2011-2012 seasOn OuTlOOkChris Haack doesn’t care for the word

“rebuilding.”“Whenever someone says a team is

rebuilding, it almost has a negative con-notation,” the Georgia men’s golf coach said. “Rebuilding makes it sound like the cupboard is bare. People may say we’re rebuilding this year, but I don’t think that’s the case at all. I think this is a transition year for us. We’re not rebuilding; we’re reloading. We may not have the quote-un-quote superstars, but we have extremely talented players who have a chance to make their mark.

“I really like this team and I think we’ve got a chance to do some special things. One of the great joys of coaching is seeing young men reach their potential. These guys are developing their games each and every day, and they’ll be ready when their chances come.”

The Bulldogs enter the 2011-12 cam-paign with their standard lofty expecta-tions – including competing for NCAA and SEC titles. In fact, Georgia’s players will have the opportunity to advance to the NCAAs from a rare home event. The UGA Golf Course will play host to an NCAA Regional in May, with six teams from the field moving on to the national meet. The Bulldogs have not served as the host team for a tournament since the SECs in 1998.

But before that takes place, the Bulldogs will use their regular season to gain valu-able experience.

The Bulldogs said goodbye to a 2011 senior class that was anchored by “The Big Three” of Harris English, Russell Henley and Hudson Swafford. That trio combined for 11 All-America honors, 10 All-SEC certificates, 12 medalist titles, 17 team tournament victories, two SEC Freshman of the Year awards, two SEC team titles and one National Player of the Year honor – not to mention that each already has a professional tournament victory under his belt. A year ago, English, Henley and Swafford made up three-fifths of the lineup as the Bulldogs finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Championship and earned a final ranking of No. 10.

In an unusual turn of events, the Bulldogs enter this season without any seniors. That leaves the mantle of leader-

ship to Georgia’s junior class of Bryden Macpherson and T.J. Mitchell.

Macpherson went 3-0 during the match play portion of the 2011 NCAAs as the Bulldogs advanced to the final match. He carried that momentum into the sum-mer circuit as he became just the second Australian ever to win the British Amateur, securing berths in the 2011 British Open and the 2012 Masters. Mitchell is the most experienced member of the Georgia roster, having competed in 17 collegiate events. He owns two top-10s as a Bull-dog, including a ninth-place finish in the 2011 NCAA Colorado Regional to help Georgia advance to the NCAAs. He also turned heads with a qualifying round of 61 at Athens Country Club.

“We are going to be relying on Bryden and T.J. so much this season,” Haack said. “For the last couple of years, they’ve been able to watch the older guys set the tone for our team by the way they went about their business. It’s their turn now. They can show our guys how it’s done both on and off the golf course. They’ve competed in some big events for us, and I have every confidence in them.”

The sophomore class is the biggest one the Bulldogs have with Brian Carter, Michael Cromie, transfer Mookie DeMoss and Keith Mitchell.

Carter redshirted a year ago, but he logged six tournaments during his rookie campaign in 2010. His best finish was a 10th-place effort in the Olympia Fields In-vitational. Cromie was in the lineup for five events a year ago, including the SEC Cham-pionship. Cromie took 25th in the South-ern Highlands Collegiate for his top effort.

DeMoss saw action in seven tournaments for Mercer University in 2011, coming in 16th in the Bandon Dunes Championship. Mitchell has yet to crack the Bulldogs’ five-man lineup, but he and Carter have made an impact off the course by spearheading Georgia’s community service efforts.

“Our sophomores have a golden op-portunity in front of them,” Haack said. “They’ve been with us long enough now to know what’s expected of them. They know what it takes to get into the lineup and what it takes to compete at a high level. We believe our sophomores will be key players for us this year.”

Georgia’s freshman class of Nicholas Reach and twins Sam and Sepp Straka ar-rives with impressive junior résumés and its members knowing they have the chance to compete right away for the Bulldogs. Reach made headlines last summer when he won the inaugural Junior Invitational at Sage Valley – a tournament that included the top junior golfers in the world – by eight shots, including a course-record 62 in the first round. Valdosta natives Sam and Sepp Straka helped Austria finish as the runner-up in the European Boys Team Championship. Sepp took the Class 5-A medalist title and Sam came in second as the Strakas led Lowndes High School to the state title.

“We feel like our freshmen are tremen-dous prospects,” Haack said. “The talent is there, and these guys all have the potential to get into the lineup right off the bat. We’ve been impressed with their work ethic thus far. As they continue to put in the work, they’ll get better and better and be able to help our program.”

Junior T.J. Mitchell is Georgia’s most experienced golfer, having played

in 17 tournaments — including the 2011 NCAA Championship.

Chris Haack was named the Georgia men’s golf coach on July 18,1996 – and he not only has sustained the Bulldogs’ lofty standards but he has pushed them to a new level.

Haack has guided the Bulldogs to two national championships (the only two in school history), seven Southeastern Conference crowns, 45 tour-nament victories, and several team and individual records.

The Bulldogs have eight top-10 showings at the NCAA Championships in the last 13 years, includ-ing the 1999 and 2005 national titles, runner-up efforts in 2007 and 2011, and a third-place show-ing in 2009.

Many of Haack’s players have been honored nationally and by the SEC for their efforts on the course, in the classroom and in the community. In fact, Haack has developed 50 All-Americans during his tenure, 10 more than the next-closest school in that span.

Georgia’s win last season at the Brickyard Col-legiate gave Haack 45 tournament titles, setting the school record. Hall-of-Famer Dick Copas previously set the benchmark with 44. Haack has led the Bulldogs to at least one victory in 13 of his previous 15 seasons, including two NCAA and

seven SEC titles. In 2010-11, Haack piloted the Bulldogs to the

final match of the NCAA Championship. That was Georgia’s second runner-up finish at the NCAAs under Haack, joining the 2007 squad. Harris Eng-lish, Russell Henley and Hudson Swafford capped their stellar collegiate careers with All-America honors.

In 2009-10, Haack coached Henley to National and SEC Player of the Year honors. He also guided the Bulldogs to three tournament titles, including the SEC Championship. The SEC title was Haack’s seventh, including his sixth in the 2000s, and the program’s 28th.

Haack’s Bulldogs also won the Charleston Shootout and the Morris Williams Intercollegiate. In the Williams Intercollegiate, Haack’s squad made up a 15-shot deficit after two rounds to win by one stroke – the largest rally in his tenure.

In 2008-09, the Bulldogs won five tournaments, including the SEC title. His Bulldogs finished No. 1 in the final Golfstat poll and came in third at the NCAAs for their fifth straight top-10 finish.

The 2007-08 Bulldogs finished the year with the No. 1 ranking. Haack’s team won three times and came in eighth at the NCAAs. In 2006-07, Georgia

• 1999, 2005 National Coach of the Year

• 1998, 2000, 2006, 2009, 2010 Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year

• 2 National Championships (1999, 2005)

• 50 All-Americans (8 1st Team, 16 2nd Team, 6 3rd Team, 20 Honorable Mention)

won five out of seven tournaments. Despite plac-ing second at the NCAAs, Georgia held the final No. 1 ranking. In 2005-06, Haack led the Bulldogs to a school-record-tying six tournament wins and he was chosen as the SEC Coach of the Year. He also was selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America as the 2006 head coach for the United States Palmer Cup Team.

The Bulldogs won three tournaments in 2004-05 – including the most memorable one in the spring as Georgia capped the season with a wire-to-wire win at the NCAAs. Haack was chosen as the National Coach of the Year.

Haack’s 2003-04 Bulldogs won the SEC title. In 2002-03, his Bulldogs finished 16th at the NCAAs and third at the SECs, but cracked the win column at the Tennessee Tournament of Champions Though his 2001-02 Bulldogs did not win a tour-nament, Haack still was recognized as one of the nation’s top coaches. He was chosen as coach for Team USA for the Palmer Cup.

Haack’s 2000-01 Bulldogs won six events, includ-ing a school-record four straight, and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation. Haack’s 1999-2000 Bulldogs won three tournaments and he earned SEC Coach of the Year honors.

Haack’s breakthrough season with the Bull-dogs came in 1998-99. No Georgia team had ever ascended to the No. 1 spot in the polls, but Haack’s team did so early in the spring campaign. The Bulldogs later validated their No. 1 ranking by winning the program’s first national championship. Haack was named National Coach of the Year.

In 1997-98, Haack led Georgia to four wins, including its first SEC crown since 1988. Haack’s first Georgia squad in 1996-97 showed glimpses of what lay ahead as the youthful Bulldogs finished fourth or better in seven of 11 events and ad-vanced to the NCAA Regional.

Before being named Georgia’s coach, Haack was a driving force for the American Junior Golf Association. He joined the AJGA in 1981 as a tournament director before becoming director of operations in 1984 and director of development in 1985. He also served a seven-year stint as captain of the Canon Cup West Team, squads that includ-ed Tiger Woods and Chris Riley. In an initiative be-gun as foundation director from 1988-90, he also organized and established fund-raising programs to build surplus moneys for the AJGA’s perpetuity, bringing in more than $750,000 for the founda-tion and other junior programs. Haack served as assistant executive director from 1990-96, helping manage a staff of 22 and an annual budget of $2.5 million. Additionally, he helped oversee the running of 38 events and 19 qualifiers nationwide.

The recipient of the AJGA Sportsmanship Award, Haack graduated from Newnan High School in 1978. He attended West Georgia College, where he played on the golf team, and he received his degree from Mellen.

Haack and his wife, Tori, have a son, Charlie, and a daughter, Katie.

Jim Douglas, who helped the Georgia men’s golf team win the program’s two national championships, rejoined the Bulldogs’ staff as the assistant coach in January of 2011.Douglas was Georgia’s assistant coach from

1997 through 2005, during which time the Bulldogs celebrated some of their greatest success. With Douglas as Coach Chris Haack’s right-hand man, Georgia won NCAA titles in 1999 and 2005, along with four Southeastern Conference championships (1998, 2000, 2001 and 2004). Georgia produced 26 All-Ameri-cans, 30 All-SEC picks, two SEC Players of the Year, two SEC Freshmen of the Year, 33 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections, six All-Amer-ican Scholars and an NCAA Postgraduate

Scholarship recipient in that span.Douglas served parts of the 2009-10 season

as a volunteer coach, including during Geor-gia’s run to the SEC title.“We are very happy that Jim is back with us,”

Haack said. “He brings so many qualities to the table. His contributions to our program – including areas like academics, recruiting, tournaments and practices – were critical to our success. Fortunately, he remained close to our program, so he was able to pick up right where he left off.”Last season, with Douglas assisting Haack in

the spring, the Bulldogs advanced to the final match of the NCAA Championship. Douglas helped seniors Harris English, Russell Henley

and Hudson Swafford cap their careers with All-America honors, while English was picked as an All-American Scholar.Douglas graduated from Georgia with a

double major in political science and history. He and his wife, Katherine, have two sons, James and Charles.

The Georgia men’s golf team’s quest for a national title came up short as Augusta State defeated the Bulldogs 3-2 in the finals of the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.

The Bulldogs got victories from senior Russell Henley and sophomore Bryden Macpherson, each of whom went 3-0 in match play at the NCAAs, but were unable to garner a third decision against Augusta State..

“The guys fought hard and they never gave up,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “It was a pretty tight match all the way around. I’m proud of these guys. They represented us well. The represented the ‘G’ and everybody should be really proud of them.”

ALL-AMERICA HONORS FOR SENIORSHarris English, Russell Henley and Hudson Swafford

— who capped their collegiate careers at the NCAA Championship — earned All-America honors.

PING and the Golf Coaches Association of America picked English for their Second Team, with Henley and Swafford earning Honorable Mention status. Golfweek tabbed English for its Third Team and Henley was named Honorable Mention.

English led the Bulldogs with a 72.39 scoring average, while Henley was next at 72.73 and Swafford was third at 73.20.

English and Henley ended their Georgia careers as four-time All-Americans, and Swafford was picked as an All-American three times. Collectively, they rolled up the following career numbers: 11 All-America honors, 10 All-SEC certificates, 12 medalist titles, 17 team tournament victories, two SEC Freshman of the Year awards, two SEC team titles and one National Player of the Year honor.

“Those guys were tremendous ambassadors for the golf team and for the University of Georgia on and off the course,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “They also were great leaders. They led by example with hard work and dedication. Everything they did was for the betterment of the team. We’re going to miss them. They have left an indelible mark on our program.”

HENLEY, ENGLISH WIN NATIONWIDE EVENTSRussell Henley and Harris English became just the second

and third amateurs to win on the Nationwide Tour.Henley won the Stadion Classic at UGA, then English won

the Children’s Hospital Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.“This was a dream come true for me,” Henley said. “Just

getting to play in this golf tournament was a tremendous opportunity, and to win it means the world to me. My goal is to be a professional golfer, and this reinforces to me that I

can compete at the professional level.”Henley finished with a two-shot lead over Troy Kelly. In Columbus, English finished at 14-under-par 270, one

shot better than Kyle Reifers and fellow amateur John Peterson. English birdied the 72nd hole to avoid a three-man playoff.

“That’s really what you dream about growing up. You want to put yourself in those positions to win. This is what you spend hours and hours practicing for as a little kid,” said English. “When I saw the ball disappear, it was the greatest feeling in the world. It’s pretty unbelievable.”

HENLEY HELPS U.S. RETAIN PALMER CUPRussell Henley and the United States won the Palmer

Cup at The Stanwich Club in Connecticut. Henley and the Americans won the Palmer Cup for the second straight year over their counterparts from Europe. The United States now leads the all-time series 8-6-1. Henley went 1-3 in his four matches.

MACPHERSON WINS BRITISH AMATEUR TITLEBryden Macpherson won the 116th British Amateur

Championship, earning spots in the 2011 British Open and the 2012 Masters.

Macpherson shot 75-70 in stroke play, then posted six straight wins in match play to win the British Amateur title. Macpherson went 3-0 in match play as the Bulldogs finished second at the NCAA Championships.

HENLEY, ENGLISH CHOSEN FOR WALKER CUPHarris English and Russell Henley were chosen for the

United States’ Walker Cup Team by the United States Golf Association.

The Walker Cup will be played Sept. 10-11 at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in Scotland. Team USA will battle amateur counterparts from Great Britain and Ireland.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Harris and Russell,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “They set their sights on making the Walker Cup team, and that’s exactly what they did. All their hard work has paid off with this selection. I could not be prouder of them. I know they will represent the University of Georgia and the United States in a first-rate manner in Scotland.”

With the selections of English and Henley, Georgia now has been represented in the Walker Cup by 15 golfers, including Vinny Giles (1969, 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1993), Danny Yates (1989, 1993, 1999 and 2001) and Jimmy Gabrielsen (1971, 1981 and 1991). Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell helped the United States win the Walker Cup in Ardmore, Pa., in 2009.

The biennial Walker Cup match consists of 18 singles matches and eight foursomes (alternate-shot) matches over the competition’s two days. Team USA has won the last three matches and leads the series overall, 34-7-1.

Following the 1999 NCAA Championship in Chaska, Minn.:• The announcer called out the wrong school as the winner

of the national title.• A torrential rainstorm hit the suburb of Minneapolis.• And a courtesy van provided to the actual champion was vandalized,

presumably by a not-so-gracious loser. But the players and coaches from the Georgia men’s golf team couldn’t

have cared less. All of that was a small price to pay for the program’s first national championship.

“It’s an indescribable feeling,” said Coach Chris Haack, whose Georgia (not Washington, as the announcer said) squad secured the trophy. “All the hard work, all the sacrifice, all the time spent hitting balls, it’s worth it. I always wondered what it felt like when teams like UNLV and Oklahoma State won the national title. Now I know — and it’s a great feeling. I am so proud of our guys. A four-day tournament is a real grind, but they stayed focused and played good, steady golf all week. They really played like champions.”

Especially on the last day. The Bulldogs entered the final round trailing Oklahoma State by five shots at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The players and coaches to a man said making up five shots was not a difficult proposi-tion — and they were right. Georgia actually pulled ahead after just two holes and extended its lead throughout the rest of the front nine before holding on down the stretch to win by three.

“We knew that we had to be patient on this course because so much can change so quickly,” Michael Morrison said. “You can’t take anything for granted. You have to play every shot as hard as the last one. You’ve got to play every hole to the best of your ability. I think we all did that.”

Particularly Ryuji Imada. He paced the comeback effort with a 5-under par 67, one off the course record for Hazeltine. Imada finished at 1-under 287, second behind Northwestern’s Luke Donald (284).

“It was one of the best 18 holes of golf I’ve ever seen,” said Haack, who sported a newly shaved bald head after the NCAAs as he made good on a pre-tournament promise. “Ryuji was spectacular. He certainly picked the

right time to turn it on. That could go down in history as one of the best final rounds at the NCAAs. The little man just put us on his back and took us to the title.”

Imada had a shot at winning the medalist title down the stretch, but he said he focused more on the team crown.

“The last thing I wanted to do was mess up and cost us the national cham-pionship,” Imada said. “I had a couple of chances to go at the flag, but I didn’t because it meant more for us as a team to win the national championship. I wanted to be aggressive, but I didn’t want to let the team down.”

Imada finished the year as the nation’s third-ranked golfer, trailing only Donald and Georgia Tech’s Bryce Molder.

“It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had. It’s unbelievable,” Nick Cassini said. “No matter what any of us do the rest of our lives in golf, we’ll be the 1999 national champions. It’s like a dream come true.”

Front row: Nick Cassini, Chris Haack and Ryuji Imada. Back row: Mark Northey, Michael Morrison, Jeremy Parrott and Jim Douglas.

With Coach Chris Haack rubbing the lucky coin in his pocket, Georgia cashed in at the NCAA Championship.

The Bulldogs went wire-to-wire as the tournament leader at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., finishing with an 11-shot advantage over instate rival Georgia Tech. Georgia fired an even-par 280 in the final round to wind up at 15-over 1,135.

“I could not be prouder of this group of guys,” said Haack, who carried a coin given to him by his daughter, Katie, that had the inscription, “Dad, I Love You.”

“I knew that we had the talent, the confidence and the demeanor to chal-lenge for the championship this year,” Haack continued. “It’s been a good year, but we only had two wins coming in. I knew if they all put it together, it would be special. They just happened to do it this week when it meant the most.”

“It’s awesome to go out like this,” said David Denham, the only senior in the Bulldogs’ lineup. “You live for moments like this. Every team strives to win the national championship, but not too many of them do it.”

“This is what you play for,” Richard Scott said. “This is what this team was put together for. It’s great to go out and win other tournaments, but this is the one we all play for.”

“This is the biggest one,” team captain Kevin Kisner said. “This is what you set your goals for. This is why we all came to Georgia. We’ve got too solid of a team not to win tournaments. When we all play well, it’s hard for us to lose.”

The Bulldogs entered the final round with a 9-shot lead over the Yellow Jackets, and they knew it would hard to give that kind of lead away. Still, when Brendon Todd’s putt rolled in on No. 18, the players and coaches were

all at once relieved and ecstatic.“This is the ultimate feeling,” Chris Kirk said. “It’s awesome. It’s a great

group of guys, and I have loved playing with them the last two years.”“It feels great,” Todd said. “It’s probably the biggest accomplishment any of

us have in golf. It’s just incredible to win the national championship.”Todd wound up as the Bulldogs’ top individual at 3-over 283, followed by

Kirk and Kisner at 5-over 285, Scott at 6-over 286 and Denham at 8-over 288. Todd finished seventh, and Kirk and Kisner were in the group that tied for 13th. Scott had a top-20 finish as he wound up 16th.

Opened in the fall of 2002, the Rankin M. Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center pro-vides the space and cutting-edge resources Georgia’s golfers and other student-athletes need to achieve their academic goals.

Adjacent to several athletic venues, the Smith Center is convenient for student-ath-lete access. Each of the computer worksta-tions is equipped with multimedia capabilities and high-resolution monitors with graphics and network cards. The computer lab also has access to the highest-quality network printers and scanners.

The 31,000-square-foot center serves the needs of all student-athletes at Geor-gia with tutorial rooms, conference rooms, counselors’ offices, computer labs and teach-ing space. There also is a lecture hall, student lounge and a large banquet area.

Built at a cost of $7 million, the center bears the name of the late Rankin M. Smith, a UGA alumnus and the longtime owner of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. The Smith family gave a generous gift of $3.5 million toward the center’s construction.

For eight straight years (2002-2009) and nine years overall, the Bulldogs earned the Faculty Athletics Representative Award for the Georgia men’s team with the highest team grade point average. In 2010 and 2011, Harris English was named a Cleveland Golf Scholar All-American.

Recent graduation rates released by the NCAA show that Georgia’s student-athletes generally meet or exceed that of the univer-sity population at UGA.

The Bulldogs were well represented at the Spring 2011 commencement exercises with (left to right) Russell Henley, Hudson Swafford, Coach

Throughout the years, the Athletic Association’s academic staff has devel-oped programs to address all aspects of a student-athlete’s college experience, including academic achievement, personal development and career planning/placement. Rachel Jones serves as the team’s academic counselor.

The primary emphasis of the Student Ser-vices staff is to assist UGA student-athletes in achieving their personal goals by ensuring that they earn a degree, by providing opportunities for personal growth and by offering guidance in making career and employment decisions.

The response to the career planning ser-vice has been especially positive. Southeastern employers seek student-athletes as employees because of good work habits acquired through athletics and their ability to manage time wisely.

Georgia’s golfers also have access to the Student Learning Center located at the heart of the UGA campus. It is a facility like no other, housing both classroom space and library space in such close proximity. Within its walls lie two dozen classrooms capable of seating 2,400 students and equipped with the very best technology of teaching.

The Georgia men’s golf program has pro-duced 28 Southeastern Conference champion-ships. That is more than any other league school and the most of any athletic team at Georgia. As the accompanying chart shows, the Bulldogs

have had success in several decades, including the 1950s and the 1960s when they won six in each. Under Chris Haack, Georgia’s current coach, the Bulldogs have won seven titles, including six in the 2000s.

Golfers associated with Georgia’s program made quite an impact in professional events in 2011. Bubba Watson notched two PGA Tour wins: the Farmers Insurance Open and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Chris Kirk won for the first time on the PGA Tour, taking the Viking Classic. Russell Henley and Harris English became the second and third amateurs ever to win on the Nationwide Tour. Henley won the Stadion Classic at UGA and English claimed the Children’s Hospital Invitational. Sandwiched between those victories, Erik Compton won the Nationwide Tour’s Mexico Open. Hudson Swafford posted his first professional win as he claimed the eGolf Professional Tour’s HGM Hotels Classic.

In the spring of 1924, a handful of Georgia students formed what was the university’s first-ever golf team. In those days, the team did not have coaches; rather, one of the players served as captain and made the decisions that guided the squad. Some of the first captains for the Bulldogs were Harris Jones, John Grant, Billy Oliver and Hugh Nunnally. The Bulldogs’ first coach came on board

in 1930 as Murray Soule took the posi-tion. He was succeeded by J.M. McFadden (1933-35), who passed the torch to R.L. Keener (1935-42). Keener led the Bulldogs to their first-ever SEC championship in 1941. Because of World War II, the Bulldogs disbanded for the next few years.Howell Hollis was named coach in 1946

and began to lay the foundation for the program. Serving from 1946 through 1970,

Hollis took 13 of his 25 teams to the NCAA Championships, including eight top-10 finishes. Hollis’ Bulldogs claimed 13 Southeastern Conference titles and he had 10 individual confer-ence champions. One of those, George Hamer in 1946, went on to win the national championship. During Hollis’ tenure, the Bull-dogs also played primarily dual

matches, posting a mark of 268-57-8.Hamer, who was nicknamed “The Georgia

Pine” because of his height, is still the only Bulldog to win the NCAA title (then known as the National Intercollegiates). He also won the Southeastern Amateur three times and the Georgia State Open and the Southern Amateur titles once apiece.Hollis was able to attract some of the

game’s best players to Athens during his tenure, including David Boyd, Jimmy Gabri-elsen, Vinny Giles and Danny Yates.Hollis stepped down following the 1970

season and he was succeeded by Dick Copas, a member of the UGA staff as an academic counselor and dorm director. Copas maintained the level of success that Hollis had begun as he guided the Bulldogs from 1971-96 to 17 NCAAs, including 10 top-10s, and seven SEC titles. Sixty-one of his protégés won All-SEC honors, while 31 were tabbed as All-Americans. Copas himself was named National Coach of the Year in 1978 and the SEC Coach of the Year seven times.Copas coached some of the most deco-

rated players in Georgia history, including Peter Persons, Chip Beck, Griff Moody, Matt Peterson, Paul Claxton and Franklin Langham. Chris Haack stepped from the ranks of

the American Junior Golf Association to assume the reins of the Georgia program after Copas. In just his third year on the job, Haack guided the 1999 Bulldogs to the program’s first national championship and he was named the National Coach of the Year. He then guided the 2005 Bulldogs to the national championship and again was chosen as the National Coach of the Year.To date, Haack also has guided the

Bulldogs to seven more SEC titles – giving Georgia a league-high 28 crowns. Under Haack, Georgia has set school marks for lowest team total in a tournament and a round as well as lowest mark by an individ-ual. Fifty of his players have been tabbed as All-Americans, while 53 of Haack’s players have been chosen All-SEC, including 1998 Player of the Year Jeremy Parrott, 2001 Player of the Year Nick Cassini, 2006 Player of the Year Kirk and 2010 Player of the Year Russell Henley.
