During all three years, McHenry Library has been my #1place to get my best work done. 32 UCSC library closed at 10pm in the school year 2009-2010. What a change fromthe school year 2008-2009. This made me angry- it felt that just as though I hadlaid my books and pencils out it was soon time to be kicked out. Remember thelibrary study-in? Where hundreds of students refused to leave? Why should thestudents have to pay for a university library fee? $20 a year for extended hoursisn't all that bad, but seriously upsetting on merit none the less. As a student ofUCSC in 2009-2010 I was subject to the library closing at 10pm and beingclosed on Saturdays for an entire school year. I use both libraries about 4 out of5 days on campus. In my opinion, the library is the only REAL QUIET space oncampus. [study] [quiet] [negative] [Weekends]

There used to be desks with those blinders on the side, you know, those big wooden panels, and they used to go all the way around the perimeterof the library, on all three levels. I'm pretty sure that just right there, there isclose to the same capacity as in the current arrangment with those longcorridors with tables. Seriously guys. We've had huge increases in tuition, andall the money goes to graduate level programs. Even the idea that a hugeamount of money was being spent renovating facilities, while undergraduateeducation is neglected, was bad enough... [negative]

Dec 3, 2012 4:39 PM

116 If you walk into Mchenry Library on any saturday (besides the first and maybesecond) during a quarter, most of the tables are being used by students. It isunacceptable to flat out cut a whole day that is heavily used by students. It is myopinion that the library should open at least as early as classes start onweekdays. It would be odd to have the entire campus up and running besidesthe libraries, especially since some courses use the library. [Saturday]

Dec 3, 2012 3:59 PM

117 It is absolute BULLSHIT if those core hours are the only ones approved. I wouldquestion why I chose a UC campus if they CLEARLY do not value my education. The library is a bastion for effective studying, and I am appalled by the currenthours already. Having the library close at 10PM on weeknights?? Is this a joke? Why do my peers at other state run campuses (even other UCs) have access tothe library well into the late night/early morning (past 12a.m.) and us bananaslugs get shafted? If a core resource like the library has its hours cut, I have toquestion where my thousands upon thousands of dollars are going? If the librarycut its hours, I would seriously consider leaving the UC system for good. Budgetcrisis is no excuse to neglect key educational resources. 119 There should be one room that is opened 24/7. [24 hours] Dec 3, 2012 3:27 PM

120 I would prefer the library stays open 24/7 because it is the one resource here atUCSC that is not a waste of money and is often ground zero for learning, especially considering the increased size of classes and the ineffective methodsof teaching employed in them. UCSC is a seld teach school, meaning yourprofessors provide a skeleton and you have to build the muscles, those musclesare most often built in the library, rather than lecture or discussions taught myself interested grad students. without the library the university will degrade inquality and vibrance, cut the Academic Learning Center funding, becausenobody even knows where that is anyway. As an off-campus student, I generally take thebus up to campus in the mornings and then stay there all day. 34 If I need to pay 20 dollar to support the ongoing library hours or even more, I amvery gladly to do that. [pay more]

Dec 5, 2012 7:18 PM

35 Definitely would support continuing to pay a quarterly fee to maintain libraryhours. I would support increasing the fee if needed and would support expandingthe hours to have the library open from 7AM-1AM everyday, weekdays andweekends. [pay more] [extended hours]

40 A library is a core component of university academics and success. I wouldrather foot the bill of equal access to information than foot the bill for newcampus housing. It is disgraceful that the university is allowing more students inwhile resources are drying up. [positive]

43 I think the library hours should already be provided for us and not something weshould pay extra for. [campus]

Dec 5, 2012 2:28 PM

44 Yes I am. However, we are already paying so much quarterly that we deserveand demand to have these resources, like libraries, available to us. [positive][financial hardship]

Dec 5, 2012 2:28 PM

45 Library hours are SO, SO important when studying for all of my upper divisionclasses! Especially if your living environment is not optimal for quiet study time![home setting]

Dec 5, 2012 2:06 PM

46 I am in favor of longer operating hours. At the same time, the solution cannotalways be to raise fees. Considering the amount of tuition that we pay there haveto be other options. [campus] [other sources]

47 I am in favor of keeping the fees the UC currently has in place. I am not in favorof a new fee. [positive]

48 My only question is what is being done in part by the student government topush the administration to stop making students pay for what they fail to provide.[campus]

Dec 5, 2012 1:42 PM

49 I would in theory pay significantly more (~$25) to have optimal hours 6am-midnight. HOWEVER, I believe that it is absolutely wrong to bleed fees fromstudents, funds from departments, and lower administrative staff when at thehighest levels of administration there is such a disproportionate amount of salaryand waste. 63 I was under the impression that the student fee was a temporary measurespecifically designed to give the administration the time it needs to work out analternative solution, which it has failed to do. While I would rather pay anadditional fee than not have the library accessible, the school should be able tosupport such a vital building without requiring the students to pay more than thealready exorbitant fees they pay to take classes. 80 I feel like this is an investment towards my academic success and would bewilling to continue this payment. However, I also feel that some changes in thefinancial management of the libraries should be considered. For example, I don'tthink that it is necessary to have 3 librarians present at the front desk at all timesnor is it necessary to have roving student information assistants. I would give up any and all other resources toincrease library hours. A day that I do not go to the library for at least a couplehours is so rare for me that the only times I can remember that happening is onholidays. 17 I have been here studying biological sciences for 4 years and the library hoursare the already limited library hours made doing the work I needed to do muchharder. The libraries are and have been the only place that I and others can getwork done so cutting the hours from the already limited ones we have does notmake any sense to me. I am urging you for the sake of UCSC's undergraduatedegree credibility among other institutions we need to have at least one small 24hour library open. Whether we need to cut from other programs cut library staffand or raise fees on various things to do this it needs to be done. The library isthe core of research and work at any institution even with the internet. Anddecreasing its hours will no doubt have a negative impact on student grades.Thank you for letting my voice be heard. [positive] [extended hours] [otherfunding] [24]

18 If possible, I would be willing to pay a greater fee in order for library hours to beextended. If this were not possible, I would like the library hours to remain thesame rather than be shortened, regardless of fee. [pay more - extended hours]

Dec 6, 2012 9:29 PM

19 Well, I think this is ludicrous. It is insane that these hours are being taken awayfrom our education. The library is a facility which should be open to studentseveryday all day. We would all be willing to pay a larger fee and represent alarger effort that is important in America, which is taking responsibility. Just astaxes should be increased, so too should ours. Not a continual disintegration ofeducational services. [positive]

Dec 6, 2012 8:39 PM

20 I don't understand why they can spend so much money remodeling the librarybut cannot afford to keep it open for the students that need it to complete theirwork. Dec 6, 2012 7:01 PM

24 The library at my undergraduate institution was open 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek. And that was only ONE of the libraries. The fact that UCSC can't evencover a basic workday (why should the library get to open at 10AM? Mostworking adults need to be at work by 8AM in this country) is ridiculous. The factthat the rights of students to access the library are contingent on private fundingfrom the SAME STUDENTS who don't have enough money to pay forcollege/grad school and need to work additional jobs is absolutely ludicrous. I willpay the fee and support the so-called "extended" hours of the library, but keep inmind that this whole scheme is indicative of the larger, underlying structural

Dec 6, 2012 1:03 PM

39 Honestly, I only go to the library to check out books. Pre-fee hours are more thanadequate for those needs. I can see how post-fee hours would be incrediblehelpful to students that don't have their own office or computer on campus. Isupport the fee for those students. For example, I prefer to work in somewhat noisy areas, andnone of the library (except the cafe, which is always packed and isn't really partof the library) fits those needs. I don't want the entire library to be louder, since Iknow others need a very quiet atmosphere to work, but maybe the noise levelcould be designated by floor? [extended hours] [facilities]

136 Unfortunately I am not one of many students who uses the library to the pointwhere I find it to be critical to my academic wellbeing.

137 FUCK UCSC greedy liars, they have the money and decide to gamble and sellour debt to the Walltreet bankers, fuck you [negative] [campus]

Dec 5, 2012 8:50 AM

138 The library is the only place I can successfully study at night, which is when I getmost of my studying done. I'm at either library at least 5 times a week andusually until midnight. If the library was open longer, I could see myself stayingeven later until closing. [positive] [extended hours]

Dec 4, 2012 10:38 PM

139 Thank you for allowing the students have a voice while you decide on libraryhours. It means a lot. [positive]

140 I have class and work during the day time and NEED to be able to stay at thelibrary until at least midnight most of the week. [positive] [working]

Dec 4, 2012 9:49 PM

141 Extending the library hours past 12 AM would be crucial and greatly appreciatedby all the students. Even by one hour on weeknights would be amazing.[extended hours]

Dec 4, 2012 5:16 PM

142 longer library hours even the week before finals would be helpful because it willallow us to have more time to study in a quiet location with all the resources weneed. More locations to study is also helpful and makes an impact. [extendedhours] [facilities]

Dec 4, 2012 4:10 PM

143 I will be here next year too, I need the library to be open and available that it is tothe extent that it is now. [positive]

Dec 4, 2012 4:09 PM

144 It is absolutely ridiculous that our library is only open until 12 during the weekand 7 on Saturdays. Was the huge expansion really necessary if you can't evenkeep it open during hours when students need to study? [extended hours]

145 The libraries should be open more [extended hours] Dec 4, 2012 1:50 PM

146 I wish we could have a say in all fee increases. Also Fuck the regents and thebig ass checks they write themselves. I hope whoever (if anyone) reads this isnot offended by this sentiment. I just can't comprehend the greed on behalf ofthe UC Regents. Then again maybe if I were that rich (I never will be with adegree in humanities) I wouldn't give a fuck about the people I serve. So onceagain, FUCK THE REGENTS. [negative] [campus]

Dec 4, 2012 1:49 PM

147 Please rally as much support for extending the library hours!! [positive] Dec 4, 2012 1:31 PM

Dec 4, 2012 12:14 PM

151 We need the library hour to remain the same. We pay great amounts of moneyto go to this school the least they can do is continue to support our education byallowing us a place to study in a quite enviornment [campus]

152 SUA is full of idiots. Bunch of liberals. [negative] Dec 4, 2012 11:50 AM

Dec 4, 2012 8:40 AM

155 I <3 the library Dec 4, 2012 1:45 AM

156 I would like to comment on the system for reserving study rooms. I'm sure youand I both know that it is extremely flawed. I think the biggest problem is thatthere is no way to make sure that the students who booked the rooms areactually using them or arrived on time. This seems to abuse the system byreserving rooms & not utilizing them much of the time. I know this is a far reach, but it would be great if librarians could approve access to rooms for thosestudents who actually abide by the study room rules. Another issue I would liketo address is the noise level at the libraries. The concept of quiet spaces iscompletely void in the minds of the majority of students. I understand this isprobably out of your control, but "quiet" floors aren't really kept quiet. It might behelpful to implement better signage at entrances to these floors or to replacelarger tables (usually used for group studying) with individual cubicles. I reallyhope that there is someone actually reading these comments/rants of mine. Ifyou did take the time to consider what I have to say, then I thank you and wouldgive you a cookie if I could. Have a great day! :) [facilities] [negative]

Dec 4, 2012 12:51 AM

157 Can we please hire people who patrol the libraries to keep quiet study areasquiet? I find that this is particularly problematic on the third floor of the Science

158 The botton line: The library is crucial for a good portion of us (try visiting thelibrary during finals week). We can definitely afford to cut workers, as long as wekeep the ones who do their job well. Also, please fix the library booking system.I book rooms because I work as a tutor through LSS, and I've had my bookingsget lost multiple times, which is vastly inconvenient when I have to meet mystudents. [other funding] [facilities] [negative]

Dec 3, 2012 11:14 PM

162 IT is crucial to keep the same hrs as we have them right now. There is manystudents who use the library as a excellent resource to study. If it was posssiblethey should extend the hrs to 3am on weekdays then 12am [positive] [extendedhours]

Dec 3, 2012 10:59 PM

163 The need for the library hours is vast and highly necessary! Success of UCSCstudents is strongly correlated with having a given place to study such as thelibrary! [positive]

Dec 3, 2012 10:42 PM

164 Thank you for caring about the voice of the student body. [positive] Dec 3, 2012 10:41 PM

165 I would like to have the library open 24/7 during finals week. Thank you. [24] Dec 3, 2012 10:19 PM

166 I think our school's shortened library hours are unreasonable. Most universitieshave at least one library open 24 hours a day, which I believe is necessary for auniversity. [24]

Dec 3, 2012 9:39 PM

167 You guys are awesome! [positive] Dec 3, 2012 8:59 PM

168 I would like to extend the library hours so that I can study weekend mornings andevenings. It is too loud and distracting at any other place so I depend on thelibrary. [positive] [extended hours]

Dec 3, 2012 8:21 PM

169 The library is always pretty full, except for at the beginning of the quarter. It mightbe best to shorten hours for the first two weeks and bring them to normal hoursafter the two weeks. Also it might be possible to only open one library onweekends, but keep it open both days.

Dec 3, 2012 7:46 PM

170 Keeping Library hours is crucial to some people's ability to gain access to notonly spaces to study but also to items on reserve and computers. It would bevery sad to restrict this use because of budget cuts. Perhaps a rethinking of theschool's priorities should be made altogether. Other UC's have better hours andpay the same amount of money to go there.

Dec 3, 2012 7:24 PM

171 I think the library hours should stay the same. Not a lot of people have an areawhere they can spend time on their work in a silent area and I believe the libraryis perfect for this. Not everyone has a perfect schedule where they can study inthe afternoon between classes and the night or early morning is the only time for

172 I think that funds should be spent less on unnecessary products like interactivemaps at the front and rather more seating during finals and more hours.

Dec 3, 2012 6:32 PM

173 Keep the current library hours! The small fee is practically nothing in comparisonto what we gain from it.

Dec 3, 2012 6:12 PM

174 The library has been a huge help to me this quarter with their study rooms. Icouldn't even imagine not having access to those on the weekend!

Dec 3, 2012 5:57 PM

175 Every time I go to the library at the science and engineering, there is a nicegentlemen that works there at the reference desk on Monday, Wednesday, andFridays and he is just so helpful. I believe his name is Matt. My husband and Ijust adore him. Incredibly smart and always polite.

Dec 3, 2012 5:50 PM

176 I was a freshman during the last year the library opened at 10am rather than8am. It really affected my studies that I had no where to go in the mornings toget work done. I was a commuting student who utilized the campus vanpoolsystem and I was often on campus by 7am- and I had few good quiet places tostudy (and use that morning time effectively) until 10am. Keep them open!!

Dec 3, 2012 5:38 PM

177 24 hour library please!!! [24] Dec 3, 2012 5:24 PM

178 The university spends so much money on research, construction, andadministrative salaries. Something as simple as extended library hours go somany more miles to better our education than any of those. I'm a humanitiesstudent and a performing arts student. I see that as my classes are slashed, departments suspended, facilities neglected, and teachers laid off, math andscience facilities are retrofitted and renovated. The library is all I have left. Please extend hours so I can do my work and do well in this school which I payso much for!

Dec 3, 2012 5:24 PM

183 Money going toward library time will never be opposed by me. The library is anextremely necessary resource.

Dec 3, 2012 4:41 PM

184 Extend the hours to 24-7! It is not necessary to have both libraries open at thesame time. Implement some sort of rotational shift that would have one libraryopen late night while the other library is kept closed, then rotate the days. [24]

186 It is very useful to me to have access to the library in the early morning hours. Ioften use it as a way to access books before class. [collections]

Dec 3, 2012 4:11 PM

187 The Special Reserves Collection is AWESOME. So are the various peopleworking on restoration and digitalization of records in the basement. I wish theyhad more resources and some (or more) internship programs affiliated withvarious humanities majors, and more library classes. I think that's the key togetting people to see the importance of the library: show them what it does that'snot easily known. There's a lot that goes on in the library that people don't knowabout, and if there were more classes offered under various majors which werelibrary affiliated, I think people would appreciate the library more. I took a class inthe Special Reserves Spring Quarter 2012, and it was amazing. It made me re-examine the way information was presented over the ages, and fully appreciatethe diverse way we examine data in the digital age. It wasn't just about musty oldbooks, but about understanding what those books meant to the people whomade them, and why they are important to this day. They show us how difficult itwas for people to collect and spread correct information, and the strugglespeople had to go through to maintain a sense of society and culture. Peopledebated over fonts and margins, bindings and pigments, and all the informationhad to be copied by hand before the printing press was invented. Even then, withthe printing press, a great amount of work had to go into the making of books, and gave women a way to take part in the family business. The key thing aboutbooks is that whoever controlled the book's production controlled whichinformation was passed on, and when things were edited, why they were edited. These texts became the basis for scholars, and as educational systemsdeveloped, they became vital in shaping cultured society, the elite, and then withsimpler books, a wider audience. It made me appreciate the ability to just use acomputer, and although information isn't always presented as meticulously as ithas been in the past, it is more freely spread, and more easily known. No longerdo you need money to buy a book to get a tiny bit of information, but no matterhow much money you do or don't have, you can go to the library and find theanswer to your question with books, computers, and other forms of media. Thatis the power of the written word, and that is something I learned at the library.[collections]

Dec 3, 2012 3:53 PM

188 If the library reduces its already servery limited hours, I will leave this school andattend one that actually gives a shit about their students and student resources.

Dec 3, 2012 3:43 PM

189 The library is imperative to student success, without it UCSC would have to payits professors more money because they would actually have to spend the timeto teach thier students what they would have otherwise learned in the library. Also, extended library hours would increase student cohesion because it is agreat place to meet people and it would increase the academic success of manyas they would have a greater amount of time to study in a setting dedicated toknowledge and learning.

Dec 3, 2012 2:54 PM

195 It's hard to imagine McHenry not being available on Saturday at all, and $6.50 aquarter seems well worth the accessibility when put up against tuition. I use thelibrary pretty often, especially on weekends, in the morning, and late at nightbecause classes tend to be in the mid-morning and afternoons of weekdays.[Saturday]

Dec 3, 2012 12:16 PM

202 Thanks for all you do! Dec 3, 2012 11:34 AM

204 Keep the library open! Dec 3, 2012 11:29 AM

205 We should not have to fight to keep a library open. A library is a fundamentalpart of a university experience, and I am outraged that we are even having thisconversation.
