He chronicles landmark buildings in Dallas that are now gone. Most were destroyed by the wrecking ball as the city continued to grow and change. Doty bemoans the “this for that” trend in Dallas construction. For example, the current site of One AT & T Tower was built in 1980 on the site of the historic Baker Hotel. However, the Baker Hotel was built in 1925 on the site of the smaller red-bricked Oriental Hotel which was constructed in 1893. So the Oriental Hotel was demolished for the Baker Hotel and the Baker Hotel for the One AT & T Tower – “this for that.” The book, Lost Dallas, has pictures of 209 lost local landmarks. But the title “Lost Dallas” means something different to me than the city’s reputation for tearing down its history. The word “lost” best describes the majority of the residents of Dallas. Our city continues to grow in population, diversity, and lostness. From a spiritual perspective, we are a “lost Dallas.” Concerning the population of Dallas and Rockwall counties, missiologists estimate that at least two-thirds do not have an evangelical faith. Jesus told three parables in Luke 15 about lostness. He described a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. Jesus revealed God’s heart toward the lost. WELCOME NEW MEMBER CHURCHES Bobby Martin, leadership development

In the “church world,” lists, goals, how-to’s, and seven steps to this-or-that are easy to find. But as Christian leaders how do we “lean not on [our] own understanding [but] in all [our] ways acknowledge Him” (Prov. 3:5-6)? Often organizations and leaders default to planning and taking action. Even Christian groups usually plan, then act—though we may ask God’s blessing on our plan. Don’t we think that God already has a plan? Should we not

be doing more waiting on the Lord, and then moving more quickly in active obedience when He does make His direction known? Jesus’s example shows that this is far from a lazy, passive direction.

One practical way our DBA staff already seeks to follow God in this manner is with our consistent prayer that God send workers already equipped for their mission into the harvest field (see Luke 10:2). At a recent staff retreat, God led us, through prayer,

in these directions:1. As a staff, learn to corporately practice (and model for our churches) the centrality of the Spirit’s guidance and empowerment in everything that we say, do or promote.2. Respond fully as we are expectant that God will raise up (or prompt us to begin) important relationships with new, uninvolved or under-involved pastors, leaders, and churches. Stay tuned as we move in these directions together as a staff and with our service to the churches of our association.(Adapted from Scott Coleman’s blog, found at www.dbablogs.com)

Talking about the diversity of the church, pastor Gary Cook says, “We are not the church that we were fifty years ago, but it is quite possible that we are exactly the church God intends for us to be today!” Gaston Oaks Baptist Church is a model for churches in transitional communities. They have seen the changing faces in their neighborhood as an opportunity, not as a problem.

Gaston Oaks is a multiethnic church with five different congregations meeting in the same facility. Each congregation has their service in their own language. Once every 3 months, all the congregations worship together. Africans,Hispanics,Karen,Bhutaneseand Anglos share more than a building. All congregations are invited to participate in important events, like baptisms and other types

of celebrations. As we think about models of multiethnic churches, Gaston Oaks is a beautiful example!

ANNUAL CELEBRATION’S STUDENT RALLY FEATURES CAMP PERSONALITIES FOR SUMMER 2013

Churches can join DBA as new church plants, provisional members, or full members. DBA’s bylaws require that churches desiring provisional or full membership enter a 12-month “watchcare” process. Watchcare helps both the church and the association get acquainted and discover opportunities for partnership. During the last 10 months, the following churches have become full members of DBA or have entered the watchcare process: Watchcarechurches: The Way Church, Sunnyvale; Northview Baptist Church, Irving; Unity in the Covenant of Christ, Dallas; Shiloh

Missionary Baptist Church, Garland; New Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, Dallas; New Friendship Baptist Church, Dallas; Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Dallas; Greater Faith Temple, Duncanville. Fullmembershipchurches:Homprakhoon Baptist Church, Dallas; Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church, Dallas; Victory Temple Worship Center, Fort Worth. Welcome new members of Dallas Baptist Association!

CHURCH COLLABORATES WITH MISSION SERVE Jana Jackson, family & community ministries

Marco Castro, Jr., spent a week of his summer serving with a Mission Serve work crew based at Grace Temple Baptist Church. He helped build a wheelchair ramp for a disabled neighbor’s home. When I asked him what he learned, he said, “Teamwork.” “None of us

can do this by ourselves.” Grace Temple hosts Mission Serve teams every summer. YoungadultsfromallovertheUnited States come to Dallas to complete minor repairs on homes identified for code compliance by the City of Dallas. Many of these homes are owned by senior adults and people with disabilities who are unable to manage the repairs themselves. In the evenings, the students participate in worship with a Christian band and speaker provided by Mission Serve.

The students sleep on the church floor, and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief helps the church by providing mobile shower stalls. Grace Temple pastor Ryan Jespersen hopes

more churches get involved with Mission Serve next summer. “We particularly need churches to serve lunches during the week to the work crews,” he says. For more information, contact pastor Ryan or visit www.mission-serve.com.

This event is part of DBA’s annual celebration

Students ministers should make plans now to bring their youth groups to DBA’s student rally at the annual celebration, 5:00 p.m., October 21 at Dallas Baptist University. The free rally features speaker Wes Hamilton and The Justin Cofield Band. Hamilton and the band are the camp personalities for DBA’s Student Camp at the Mount in 2013. The rally on October 21 gives students and ministers the opportunity to worship as well as preview next year’s summer camp. For more information, see www.dba.net/annualcelebration.

Mancil Carroll, The Way Church; James Monk, Unity in the Covenant of Christ; and Larry Pittman of Northview Baptist Church are welcomed into the association as watchcare churches by executive director Bob Dean at a recent executive board meeting.
