New Enrolments If you are aware of any children who may be interested in enrolling
their child/children at Motupipi School, could you please let us
know.
On July 1 we send to the Ministry of Education our current roll
numbers as well as our predicted roll. It is important that we have
an idea of possible enrolments so that we can accurately plan our future staffing.
With the possible increase class size and decrease in staffing as a result of Budget
announcements this may have quite an impact on our school.

Out of Zone Bus We have been approached by a number of parents about the possibility of a bus
leaving from town (Takaka Primary/GBHS) that links up with all the out of town
buses before and after school. Currently the town bus leaves the depot at 8.10am,
which is before any of the out of town buses arrive and leaves at 3.40pm, which is
too late to link with those buses after school. If you are from out of town and
would possibly be interested in making use of a user pays bus, please contact
Kirsten or Mark before next Friday.

Board of Trustee News
The Board of Trustees met last Thursday 24 May and here are the points of
interest discussed at the meeting:
We reviewed all our ‘Employer Responsibility Policies and Procedures”.
Judy presented a mid year report on students writing on how well our students
are going towards achieving the national standards in writing by the end of the
year.
We discussed changes to our ‘Acceptable Use of Information and Communication
Technology Policy’.
With recent news over the conflict that occurred over the enrolment of a child
with HIV ( Human Immune Deficiency), the Board checked Ministry of Education
Guidelines. HIV is not on the Ministry of Health’s list of infectious or notifiable
diseases, however AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), new cases of
hepatitis C, hepatitis B and meningococcal disease are.
It is recommended that in dealing with any injury, all children should be treated
as if they have a blood-borne virus, as we will not always know whether a child
who is bleeding, is infectious.
Staff as part of their health programme will teach the children what to do if
someone is hurt and /or bleeding in the playground.
Following enquiries from parents who live outside our Ministry of Education paid
bus runs, we are investigating the possibility of a user pays bus run. This bus
would link up with those Ministry paid buses that finish their run at Takaka Pri-
mary or Golden Bay High School and transfer the children to school as well as
linking up with those buses at the end of school.
BOT members will attend a Ministry of Education webinar ( web based training)
on ‘How Boards Work’. The training will cover such things as the roles of
different trustees, use of committees, planning, review and monitoring etc.
Josie presented quotes to put in a drinking fountain at school. Looking at
applying for Pub Charity Grant
Next BOT meeting is 28th June.
Acceptable Use of Information and Communication
Technology Policy Attached is a copy of our Acceptable Use of Information and Communication
Technology Policy. There is also an Internet Safety background information for
Parents sheet, which we have gone over with the children and encourage you to
also to go over with them.
As part of our effort to keep our children safe we are requesting a signed
agreement between children and parents before our children will be able to use
the internet. We ask that you read the agreement over with your child before
signing.
If you have any queries please contact Mark.
T Shirts Just a reminder to please bring in your
clean school T-Shirts. We will need
them to do a stock-take and for Cross
Country.
What a fantastic effort all of our parents and community have made in supporting our school and purchasing books at our book fair. We have sold over $2000 worth of books enabling us to choose over $600 worth of books for our school library.
Way to go Motupipi!!!
Acceptable Use of Information and Communication Technology Policy
Goals To promote and ensure the welfare and safety of children and young people when using the
Intennet.
To prevent students from being exposed to inappropriate material.
Purpose
To provide Internet access, so all staff and students can:
Become effective and safe users of the Internet.
Extend their awareness and knowledge of the Internet
Become motivated users of the Internet
Access knowledge to enhance learning
Internet sites on classroom computers are all bookmarked and are to have been checked by the
classroom teacher. For students to search the internet the teacher must unblock it via password.
Our filter, Watchdog, will still block most inappropriate sites.
Use of the Internet facilities at this school are strictly for puposes appropriate to the school
environment. This includes personal use and professional development of staff.
A teacher must be in the room whenever a student uses the Internet, i.e. a student cannot use the
Internet unsupervised. This also applies to any special use before and after school hours.
Before a child may have access to the internet the child’s family must have read the Motupipi
School Internet Safety Background Information for Parents, signed a Motupipi School Computer
and Internet Use Agreement and the child has undergone training.
Students will need to be directed to assigned sites of the Internet, rather than surfing, which is
why staff members must gain experience using the Internet before letting the students use it.
Students will notify the teacher immediately a site / document is accessed that contains
inappropriate information.
Students will not give anyone on the Internet information about themselves or anyone else – this
includes address, phone number etc.
Parents will be made aware that their children are having access to the Internet and the possible
risks of this. Parents will be expected to share the responsibility of children’s access in terms of
the guidelines in this policy.
The school will from time to time conduct an internal audit of its computer network, internet
facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment /devices. It will include any stored
content, including emails.
Computers purchased for the teaching staff by the school are only to be used by that teacher
outside school hours. Family members / friends are not to have access to these computers.
Only authorized staff / personnel and Motupipi children may have access to the school
computers
Training for staff and students to use these facilities is essential for the safety and
protection of staff, students and equipment.
Children’s Cellphone use at School
Due to the ability of children to have unsupervised access to the internet via personal
cellphones the bringing of cellphones by children to Motupipi school is strongly discouraged.
Cellphones are not to be used by children at school during school hours.
If a parent requires their child to have a cellphone at school for afterschool arrangements
then the cellphone must be turned off and handed into the office by the student when they
arrive at school.
Cellphones can be collected at the end of the day by the child and checked for messages in the
office and then put away in their bags.
The phones are not to be used on the school bus.
Cellphones not handed into the office will be confiscated and parents contacted to collect the
phone.
Due to the school not being able to check the content of music /data on i-Pods
and MP3 players, these devices are not permitted at school. At times a teacher may allow mu-
sic to brought along to school for class use and in those cases parents will be contacted.
March 2012
Internet Safety Background Information for Parents
Dear Parents
Below is a list of rules we will be talking to your children about in order to keep them as internet safe as pos-
sible.
I know I cannot use the school ICT equipment until my parent(s) have signed the use agreement and it
has been returned to school.
All students must have a use agreement signed by their parent.
I can use the school computers and other school ICT equipment for school work and only with my
teacher’s permission unless otherwise directed by a teacher.
It will help to reduce the likelihood of any inappropriate activities taking place, which put the safety of the
learning environment at risk.
If I am unsure whether I am allowed to do something involving ICT, I will ask a teacher first.
This helps children to take responsibility for their own actions, and seek advice when they are unsure of what
to do.
I can only go online or use the internet when a teacher gives permission and an adult is present.
There must be an educational purpose for children being online or accessing the internet. Having an adult
present will help ensure children’s safety.
I understand that I must not, at any time use the internet, mobile phones or any ICT equipment to be
mean, rude, offensive or to bully, harass, or in any way harm anyone else, or the school itself, even if
it is meant as a ‘joke’.
Unfortunately along with many benefits, technology has also provided new ways to carry out anti-social
activities. Bullying and harassment by text message, for example, is becoming a major problem in New
Zealand and in many other countries. Often children become involved in these acts through peer pressure,
without thinking of the consequences.
While at school, I will not:
Attempt to search for things online that I know are not acceptable at our school. This could
include anything that is rude or violent or uses inappropriate language such as swearing.
Use any websites, such as Bebo, Facebook or Twitter.
Make any attempt to get around, or bypass, security monitoring and filtering that is in
place at our school.
If I find anything that upsets me, is mean or rude or things I know are unacceptable at our
school, I will not show others and will turn off the screen and get a teacher straight away.
I understand that I must not download or copy any files without the permission of a teacher.
I will not put contact details online.
This reduces the risk of children being contacted by someone who wishes to upset or harm them, or use
identity for purposes, which might compromise children’s privacy or security online.
I will be careful and look after all our school ICT equipment by not being silly and playing with it,
following our school internet rules and telling a teacher about anything wrong or damaged.
I understand that if I break these rules there will be consequences.
Depending on the breach of the rules, the school may require a parent discussion. Loss of ICT use privileges
for a period of time may also be considered. My family may also be charged for repair costs.
Year 3-6 Student Computer and Internet Agreement
Here are the rules our school has about using computers. Please read them through with your
child along with the Internet Safety Background Information for Parents sheet and then sign the
agreements.
I know I cannot use the school ICT equipment until my parent(s) have signed the use
agreement and it has been returned to school.
I can use the school computers and other school ICT equipment for school work and only
with my teacher’s permission unless otherwise directed by a teacher.
If I am unsure whether I am allowed to do something involving ICT, I will ask a teacher

equipment to be mean, rude, offensive or to bully, harass, or in any way harm anyone
else, or the school itself, even if it is meantas a ‘joke’

Student Agreement (Yr 3-6)
I have read my student computer and internet agreement and I know what the school rules are about
using computers and internet. I know if I break these rules there will be consequences;
I might lose the right to use a school computer
The school will inform my parents
