2012 Gardner-Webb Softball Media Guide

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 15 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, will begin play in 2012-13 with seven members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 11 member institutions comprise the 28-year League in 2011-12. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, plus the return of charter member Campbell University this year. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, more than 240 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship six times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had four NFL Draft picks, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last seven years – including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run), Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked

No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. Last season, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team – one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won four PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007 and tied for runner-up at the 2011 Open Championship. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its 27 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has a record number of NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last two years.

Dr. A. Frank BonnerDr. A. Frank Bonner

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his seventh year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took offi ce on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Aff airs. In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. Aft er a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualifi ed candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, offi cially moving from college to university in 1993. Th e institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with an outstanding faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. Th ey are parents of two adult daughters and fi ve grandchildren.

Chuck BurchChuck Burch

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 15th year as

Vice President for Athletics and his 30th year overall in athletics

administration.

The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Runnin’ Bulldogs

move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s

addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for

football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member –

which became official on July 1, 2008.

Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including

management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and

budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-

board improvements in facilities and the addition of five new sports

since arriving in 1997.

A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is

also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and quantity

of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions

created to assist and enhance the entire department.

GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance

since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA

above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years.

Gardner-Webb’s final year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was

fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong

academic performances by the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ student-athletes.

GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division

I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its first Atlantic Sun

Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for

the title. GWU also finished third in the men’s and women’s combined

sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural

Bill Bibb Trophy.

Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination

of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun

Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National

qualifiers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted

competitive success for the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ in 2006-2007.

Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and

former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as

Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental

in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also

served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant

Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-

1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984).

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s

degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from

Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in

Health Education from the University of Virginia, and currently serves

as the Dean of the Graduate School as well as a professer in the Physical

Education, Wellness and Sports Studies Department.

The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman

University, Danielle, a senior at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (17).

Scruggs is in her 32nd year of service with

Gardner-Webb University athletics, and

remains one of the most vital components of

the program’s success.

Scruggs has served as the Associate

Athletics Director and SWA since 2000.

Scruggs provides the athletics department

with consistent and dependable performance in

a number of crucial administrative areas. Her

primary responsibilities include monitoring the

athletics department budgets, monitoring the

operation of the department’s women’s varsity

programs, overseeing game-day operations

and assisting in the administration of the

University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs

plays an invaluable role in the success of

Runnin’ Bulldog athletics.

Pam and her husband, John, have one

daughter, Bonnie, who is a sophomore at

Gardner-Webb University.

Gardner-Webb University (GWU), located on 250 acres in Boiling Springs, N.C., is a

An integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff , athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Th e athletic training students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of nine certifi ed athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. Th e clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. Th e athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAAHEP, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must complete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certifi cation to become Certifi ed Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with fi rst-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen fi eld of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. Aft er their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

Th e 2012 squad is poised more than ever to make a run at the Big South Championship, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs return 16 players, including nine starters, from last year’s team that advanced all the way to the semifi nals of the 2011 Big South Soft ball Championship Tournament. Head Coach Tom Cole has a ton of experience returning, as redshirt-senior hurler Cindy Boomhower, along with seniors McKenzie Morenus, Jane Savage, Lindsea Hutchinson, Michelle Primm and redshirt-junior Melinda Dulkowski, all bring three years or more of experience to a team that is looking to take the next step up … winning a conference championship. Along with the experience, the Runnin’ Bulldogs have both talent and depth at every position across the board this season, as fi ve new freshmen join the fray, giving the Runnin’ Bulldogs a roster of 21 players from top to bottom in 2012.PITCHING Th e Gardner-Webb pitching staff returns in tact in 2012. Jessica Childers and Cindy Boomhower lead a talented and experienced group of pitchers that have seen a lot of innings in the circle for GWU over the past two seasons.Boomhower, who posted eight wins last season, returns for her redshirt-senior season. “We are hoping that Cindy is saving her best for her last season this year,” stated Coach Cole. Childers returns aft er a solid freshman season in which she led the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 10 wins and 109 strikeouts on the year. “ Jessica is everything we had hoped she would be,” commented Coach Cole. “With her talent and ability we believe that she will re-write all of the GWU pitching records during her time here.” Tying Childers with three saves last season was fellow sophomore Alyssa Gutierrez, who aft er seeing action in 18 games last season out of the bullpen, will be pushing for starting innings this season. “Alyssa came into the program with a desire and work ethic that is second to none. We were very happy with what Alyssa accomplished last year for us, and she didn’t let us down over this past summer, either,” continued Coach Cole. “We are very excited about how she has improved, but even more excited about how much better we believe she can become.” Junior Jessica Milligan will also be looked upon to get quality innings as will freshman Kellie Beres. “Milligan has always been a quality pitcher, the key is keeping her healthy;” said Coach Cole. “And as for Beres, good things come in small packages, and Kellie is very good. She can pitch, she can play outfi eld, and she is a serious off ensive threat. Our challenge this year will be utilizing all of Kellie’s talents.”CATCHING While Morenus started every game last season behind the plate for GWU, this season Coach Cole will have much more depth at the position in sophomore Elizabeth Williams and newcomers Amanda Gomes and Taylar Pridgen. Morenus, a former Big South First-Team All-Conference selection as a sophomore, led GWU with 11 doubles and 23 RBIs last season. Th e senior, who has thrown out 30 would be base stealers in her three years at GWU, will continue to solidify the middle of the lineup for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2012. Williams, who returns for her sophomore season aft er playing in 10 games last year as a true freshman, will push for playing time behind the plate in 2012. “Elizabeth has worked hard on both her off ensive and defensive skills,” said Coach Cole. “She’s very smart and has defi nitely improved since she arrived on campus as a freshman last year.” “We see Gomes getting playing time immediately as she can hit for power and percentage. She is very strong behind the plate, and she can also play fi rst-base,” added Coach Cole. “We believe that Amanda will have an immediate impact in the middle of our line-up.” “Pridgen, who can also play outfi eld, has both speed and power. Taylar is an extremely talented athlete who is also very coachable,” commented Coach Cole. “Taylar is getting better and better each and every day, and will be one-of-four players making the catching position one of the deepest positions on our team.” INFIELD Th e entire 2011 infi eld, which saw all four players in new positions to start the season, returns in 2012 with the additions of a number of new faces in Gomes, Mariana Gallardo and Savannah Burns. At fi rst-base, redshirt-sophomore Morgan Baker returns where she started 29 games a year ago. Baker, who was a Big South All-Conference First-Team selection in 2011, was second on the team with 10 doubles, three home runs, 19 RBIs and a .406 slugging percentage last season and will once again be a key component in the middle of the GWU lineup in 2012. With depth at the catcher spot this season, both Morenus and Gomes could also see time at fi rst-base. Th ey are both versatile players whose athleticism and soft hands will allow them to play the position with confi dence. Morenus has already showed her versatility as earlier in her career at GWU she saw time at third-base, shortstop and second-base. Returning at second-base is, 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year and Big South First-Team All-Conference selection, Samantha Meenaghan. Aft er transitioning from third-base to second-base early last season during her freshman year, Meenaghan became a constant at second, where she led the team with 58 total hits, 26 runs scored, 16 stolen bases and a .360 batting average on the year. Freshman newcomer Mariana Gallardo will provide depth for the Runnin’ Bulldogs at second-base, shortstop and outfi eld. According to Coach Cole, “Mariana is strong defensively and has both speed and quickness.” Gardner-Webb junior Jordyn Arrowood, who made the move from third-base to shortstop last season, will return to the shortstop position this season. Th e two-year starter on the left side of the infi eld not only brings experience to the lineup, but also provides a solid bat and plenty of speed.

At third-base, the Runnin’ Bulldogs have a ton of depth in freshman Savannah Burns, and returners Jablonski, Primm and Brittney Morrow.Burns, who could also see time at shortstop this year, brings an exceptional glove, a strong throwing arm, and a big stick to the hot corner. “Savannah made an immediate impact on this team the day she stepped on the fi eld,” stated Coach Cole. Jablonski, who made 37 starts last season at third-base as a true freshman, will again be competing for the starting job, while both Primm and Morrow bring a wealth of experience to the position for Coach Cole’s squad. “As an added attribute, Jablonski can also play shortstop and second-base, and Primm can play both fi rst and second-bases, giving us lots of depth and options in the infi eld,” stated Coach Cole. “Morrow has worked very hard on both her off ense and defense and as a result we have seen her skills improve a great deal since coming to GWU two-years ago,” commented Coach Cole.OUTFIELD Th e outfi eld for Gardner-Webb in 2012 is not only deep and talented, but also experienced with seniors Savage, Hutchinson and Dulkowski returning to headline a group that has six student-athletes that will push for playing time all season long. Savage and Dulkowski return aft er having started a combined 86 games last season in the outfi eld, combining to commit only four errors out of 93 total chances. Once more the duo will be asked to cause problems at the plate and on the base paths were their speed. Along with Savage and Dulkowski, fellow returners Hutchinson and Emily Bowman will be competing for playing time. Hutchinson provides a big bat for the GWU lineup having driven in 38 runs for GWU over the last three years, and Bowman’s ability to get on base and utilize her speed will be a key this year. Newcomers Beres and Pridgen will also be expected to see time in the outfi eld.SCHEDULE Once again the Runnin’ Bulldogs will have a tough slate in 2012, as Gardner-Webb will play 30 games on the road this season, including an 18-game road swing from February 24th through March 14th. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs will host Spartanburg Methodist College in a double-header exhibition on Saturday, February 11th, at 1 p.m., before kicking off its 2012 regular season slate with a double-header at home against Morgan State on February 17th at 1 p.m. Aft er a non-conference road double-header at Furman in Greenville, S.C. on February 18th, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will return home to host North Carolina A&T on February 21st and USC Upstate on February 22nd. Both are non-conference double-headers slated for a 1 p.m. start time at Varsity Field in Boiling Springs, N.C. Gardner-Webb will kick-off the 18-match road swing at the Seahawk Classic at UNC Wilmington on February 24-26th. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs will do battle with Kansas and host UNC Wilmington on Friday, February 24th, before taking on Fairfi eld on Saturday morning, February 25th. On Saturday aft ernoon, GWU will play in one of the two semi-fi nal games and will then compete in either the championship game or the consolation game on Sunday, February 26th. GWU will remain on the road for their next contest, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs will head down to Athens, Ga. to face off with the Georgia Bulldogs for a single game at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 29th. Th e following weekend, the Runnin’ Bulldogs return to tournament play, as Coach Cole’s squad will compete at the U of F Tournament for the second straight season hosted by Florida in Gainesville, Fla. on March 2-4th. On day one, March 2nd, the Runnin’ Bulldogs are slated to take on Tennessee State and Florida, while on Saturday, March 3rd, GWU will do battle with Eastern Michigan and Florida once more. On Sunday morning, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will take on both Eastern Michigan and Tennessee State once more in the round robin style tournament. Aft er a fi ve-day break, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will return to action, this time heading down the road to Rock Hill, S.C. to take part in the Winthrop-adidas Invitational on March 9-10th. Th ere the Runnin’ Bulldogs will take on Albany and UNC Wilmington on Friday March 9th and then both Bowling Green and St. John’s on Saturday, March 10th. Gardner-Webb will then play a mid-week double-header on the road at South Carolina State on Wednesday, March 14th, at 1 p.m., before setting their sights on Big South Conference play. In their fi rst home game in over a month, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will jump start their 2012 Big South Conference slate against the defending 2011 Big South Champions in Liberty University on March 24-25th. Th e two teams will play a double-header on Saturday, March 24th, at 1 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday, March 25th, beginning at 2 p.m. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs will then hit the road for a single conference game at Presbyterian on Wednesday, March 28th, at 3 p.m. in Clinton, S.C. and a three-game conference weekend series at Coastal Carolina on March 31st through April 1 in Conway, S.C. GWU will then return home to host new Big South Conference member Campbell University for a three-game weekend series on April 6-7th, with both days slated for a 1 p.m. start time, before welcoming the Charlotte 49ers to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a non-conference twin bill on Wednesday, April 11th, at 2 p.m. Aft er a weekend series at Winthrop on April 14-15th in Rock Hill, S.C., the Runnin’ Bulldogs will return home to host Presbyterian in a mid-week conference double-header on Wednesday, April 18th, at 2 p.m. and will then wrap up their 2012 home slate with a three-game Big South Conference weekend series versus Charleston Southern on April 21-22nd. Saturday, April 21st, is slated for the double-header starting at 1 p.m., while the third and fi nal game of the weekend series is set for Sunday, April 22nd, at 2 p.m. Gardner-Webb will then wrap up their regular season with a three-game series at Radford on April 28-29th, the site of the 2012 Big South Conference Soft ball Championship Tournament, which will be held May 10-12th in Radford, Va.

Th e winningest coach in Gardner-Webb soft ball history, head coach Tom Cole enters his 12th season at the helm for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Cole came to Gardner-Webb in 2001 and produced immediate results, supervising GWU’s transition to NCAA Division I status and directing the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a school-record 36 wins in just his second year in Boiling Springs. In 2011, Coach Cole took a very young team that consisted of only one senior, fi ve juniors and 12 underclassmen to an 18-28 overall record and a 6-12 Big South Conference record on the year. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs advanced to the semifi nals of the Big South Soft ball Championship Tournament for the fi rst time in their Big South history, falling short of the championship by one game. GWU had four players earn all-conference honors, as Samantha Meenaghan, Melinda Dulkowski and Morgan Baker were all named to the Big South All-Conference First-Team, while junior Jane Savage was rewarded for her work in the classroom with a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team. For the fi rst-time in GWU’s Division I history, the Runnin’ Bulldogs had a freshman receive the highest conference honor it can, as Meenaghan was named the 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year for her stellar play throughout the season. Meenaghan was also named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association University Division All-State Team, making it the third straight year that both Coach Cole and GWU have had at least one player receive this end of the year honor, and to the Big South All-Tournament Team. As a team in 2011, GWU hit .258, which ranked third in the Big South Conference and fi ft h in GWU’s Division I single-season record book. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs posted 311 hits and scored 132 runs on the season, while fi ve diff erent players hit over .260 on the year, which was led by Meenaghan with a .360 batting average on the year, which ranks fourth all-time in GWU’s Division I single-season history. In the circle for GWU in 2011, Cindy Boomhower, who also earned a spot on the Big South All-Tournament Team, led the way with a team-low 2.76 ERA and a team-high 134.1 innings pitched en route to eight wins and eight complete games. Freshman Jessica Childers proved to be a solid starter in the circle, improving throughout the season, as the righty led the team with 10 wins, 109 strikeouts and held her opponents to a .265 batting average on the year. Fellow freshman Alyssa Gutierrez tied with Childers for the team lead in saves with three on the season, as GWU’s pitching staff recorded six total saves on the year, the most in a single season for a Runnin’ Bulldog team since 2002 when GWU tallied eight saves. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs, which were 12-4 in 1-run games in 2011, also allowed only 222 runs for the 2011 season, which ranks as the fourth least amount of runs allowed in a single-season in its Division I history. Gardner-Webb fi nished the 2010 season in a three-way tie for third-place in the Big South Conference regular season standings, turning in an 8-10 conference record on the year. Overall the Runnin’ Bulldogs were 22-32 on the season, its fi rst 20 win season since 2008, but were even more impressive at home where they posted an 11-6 record. For the second straight year, the Runnin’ Bulldogs soft ball team advanced to the quarterfi nals of the Big South Conference Championship Tournament, this time falling to the host and No. 6 seeded Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs had four players receive postseason honors for the second straight year, as senior fi rst-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player McKenzie Morenus both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior pitcher Cindy Boomhower and senior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All-Conference. Coach Cole’s squad also placed 15 members on the 2010 Big South Presidential Honor Roll, a huge academic achievement for the Runnin’ Bulldog soft ball program. Fullwood, who was named to the All-Conference Academic Team, also earned a spot on the NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region All-Second Team and

Fullwood was also named as a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist, a fi rst in GWU’s history. Th e end of the 2010 season saw the rewriting of GWU’s Division I career record books, as departing seniors Christa Fullwood, Melody Harrell, Mandy Ward and Christine Murray all left their mark on the Gardner-Webb soft ball program. Fullwood fi nished her career as GWU’s DI career leader in batting average (.380) and in fi elding percentage (.992). Fullwood ranks second in career RBIs (107), second in doubles (31), third in home runs (20), third in total bases (272), tied for third in extra base hits (56) and fi ft h in walks (61). Fellow teammate Melody Harrell wrapped up her career second in extra base hits (57), second in total bases (292), second in runs scored (105), tied for second in triples (9), third in hits (190), tied for third in doubles (30), fourth in at bats (666), fourth in RBIs (103), fourth in home runs (18), fi ft h in batting average (.285) and fi ft h in stolen bases (37). Harrell is also the only Runnin’ Bulldog in GWU’s Division I history to have at least 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored in her career. Catcher Mandy Ward fi nished her four-year career at GWU as the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ DI leader in home runs (26) and ranks third in RBIs (106), third in fi elding percentage (.984), third in runners caught stealing (36), tied for third in extra base hits (56), tied for third in doubles (30), and fourth in total bases (265). Right-handed hurler Christine Murray, who shattered GWU season records as a junior, fi nished her career as the leader in strikeouts per seven innings pitched (7.47) and second in strikeouts (471). Murray also ranks third in wins (31), third in complete games (33), third in innings pitched (441.2), third in shutouts (8) and fi ft h in ERA (3.46). For the Gardner-Webb soft ball team, 2009 was a season of fi rsts - the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ fi rst year competing as members of the Big South and the fi rst ever appearance for Gardner-Webb in the Big South Soft ball Championship Tournament. Despite a very young team, as the roster consisted of seven freshmen and only two seniors, Coach Cole did not allow the youth to perturb the Runnin’ Bulldogs, as GWU picked up 19 wins on the season. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs entered its fi rst ever Big South Soft ball Championship Tournament in 2009 as the No. 5 seed, but turned some heads in the three-day event. Gardner-Webb went 2-2 in the tournament, defeating No. 4 Charleston Southern in the opening round and then eliminating No. 6 Coastal Carolina in the fi rst elimination game of the championships. While at the tournament the Runnin’ Bulldogs made history, as in the 12-8 win over No. 6 Coastal Carolina, the two teams combined for 20 runs, the third most in Big South Soft ball Championship history. GWU had four players receive postseason honors, as junior fi rst-baseman Christa Fullwood and sophomore utility player Kelsey Witter both earned spots on the All-Conference First-Team, while junior shortstop Melody Harrell and junior catcher Mandy Ward both were named to the Second-Team All- Conference. Th e four all-conference selections were the most ever to date for a GWU team in one year since the Runnin’ Bulldogs moved to the NCAA Division level in 2000-01. Fullwood along with Christine Murray were both named to the 2009 Big South Soft ball Championship All-Tournament Team as well. In 2009, Gardner-Webb’s Christa Fullwood also made waves nationally, as at the conclusion of the season, the junior was ranked seventh in the nation in batting average with her average of .460 on the year. Fullwood was also ranked 23rd in the country in on-base percentage at .519 and 48th nationally in slugging percentage at .719. Fullwood also was named to the All-Conference Academic Team and also earned a spot on the North Carolina All-State University First-Team by the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association. Th e 2008 Gardner-Webb team was able to reach the A-Sun Tournament for the third consecutive season by earning the No. 6 seed. Cole and his squad went into the tournament and shocked No. 1 seed Lipscomb by a 3-2 score. Th e team competed just as hard in the classroom, fi nishing with the No. 2 grade point average (3.45) in the country among all NCAA Division I soft ball programs while 10 GWU players were named All-American Scholars. In 2007, Cole guided the program to a 10-7-1 record in the A-Sun and a 35-26-1 overall mark, recording its fi rst-ever postseason win at the Division I level. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs, with solid all-around team play, earned the No. 2 seed in the league and advanced to the conference championship for the fi rst time in the program’s history. Th e team broke nearly every major off ensive statistical category en route to a second-place fi nish in the league during regular-season play. Th e 23.5 game improvement from the 2006 campaign marked the eighth-best turnaround in Division I history.

Melody Harrell fi nished the season ninth in the NCAA with 1.09 RBIs per game aft er amassing 51 in just 47 games. Abbie Looper, aft er blasting one fi nal triple in her career in the second round of the A-Sun Tournament, ended her season 14th nationally in triples per game (0.10). Off the fi eld, Joanna Ward earned fi rst-team ESPN Th e Magazine Academic All-District III honors. Harrell garnered A-Sun All-Freshman team accolades. Aft er the 2007 season, Cole took over the reigns of the Michigan Ice professional soft ball team for the fi nal three series of the season. While with the Ice, he was able to coach his former student-athlete and former assistant coach, Lani Shaff er, who was playing her second season with the team. With only one senior on the squad and 11 underclassmen, Cole led his young 2006 team to a 12-38 record, fi nishing 7-13 in the Atlantic Sun despite having to deal with multiple injuries to the pitching staff . Th e seven wins were good enough for a spot in the conference tournament. Jessi Williams, who led the team in seven off ensive categories, was named Second-Team All-Conference and Second-Team ESPN Th e Magazine Academic All-District III. In 2005, Cole saw his Runnin’ Bulldogs post a 19-33-1 mark while suff ering through a plague of assorted injuries, which hampered the squad all season. Not all was lost however, as Rachael Riopel was named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun and was tabbed by CoSIDA as an ESPN Th e Magazine Academic All-American Th ird-Team. Th e North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association also selected Riopel to the North Carolina All-State Team. Cole guided Gardner-Webb to the nation’s 14th-best turnaround in 2004, as it posted a 30-32-1 record to improve 10.5 games from the previous season. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs also went 11-9 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, good enough for a sixth-place fi nish and the program’s fi rst-ever appearance in the A-Sun Championship. Aft er leading the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a spot in the A-Sun Championship and just the third 30-win season in school history, Cole was voted as the A-Sun Coach of the Year by his league peers. Now with 11 seasons under his belt in Boiling Springs, Cole owns a 245-341-3 record at Gardner-Webb, making him the only coach in school history with over 200 career victories to his credit. Off the fi eld, Cole’s teams have been extremely successful, as on three separate occasions, he has had the program rated in the top-20 academically by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. In 2008 the team fi nished with the No. 2 grade point average (3.45) in the country among all NCAA Division I soft ball programs, while 10 GWU players were named All-American Scholars. Following the tremendous 2007 campaign, Cole’s team had 10 student-athletes garner NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete awards. Th e team fi nished fourth nationally with a 3.493 GPA. In 2006, he had nine earn NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete status while the team placed seventh with a 3.43 GPA. Aft er the 2005 season, fi ve were named to the NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete roster. In 2003, the team was 20th in the NFCA with a 3.24 GPA. Eight of his student-athletes were named NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete. All 11 of Cole’s teams have recorded a GPA of at least 3.07 since his arrival at GWU. In 18 years as a collegiate head coach, Cole has put together a 371-509-3 career record. He picked up his 300th career victory with a 6-0 win over Presbyterian on March 18, 2008. Prior to coming to GWU, Cole was the head coach at NCAA Division III Elmhurst (Ill.) College. Th ere, the Jamison, Pa., native inherited a program that had to forfeit the last two games of its previous season due to a lack of players. Cole wasted little time in turning around the struggling program and during his fi ve seasons there, became the winningest coach in the history of the program. In 1997, Cole was named the CCIW Coach of the Year and the NFCA Division III Midwest Regional Co-Coach of the Year. Before his tenure as Elmhurst, Cole spent two years as an assistant at Kutztown (Pa.) University with the soft ball and women’s basketball teams. From 1988-92 he was the head soft ball coach, head women’s basketball coach and a physical education instructor at Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Cole also served a fi ve-year stint as athletics director and head coach for soft ball, girl’s basketball, and volleyball at Orlando Christian (Fla.) High School. Cole earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation and parks administration from North Carolina State University in 1977. Cole then went on to get his master’s degree from Florida International University in 1989.

AC Stacie ReichertStacie Reichert

Former Gardner-Webb standout Stacie Reichert returned to Boiling Springs as an assistant coach on Tom Cole’s staff in August 2007 and is now in her fi ft h year as the pitching coach for the Runnin’ Bulldogs soft ball team. With a very young pitching staff in 2011, Reichert relied on redshirt-junior hurler Cindy Boomhower to help lead a group of arms that included a sophomore, a redshirt-freshman and two true freshmen, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs looked to continue to add to its success in only its third year in the Big South Conference. In 2011, Boomhower, who earned a spot on the Big South All-Tournament Team, led the way with a team-low 2.76 ERA and a team-high 134.1 innings pitched en route to eight wins and eight complete games. Freshman Jessica Childers proved to be a solid starter in the circle, improving throughout the season, as the righty led the team with 10 wins, 109 strikeouts and held her opponents to a .265 batting average on the year. Fellow freshman Alyssa Gutierrez tied with Childers for the team lead in saves with three on the season, as GWU’s pitching staff recorded six total saves on the year, the most in a single season for a Runnin’ Bulldogs team since 2002 when GWU tallied eight saves. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs, which were 12-4 in 1-run games in 2011, also allowed only 222 runs for the 2011 season, which ranks as the fourth least amount of runs allowed in a single season in its Division I history. In 2010, her third season as the GWU pitching coach, Reichert help guide Cindy Boomhower back from injury in 2009 to a place on the Big South All-Conference Second-Team. Boomhower posted a 2.53 ERA on the season and held her opponents to a .257 batting average while striking out a career-high 136 batters. Christine Murray collected a team-high 142 strikeouts in 2010, as the senior hurler tied with Boomhower with three shutouts on the season. Under Coach Reichert’s tutelage, Murray fi nished her career as the leader in strikeouts per seven innings pitched (7.47) and second in strikeouts (471). Murray also ranks third in wins (31), third in complete games (33), third in innings pitched (441.2), third in shutouts (8), and fi ft h in ERA (3.46). In her second season with the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2009, Reichert had a tough task of mending together a pitching staff that was devastated by injuries and untimely illnesses all season long. Despite the obstacles, she helped junior hurler Christine Murray to 11 wins and a place on the 2009 Big South Championship All-Tournament Team. In the regular season conference games only, Murray was fi rst in the Big South in innings pitched (90.0), strikeouts (98), and games started with 13. On the overall season, Murray was fi rst in the conference in strikeouts (193), third in the conference in opposing batting avg. (.250), third in innings pitched (181.1). Murray was twice named the New Balance Pitcher of the Week, coming on April 6 and April 23 and recorded a streak of 23 consecutive innings without issuing a walk. During her fi rst season as an assistant coach, she helped her alma-mater to the fourth-best ERA in the school’s Division I history. Reichert also helped rookie Cindy Boomhower record the fewest walks per seven innings in GWU’s history, allowing just 0.91 walks per seven innings pitched. Reichert also directed Christine Murray to fi rst place in the record book for strikeouts per seven innings as she struck out 7.46 batters every seven innings pitched. Reichert, who topped multiple single-season and career categories for the Runnin’ Bulldogs during her playing days, returned to Gardner-Webb aft er coaching at Frostburg State from 2005-2007. Reichert etched her name in multiple categories throughout her career. Upon graduating, she was the single-season leader in wins, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and shutouts. She topped the school’s record book for career wins, saves, complete games, innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts per seven innings, ERA and shutouts. During her freshman season, she recorded a team-best 69 strikeouts while tallying a 2.36 ERA. Reichert led the team in wins her sophomore campaign while amassing an impressive 2.12 ERA in 28 appearances. She earned Second-Team All-Conference honors her junior year and was named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association All-State Team. Reichert posted 18 wins and led the A-Sun with a school-record 213 strikeouts. She also tossed a career-best 1.71 ERA. Reichert fi nished her career in 2005 by posting 166 strikeouts in 183 innings with a 2.33 ERA. Reichert received her Master’s degree from Frostburg State in May 2007 in Human Performance. She currently resides in Shelby, N.C.

AC Diana DealDiana Deal

Diana Deal, a former standout soft ball player for Appalachian State University, enters her second season as a full-time assistant coach and her fourth year overall on head coach Tom Cole’s staff having served the previous two years as a graduate assistant coach. Deal assists in everyday happenings of the GWU soft ball program including on the fi eld coaching, recruiting, travel and fi eld upkeep. Deal also assists head coach Tom Cole with the Runnin’ Bulldog hitting and off ense. With the departure of three of its top-four hitters from 2010 due to graduation, Deal had to help tutor a lot of young players at the plate in 2011 as well as shift a number of returners around in the line up. As a team in 2011, GWU hit .258, which ranked third in the Big South Conference and fi ft h in GWU’s Division I single-season record book. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs posted 311 hits and scored 132 runs on the season, while fi ve diff erent players hit over .260 on the year. Freshman Samantha Meenaghan led GWU with a .360 batting average on the year, which ranks fourth all-time in GWU’s Division I single-season history, and was named the 2011 Big South Freshman of the Year as well as to the Big South All-Conference First-Team. Joining Meenaghan, who was also named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Team and the Big South All-Tournament Team, on the First-Team All-Conference Team in 2011 was redshirt-sophomore outfi elder Melinda Dulkowski and redshirt-freshman Morgan Baker. In 2010, the Runnin’ Bulldogs had four players hit over .270 on the season, as senior Christa Fullwood led the team with an average of .389 and was in the top-fi ve in the Big South Conference in almost every off ensive statistical category. Also in 2010, GWU knocked out 342 hits on the season, the fi ft h-most in GWU’s Division I single-season history, and scored 196 runs on the year, the third-most in a single season for the Runnin’ Bulldogs since 2001. Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs also blasted 38 home runs, the second most in a single season since GWU hit 52 as a team in 2007, while the team’s 96 extra base hits ranks third in the record books for a single season. Deal, formerly Diana Cook, came to Gardner-Webb aft er a stellar playing career at Appalachian State. While with the Mountaineers, Deal virtually re-wrote the school’s record book. For a single season, she ranks fi rst in walks, games played and started while also being etched in the record book as second for runs batted in, and third in both doubles and home runs. On the defensive side, Deal was fi rst in fi elding attempts, putouts and double plays. For her career, she is fi rst in fi elding attempts, putouts, double plays turned and walks. Deal is second in at bats, runs scored, games played, games started and in home runs. She also fi nished her career by notching third-place overall for career RBIs and total bases. Deal also brings a wealth of coaching knowledge to an already strong staff . Deal was a camp counselor from the fall of 2003 through the spring of 2006 at Appalachian State youth soft ball clinics, instructing beginners to advanced students in soft ball skills and strategies. For three summers, she was a volunteer assistant coach for the Cabarrus County Challengers ASA soft ball team. Deal graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education K-12 in December 2007 from Appalachian State and received her Master’s degree in Sport Science and Pedagogy from Gardner-Webb in August 2010. Diana married Jeff Deal, a N.C. State Highway Patrolman, on August 14, 2010.

2011 Season in Review2011 Season in Review Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs lost their top three hitters and starting ace due to graduation heading into the 2011

season, yet faced the challenge head on, posting 18 wins on the year and advancing all the way to the semifi nals

of the 2011 Big South Soft ball Championship.

Head Coach Tom Cole’s squad had four student-athletes earn Big South Conference postseason honors, as

freshman second-baseman Samantha Meenaghan highlighted the group by being named the 2011 Big South

Freshman of the Year. On top of the Freshman of the Year award, Meenaghan joined redshirt-sophomore

outfi elder Melinda Dulkowski and redshirt-freshman fi rst-baseman Morgan Baker on the Big South All-

Conference First-Team, while junior Jane Savage was named to the Big South All-Academic Team.

Meenaghan, who was also named to the NCCSIA University All-State Soft ball Team, and Cindy Boomhower

each earned a spot on the Big South All-Tournament Team, helping to lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs to the

semifi nals where a loss to Liberty, the eventual champions, ended their season

Th e 2011 Runnin’ Bulldogs’ team batting average of .258 overall for the year ranked fi ft h overall in GWU’s

Division I single-season record books, while GWU’s nine triples and 39 stolen bases both rank sixth overall by a

team in a single-season since 2000.

GWU’s six total saves, which came by way of the freshmen duo of Jessica Childers and Alyssa Gutierrez, was

the second most recorded by a GWU team in a single-season since the 2002 team posted eight saves overall.

Individually, Meenaghan’s .360 batting average for the season ranks as the fourth highest average in GWU’s

Division I single-season history, while her 16 stolen bases ranks ninth overall. Junior McKenzie Morenus’ 11

doubles on the year placed her in a tie for seventh overall for the most doubles in one season, while Baker’s 21

base-on-balls is tied for the seventh most walks in a single-season in GWU’s 11-year Division I history.

In the circle, Childers’ 10 wins was tied for the ninth most in a single-season for a GWU pitcher, while her

three saves placed her in a tie for the third most in a single-season with fellow teammate Gutierrez. Childers,

who led the team in strikeouts on the year, fi nished the year tied for eighth overall for the most strikeouts in a

single-season, tying Christine Murray with 109 strikeouts.

Gardner-Webb started the season out at 2-2, posting back-to-back wins over Furman in the Runnin’

Bulldogs’ home opener, then hit a rough patch, going 1-8 over their next nine contests at the Seahawk Classic

and UF Lipton Invitational.

Aft er going 3-2 at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational, the Runnin’ Bulldogs dropped two at Charlotte and then

bounced back to win both games of a twin bill at North Carolina A&T to move to 8-14 overall heading into Big

South play.

Gardner-Webb opened up their conference slate with a split at Presbyterian and then took one of three from

Radford at home to improve to 10-17 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

A win at home over PC put the Runnin’ Bulldogs at 3-3 in conference play, however, Gardner-Webb would

then drop their next six conference games, fi ve of which were at home, to fall to 3-9 in conference play and 11-23

overall.

Th e Runnin’ Bulldogs would fi nish the regular season out on a high note, winning fi ve of their last eight

games, with three coming in conference play, putting them at 16-26 overall and 6-12 in the Big South, giving

them the No. 6 seed overall at the 2011 Big South Soft ball Championships.

GWU opened up play at the conference championship tournament with a fi rst round 3-2 win over

Presbyterian and then used a late rally to edge Winthrop 2-1 and advance to the semifi nals. Th ere the Runnin’

Bulldogs met the Liberty Lady Flames, who defeated GWU 1-0 and then 6-1 in back-to-back contests to end the

Runnin’ Bulldogs’ season at 18-28 overall.
