ALL-AREA FOOTBALL TEAM COACH OF THE YEAR LENNY JANKOWSKI By Laurel Pfahler [email protected] 772-978-2282 VERO BEACH — Vero Beach foot- ball coach Lenny Jankowski wasn’t sure what to expect from his offense this season. With all new skill players and the loss of two assistants from his staff, the second-year head coach figured he was in for a challenge. But the Fighting Indians didn’t look like a team rebuilding. Not even at one point early on when there wasn’t a single offensive starter from last year on the field. Vero Beach went on to rack up 31.3 points and an area-best 360.8 yards per game, while the defense that underperformed last year stepped up to hold op- ponents under 12 points a game. By the end of it, Jankowski had guided the Indians to their first district title — and playoff win — since 2008. As a result he is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers’ All- Area Football Coach of the Year. “I was very pleased with the season,” Jankowski said. “I lost those mainstay coaches on the offensive side of the ball and had a whole new skill group, so I didn’t have big predictions with this offensive group. So much was unknown, but the players responded. ... It was a fun chal- lenge. It was always a work in progress, but we continued to get better each week, and with the defense playing as well as it was and special teams doing well, all that worked together to put together a pretty good season.” While Jankowski’s offense as led by 2,500-yard passer Dalton Stokes and a crew of talented receivers, he said it was the de- fense that made the biggest dif- ference. An undersized defensive line outperformed expectations, the linebackers made plays at the line of scrimmage that previ- ously would have happened eight yards down field and a star- studded secondary lived up to its hype to shut down even the best receivers. “They were the most consis- tent on a regular basis,” Jankows- ki said of his defense. “We had eight senior starters, and when you get that senior leadership, it’s a good thing.” Though Jankowski and the In- dians were hoping for a deeper run in the playoffs, he called their District 8-8A title and re- gional quarterfinal win against Palm Harbor University a “step in the right direction.” Jankowski credited the “all-in” mentality of his players who “un- selfishly worked toward the ulti- mate goal of doing the best they could as a team.” The players bought into their “all-in” team motto to improve on a district runner-up, regional quarterfinal finish from last year. “That’s always been the thing I’ve tried to hang my hat on as a coach, is being able to connect with players, and we had that unity with the players and the coaches,” Jankowski said. “We decided back in the spring it was the approach we wanted to take. We knew we needed to get bet- ter each week and I think we did that to where we were playing our best football at the end of the season.” ‘All-in’ approach helps Vero Beach to successful season DEBORAH SILVER/TREASURE COAST NEWSPAPERS Lenny Jankowski is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers’ 2012 All-Area Football Coach of the Year. COACH OF THE YEAR LENNY JANKOWSKI

By Laurel [email protected] 772-978-2282

VERO BEACH — Vero Beach foot-ball coach Lenny Jankowski wasn’t sure what to expect from his offense this season.

With all new skill players and the loss of two assistants from his staff, the second-year head coach figured he was in for a challenge.

But the Fighting Indians didn’t look like a team rebuilding. Not even at one point early on when there wasn’t a single offensive starter from last year on the field.

Vero Beach went on to rack up 31.3 points and an area-best 360.8 yards per game, while the defense that underperformed last year stepped up to hold op-ponents under 12 points a game. By the end of it, Jankowski had guided the Indians to their first district title — and playoff win — since 2008.

As a result he is the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers’ All-Area Football Coach of the Year.

“I was very pleased with the season,” Jankowski said. “I lost those mainstay coaches on the offensive side of the ball and had a whole new skill group, so I didn’t have big predictions with this offensive group. So much was unknown, but the players responded. ... It was a fun chal-lenge. It was always a work in progress, but we continued to get better each week, and with the defense playing as well as it was and special teams doing well, all that worked together to put together a pretty good season.”

While Jankowski’s offense as led by 2,500-yard passer Dalton Stokes and a crew of talented receivers, he said it was the de-fense that made the biggest dif-ference.

An undersized defensive line outperformed expectations, the linebackers made plays at the line of scrimmage that previ-ously would have happened eight yards down field and a star-studded secondary lived up to its hype to shut down even the best receivers.

“They were the most consis-tent on a regular basis,” Jankows-ki said of his defense. “We had eight senior starters, and when you get that senior leadership, it’s a good thing.”

Though Jankowski and the In-dians were hoping for a deeper run in the playoffs, he called their District 8-8A title and re-

gional quarterfinal win against Palm Harbor University a “step in the right direction.”

Jankowski credited the “all-in” mentality of his players who “un-selfishly worked toward the ulti-mate goal of doing the best they could as a team.” The players bought into their “all-in” team motto to improve on a district runner-up, regional quarterfinal finish from last year.

“That’s always been the thing I’ve tried to hang my hat on as a coach, is being able to connect with players, and we had that unity with the players and the coaches,” Jankowski said. “We decided back in the spring it was the approach we wanted to take. We knew we needed to get bet-ter each week and I think we did that to where we were playing our best football at the end of the season.”
