In 1916, the Daughters of Charity were asked to manage the DeSoto Sanitorium in downtown Jacksonville. Later renamed St. Vincent’s Medical Center, our hospital has been a beacon of comfort, providing

safe, compassionate medical care to all who come through our doors. What started out as a 42-bed hospital has grown to more than 1,300 patient beds across two campuses, with a third hospital in Clay County opening October 2013. Last year alone, St. Vincent’s has gone above and beyond to provide healthcare to more than 257,000 patients. In fact, you maybe have been one of them.

After nearly a century of care, our community roots run deep. The men and women who first served as our hospital’s advisors in the early 1900s, all the way to our present day leadership, helped St. Vincent’s extend its services and programs to the poor and underserved. As you will read in this annual report, generosity from donors like you help us continue to provide safe patient care through advancements in technology; mobile health outreach that travels to the underserved areas in our community; compassionate care for the unborn through the elderly; and hope-filled care for the very sick.

Technology and research may not be what comes to mind when you think about compassion, but at St. Vincent’s, these words bring hope, health and healing to patients and their loved ones.

As a result of incredible medical breakthroughs and sophisticated technology, many life-threatening diseases and devastating conditions no longer pose the threat they once did. With the help of our community—of our roots—we are able to provide patients with the latest technology that makes surgeries and procedures better, safer and more efficient.

It is my delight to thank so many individuals and groups who share our Mission and Ministry. I recently heard the question asked, “Are you willing to share your time as well as your treasure?” This past year has demonstrated that so many in our surrounding communities, like Susan Towler, Vice President of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida

Foundation, have done both by reaching out through their service organizations and personal and business contacts to help share the need. Thank you for investing your time, energy, and your resources to make life better, and in some cases possible, for so many.

The Foundation Annual Report is full of generosity at work. Of particular note is the way the Rotary District 6970 has embraced a major capital project to provide the Mobile Outreach Ministry with a new mobile van. One of our vans was reaching its end of useful life and was in the repair shop more than on the road. Thanks to the generosity of Rotary District 6970 you will see the blue and yellow

van throughout Duval and other counties. Although there are many programs that are rooted in our Mission of serving all people, especially the poor and vulnerable, one of our most visible is St. Vincent’s Mobile Health Outreach Ministry. As you will see later in this report, it truly changes lives every day.

This year St. Vincent’s HealthCare has collaborated with other area major not-for-profit health care providers, and the District Planning Council of North East Florida to complete a comprehensive community health needs assessment. Some of the assessment work is captured on the www.nefloridacounts.org web site. We are right on track focusing on providing health care, immunizations, and diabetic education in areas of our communities where many are living in poverty. The complete report will be available later in the spring of 2013.

Outreach Ministry

“After serving eight years, I continue to be amazed at the number of children and adults

served through our Outreach Ministry.”

St. Vincent’s Mobile Health Outreach Ministry (MHOM) began in 1991 as a way to address the unmet medical needs in our community by bringing St. Vincent’s physicians and nurses into isolated and underserved neighborhoods in Northeast Florida. This “doctor’s-office-on-wheels” enables our physicians and nurses to administer acute and preventive medical care to those who lack access

to primary care. The generosity of our donors helps us continue to treat those less fortunate, making a critical difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Now, with a fleet of four medical buses, our outreach extends to five counties in North Florida.

“Even though I have worked at St. Vincent’s for 18 years, I am still moved when I see our mission in action,” says Stella Mouzon, Community Outreach Manager of St. Vincent’s Mobile Health Outreach Ministry. “Our physicians and nurses live our mission, making a difference in big and small ways. They have saved lives by detecting the symptoms of diabetes, heart disease and cancer, as well as enabling children to attend school or play team sports because they have administered the necessary physicals and immunizations. Also, because St. Vincent’s outreach program is at no cost to the patient, our Mobile Health team is often times the only consistent healthcare these individuals receive.”

Shircliff Society

The St. Vincent’s Shircliff Society, launched in 2011, is a young professionals group that inspires young leaders to improve the health of individuals and communities through philanthropy and volunteerism.

“We have made real gains in attracting the best and brightest in our first year and look forward to welcoming other young, quality leaders for St. Vincent’s,” says John Roberts, President of the St. Vincent’s Shircliff Society.

In addition to volunteering and generously supporting St. Vincent’s, members of The Shircliff Society have the opportunity to meet and develop their professional skills by networking with top business and philanthropic community leaders. Building Philanthropy with St. Vincent’s Shircliff Society

Brighter Beginnings

Brighter Beginnings is a program designed and offered by St. Vincent’s with the goal to reduce infant mortality by providing educational programs on healthy pregnancy, healthy births, infant safety and the lifelong benefits of breastfeeding to pregnant women and new mothers in Jacksonville. The Program reaches out to young women in areas where access to information and care may be limited. Monthly classes especially designed for expecting

women or new mothers are offered, particularly to those living in poor neighborhoods such as the New Town Success Zone.

Funded by St. Vincent’s Foundation and generouspartners, like the Chartrand Foundation, Brighter Beginnings is an extension of the services offered at the Seton Center for Women & Infants Health. The program provides education and support to the women who need it the most. Women are eager to benefit from education on

basic nutrition, healthy choices, newborn care and safety practices. In fact, all 132 women who have fully participated in Brighter Beginnings this year have safely delivered healthy full-term babies and more than half have breast fed their little ones. This program has made a difference in their lives and the lives of their infants. This program also responds to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Call To Action to better inform young women of the benefits of providing breast milk to their babies.

The program partners with other community organizations including Edward Waters College and Family Support Services. Brighter Beginnings serves as one more example of philanthropy responding to a demonstrated need in our Jacksonville community.

Faith Community Nursing serves as a bridge between St. Vincent’s HealthCare, community resources, and local church congregations to promote health and well being in the community.

The St. Vincent’s community nurse and the congregation identify the services needed for their particular members. St. Vincent’s HealthCare provides education, consultation, and peer support to the volunteer nurses who tithe their time and talents within their own church. The spiritual dimension is central to the practice

of community nursing. In all activities, the parish nurse seeks to promote an understanding of the connection between faith, lifestyles, attitudes, relationships, and well being.

The Faith Community Nurses coordinate health screenings, educational programs, and the development of support groups. They also assist with the coordination of volunteers within the church to help parishioners with their health needs and may visit members at home, in nursing homes, or during hospitalization. St. Vincent’s Faith Community Nurses provide a prayerful presence and comfort in times of need.

“The TAVR procedure is the biggest advancement in cardiovascular

disease since the stent.”

On average, St. Vincent’s Riverside and Southside campuses perform more than 56,000 cardiovascular procedures a year—everything from stress tests to open heart surgeries. St. Vincent’s Riverside can now add another cardiac procedure that makes St. Vincent’s first again in our region. In 2011, St. Vincent’s was selected by Edwards Lifesciences (the global leader in the innovative science and cutting-edge technology for heart valves and heart disease) as the first hospital in the region to offer patients Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

“St. Vincent’s has always been considered a national leader in the field of cardiology. Edwards Lifesciences has carefully hand selected cardiovascular programs across the country that have a highly skilled multidisciplinary team and a history of providing high quality and innovative care to patients,” said CEO Moody Chisholm. “We are excited to bring this technology to the citizens of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.”

TAVR was developed for patients with severe aortic valve stenosis or severe narrowing of aortic valves. Symptoms include progressive shortness of breath, fainting spells, chest pain and congestive heart failure. These symptoms significantly

increase a patient’s mortality rate if the aortic valve is not replaced. Previously, patients needed open heart surgery to replace the diseased valve, but TAVR enables a cardiologist to deploy the Edwards SAPIEN valve through the femoral artery in the thigh, preventing invasive surgery.

The TAVR procedure requires a multidisciplinary approach in a special operating room called a Hybrid O-R. St. Vincent’s Riverside finished construction on its new 860 sq. ft. Hybrid O-R this summer. An average operating room is 400 sq. ft. but the Hybrid O-R is more than double the size to accommodate the larger team and special equipment needed for the procedure. Cardiothoracic surgeons and Interventionalists rarely have the opportunity to work so closely together…but for these cases a team approach becomes necessary.

“Patients who are otherwise deemed inoperable now have a second lease on life because of TAVR,” says St. Vincent’s interventional cardiologist Samer Garas, M.D., one of the four doctors trained to perform TAVR. “If a patient qualifies for TAVR, their hospital stay is only 2–5 days and the patient can return to normal activities in 5–7 days. This new procedure is safer, minimally invasive, improves patient outcomes, increases longevity and enhances their quality of life while also reducing the burden of expensive, long-term medical care and medications. The TAVR procedure is the biggest advancement in cardiovascular disease since the stent.”

St. Vincent’s Foundation was able to provide financial support for this exceptional program thanks to long term support from the Jacksonville community.

Committed to providing the highest quality care possible, we offer a complete patient-centered experience focused on holistic healing of the body, mind and spirit. This holistic approach includes using innovative technology and techniques that not only ensure current patients receive excellent care, but that future patients will benefit from their experiences. “As we age, mobility is the single most important factor for good health, as it strengthens our muscles, heart and lungs,” says R. David Heekin, M.D.

One of the ways that Heekin Orthopedic Institute is ensuring a brighter future for orthopedic patients is by maintaining a total joint registry. This registry currently has| data on 8,700 total joints and allows Heekin Orthopedic Institute to track the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients who undergo hip and knee replacements and document post operative outcomes. Heekin researchers can then examine the relationship between processes of care, hospital and surgeon associated outcomes, ensuring that they are always maintaining an excellent patient experience before, during and after surgery.

St. Vincent’s Foundation works with St. Vincent’s surgeons and our medical team of professionals to fund research as well as new construction and renovations at our hospitals. Our goal is to provide the best patient experience at all times.

The St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Institute comprises seven neurosurgeons and six neurologists, specializing in the treatment of brain tumors, deep brain stimulation (DBS), epilepsy, strokes, and other spine and brain disorders.

Because many spine and brain conditions require both medical and surgical treatment, our Neurology and Neurosurgery divisions are equipped with only the best, state-of-the-art technology and the most talented group of physicians and staff. “The group is known for providing the highest quality of care to patients with neurological disorders all over Northeast Florida,” says former patient Anne Barcelo.

Now, thanks to a collaboration with Duke University, the St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Institute is expanding its offerings with a clinical trial to treat glioblastomas, tumors among the most prevalent and lethal forms of brain cancer. This remarkable trial will use vaccinations, immunotherapy, for brain tumor treatment.

In non-medical terminology, cells are extracted through surgery and are then trained to recognize the cancer as an invader and attack it. Combined with the traditional method of treating cancer, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, it has had amazing results and may one day be a break-through treatment for this lethal disease.

Currently, in order to participate in the trial study, patients must travel to Duke University every 28 days. Being away from their homes and families can be a difficult financial and emotional burden for those receiving treatment. St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Institute is seeking to lighten that burden for patients in the Northeast Florida region and beyond, by offering this groundbreaking clinical trial right here in Jacksonville at St. Vincent’s. Through the clinical trial program, St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Institute will collaborate with existing cancer research programs nationwide to implement local programs such as those at Duke University and Cleveland Clinic. This robust program, lead by the highly qualifiedstaff at St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Institute,will allow residents throughout Florida accessto cutting-edge trials and state-of-the-arttreatments closer to home.

St. Vincent’s Foundation is working with the surgeons, physicians and staff of St. Vincent’s Spine & Brain Institute to become the brain cancer hub of the Southeast.

The construction of St. Vincent’s Clay County is well underway and we recently celebrated this progress with a Topping Out Party. The term “topping out” comes from iron workers and indicates the final piece of steel or concrete being hoisted onto the top of a building. This ceremony signifies the completion of the first phase of construction of the new hospital. We celebrated this milestone with hundreds of community leaders, friends and donors from Clay, Duval and surrounding counties.

St. Vincent’s is excited that our compassionate, holistic and faith based healing will be available in Clay County within a few months. Because of the generosity of our donors and the Clay County community, when the doors open in October 2013, St. Vincent’s Clay County will truly be the hospital that the community built.

INVESTED NAMED FUNDS WITH BALANCES AS OF FISCAL YEAR JUNE 30, 2012

MARY LOU DAVIS ENDOWMENT FOR ST. VINCENT’S WOMEN’S HEART INITIATIVE $705,662 Earnings from this endowment are used for the Women’s Heart Initiative as part of the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside Cardiovascular Program. Funds are used to provide diagnostic screenings, cardiac education and support awareness events focusing on fighting heart disease.

ELOISE AND BILL GAY, SR. DESIGNATED FUND FOR CARDIAC EDUCATION $111,730 Earnings from this fund are used to provide cardiac care education to clinical staff. Funds are specifically used to provide training using best-practices and to perform clinical trials in the area of cardiac care.

EULA GIVENS ENDOWMENT $16,387 This annual endowment award recognizes an associate of St. Catherine Labouré Manor who practices the core value of dedication when caring for patients. The associate goes above and beyond a patient’s expectations, displaying a compassionate and nurturing manner and an untiring commitment to the mission of St. Vincent’s.

PETER AND MAXINE KROLL ENDOWED CHAIR FOR WELLNESS EDUCATION $71,922 Earnings from this fund support wellness education and overall health awareness in the Jacksonville community. Funds are specifically used for educating the community about various health and wellness issues, including breast cancer and obesity.

MR. AND MRS. EDWARD W. LANE, JR. NURSERY ENDOWMENT $147,232 Earnings from this endowment are used to provide on-going support to underprivileged mothers and their infants. This endowment provides women with new car seats for their infants, as well as clothes, blankets and basic necessities to care for their babies upon discharge from St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside.

JOHN AND EDNA LENNON ENDOWMENT $443,218 Earnings from this endowment are used to benefit sick, elderly and infirm patients at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside and St. Catherine Labouré Manor.

BETSY LOVETT FUND FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SURGERY AND MEDICINE $226,553 Earnings from this fund are put toward research, technology, education and training for surgeons and operating room staff at St. Vincent’s Medical Center Riverside. During 2011–2012, funds were specifically used for a study regarding blood loss and total knee arthroplasty. This study supports better and safer patient care.
