Last weekends Autozone Powerboat Champi-onship hit the water in beautiful downtown, Memphis, TN. As the last race of the season drivers competed for the title of Southeast Divisional Championship and finalized the Formula 3 series points championship. The team arrived in Tom Lee Park on Friday, October 12th for registration and inspection. We then joined our fans at the beautiful Holiday Inn - Memphis Wolfchase Galleria for an evening of relaxation and entertainment. The Autozone Powerboat Championships weekend itinerary composed of a one-lap time trial and two X 10-lap qualifying heat races on to establish the line-up for the final competi-tion. This event will be televised in an hour long program broadcast on SportSouth with be released in approximately 4 to 5 weeks post event. SportSouth is seen in nearly 10 million households in 34 markets and in 6 states throughout the southeastern United States.

Post-Race Report

Time Trials As ten of the nations top Formula 3 powerboats line-up for the vital one-lap time trial, race officials informed our team we would be first on the course. The course was a 32 to 34 second oval course with 4 turns made from orange pillow buoys. The Mississippi River’s current was extremely fast with wind gusts at 10 to 15 mph. This environment toler-ated only precision driving a mistake would be detrimental. As the ten Formula 3 tunnel boats finished time trials the team was informed by the race committee we were second on pole.

Qualifier Heat 1 The white flag dropped and teams jumped to the commitment buoy. The team was in second place and fight-ing hard to hold off the Amsoil spon-sored Formula 3 team. Turn 4 before the checkered flag the boat hit a roller and wasn’t able to set in the corner. We were unable to hold the second place position and finished a very close third in the first qualifying heat.

Qualifier Heat 2 During the second qualifying heat boats are inverted placing the slower boat in the pole position. The team was now at the back of the dock and we needed to fight our way to the front. As the race started we jumped into a clear second, we then rounded turn 3 and 4 we were in the lead. The next 7-laps we fought to keep the lead with the help of teammate, Sam Miller. The second qualifying heat was called at lap seven due to dislodged and destroyed course buoys. As Sunday rolled in the Memphis winds gusted at over 25 mph and the race was called due to unsafe conditions. The results of the qualifying heats would now determine the Southeast Divisional Championship. The team was tied with teammate, Sam Miller for qualifying points. Race officials broke the tie by the fastest time and teammate Sam Miller won. We finished as the first runner up of the Southeast Divisional Championship A special thank you to our team, sponsors, fans and volunteers that made this race and season possible. The series points championship is currently being calculated and will be announce shortly.
