Letter from theExecutive Director2012 was an important year for us. We turned 100 years old, a significant milestone for this organization. We discovered that we are one of the oldest charities in the State of Florida . We created a vision for our organization as we work towards the next 100 years: “Leading the Way Because Every Life Counts”. This new vision (as well as our new logo) encompasses all that we do for animals. Finally, in 2012, we opened our Animal Health Center (AHC).

The AHC, a full-service animal hospital, will allow us to increase the spays and neuters that we provide for the public. Additionally, at the Center, we offer veterinary services ranging from vaccinations to complex surgeries, all at affordable prices. Proceeds from the AHC will benefit the mission and programs of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

With the opening of the AHC, we were able to add more space in the shelter to house more animals. We now have a designated puppy room with more cages to allow us to hold additional animals. We even added a patio for our incoming animals while they are waiting to be processed and a small room for our hard working staff to sit down and have their lunch! This additional space for the shelter has allowed our save rate to increase to 93%.

All of these improvements were done during this momentous year, and we once again received a 4-Star Charity Navigator rating, for the fourth consecutive year. This rating means that we practice sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. This is so important, because it lets you, our donors, know that we are using your contributions wisely.

2012 was a wonderful year for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and all the animals that we provide services for at the shelter and within our community. In July, 2012, we opened the doors to our new state-of-the-art Animal Health Center. Now we have the necessary resources and increased space to help even more pets in need. Last year alone, 12,701 pets were spayed and neutered and 19,487 pets receive affordable veterinary care at our Health Center. We also gave away or discounted more than $74,000 in medical services and products for client’s pets throughout the year. This is an amazing service that we offer to the community and it helps keep pets in their homes with the people who love them, instead of having to be given up for financial reasons.

Although the Animal Health Center is now open, we are not ready to slow down! We still have our sights set on building a new state-of-the-art shelter in the future in order to house more adoptable animals and save even more from being euthanized in our community. This is where your continued support is essential: it helps us to expand our services to more pets in need, and it sustains all the existing life-saving programs we offer today.
