2012ANNUAL REPORT

CLASS OF 2011

Cristo Rey High School Sacramento is co-sponsored by: The Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community,

The California Province of the Society of Jesus and The California Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur

Mission Cristo Rey High School Sacramento exists to provide a Catholic, college preparatory education to motivated students with limited financial means. All students participate in a unique Work-Study program learning professional work skills and generating income to offset the cost of their education. Our school embodies Mercy, Goodness and Service – transforming lives now and for the future.

CLASS OF 2012

CLASS OF 2010

“To me, perseverance is about letting our light shine. Show how bright you are and lead the way. Persevere to overcome struggles, but help others overcome theirs. Be a voice for the voiceless, and stand with the unsure and the uncertain. Be fearless-do what people are afraid to do. When we are at our limit, don’t give in. Allow God to help us persevere and to go beyond where we are, to go beyond what we are, and to go beyond who we are.” ~ Erik Angeles, Salutatorian Class of 2012

“Our retreats throughout the four years have allowed us to become closer and build trust. Each year, the class bonds became tighter. Although we may be immature at times and disagree on subjects, we always look past those and come together. We learn to forgive each other and work together. On this very important day, we come together to celebrate the accomplishments of the class of 2012 and to the end of a very significant part of our lives. But at the same time, to begin the next important phase of our lives.” ~ Christina Ly, Valedictorian Class of 2012

Dear Cristo Rey High School Community:

I am proud that Cristo Rey High School is a valued partner in the Catholic mission of teaching the gospel to children and young people in the Diocese of Sacramento.

I have seen first-hand what a difference it makes in the lives of the young men and women who share the Cristo Rey campus.

… Young people from high-risk communities are beating the odds and pursuing educational options once considered unattainable for many of them.

I encourage others to join with me in supporting Cristo Rey in whatever way they can: hiring a student team at your work place, volunteer hours, and philanthropic gifts. Most of all, may we abide in prayer for the success of this worthwhile Catholic endeavor.

Respectfully,+Jaime SotoBishop of Sacramento

From the Office of the Bishop:

2012 Salutatorian and Valedictorian: Message from Tom Johnson - Board of Directors, Chair Eight years ago, a few very committed individuals, who formed the first Board of Directors, believed in the potential of our community and potential of the children that could be served by a Cristo Rey School. That board has now grown and built on the efforts and success of our predecessors. The Cristo Rey Board of Directors is committed to building on the success of the past eight years, and most recently, upon the leadership of our former Chair, Terry Street. We are now eighteen members strong with directors from the fields of healthcare, architecture, accounting, insurance, construction, sports and entertainment, consulting, law and education among others.

We are very proud of the fact that 98% of the first three graduating classes were accepted to college. We are also proud of the fact that in a very difficult economic period, a school that partners with local businesses has found a way to succeed. The companies and people who employ our students are the very life of Cristo Rey. We also have a group of connected and committed people who selflessly volunteer hours and hours of their time, trying to find jobs for our students.

The future is a larger facility with all of the attributes of a medium sized high school, and that plan is something that drives the Board of Directors. We have a Facilities Committee that is chaired by Tim Fry, the President of Lionakis, and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors. Tim’s vision and execution are simply invaluable.

As the school year 2012-13 begins with excitement for the students, it also begins with excitement for our Board of Directors. On the horizon we see more jobs, a larger facility, and more of our students in colleges across the country.

Friends of Cristo Rey,

Cristo Rey Sacramento is celebrating its seventh year of educating motivated students of limited financial means to become men and women of faith, purpose and service. We prepare our students to succeed in college and beyond, equipped with the values and skills essential for meaningful work and a fulfilling life.

We are ‘The School that Works’. All students work five days a month in businesses throughout the Sacramento region gaining real-world job experience. Students work with supervisors and mentors who demonstrate the importance of a college education and strong work ethic. One universal quality of

our Cristo Rey students and graduates is the sense of gratitude for these extraordinary opportunities.

Let me share the story of one such opportunity that Ana, Class of 2010, experienced. Ana was hired by Seyfarth Shaw (long-time work-study business partner) after graduation and had this to say: “The Cristo Rey community provided a family for me during a very difficult period in my life. The high standards required of the students by the staff and teachers allowed me to develop to my potential. I appreciate the reverence, care and diligent direction I was given by each faculty member.”**

Our rigorous college preparatory curriculum and dedicated faculty and staff ensure that

every one of our students is prepared to enter and graduate from college - that is our goal. 98% of our three graduating classes were accepted for admission to universities and colleges, many with generous scholarships and grants. We invite you to come visit us and see firsthand why Cristo Rey High School Sacramento is ‘The School that Works’! Prepare to be inspired!

Sincerely,

Sister Eileen Enright, RSMPresident

Alumni NewsAna, Class of 2010Ana came to us as a senior on our work exchange team a few years back and we were thrilled when she agreed to stay on with us after graduation. She is now working as our receptionist and library coordinator while she pursues her general education requirements for a degree in Criminal Justice at Sacramento City College. Because of Ana’s hard work and conscientious approach to her finances, she was able to purchase her first home a few months ago, at the age of nineteen. Still basking in the glow of first time home ownership, Ana’s face lights up whenever we talk about the latest development with her new house. Ana is an inspiring young woman and a valued member of our team here at the Firm. She continues to impress us with her passion and aptitude for learning. My hope is that we can continue to offer an environment which will afford Ana some semblance of the growth and opportunity afforded to her by the Cristo Rey program.

Work-StudyTestimonials“The Work-Study program has given me the ability to work in a team setting with supervisors who become mentors. It has helped me to build skills outside of the school setting that most teenagers don’t always have the chance to achieve. The program has given me the strength to grow and has taught me the value of a healthy work ethic. The work study program has helped me realize my dream of continuing my education to become a pediatric doctor.”

Derrick, Class of 2013

“Our Cristo Rey students are amazing! They have been welcomed by our staff, volunteers and clients, and have been working really hard. Andy was a life saver last Thursday! We had our biggest class ever in the Parent Education program (over 100 people) and he assisted me with the preparations, during and after the class. The class was a complete success thanks to him! Jazlyn and Isidro have been a tremendous help in assisting me with making phone calls (English and Spanish), being in charge of the Boutique and doing office work. Next month they are going to start assisting some of our presenters from different organizations with translating classes to Spanish.”
