School BoardThe seven-member school board makes policy and oversees the district’s budget, curriculum, personnel and physical facilities. Members are elected at large for four-year terms. The superintendent serves as an ex-officio member of the board and is responsible for implementation of board policies.

All board meetings are open to the public, except for those specifically permitted by law to be closed for discussion of identified issues such as negotiations strategy or litigation. Meeting notices and agendas are posted in all district buildings and on the district’s website prior to the meetings.

Unless otherwise indicated, regular school board meetings begin at 7 p.m. at Wayzata City Hall, 600 Rice Street, Wayzata, and work sessions begin at 4 p.m. in the District Administration Building, 210 County Road 101 North, Plymouth.

TransportationEven though the state of Minnesota allows students to walk up to two miles to a bus stop or school, Wayzata Public Schools has established shorter walking distances. Board-approved walking distances for students by grade are:

Grade ToSchool ToBusstopKindergarten 0.3 miles 0.3 milesGrades 1-5 0.5 miles 0.5 milesGrades 6-8 0.75 miles 0.5 milesGrades 9-12 1.0 miles 0.5 miles

Students are asked to be at assigned bus stops five minutes prior to stop time. Whenever possible, bus stops are located at corners or intersections. Buses are also not allowed into cul-de-sacs to prevent having to back-up for safety reasons.

All grade 10-12 students are required to register for bus service in advance of each school year. All other district students will be assigned a bus stop. Registration is available online.

First Student and Lost and Found may be reached at 763-559-9326. For answers to questions regarding routes and schedules, please call the district’s transportation department at 763-745-5195. Late runs, bus registration, and attendance area information is available on the district’s website by clicking on “Transportation.” You may access your child’s bus stop, times and bus number from your home by going to the district’s website, selecting “Family Access” and then entering your PIN number.

Culinary ExpressCulinary Express prepares and serves more than 7,000 meals daily and offers students a variety of healthy menu choices. Elementary students have a choice of three entrees; middle and high school students choose from a

variety of entrees and a la carte items. Lunch prices for the 2012-2013 school year are: • Elementary – $2.50 per meal • Secondary – $2.85 per meal • Reduced price – 40 cents per meal • Milk – 50 cents per carton • Adult – $3.65 per meal

Student Directory DataAccording to state and federal laws, student directory data on district students will be released to the general public, unless the district receives annual written notice from the parent, student (18 years or older), or guardian restricting release of the data. Student directory data as defined by board policy #511, includes student name, address, student photos for school-approved publication, telephone listing, date and place of birth, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of the athletic teams, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by student, and grade level. Parents, students (18 years or older), or guardians who wish to restrict release of all or portions of this data to the general public should send a request to: Student Registration, District Welcome Center, 305 Vicksburg Lane, Plymouth, MN 55447.

Students who were previously excluded from outside requests for student directory information will need to once again request an Optional Data Privacy form and complete it to be excluded for the 2012-2013 school year. The forms are available at the schools, or online at www.wayzata.k12.mn.us under “Quick Links” and “Registration.”

Student Insurance NoticeThe district does not provide any type of health or accident insurance for

injuries incurred by your child at school. Parents are encouraged to review personal health and accident insurance programs to determine if coverage is adequate.

Internet UsageThe district continues to integrate technology into its curriculum. To help

facilitate the expansion of Internet usage, district regulations for the Technology Use Policy #103 have been modified. The district continues to use an Internet filter to exclude any undesirable Internet sites. This filter, combined with staff supervision, makes it less likely that students will encounter undesirable sites. The district will

assume permission has been granted by the parent or guardian unless the director of technology is notified in writing that a parent or guardian withdraws permission. A form is available from each school’s principal. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the director of technology at 763-745-5100.

It is the policy of the board to comply with federal and state laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, disability, sexual orientation, age, family care leave status or veteran status. Student Records (continued)• Provision of data sources for student accounting, curriculum research and financial accounting systems at the local, state and federal levels

Information about students, which is essential to these processes, shall be maintained under the supervision of certified staff. The collection, maintenance, accessibility, dissemination and retention of such information shall be controlled by procedures designed to protect the individual rights of students and preserve the confidential nature of the various types of records in accordance with state and federal regulations and laws. The overall responsible authority for student records shall be the superintendent, who shall direct

the development of appropriate procedures to assure protection and privacy of records.

Requests for access to student records, the location of student records, or a copy of board policy #511 may be directed to the district’s data practices compliance official, at 763-745-5066.

Use of Pest Control Materials Wayzata Public Schools uses a licensed, professional pest control service for the prevention and control of rodents, insects and other pests in and around district buildings.

The program consists of: • Inspection and monitoring to determine whether pests are present and whether any treatment is needed

• Recommendations for maintenance and sanitation to help eliminate pests without the need for pest control materials • Utilization of non-chemical measures such as traps, caulking and screening • Application of EPA-registered pest control materials when needed

The long-term health effects on children from the application of such pest control materials, or the class of materials to which they belong, may not be fully understood. All pest control materials are chosen and applied according to label directions per federal law.

An estimated schedule of interior pest control inspections and possible treatments is available for review or copying at each school office. A similar estimated schedule is available for application of herbicides and other materials to school grounds. Parents may request to receive, at their expense, prior notification of any application of a pest control material, should such an application be deemed necessary on a day different from the days specified in the schedule. To make such a request, send a letter with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Wayzata Public Schools, Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, P.O. Box 660, Wayzata, MN 55391. For additional information, call 763-745-5151.
