ASME MISSION STATEMENT  

To serve our diverse global communities by advancing, disseminating and applying engineering knowledge for improving the quality of life; and communicating the excitement of engineering.   

 

ASME VISION STATEMENT  

ASME will be the essential resource for mechanical engineers and other technical professionals throughout the world for solutions that benefit humankind.   

 

ASME STRATEGIC DIRECTION  

The ASME Board of Governors has established three strategic priorities for the society in the areas of energy, global impact and engineering workforce development.  Strategy Execution Teams (SETs) provide enterprise‐level leadership to support implementation of the strategic direction across the organization.   Energy Strategy Statement 

ASME will serve as an essential energy technology resource and leading advocate for technically sound energy policies.       Global Impact  Statement 

ASME will collaborate to develop and provide locally relevant engineering resources that advance public safety and quality of life throughout the world.        Engineering Workforce Development Strategy Statement 

ASME will foster a broader, competent, vibrant and more diverse engineering workforce with sustained engagement in ASME over all career stages.

MARC W. GOLDSMITH, P.E.  

 Marc W. Goldsmith, P.E., is serving as the 131st president of ASME for the 2012‐2013 

term of office. 

An active member of the Society for more than 24 years, Goldsmith has held 

numerous leadership positions within the organization, serving on the ASME Board of 

Governors from 2007‐2010 and as vice president of the Center for Public Awareness 

from 2005‐2007. He is the founding chair of the General Management Board of the 

ASME Innovation Technologies Institute (ITI) and has served on the ITI board. Other 

leadership positions in ASME include vice president of the Board on Public 

Information, chair of the task force on Strategic Marketing for the Board of 

Governors, and a member of the task force on the Board of Minorities and Women. 

He is a fellow of ASME and recipient of the Society's Dedicated Service Award (2001). 

An expert in energy and nuclear engineering, Goldsmith founded Marc Goldsmith & Associates LLC in Newton, 

Mass., to advise gas and electric firms on strategies for addressing technology, policy, and business processes. As 

a management consultant, Goldsmith has been involved in all aspects of electricity generation, transmission, 

distribution, and retail service. 

Prior to starting his consulting firm, Goldsmith was a vice president at Stone & Webster Management 

Consultants, where he was responsible for strategic energy businesses. He also served as a director in 

Technology and Innovation Management at Arthur D. Little. From 1975‐1998, Goldsmith was president of 

Energy Research Group, Inc., a Massachusetts‐based energy technology company, which he co‐founded. 

In addition to ASME, Goldsmith is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, the American Nuclear 

Society, IEEE, Engineers Without Borders‐USA (EWB‐USA) and the International Association of Energy 

Economists. He has served on the national board of directors of EWB‐USA. 

Marc Goldsmith holds a degree of nuclear engineer as well as a Master of Science degree in nuclear engineering 

from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass. He also earned a bachelor's degree in marine 

nuclear science from State University New York Maritime College, Fort Schulyer, N.Y.

ASME AUXILIARY, INC. The ASME Auxiliary, Inc., established in 1923 and incorporated as a charitable non‐profit organization in 1977, establishes and supports scholarships  and  loans  to  students  of mechanical  engineering  at  both  the  graduate  and  undergraduate  levels.    It  also  supports  the objectives of ASME to promote the advancement of the art, science and practice of mechanical engineering.  Membership is open to all members of the immediate families of ASME members, as well as members themselves.  An Associate Membership is now available for all those persons interested in furthering the purpose of The Auxiliary. Members may join a Section, if one is available in their area of the United States, or they may become Members‐At‐Large.  Dues are $25 per year or $150 for a lifetime membership.  Section dues are determined by the local Section.

EDUCATIONAL FUNDS 

With the exception of the Rice‐Cullimore grants, the following grants shall be made solely to citizens of the United States who are students of Mechanical Engineering, enrolled in schools having accredited Mechanical Engineering Departments. Financial aid is available to students in their final undergraduate year and to students at the graduate  level. All recipients must hold some grade of membership  in ASME  if their school has a student section.  It  is the policy of the Auxiliary that no one student be awarded more than one grant (scholarship or  loan) from the Auxiliary  in the same academic year.  No scholarship will be awarded if ASME has already awarded one. For details, contact the ASME Auxiliary at ASME headquarters or at the internet web site www.asme.org.  Undergraduate
