, the offense moves the ball. Holbrook came in the finalthree years of his time at NMSU to post 11,846 passing yards and 85 touchdownpasses.
All in all, Mumme's primary quarterbacks tossed 75,339 yards and 660 touchdowns in21 seasons. Those numbers don't include backups; for example, his son Matt Mumme -Couch's backup in 1998 - played at Kentucky and had the 13th and 14th longest passplays in school history to his credit (79 & 78; both were TDs).
To give Abilene fans a comparison of how much ground has been covered through theair at the hands of his primary quarterback under Mumme's tutelage: 75,339 yards isequal to 226,017 feet or 42.80 miles; if one drove in their car from Abilene down Inter-state 20 going east, you'd make it well past Eastland.
“If the most important position to recruit is the quarterback, then do something that fea-tures the quarterback so that you can get the most important person,” Mumme said ofthe Air Raid Offense.

ASSISTANT COACH JOE LEE DUNN
JOE LEE DUNNDefensive Coordinator4th season
Joe Lee Dunn joined the McMurry University staff, along with head coach Hal Mumme,in 2009. After locking in on several battles in the Southeastern Conference in the late1990’s, Dunn decided to combine forces with Mumme in 2008 (at New Mexico State)rather than coach against him anymore.
In 2011, Will Morris repeated as an All-American on the D3football.com list. The WarHawks’ Corey Hall (DE), Kerry Gamble (LB), Nick Hernandez (LB) and D.J. Baiza (CB)were also honored on the All-ASC teams.
The War Hawks ranked fifth in the nation in tackles for loss at 8.83 per game. Thesquad also ranked 32nd in the country in sacks per game (2.67).
In 2010, Dunn directed the War Hawks’ defense that ranked No. 1 in the AmericanSouthwest Conference in total defense and ranked No. 6 in the nation in passes inter-cepted with 23. Under Dunn’s tutelage, McMurry boasted its first two All-Americanssince the 2000 season as corner Dez Baker and free safety Will Morris were named All-Americans by D3football.com.
In addition, both players were joined on the all-ASC defensive teams by Corey Hall(DE) and Josh McKinnis (DT). Morris was named ASC co-Defensive Player of the Year,first-team all-region, and third-team all-American while earning preseason all-Americahonors for the 2011 season.
In his second season leading McMurry’s defense in 2010, he helped McMurry improveto fifth in the American Southwest Conference in total defense. In his first season, hesaw the secondary go from last in the league in pass defense in 2008, to the No. 2 passdefense in 2009.
As the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State from 1996-2002, Dunn ran intoMumme’s Kentucky Wildcats four times from 1997-2000. A combined 11 points decidedthe first three meetings with Dunn’s Bulldogs taking two of three. Then in Mumme’s finalyear at Kentucky MSU rolled over the Wildcats 35-17 on Nov. 7, 2000.
Though Dunn took three wins against Mumme’s Air Raid Offense, Dunn said that the AirRaid Offense gave the Bulldogs fits.
On the other side of the ball Mumme hired Dunn as defensive coordinator at New Mexico State in 2008 as a result oftheir battles in the previous decade. While Mumme is credited with originating the Air Raid, Dunn is the pioneer of the3-3-5 defense.“The reason we ended up going to it was the fact that we couldn’t get enough defensive linemen at [MississippiState],” Dunn said. “We could get linebackers and defensive backs by the drove, but those big old guys up front arehard to come by.”
Dunn implemented the 3-3-5 defense while he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Memphis. He and theTigers were up against the University of Southern California in Pasadena, Calif. In preparation for the game, he decided to move his defensive ends and made them defensive backs. Memphis upset the No. 14-ranked Trojans 24-10 Sept. 2, 1991 partly due to Dunn’s antics on defense.
The 3-3-5 defense consists of three down-linemen with three linebackers and five players in the secondary. Pre-snap Dunn moves defenders around and constantly shows blitz from different parts of the defense to confuse offenses.
Dunn was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1968. He began his coaching career with nine years on staff, and later he was inducted into the school’s hall of fame.
He spent seven seasons at the University of New Mexico where he was the head coach for four seasons from 1983-1986.
Then, Dunn broke into the Southeastern Conference as the defensive coordinator for the University of South Carolina from 1987-88. In his first season as defensive coordinator, Dunn helped the Gamecocks finish in the top five in all major defensive categories. 20

ASSISTANT COACH JOE LEE DUNN
From there, he went to the University of Memphis from 1989-91 as defensive coordinator. Then he spent three seasons at Ole Miss from 1992-1994 and was theteam’s interim head coach in 1994. For the 1995 season, Dunn returned to the SEC where he took the defensive reigns at the University of Arkansas and helped the Razorbacks to an SEC West Division title.
He also spent seven seasons at Mississippi State. His 1999 team had the No. 1 de-fense in NCAA Division I. Dunn helped the Bulldogs to three bowl appearances includ-ing back-to-back wins at the 1999 Peach Bowl (17-7 win over Clemson) and the 2000Independence Bowl (43-41 win over Texas A&M in overtime).
He returned to the University of Memphis from 2003-2005 and resurrected a defensethat was 101st in the nation in rushing defense in 2002. In his first season back in2003, the Tigers finished ninth in NCAA Division I in total defense. He followed that in2004 with the seventh-best defense in the nation.
He coached at Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn. in 2007 before taking the de-fensive coordinator position at New Mexico State.
THE 3-3-5 DEFENSEHe’s credited with creating one of the most complex and unconventional defenses infootball, but when McMurry defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn discusses the 3-3-5defense, birthed in 1991 for a single-game plan, he says it’s simple: tackle.
“If you’ve got a bunch of people that can’t tackle, you’re not going to stop anybody any-way,” said Dunn. “It’s not me, or a scheme, or how you line up; it’s the players, and ifyou can’t tackle it doesn’t make any difference what you run.”
And while the only ingredient to a defense may be players that can tackle according toDunn, it’s hard to argue with what he’s accomplished with the 3-3-5, blitz-heavyscheme.
Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) was preparing to face theUniversity of Southern California in 1991. The Trojans were ranked No.14 in the nationcoming into the game and had an offensive personnel on the line that Dunn fearedwould dominate the Tigers’ undersized line.
“We were a small Division I school. We were able to be very competitive and hadsome great linebackers and defensive backs, but defensive lineman were hard to find, and we couldn’t compete in the recruiting game with larger schools like USC for the bigboys down front.”
As it was, Dunn’s Tigers ran a 5-down defensive linemen set with three linebackers, two corners and a free safety.
“I though the only way we could compete was to drop our defense ends back off theline. The guys we had down there were agile enough to play in the secondary anyway,”he said.
Thus, the 3-3-5 defense saw its first action in college football Sept. 2, 1991 at the LosAngeles Coliseum where the Memphis State Tigers downed the national powerhouse24-10 in a game that is still considered by Memphis as one of the biggest wins in schoolhistory.
However, Dunn’s new and innovative alignment did not immediately become a mainstay. In fact, Dunn said that he didn’t use it again for five years.
“I went back to the 5-3,” he said. “We used it because we just didn’t have the personnelagainst USC, but we didn’t play that caliber of team every week and I preferred the 5-3.”
However, when Dunn took over as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State, a South-eastern Conference school, in 1996, he found himself in a familiar position.
“I was there for seven years, and there were a couple of seasons where we had thelinebackers and secondary, but we were short on talent at the defensive line,” he said.
Dunn dusted off the scheme and implemented it as his base defense for the Bulldogs and coached the nation’s No. 1 defense in 1999 and helped MSU to back-to-back bowl wins in 1999 and 2000. By the end of his tenure in 2002, the defensive scheme had caught fire and coaches from around the country at every level wanted a piece of it.
“You can’t imagine how many phone calls I got from coaches wanting me to help them utilize it,” he said. “It’s really become a mainstay at the high school level. I still have visitors who call and want to know how and whether they should put it in.”
If you ask Dunn who he thinks has run the 3-3-5 the best outside of his own tutelage, he’ll give you a shrug.
“I’m pretty old, I don’t really think about all that,” Dunn said. “I always just try now to get better at what we are doing.”
While Dunn doesn’t concern himself with other coaches who are running his system, several big college football programs still run it including West Virginia and Wake Forrest. In fact in 2009, McMurry’s first season under head coach Hal Mumme and the defensive schemes of Dunn, Mississippi College used the 3-3-5 defense and stunned McMurry with a 61-14 beating at home.
Despite the Choctaws victory, McMurry still improved from the No. 9 passing defense in the American Southwest Conference in 2008, to the No. 2 pass defense in 2009.

Dunn’s goals for McMurry are to become a defensive unit that others fear to playrather than vice versa.
“We’ve got to get out of that kind of performance, we can’tbe a program that gives up60 points anymore,” he said. “I want McMurry to become a defense that the offense is going to worry about having to play us. I feel confident we are going to get to a placeand time where they don’t want to play McMurry. If we keep up the recruiting and getpeople who can tackle, we will.”

ASSISTANT COACH KENDALL ROBERSON
KENDALL ROBERSONDefensive Backs Coach /Assistant Head Coach4th season
Kendall Roberson came to the McMurry staff in 2009 along with head coach Hal Mumme.
Roberson oversees the War Hawks’ defensive secondary.
Roberson brought NCAA Division I playing experience and nine years coaching collegiate
secondaries to McMurry. Roberson, a standout defensive back was reunited with one of
his former Mississippi State coaches, Joe Lee Dunn, in 2008 at New Mexico State and
then joined head coach Hal Mumme and Dunn at McMurry prior to the 2009 season.
In 2011, Will Morris repeated as an All-American on the D3football.com honor roll. Tea-
mamte D.J. Baiza, a cornerback, earned second team All-ASC accolades.
In 2010, Roberson guided the secondary to the No. 1-ranked pass defense in the Ameri-
can Southwest Conference and the defense ranked sixth in NCAA Division III in intercep-
tions with 23. McMurry’s secondary boasted the first two all-Americans since the 2000
season. Morris and Dez Baker each earned national honors from D3football.com, and
Morris was named preseason all-America for the 2010 season by both D3football.com and
the Consensus Draft Services.
In his first season with McMurry in 2009, he helped coach the No. 2 pass defense in the
American Southwest Conference as the team limited opponents to just 183.8 yards per

ASSISTANT COACH CHASE HOLBROOK
CHASE HOLBROOKQuarterbacks Coach /Camp & Clinic Coordinator4th season
Chase Holbrook joined the McMurry staff in 2009. Holbrook was Hal Mumme’s former
quarterback at New Mexico State University.
Holbrook became the Quarterbacks Coach in 2011 and inherited McM’s three-time all-
conference quarterback Jake Mullin when he took over those duties. Holbrook, a former
NCAA Division I quarterback at New Mexico State, will guide the record-breaking Mullin
in his final collegiate campaign.
His first two seasons with the War Hawks were spent as the running backs coach.
In 2011, under Holbrook’s tutledge, Mullin set an McM record for season passing yards
(3,371) and completions in a season (292). The War Hawks team was also No. 1 in the
nation in NCAA III for passing offense at 346.25 yards per game.
In his first season as running backs coach in 2009, he saw McMurry compile 423 rush-
ing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. McMurry rushed for a season-high 143
yards on 35 carries in a loss to Mississippi College and Holbrook saw Keenan Alford
take 14 carries for 149 yards. In 2010, he saw true-freshman Austin Brooks earn sec-
ond-team all-conference after rushing for more than 500 yards in just six starts.
As a player, Holbrook played the last three seasons for Mumme at New Mexico State
where he compiled 11,846 passing yards and 85 touchdowns. His sophomore season
was his most recognized as he threw for 4,619 yards (most ever by a quarterback under
Mumme) and 34 touchdowns.
That season, he set the single-season school record for passing yards, completions
(397), attempts (566), touchdown passes, and consecutive 300-yard games (seven). He
also had the single-game record for pass attempts (73), completions (50), consecutive
completions (16) and longest pass completions (96 yards).
In 2007, he threw for 3,866 yards and 26 touchdowns and set the single-season pass
completion percentage record at NMSU at 70.2 percent (381-543). In 2008, he capped
his three-year career with a senior season tallying 3,361 yards and 25 touchdowns.
He left New Mexico State as the all-time leader in attempts (1,567), completions (1,087),
completion percentage (.694), yards (11,846), touchdowns (85), consecutive games with
a touchdown pass (17), and 300-yard games (24). In just three seasons, he also be-
came the third all-time leading passer in the Western Athletic Conference.
Out of L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas, he originally signed with Southeastern
Louisiana State to run Mumme’s offense there after Martin Hankins graduated. Holbrook
backed up Hankins in the 2004 season and watched him throw for 4,240 yards and 35
touchdowns.
He received a redshirt in 2005 as he was forced to sit out a year because of the NCAA’s
Division I to I transfer rules.
Holbrook was born in Lub-
bock, lives in Abilene and is
married to the former Robin
Cathey (who serves as
McMurry’s Director of Ticket-
ing for athletics).

ASSISTANT COACH CHET FORAKER
CHET FORAKERAssistant Running Backs Coach1st season
Chet Foraker will only be with the War Hawks for one season as a volunteer assistant
coach in 2012. Foraker came to McMurry from Malone University in Canton, Ohio
(where he coached tight ends), to learn the “Air Raid Offense.”
Foraker had a 13-year coaching career at the high school and small college levels be-
tween 1959-1972. His high school stops included Galion, Bucyrus, and North Royal-
ton (all in Ohio). On the collegiate level, he had stints at Blufton College, Mt. Vernon
Nazarene College and Travecca Nazarene College.
After walking away from coaching, Foraker had a long and distinguished career in the
textbook publishing business, with the bulk of his time spent with industry giant Mc-
Graw-Hill publishing company. He retired from the publishing business in 2005 as the
VP and National Sales Director for the SRA School Division of McGraw-Hill, Inc.
At that time in life, most men start thinking about going fishing and relaxing. But
Foraker, as he puts it, “felt a strong desire that God was leading me back into what I
feel I was created to do, which was to impact the lives of young men involved in ath-
letics – especially football – through coaching.”
Since 2007, Foraker has been positioning himself for his return to coaching. In addi-
tion to extensive reading and videos, he has shadowed several prominent coaching
figures…the latest of which is McM’s Mumme…in preparation to return to a full-time
coasching position.

2011 IN REVIEW: A YEAR TO REMEMBER
McMurry University's football team saw its magical 2011 season come
to an end on Nov. 26 in Belton with a loss in the second round of the
NCAA Division III Playoffs. But the two most prominent national top-25
polls sent the War Hawks out on a high note as the AFCA ranked Mc-
Murry No. 15 and D3football.com ranked them 14, in the final polls of
the season.
That’s not too bad for a program which was making its first-ever NCAA
post-season appearance in football. Likewise, it completed a 180-de-
gree turnaround from an 0-10 season in 2008, the year before Hal
Mumme came in to guide the metamorphosis.
The War Hawks finished 9-3 on the season and defeated No. 11-
ranked Trinity in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs Nov.
19. An 8-2 regular season clinched the playoff bid and, along the way,
McM earned national rankings for the first time since the 1999 season.
McMurry began the season with an 82-6 loss to NCAA Division I FCS
Stephen F. Austin before rebounding to defeat FCS UT-San Antonio at
the Alamodome in front of 34,000+ fans Sept. 10. From there, McMurry
trailed No. 3-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor, 28-6, in an American South-
west Conference showdown before storming back to score 21 unan-
swered points. But McMurry would eventually fall, 28-27, in Belton after
a potential game-winning two-point conversion with less than two min-
utes left, failed.
However, from there, McMurry won seven straight games including a
win over cross-town rival Hardin-Simmons, which hadn't been done
since 1963. Also during the streak, McMurry defeated nationally-ranked
Louisiana College on the road and solidified a playoff spot by finishing
second in the ASC.
The War Hawks landed the Offensive Player of the Year in the ASC in
quarterback Jake Mullin and 14 other players were honored on the all-
conference team while six earned D3football.com all-South Region
honors. Head coach Hal Mumme was named D3football.com South
Region Coach of the Year.
Three players - Mullin, free safety Will Morris and tight end Delfonte Di-
amond - all earned various All-American awards.

2011 IN REVIEW: A YEAR TO REMEMBER
But while the season came to a close, there was still one special honor to
come to the War Hawks’ program...and it was bestowed on one of the
most “sacred” days for football: Super Bowl Sunday.
That’s when it was announced that Mullin had won the FRS Quarterback
“Performance of the Year” contest. The results of the fan voting (con-
ducted via social media) were announced as a part of the 2012 All-Star
Football Challenge show on ESPN2 prior to the Super Bowl game.
Mullin out-distance such noteable weekly winners from the college football
season as Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III (Baylor), No. 1 NFL
Draft pick Andrew Luck (Stanford) and 2012 Heisman hopeful Matt Barkley
(USC) to win the award. The junior signal-caller was the only non-NCAA
Division I nominee in the voting.
Mullin's award-winning performance came on October 15 versus Texas
Lutheran University, when he threw for 614 yards and four touchdowns in
the War Hawks' 60-16 victory over the Bulldogs.
In that game, Mullin completed 43-of-57 passes with no interceptions, on
his way to setting both the school and ASC records for passing yards in a
game. His efforts also helped the McMurry team set an NCAA III record for
total offense in a game with 848 total yards.
Coincidentally, the national ranking by the Division III polls and arm load of
accolades, sent the school out on a high note as the university began its
transition to the NCAA Division II beginning in the 2012-13 school year.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT & LIFE SKILLS
In September of 2009 President John Russell appointed Dr. Brant to serve as Faculty
Athletics Representative (FAR). The FAR is a position required by the NCAA and gener-
ally represents the institution to the NCAA (in conjunction with the President & AD). The
FAR position has two main areas of responsibility: academic integrity and student-athlete
well-being.
In the realm of academic integrity, the FAR serves as an independent voice in the athlet-
ics administration. The FAR works with the AD and Compliance Coordinator to ensure
that NCAA rules are being adhered to. The FAR works with the President & AD to en-
sure that all athletic policies conform to or support the institution’s mission.
Regarding student-athlete well-being, the FAR works with institutional offices to ensure
that student-athletes are healthy and succeeding academically. The FAR works with the
Student-Athlete Affairs Director and Athletic Academic Resources Coordinator (AARC) to
help athletes prepare for academic success & life after college. The FAR also nominates
outstanding student-athletes for NCAA & conference awards.
Emily Germany (center) - a former student-athlete at McMurry - serves as the school’s
Athletic Academic Resources Coordinator. She is the contact, resource, and mentor to all
student-athletes in regards to their academics. Some of the services include, but are not
limited to:
• Monitoring academic success utilizing a time management system, student-athlete
progress reports, and midterm reports.
• Creating improved plans when student-athlete fails quizzes, tests, or do poorly on pa-
pers, progress reports, and mid-term reports.
• Assisting student-athletes with utilizing time management skills and a variety of study
strategies.
• Assisting with locating appropriate offices on campus that manage class registration,
career services, financial aid, student payment plans, work-study, drop/add forms,
change major forms, etc.
Reverend Bill Libby (right), a former coach and director of athletics at McMurry, is the
Student-Athlete Affairs Director and responsible for fostering growth in the “life skills” of
the young men and women who don the War Hawk colors.
Rev. Libby works with individuals on such important aspects of college life as time man-
agement, interpersonal relationships and utilizing campus resources, to name a few. The
goal is to have these same techniques being practiced in college, be put to use later in
life.

FOCUS ON HISTORY
History has been an active part of McMurry University’s academic programever since the institution’s first classes began in 1923. Today, history continues to be made by a full-time staff of four who pride themselves ontheir professional accomplishments both within and outside the classroom.McMurry’s small, intimate environment promises students the kind of personal attention that they often miss at larger schools, but also affordsthem a surprisingly varied mix of intellectual challenges. It’s this combination of intimacy and intellectual diversity that distinguishes the McMurry history program and enables it to fulfill McMurry’s mission of promoting leadership, excellence, and virtue.
Last year, one of the campus highlights was a visit by rock and roll legendPhil Collins (below) for a book signing and to receive an honorary degreeat graduation. Collins’ visit was facilitated by history professor Dr. Don Frazier (right). Dr. Frazier is a noted expert on one of the state of Texas’most iconic and revered places: The Alamo. Collins, himself an Alamo afficionado, had recently completed a book about The Alamo.

FOCUS ON BUSINESS
McMurry University students in the School of Business will have a unique learning opportunitybeginning this fall with the creation of a $1 million Student-Managed Investment Fund.
The fund, approved this summer by the McMurry Board of Trustees, will allocate the $1 millionfrom the McMurry endowment which will be managed by students enrolled in two special fi-nance classes taught by Robert Kuzma and Jared Reynolds.
“This is a fantastic learning opportunity for students. It is unusual for a school the size of Mc-Murry to have a program like this and even more unusual to have a fund of this size under stu-dent control,” said Dr. K.O. Long, Dean of the McMurry School of Business. “It underlines theBoard’s commitment to providing the tools to allow McMurry students a hands-on learning ex-perience.”
During the first half of the semester, students will research various economic sectors such astechnology, health care, consumer goods, as prospective purchases and then make a presen-tation to the class. The class will then vote on which areas and companies to invest in for thatsemester. After making the investments through a national investment firm, the students willthen be responsible for monitoring and building the fund. The students also will be responsiblefor reporting their progress to the Board on a regular basis.
“I believe that this is an excellent program for our students,” said Dr. Paul Fabrizio, vice presi-dent for Academic Affairs at McMurry. “This fund reflects a payment on our commitment to ourstudents to offer them the resources they need to be successful. These students, after manag-ing this fund, will be able to approach employers with a resume that outshines most other col-lege graduates. This fund also reflects our confidence that our students will be goodshepherds of their resources. Through the tools that the students will learn, they will be able tohave the opportunity to be effective financial investors.”

FOCUS ON KINESIOLOGY
With over 180 majors and minors, the Department of Kinesiology is one of the largest at McMurry University.Traditionally known as bedrock for training teachers andcoaches, the department has met the challenges of thetwenty-first century by adding additional areas of studyto prepare students for careers in fitness and alliedhealth.
The Exercise Science and Human Performance (ESHP)degree plan consists of a concentration in one of threeareas: Personal and Community Fitness, Athletic Training/Sports Medicine, and a pre-professional trackfor students preparing for graduate studies in such areasas Physical Therapy, Chiropractic, Occupational Therapy, and Exercise Physiology. ATHLETICS FACILITIES: WILFORD MOORE STADIUM
Wilford Moore Stadium, originally opened in 1937, was re-named in 2007 after one ofthe most successful football coaches in McMurry history.
After pressure from the NCAA led to McMurry’s decision to drop its “Indians” nick-name in 2006, then Indian Stadium needed a new name, as well. Moore was the de-serving choice for the namesake of the football and track facility.
Moore coached McMurry for several years but was the head football coach from1947-54 when he led the Indians to a 48-25-5 record, guided the program to four con-ference championships and was named the Texas Conference “Coach of the Year” in1948, 1949 and 1953. His winning percentage of .610 is the highest among all thehead coaches in McMurry history with a minimum of 20 victories.
Moore’s stadium dedication ceremony took place in May of 2007 less than a yearafter the university added a brand new track surface and new artificial turf in a $1.6million project to overhaul the surfaces.
McMurry successful track and field program also calls Moore Stadium home. Thetrack program boasted greats like the late Bill Miller and 17-time all-American HannOllison. Ollison helped lead McMurry University to the first team national champi-onship in school history in 2008 by winning the NCAA Division III Outdoor crown.
In the spring of 2011, McMurry debuted the Bobby Lee Carter Throws complex to theeast of Wilford Moore Stadium. There, the War Hawks will have a hammer and discusthrows area.
The War Hawk men brought home another NCAA III outdoor track championship in2012 - behind the efforts of senior “Outstanding Performer” Kevin Cunningham’s pairof titles in the 400 and 400 hurdles - adding another title for the Moore Stadium occu-pants.
Following the school’s most accomplished football season and first-ever NCAA playoffberth in 2011, a $2.2 million renovation that included a new press box and privatesuites, concession area, restrooms, events deck, elevator, entry concourse and chair-back stadium seating was completed in the fall of 2012 and the facility re-dedicatedthat September.
Although the site once held 4,500 people, reduced seating now has the stadium’s ca-pacity at 3,550 fan-friendly seats. The facility plays north and south for football withhome seating on the west side. The stadium is located on campus just south of South14th Street on Ross Street, with ample parking located both adjacent to the stadiumand in surrounding campus lots.
