PALESTINE ISD
Friday, March 8, 2013
2012-2013
Hello everyone,
Jason Marshall, Superintendent
Celebrate Texas Public Schools is held each year and it is our chance to
recognize the contributions made by the many individuals who forged
the way for public education. Many years ago, one room schools began
popping up in communities all over. Parents were excited for their chil-
dren to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic; skills that helped families
then and soon became a necessity. We at Palestine ISD appreciate all of
those who have sacrificed for education and all those who continue to
work for the good of all students.
As a part of Celebrate Texas Public Schools this week, students enjoyed
visits by their moms, dads, and grandparents where they were treated to
refreshments and got to spend quality time together. Palestine High
School invited the community to an open house for the newly renovated
Career and Technology Education Building. Visitors toured the CTE
Building and were served free hotdogs, drinks and desserts.
Palestine ISD will be out for Spring Break next week, March 11-15th and
classes will resume on Monday, March 18th. Have a great week!

The conference will focus on mobile devices in education, best practices to integrate in curriculum, management & infrastructure, and classroom ideas. The event is open to everyone from classroom teachers, administrators, to technology directors. If districts are in the planning stages of acquiring mobile devices or if they have had a 1:1 structure for a while or need ideas to bridge technol-ogy and curriculum, we would love your participation and collaboration. This is an excellent opportunity to net-work with area schools, and share ideas and transform our educational practices to reflect 21st century job skills.
Palestine ISD will be hosting an Educational Technology Conference entitled “iHeartDevices” on August 8, 2013 co-sponsored by
TCEA (Texas Computer Education Agency) and Apple.
Registration is open at tcea.org and more information can be found on the website iHeartDevices.weebly.com. For more information contact Shannon Leisure at extension 1270 or Kim Nelms at 1272.

BOOT CAMP
Our annual Boot Camp began this week with our 2013
football players. Boot Camp has become an annual
tradition that anyone wishing to play football must go
through. We have 145 players that will go through our
Boot Camp that will begin today with the Classroom
portion. We will spend 3½ days of intense character
training to try to instill the values they will need to be
successful now and later in life. Once the classroom
portion of Boot Camp is complete we will begin the
physical stage of Boot Camp. This stage is about learning
to encourage each other and pushing past fatigue. We
will continue with character training during this time
with the Word of the Day which will include topics such
as honesty, dependability, teamwork, courage, focus,
and commitment.
Boot Camp is a time that we strive to be “perfect”. In the
classroom, the dressing room, on the field and in life. We
will keep you updated with daily reports on how our
young men are performing.

CAREER EDUCATION CLASS
Students in Mrs. Campos Career Education class have been learning about skills necessary to be successful in the work place. They are applying all they have learned when we return from Spring break as they request posi-tions on our campus and perform tasks on campus. We look forward to our new employees.
CHEERLEADING CLINIC
Palestine Junior High has enjoyed hosting 6th grade students who have participated in our after school cheerleading clinic. They have joined our seventh grade girls in work-ing hard to present themselves to judges Friday after school. A big cheer also goes out to Mrs. Jenna Williams who has done a great job organizing and working with these young ladies and parents. Junior High cheerleaders are lucky to have such an out-standing role model.
TRACK
Junior High boys traveled to Rusk Monday and came home with two first place trophies for overall win-ning teams….We are not just proud of their wins in their athletic events but their winning attitudes and behaviors as they represent our campus. They have great coaches who lead by example. Mark your cal-endars to come watch our young athletes in action.

YOUTH & GOVERNMENT
This past weekend, thirteen of your Junior Youth & Government delegates from the Palestine Junior High School (formally PMS) presented bills in the House of Representatives and Senate at our state capital in Austin. Over 270 plus 6th, 7th, & 8th grade dele-gates from across the state participated.
The purpose of the program is to bring the workings of state government alive to the students. Our students had to come up with their own bill topic, research, and present the bill at District. They then tweaked their bill proposals to present and debate in com-mittee and then on the House & Senate floors of the Capital all day Saturday. Six of the seven bills passed. Each of our students deserve a big round of applause for a job well done.
Also, our adult Advisors Sharie Bailey and Sandy Webb were also awarded with service pins for their participation in the program for 5 Plus years. Sandy Webb was selected as Distinguished Volunteer of the Conference and was presented a Texas Flag by the YMCA Texas Youth & Government and the Texas House of Representatives that was flown at the Capital.
Here is a list of our students and their bill topics that were presented.
Ricky Brown & Corbyn Mitchell – A bill entitled – “An Act Mandating that each county coordinate with agencies to provide training, transportation, and shelter for the homeless to promote them to self-sustaining citizens”
Jacob Hatfield & Jeremy Simms – A bill entitled – “An Act requiring the first time offense of DWI have the option of deferred adju-dication for sentencing at the judge’s digression”
Arielle Looney & Ashley Waldon – A bill entitled - “An Act mandating that no civilian person can carry a firearm that uses a clip with more than ten bullets”
Macy Stone & Davis Morton – A bill entitled – “An Act mandating that all wait staff receive minimum wage”
Katie Stone & Morghyn Harper – A bill entitled – “An Act demanding that animal shelters extend the holding time before euthaniz-ing from 72 hours to 2 weeks”
Destiny Toye – A bill entitled – “An act requiring that any business that serves alcohol must provide a keeper of the keys who moni-tors consumers on their alcohol level and prevents those over the allowed limit from driving”
Nick Williamson & Taylor Rosson – A bill entitled – “An act outlawing the usage of spiked tire rims on a vehicle”

Students celebrated Dr. Seuss Day. For weeks
we were getting prepared for the big day. Doors
were decorated, hats were made, Librarian Ms.
Campbell hung pictures in the hallway and books
were read in the library and classroom. Mrs.
Campbell even dressed up as Dr. Seuss character
and made a Cat in the Hat Cake for the students
to enjoy.
We also had a great Texas Public School
Week. Moms came for muffins, dads came for do-
nuts and grandparents showed up for goodies
(cookies). Even some of the students were able to
go home for the day with their grandparents (if they were able to talk them into it).
