CongregationalLibrary & Archives History Matters

Now, more than ever, history matters at the Congregational Library.

It matters to the graduate student who unearthed a surprising story of African- Americans in colonial Boston from our collection of church records. Supported by a Con-gregational Library/Athenaeum

Fellowship award, he brought to light people long overlooked by other scholars but an integral part of the Congregational Way in its early years. This past year he shared our reading room space with many other research-ers and scholars—an all-time high for the Library—as word of our unique collection continues to spread.History brought in over forty people to hear Harvard professor David Hall talk about his new book, A Reforming People around a crowded lunch table. It matters to the many others who have visited our website to watch interviews with Professor Hall and the other authors who participated in our History Matters Brown Bag Lunch series, from young scholars like Adrian Weimer, an Assistant Professor at Providence College, to Francis Bremer, one of the nation’s leading interpreters of New England Puritanism.

History matters to the Greek high school students I met last October. Their school, the American College of Greece, was established by Congrega-tional women missionaries over a century ago, a story all but lost in the disruption of war and forced migra-tions. What a privilege to spend time with them and tell them about the extraordinary people who made their education possible. The past is a source of vitality and purpose for the local congregations participating in our March church anniversary workshop. As they make plans to celebrate their history with “wisdom and style.” They are building a deeper understanding of their unique Congregational heritage as well as a solid path to the future.History matters to all the many friends and supporters of the Congregational Library, both new and long-term. We are deeply appreciative of your partnership in our unique and impor-tant mission, bringing the priceless resources of the past to the challenges of the present and the future.
