BOSTONBOSTON

COLLEGECOLLEGE

Boston College lacrosse will enter the 2012 sea-son, its seventh in the ACC, led by an impressive group of veterans charged with laying the foun-dation for one of the strongest incoming classes in program history. The 2012 team returns all but four starters from last season, but with the ad-dition of one sophomore transfer and five fresh-men – deemed the No. 6 recruiting class in the nation –BC is poised for even greater success in the year to come.

“We are in the best place BC lacrosse has been in heading into a season,” head coach Bowen Holden said. “We have a clear idea of what to work on and what we are capable of. We are all very excited about the spring, and the teams we will face will be the right mix of challenges as we look to achieve our ultimate goal.”

Attack

Junior Brook Blue, sophomore Moira Barry and freshman Covie Stanwick have worked hard in the offseason to create strong connections and a fluid, team-oriented attack that they will use to lead the Eagles’ offense in 2012.

“Brook plays with great intensity and fire,” Holden explained. “At the same time, it is great to see Covie come in as a freshman and step into her role with such confidence and poise. Lastly, Moira is a combination of the two, mixing strength, fire and poise. They have all found a way to work ex-tremely well together.”

Adding depth to this position will be senior Ginny Gummersall, who provides height, speed and talent off the ball. Sophomore Kelly McNelis is also expect-ed to continue to earn minutes this season thanks to good stick work and a strong shot.

Midfield

Kristin Igoe, returning as a graduate student, will be the backbone of the Eagles’ midfield this sea-son, serving as a strong influence on both sides of the ball.

In addition to Igoe, the 2012 Eagles’ roster will boast several options in the midfield.

“For the first time in my seven years at BC, we have significant depth in the midfield, to the point where we have trouble deciding who to put on the field,” Holden commented. “We have six or seven solid options. Middies have to be great defenders, and to be great defenders, they must have great energy for 60 minutes, so this depth allows us to maintain a defensive, high-pressure mindset.”

Some options in the midfield for BC include senior Brittany Wilton, an All-American attacker in 2011, who was converted to midfield for 2012.

“Brittany has embraced the new role to become one of the team’s top midfielders,” Holden said.

Seniors Sam Taylor and Katherine Caufield add a strong, confident combination of offense and de-fense to the midfield, while freshman Mikaela Rix will be an important addition to the BC roster in 2012.

“The experience Sam and Katherine bring to the field is immense and they will certainly play criti-cal roles this spring,” Holden said. “Mikaela has been an amazing addition because even though she is just a freshman, she plays with the confi-dence and talent of a junior or senior.”

Junior Caroline Martignetti, who also made the move from attack this offseason, is another strong option in the midfield, especially with her tenacious ability between restraining lines. Soph-

omore Cali Ceglarski is striving to see some min-utes as she works her way back from injury, while freshmen Rachel Igoe and Stephanie Sabatini provide even more depth and are working hard with the hopes of seeing playing time.

After working hard to return from injury, sopho-more transfer Meghan Conley and sophomore Carly Weilminster look to earn their way onto the field this spring. Sophomore walk-on and BC soc-cer player, Kate McCarthy, will also look to add to the Eagles’ efforts in the midfield.

Defense

Junior Jessie Coffield and sophomore Claire Blohm will anchor the defense in 2012. Holden is looking to rely upon Coffield for the aggressive spark she adds to the back line, in addition to Blohm’s size and power.

“I’m thrilled with Claire’s improvement,” Holden said. “She came in last year as a walk-on and saw some minutes, but we took her because we saw potential. She has done everything any coach has asked without questions. Claire gives everything a try and is willing to make mistakes in order to learn, and that has helped her make incredible strides in the offseason.”

Senior Elizabeth Donovan and junior Ali Meagher will be a solid combination for providing the calm-ness and experience needed on defense. Dono-van has seen significant time since she was a freshman so she also adds an air of confidence to the back line.

Sophomore Kara O’Connell is expected to see some minutes in 2012 after making significant strides this fall and freshman walk-on Lauren Bron-son will add depth. Senior Kate Collins also hopes to return to action after battling injuries last fall.

Goalkeeper

Senior Catherine Conway is scheduled to be the team’s starting goalkeeper heading into the spring.

“Catherine has stepped up this fall, showing a real confidence,” Holden explained. “She has been around the team and has experience with the way we play the game. She is one of the best athletes on the team and that transfers into the cage. Cath-erine could easily become one of the top goalkeep-ers in the country if she sets her mind to it.”

Another option for the Eagles this year will be freshman Emily Mata, whose strong performance in preseason practices has created some compe-tition at the goalkeeper position.

“Emily is doing well to exceed expectations. We knew she was good coming in, but she plays with such patience and poise, something you wouldn’t expect out of a freshman goalkeeper,” Holden said.

Schedule

The Eagles’ 2012 schedule includes seven matchups against opponents who were ranked in the nation’s top 20 at the end of last season: No. 2 Maryland, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Duke, No. 8 Albany, No. 14 Virginia, No. 17 Syracuse and No. 20 Harvard.

“Each year, our strength of schedule improves and 2012 is no different,” Holden said. “I am re-ally looking forward to seeing our team compete against the best in the country, and we are very confident about this team’s ability.”

Boston College will begin the season with a two-game road swing at Holy Cross (Feb. 17) and Syracuse (Feb. 21) before returning to the Heights for the home opener against Hofstra on Saturday, Feb. 25.

The Eagles will host Virginia Tech in the squad’s first ACC matchup of the season on Saturday, March 10. BC will also play home against confer-ence rival North Carolina in 2012, but will travel to Maryland, Virginia and Duke.

Postseason

Last year the Eagles advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament and earned a bid into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program histo-ry. In 2012, the Eagles strive to go even further and make their second consecutive NCAA appearance.

“Every year, the goal is for the senior class to leave BC in a better place than they found it in,” Holden said. “This senior class has already achieved that, but there is a thirst for much more. Our mission is kept within our team, but I can confidently say the 2012 team has big plans. We will take it one step at a time, one game at a time, and in the end we hope to be where no BC team has been before.”

2011 REVIEWEntering the 2011 season, the Eagles focused on trying to top the team’s record-setting performance from the previous year. BC lived up to those high expectations, turning in yet another milestone year in the history of the Boston College program.

The Eagles got off to a strong start with a six-game win streak, tying a program best set in 2010. BC earned its first ACC win of the season against then-ranked No. 7 Virginia, 12-6. The win marked the Eagles’ first victory against the Cavaliers since BC joined the ACC in 2005.

The Eagles entered the 2011 ACC Tournament seeded fourth, tying the program’s highest seed ever in the tournament. BC went on to win its first-round game against fifth-seeded Virginia Tech. Bos-ton College defeated the Hokies by an ACC tour-nament record 14 points (17-3), advancing for the first time to the semifinal round of the tournament, where the team faced No. 1 Maryland. The 8-5 loss to the Terrapins marked the second closest game for Maryland up to that point, and was the second lowest goal output for the Terps, as well.

The highlights continued for the Eagles on May 8, as BC received its first-ever NCAA bid, earning the right to play at No. 2 Northwestern. Falling by three to the eventual national champion Wildcats, 11-8, the Eagles forced the closest first-round game NU had played in the last seven years.

BC was ranked in the nation’s top 20 for the vast majority of the season, reaching its highest Division I ranking ever at No. 9 for the week of April 25, end-ing the 2011 season ranked 13th.

Amongst all the team highlights, many individuals racked up their own accolades. For the week end-ing April 4, sophomore Jessie Coffield was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore Brooke Blue was named Inside Lacrosse Player of the Week. Freshman Moira Barry was also named womenslax.com Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 7.

Senior midfielder Kristin Igoe became the first Eagle ever named to the IWLCA All-America First Team. She was also named to the Tewaaraton watch list, in addition to the All-ACC Team, marking her third consecutive selection. Her selection to the ACC All-Tournament Team was the first ever for the program. Junior Brittany Wilton joined Igoe on the All-ACC Team, tying the most All-ACC selections in the program’s history. Igoe, Wilton and senior tri-captain Jillian Rekart were named to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team, while Blue earned second team honors.

Bowen Holden enters her seventh year as the Eagles’ head coach. The 2011 season was filled with many highlights and accomplishments for the Boston College squad. The team finished 12-7, tying the program record for most wins in a season set the previous year. BC started the season off strong with a six-game win streak, which tied another program best. The Eagles earned decisive victories over two nationally ranked opponents in 2011. Boston College routed No. 7 Virginia, 12-6, and defeated No. 20 Hofstra, 14-9. The win over Virginia was the first in ACC program history. The squad advanced to the ACC Tournament Semifinals and earned its first NCAA Tour-nament bid in program history. Holden also led the 2011 BC squad to its highest Divi-sion I national ranking ever, as the team moved to No. 9 during the week of April 26.

Other than team highlights, 2011 also saw many individual accomplishments under Holden’s leadership. Two Eagles were named IWLCA All-Americans, marking the first time in program history two team members were selected in the same year. Kristin Igoe was the first Eagle ever to be awarded first-team accolades, while Brit-tany Wilton earned Third Team honors. Igoe and Wilton were also named to the All-ACC Team and Igoe was selected for the ACC All-Tournament Team. Seven Eagles earned All-ACC Academic Team honors, four earned IWLCA All-Northeast Region, and two were named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. BC was selected as an IWLCA Academic Squad for the sixth time in as many years.

The 2010 season was a milestone year for Holden, as the Eagles went 12-6, the best record in program history to date. They set the record for most wins (12), as well as the record for the longest win streak (6) to open the season. The 2010 squad also earned the program’s first-ever national ranking, climbing as high as 17th in the country. Holden’s squad finished the season with a +70 in overall goal differential. Several games marked highlights for the team, including an ACC conference win against Virginia Tech, in addition to Holden’s first career win and the Eagles’ first road victory over crosstown rival Boston University. Lauren Costello had her best season yet with four broken records and a second-place ranking on the all-time single sea-son assists list (35). She was also named to the IWLCA All-American Second Team. Four players earned IWLCA All-Region Honors, five were named to the All-ACC Aca-demic Team, two were named to the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll, and the IWLCA named BC an Academic Squad.

The 2009 season was also one of the best in school history, especially since enter-ing the ACC in 2005. Completing its first regular winning season with a 9-8 record (9-9 overall), the Eagles made great strides. Five of the team’s opponents were ranked in the top 10-15 in the country throughout the entire season. Four individuals were honored as IWLCA Regional All-Americans, two made the All-ACC team, four were named to the All-ACC Academic Team, two were honored as IWLCA Academic Honor Roll members, and the entire team was an IWLCA Academic Honor Squad.

In Holden’s third year, the Eagles captured their first top-10 win in program history by beating then No. 7 North Carolina in double overtime. This launched BC into the No. 4 spot in the ACC at the end of the regular season and earned BC its first-ever fourth seed in the ACC tournament. Overall, the 2008 team ended the season with a 7-10 record with several individual accolades earned along the way.

In 2007, BC compiled a 6-11 record, 1-4 in the competitive ACC. Four of the team’s five ACC opponents were nationally ranked in the top six. The Eagles made the IWLCA Honor Roll for the second year in a row, placing third on the Division I Honor Squads list with a 3.028 cumulative GPA. Three players received IWLCA Academic Honor Roll accolades and were named to the All-ACC Academic Team.

The Eagles ended their 2006 inaugural season in the ACC 8-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Six of BC’s opponents were ranked in the top 13 in the country. Holden’s team was honored as one of 42 teams on the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll. Two of Holden’s student-athletes received individual IWLCA academic honors, and one earned IWLCA Regional All-American status for accomplishments on the field.

ACACIA WALKER

• ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH• SECOND SEASON AT BC

JEN KENT

Acacia Walker enters her second season as associate head coach for Boston College. In her role, Walker serves as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator and plays a key role in recruiting, as well as in many other facets of the daily opera-tions of the BC program.

Walker continues to be an active player at the elite level, as she was recently named to the 2011-12 U.S. Women’s Senior National Lacrosse Team. Prior to this year’s selection, Walker had been involved with the U.S. Women’s National Team for the past nine years. She won a gold medal with the 2009 World Cup Team in Prague, Czech Republic, and was also a member of the 2010-11 U.S. National Team that was undefeated on American soil.

Prior to working with the Eagles, Walker was the associate head coach at the University of Massachusetts. During her tenure, Walker acted as the offensive coordinator, handled recruiting responsibilities and helped lead the team to two consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. She also handled travel, budget management, video breakdown and camps.

From 2005-08, she was an assistant coach at Northwestern, where the Wildcats won three consecutive NCAA National Championships and three consecutive ALC Conference Championships.

Walker graduated from Maryland in 2005 with a degree in American Studies. She played for the Terrapins and captained the team in her senior year. She was an IWLCA All-American as well as an All-ACC selection. In 2005, she won the University of Maryland M Club ‘James H. Kehoe’ Award, and in 2004 and 2005 was a Tewaaraton Candidate, the award given to the male and female Collegiate National Player of the Year.

At age 15, Walker was the youngest member of the World Championship Un-der-19 Team that won gold in Perth, Australia, in 1999.

Walker hails from Annapolis, Md., and currently resides in Boston, Mass.

Kent is in her fourth year as an assistant coach for the Eagles. She focuses her attention on the defensive end, but she plays a crucial role in individual development, as well.

In 2011, the Eagles had a milestone year, earning their first NCAA berth in program history, and the defensive end was a large part of that success. Goal-tender Sheila Serafino was second in the ACC with 133 save and finished fourth in saves-per-game with a 7.00 average. As a whole, the defense only allowed 177 goals compared to BC’s 232.

A native of Norwell, Mass., and a graduate of Thayer Academy where she was inducted into the Thayer Academy Sports Hall of Fame, Kent was a four-year letterwinner at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She played soccer, basket-ball and lacrosse. In lacrosse, she was a two-year captain, MVP and leading scorer, as well as a Brine/IWLCA Second-Team All-American her senior season in 1990.

Upon graduation from Colby, Kent joined the staff at the Hyde School in Bath, Maine, where she taught and coached lacrosse and soccer, eventually becom-ing the Dean of Students and Athletic Director. Her accolades at Hyde include the 1995 Maine State Champions in lacrosse.

After leaving Hyde, Kent became the varsity lacrosse coach at Norwell High School in 1998 where she won back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006 and was named Massachusetts Coach of the Year in 2005. In addition to her coach-ing duties at Norwell, Kent was also the Co-director of Norwell Youth Lacrosse and the Co-director and owner of Xtreme Lacrosse and Soccer camps.

Kent has significant ties to Boston College, as her four siblings are alumni of BC; Michelle Lally O’Grady `89, Rob Lally `90, Doug Lally `91, and Greg Lally ‘96.

Kent currently lives in Norwell with her husband Jeff, and their six children: Alicia, Callahan, Kenzie, Parker, Addison, and Bailey.

“Community service is part of our team’s backbone. We, as a group, truly take the saying ‘men and women for others’ to heart. Be it at the Franciscan Children’s Hospital or with our adopted Friends of Jaclyn teammate Jude and her family, it really drives home how lucky we are. We get to play the sport we love while attending a great school, which is something we can’t and shouldn’t take for granted.” – Catherine Conway

“I am proud to be part of an active group of student-athletes who are always looking to help out in the community, no mat-ter what work is needed.” – Moira Barry

“Giving back to the community is one of the best parts about BC Athletics. The community service projects that we partici-pate in help us maintain perspective and stay grateful for our opportunities at BC.” – Ali Meagher

“It feels so great to be a part of the team that works so hard on the field and around campus, volunteering for things like the Red Bandanna Run and Light the Night. I cannot wait to spend the next four years here.” – Emily Mata

“I’ll always remember the volunteer service I have done with the BC lacrosse team. It is amazing what we can do when we all come together for a common cause.” – Claire Blohm

COLLEGECOLLEGENEWTON CAMPUS SOCCER/LACROSSE COMPLEX

Nestled behind the law school on Boston College’s Newton Campus is one of nation’s elite soccer/lacrosse facilities.

Completely updated in 2008, the Newton Campus Soccer/Lacrosse Complex features a newly installed Polytan artificial playing surface.

Polytan surfaces are used at the World Cup Stadium in Stuttgart, Germany, the Olympic Sta-dium in Munich, and on many fields both at the collegiate level and internationally.

With the addition of the Polytan artificial playing surface, coupled with offseason updates that include permanent team benches canopied to guard against the elements and a 30-seat, enclosed press box complete with a roof-deck video-filming area, Boston College is proud to boast a brand new state-of-the-art facility.

The artificial playing surface made its regular-season debut on Aug. 29, 2008 against Boston University.

Overall, the field is entering its 12th year in existence. It spent the first eight seasons as a natural grass pitch before switching to the artificial turf. Lights were added to the field prior to the 2003 campaign.

With its close proximity to the freshmen dorms, the “Superfans,” BC’s collective student fan base, frequent games to provide a boisterous and exciting atmosphere. Decked in bright gold t-shirts, Superfans, friends and family alike sit near the action, and the close tree line provides an intimate atmosphere for soccer and lacrosse matches.

COLLEGECOLLEGEATHLETICS DIRECTOR

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athletics in Septem-ber of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprec-edented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most significant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College student-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the University and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country for the second consecutive year. In ad-dition, BC football – with a score of 90 – was one of only six FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) programs in the country to receive a score of 90 or better.

In May, Boston College’s varsity sports teams scored big when the NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate report. The average APR score of the 28 BC teams that were counted was 989 - 19 points above the national average (970). Every BC team scored 960 or above, and six teams - men’s fencing, men’s golf, men’s skiing, women’s lacrosse, women’s skiing and women’s tennis - scored a perfect 1,000. Boston College’s football team scored a 971 - a full 25 points above the national average. The men’s basketball team scored a 972 - 27 points above the national average.

“Boston College is, above all, an academic institution,” De-Filippo said. “We want to field competitive sports teams, and we want to win, which our teams do. But when we recruit stu-dent-athletes, we tell them they have an opportunity to receive a degree from one of the greatest universities in the country, and our mission is to ensure that they are successful. We are extremely proud of our student-athletes’ accomplishments in the classroom.”

Last year, 349 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consistently ranked in the nation’s top ten. NCSA

Athletic Recruiting ranked Boston College 13th among NCAA Division I universities in its annual power rankings, which as-sess the combined academic and athletics standards of all NCAA athletic programs across the country.

DeFilippo has undertaken an impressive overhaul of BC’s ath-letics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a to-tal renovation of Conte Forum, including a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse stadiums on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Stadium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months.

DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the pri-vately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learn-ing Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general University use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renovation Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contrib-uted nearly $20 million during the past year including more than 40 commitments of $100,000 or more in support of intercolle-giate athletics. During the Light the World Campaign, DeFilippo has led an athletics fundraising effort that has totaled more than $150 million.

Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their commitment to Bos-ton College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a fe-male student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need.

In athletics competition, DeFilippo has overseen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2010-11 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 12th consecutive bowl game, the women’s soc-cer team advanced to its first Final Four and the women’s ice

hockey team advanced to the Frozen Four. In 2010, the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed.

From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Vil-lanova University. He served as Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Services at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84.

His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive co-ordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference champi-onships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant foot-ball coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl.

A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974.

He was recently named the 2010 recipient of the New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) Martin Williams Soud-ers Award, presented annually to a graduate of a New England independent school who made a distinguished record in sports and who since made a distinguished record in life through his/her ideals, leaderships and accomplishments. Past recipients have included George H.W. Bush, Sargent Shriver, Michael Er-izione, Dee Rowe, Bill Cleary, and former BC Athletics Director Bill Flynn.

DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (married to Matt Eldred), John and Mary and recently welcomed their first grandchild, Katherine Eldred.
