Letstakeastepbackintimeto1951.LucilleBallandArthurGodfrywerethetelevisioncelebritiesoftheday.Theaveragehomecost$9,000andtheaverageincomewas$3,500.However,maybemoreimportanttoallofusheretodayisthefactthattheAmericanAngusAssociationissuedtheveryfirstjuniormembershipin1951.Ofcourseatthattime,therewasnotaJuniorActivitiesDepartmentandcertainlynotaNationalJuniorAngusShoworLEADconferenceforthesenewmemberstoattend;butfora$5membershipthesejuniorswereallowedtoownandtransfercattleintotheirnamejustlikemembersoftheregularAmericanAngusAssociation. Sincethatfirstmembership,nearly80,000havebeenissued.Toputthatintoperspective,thatisenoughpeopletofilltwoaveragesizedfootballstadiums!EvenwithouttheadvantagesandopportunitiesthatcomewithbelongingtotheNationalJuniorAngusAssociationthatweoftentakeforgrantedtoday,thesejuniorswouldhavethehands-onexperienceandeducationtobeambassadorsforthebeefindustryregardlessoftheprofessionorvocationthattheychose. Aswebringthissameprincipleintomoderntimes,thepossibilitiesandopportunitiesaremuchmoreexciting.Thankfully,theAmericanAngusAssociationviewed“theircollectiveresponsibility”totheJuniorAngusprogramandmoreopportunitieswereadded.Inadditiontotheshowring,todaywelearnAngushistory,animalscienceandagriculturalfactstocompeteinquizbowls.Westandupinfrontofadultswhoaretheleadersofourbreedandareverysuccessfulintheirownlivestogivespeechesandsalestalks.Wehaveexperiencewithreallifeeventsfrominterviewsandresumestohowtopreparedifferentcutsofmeattotheirfullpotential.Weseetheresultsofcarcassevaluationsandhowtheyarerelevanttotheindustry.WealsomakefriendswithpeoplefromalloverthecountryandhavetheopportunitytoknowsomeofthemostsuccessfulpeopleintheAngusbreed. Fromtheageofninethroughoutourteenageyears,westayinhighgearlookingforwardtothenexteventandhowwecanbe
moreinvolved.Thenthesuncomesuponemorning,justlikeanyotherdaybutamajorchangetakesplace.Becauseofourtwenty-firstbirthday,wecannolongerparticipateinthejuniorprogram.Butbecauseofthejuniorprogram,wearearmedtogoforwardintowhateverourchosenfieldmaybe.Proverbs22:6says,“Trainupachildinthewayheshouldgoandwhenheisoldhewillnotdepartfromit.”Thismeansthatthevalues,morals,corebeliefs,andknowledgethatwegainwhenweareyoungwillcarryusforward.ThroughouttheJuniorAngusexperience,wearepreparingforourfutureandthechallengesthatitwillbringtoutilize“ourcollectiveresponsibility”ineverydaylife. JustthinkofthedoctorinNewYorkCityorthelawyerinLosAngeleswhowentthroughtheJuniorAngusprogramexperienceandhowdifferenttheircircleofacquaintanceswouldbefrommostofusintellingabouttheirbeefstoryordefendingtheindustryfrominaccurateaccusationsfrommediaorwelfaregroups.FormerSouthAfricanPresident,NelsonMandela,whoisconsideredtobeoneofthemostinfluentialstatesmenofalltimeisquotedassaying,“Educationisthemostpowerfulweaponwhichyoucanusetochangetheworld.”Howabouttheincredibleinfluenceaschoolteachercouldhaveonaclassroomaftergoingthroughthejuniorprogram;whatarippleeffectmightthatteacherhaveinthespanhisorhercareer. Weareblessedtohavethelargest,mostprogressivebeefbreedassociationintheworldcoupledwiththestrengthofAngusProductionsIncorporated,AngusGeneticsInc.,andCertifiedAngusBeef.Inaddition,wehavetheAmericanAngusAuxiliaryandtheAngusFoundationwhohavemadeavailableincrediblescholarshipstohelpmanyofusprepareforourfuture.Onegetsthefeelingthatwhenyouareinvolvedwith“TeamAngus”youareonlylimitedbyyourdreams.Eachoneoftheseentitiesplaysacriticalpartontheultimatesuccessofthebreed. AlbertEinsteinoncesaid,“Oneshouldneverexpecttotakemorefromlifethantheyarewillingtogive.”Ibelieve
itis“ourcollectiveresponsibility”tomakesurethisincredibleexperiencecancontinueforgenerationstocomeandthattheyarepreparedforthechallengestheywillface.Eachoneofusinthishavebenefitedinsomewayfromthejuniorprogram. IseriouslydoubtwhenthefirstAmericanAngusAssociationjuniormembershipwasissuedin1951,anyonecouldhavepredictedtheinfluencethatdecisionwouldeventuallyhaveacrossournationandevenaroundtheworld.ManyofourlivesheretodaywouldbeverydifferentwithouttheNationalJuniorAngusAssociationandtheprogramsthatsupportit.IamproudtobefromaverysmalltowninsoutheastKansasthatisfullofsaltoftheearthkindofpeoplethatwoulddoanythingtheycouldforsomeone.Iwillhavelifelongfriendsfrommyhometown.However,becauseoftheNationalJuniorAngusAssociation,Ihaveamuchlargercircle.IhavehadtheprivilegetotravelfromCaliforniatoPennsylvaniaandfromWisconsintoGeorgia.Ihavehadtheopportunitytostandinfrontofanaudienceandspeakaboutourindustry.Ihavealsoreceivedsignificantfinancialsupporttofurthermyeducation.AllofthisandmuchmorehavebeenprovidedbymyinvolvementNationalJuniorAngusAssociation.OneofmyfavoritequotesisbyAbrahamLincolnbutitissosimple,isalmostseemschildishis.“Whateveryouare,beagoodone.”Whateverthatmaybeinmycase,IoweahugedebtofgratitudetotheNationalJuniorAngusAssociationtodomypartin“ourcollectiveresponsibility.”

UniversityofKentucky,wherehewasamemberofAlphaGammaRhoFraternity,anagriculturesenator,theagriculturestudentbodypresident,andamemberofthelivestockjudgingteam.Hehasbeeninvolvedinmanycattlemen’sorganizations,andhasservedaspresidentoftheKentuckyAngusAssociationaswellasaco-chairfortheNationalJuniorAngusShow. ScottFostergrewuponafamilyfarminNiles,Mich.,wherehewasactiveinFFA,servingasstatepresident.Heearnedabachelor’sdegreeinanimalhusbandryfromMichiganStateUniversity,whereheparticipatedintheBlockandBridleclubandwastheAgSenaterepresentative.HewasalsoamemberoftheNationalChampionLivestockJudgingteamattheNAILE,wherehewasnamedhighindividualoverall.Upongraduation,FosterworkedforPremierBeefinHowell,Mich.Today,hefarmswithhissonAndrew,brotherBruceandhisparentsatSeldomRestFarmsinsouthwesternMichigan. Philip HowellattendedPurdueUniversityandgraduatedwithadoctorofveterinarymedicinedegreein1973.Aftergraduation,PhilworkedinmixedanimalpracticesinCedarGrove,Wis.,andSilverLake,Ind.HepurchasedapracticeinWinchester,Ind.,inJune1979.PhilandhissonAndyandtheirwivescurrentlymanage50cows,themajoritybeingregisteredAnguswithafewMaine-Anjoufemales.HehasservedaspresidentoftheIndianaJuniorAngusAssociation,IndianaAngusAssociation,andtheSoutheasternIndianaAngusAssociation. Vaughn MeyerandhisfamilymanageSodakAngusRanchinnorthwestSouthDakota.InhisyouthMeyerparticipatedin4-HandFFA.Hereceivedabachelor’sofsciencedegreeinanimalscienceproductionfromSouthDakotaStateUniversity,wherehewasactiveinBlockandBridleandArmyROTC.AfterservingintheArmy,MeyerreturnedtoSodak.HehasbeenactiveintheBlackHillsAngusAssociation,thePerkinsCountyLivestockImprovementAssociation,thePerkinsCountyFarmersUnion,theSouthDakotaBeefIndustryCouncilandtheSouthDakotaStockGrowersAssociation. Don Schiefelbeinhasbeeninvolvedinthecattlebusinessinanumberofwaysthroughouthiscareer.HeattendedcollegeatTexasA&MUniversityinCollegeStation,Texas,wherehegraduatedwithacademichonorswithadegreeinanimalscience.In1990,theNorthAmericanLimousinFoundation(NALF)hiredSchiefelbeintooverseeitsjuniorprogram.LaterhewouldserveasexecutivedirectorfortheAmericanGelbviehAssociation.Schiefelbeinwasabletofulfillhislifelongdreamin2002,returningtohisfamilyAngusfarminKimball,Minn.
