Whether you are planning a visit or considering relocation to our region, this guidebook has been designed to give you an overview of our area. It’s a great place to relocate or to start a business!

Foreign Direct Investment magazine ranked Maine’s qual-ity of life as the best in the nation in its 2004/2006 “U.S. Cit-ies and States of the Future” issue. Those of us who live here know why.

Our schools and hospitals are second to none. The crime rate is remarkably low. Our region supports two fine hospital systems and a host of medical-related businesses, four col-leges and several manufacturing facilities.

Our natural resources abound. We are bordered by the Belgrade Lakes (inspiration for On Golden Pond), China Lake, and the mighty Kennebec River, which is world renowned for its brown trout fishing.

We are also home to outstanding and affordable golf courses, such as the Waterville Country Club and Natanis. Snowmobiling and cross country ski trails are plentiful. Kennebec Messalon-skee Trails has miles of recreation trails with further trail development on-going in several com-munities, and the Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville offers snowmaking and grooming for great conditions all season. Colby College offers a bird arboretum and an outstanding mu-seum of art that by 2013 will be the largest in the state.

Exciting business opportunities flourish within our region. The mixed-use redevelopment of the Hathaway Shirt complex in Waterville is flourishing. When completed, this project will not only produce economic benefit to the entire area, but also symbolize our shift to the new economy.

FirstPark, located in Oakland off Interstate 95, is the vision of 24 communities that have come together to form Maine’s premier technology park. This Verizon Smart Park features state-of-the-art fiber optics and self-healing telecommunications systems in a campus-like atmosphere. Wins-low is home to Northeast Laboratories as well as an expanding Lohmann Animal Health, one of the largest poultry vaccine producers in the world.

Waterville has been recognized as one of the best places to raise a family. Alfond Youth Cen-ter, a multi-million dollar Boys’ and Girls’ Club/YMCA complex, a first of its kind collaboration, is a world class recreation center that includes two indoor pools. We are embracing and develop-ing the “creative economy” in our area – from local artisans to a one-of-a-kind Opera House, the focus of a $4.3 million renovation.

L ocated on the banks of the Kennebec River, Waterville is home to a mix of shops and res-taurants as well as two colleges, Thomas Col-lege and Colby College. A Main Street Maine community, Waterville takes great pride in its downtown, which is home to seven structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to many shops and one-of-a-kind eater-ies. Waterville is easily accessed with two exits off Interstate 95 as well as Route 201, which touts a national, historic byway and is part of the Kennebec-Chaudiere Corridor. Visitors to Waterville will enjoy numerous arts and cul-tural amenities, including the magnificent Wa-terville Opera House, Colby College Museum of Art, Redington Museum and Railroad Square Cinema. Waterville hosts a year round calendar of outstanding events, such as the Maine Inter-national Film Festival, Waterville Intown Arts-Fest, Taste of Greater Waterville, Harvest Fest

and Downtown Waterville Farmers’ Market. Shoppers will find a wide array of products,

including upscale women’s clothing, home furnishings, jewelry, Maine-made products, art, toys and books, and much more.

Dining options are equally as diverse, offering authentic Lebanese and Mexican cui-sines, Asian specialties, eclectic American fare, deli-cious pub food, barbeque, and fresh seafood, great bagels, sandwiches and coffee.

Outdoor enthusiasts will delight over the miles of hiking trails located throughout the City and its neighboring communities, includ-ing the newly developed Quarry Road Recrea-tion Area, which also provides cross country skiing in the winter months.

L ocated on the east bank of the Kennebec River across the bridge from Waterville, Wins-low is a town rich in history and pride. Settlers arrived in the early 1700s and built their homes around the protective “Fort Halifax” on the confluence of the Sebasticook and Kennebec Rivers, major routes in transporting food, goods, and more settlers. The Winslow Fort Halifax Blockhouse, formerly the nation’s old-est wooden structure of its type, was rebuilt from some of the timbers of the original Block-house that was swept down the Kennebec River by raging flood waters on April 1, 1987.

Winslow has a population of approximately 8,000 and provides excellent commercial, in-dustrial and residential opportunities. Johnny’s Selected Seeds, one of the world’s top rated seed catalog companies, is open for business on Benton Avenue in Winslow. Mid-State Ma-chine Products, one of Maine’s largest manu-facturers of specialty machinery is favorably located on Route 201. Lohmann Animal Health is located on Route 137 and is a leading manu-facturer and supplier of poultry biologics for the U.S. and international vaccine markets.

A stable, council-manager government has operated under a Town Charter since 1969.

Winslow has successfully maintained one of the more attractive property tax rates in the area and can boast an excellent educational system, outstanding athletic programs, and some of the finer recreational facilities in the state. Winslow is a warm, friendly, progressive community and an excellent place to call home.

akland, neighboring Waterville to the west, is the gateway to the well-known Belgrade Lakes. Three major bodies of water in the Bel-grade Lakes chain dominate the landscape, providing many opportunities for water-related activities. The attractiveness of the lakes makes it easy to see why the town has one of the larg-est concentrations of summer camps for chil-dren in all of Maine. Oakland was originally settled as “West Waterville,” but early inhabi-tants soon tired of being west of anyone, as the historians tell it, and incorporated under their own name in 1883. It was soon apparent that the town’s tumbling Messalonskee Stream

would draw industries to take advantage of this considerable source of water power. A front runner in recognizing environmental issues, Oakland was one of the first towns in the state to build a municipal sewerage treatment facil-ity. Among attractions is the Memorial Hall on Church Street, built by Civil War veterans, and the Octagon House on Summer Street at the northerly end of Messalonskee Lake. Private homes range from stately New England classics to cape and ranch homes.

Oakland is a beautiful place to reside and raise a family.

BELGRADE — Mid-Maine’s Lake Country ust 10 miles west of the city of Waterville is the beautiful region known as the Belgrade

Lakes. The town of Belgrade was incorporated in 1796, as the 102nd town of the Province of Maine in the Common wealth of Massachusetts. The name was chosen by John Vassal Davis who admired Belgrade, Yugoslavia, when he visited there as a representative of the East India Com-pany.

By the late 1880s, the region was discovered by vacationers and by the early 1900s, large num-bers of tourists arrived by steam train. Today, tourists still enjoy the breath-taking beauty of this magnificent region. The Belgrade Lakes include the towns and villages of Belgrade, Belgrade Lakes, North Bel-grade, Smithfield, and parts of Rome, Sidney, and Oakland; as it was some eighty years ago, is still a most popular place to visit, vacation, or live. Great Pond, the largest of the lakes in the re-gion, was the inspiration for the play and movie, “On Golden Pond.” www.belgrademaine.com

The town has a reputa-tion for some of the finer schools in the entire state and for its fiscally conser-vative municipal govern-ment. Preparing for the future, Oakland has a comprehensive plan to promote organ-ized development and a full range of mu-nicipal services, including curbside park-ing. Because of its proximity to Interstate 95 and prime development areas, Oakland

was selected as the site for FirstPark - Maine’s Premier Technology Center. Billed as the first of its kind in Maine, this high tech park

provides suitable locations for the emerg-ing businesses of the 21st century.

Once complete, First-Park will provide 2,500 direct jobs and an equal number gen-erated by ancillary businesses.

FAIRFIELD irst settled in 1771, the town of Fairfield has some of the most beautiful historic sites recorded in the National Historic Reg-ister. The Cotton-Smith History House and Museum is located at 42 High Street, and is home to the Fairfield Historical Society.

Other architectural jewels include the Lawrence Public Library, Connor-Bovie House and the Amos Gerald House. Fair-field (pop. 6,700) is known as an important crossroads and is the point of intersection of two of the largest transportation corri-dors in the state, U.S. Route 201 and Inter-state 95. Along Route 201 is an “Antiques Corridor,” with several antique stores and world class auction halls. Fairfield is home to many thriving businesses and with 55 square miles also contains large areas of developable land.

The town has a substantial urban residen-tial and historic downtown district and several quaint unincorporated villages that contribute to its charm and character, in-cluding Fairfield Center, Hinckley Vil-lage and Shawmut Village.

Fairfield is home to Kennebec Valley Community College and the Maine Acad-emy of Natural Science at Good-Will Hinckley.

Fairfield is a fine community in which to live and work, with all the recreational and cultural amenities the region affords.

BENTON enton is located on the east bank of the Kennebec River, across the three bridges from Fairfield. The area was first settled in 1763 and incorporated as Sebasticook on March 16, 1842. The name was changed to Benton in 1850. With a park and walking trails, Benton offers the pleasant feeling of small town closeness combined with easy access to all the benefits of the total mid-Maine community. www.bentonmaine.info

SIDNEY idney is a fast growing community noted for having one of the lower tax rates in Kennebec County.

Surrounding the town to the east is the Ken-nebec River and to the west is Messalonskee Lake, where the headquarters for the famed New England Music Camp is located. The lake is also surrounded by summer resorts and cot-tage colonies. Both Messalonskee Lake and the Kennebec River have public boat access within their borders. Several other smaller ponds make up a nice rural setting. Centrally located is the Town Office, Grange Hall, Transfer/Recycling Facility and the Public Works Department. The James H. Bean School, K-6 grades, has been recognized by the State of Maine as a leader in

efficiency and education. The district is distin-guished by having had two National Educator Milken Award winners, both from Sidney.

Located in three strategic areas are the Town Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, serving the needs for all fire and rescue. Access to neighboring towns and cities, such as Water-ville and Augusta, are Routes 23, 27, 104, and Interstate 95. I-95 makes this town a prime location for industries because of its own en-trance and exit ramps. The rest of the commu-nity is a rural atmosphere made up of farming, small business.

ome is located in the heart of the Belgrade chain of lakes. There are fishing, sailing, and swimming opportunities to be enjoyed in any of the seven lakes of this 150-square mile lake re-gion. A popular 40-mile canoe adventure takes paddlers through the lakes chain.

Rome was first settled in 1780 and originally named West Pond Plantation. The town was incorporated in 1804. Rome is an attractive com-munity in which to settle.

ROME lbion, population 2,041, remains a typical Maine small town. Founded in 1804, its proud history boasts ties to Elijah Lovejoy, Amer-ica’s first martyr to freedom of the press. Al-bion’s central village, excellent elementary school, library and health center provide focus on family. With proximity to the greater Wa-terville area, it has ideal small business poten-tial as demonstrated by the growth of Johnny’s Selected Seeds.

CLINTON BURNHAM linton, located five miles north of Fairfield, is bounded on the west by the Kennebec River and on the east by the Sebasticook River. The town was first settled in 1775 and incorporated in 1795. Because of the Clinton I-95 inter-change, the town is attractive to industrial development. Clinton is a diversified mid-Maine community with pleasant residential areas, beautiful rural land, small fabrication factories, the largest dairy industry in the state, and premier nine-hole golf course. Clinton is home to the extremely popular annual Clinton Lion’s Club Agricultural Fair.

urnham is bordered by the Sebasticook River on one side and is known as the “Home of Lake Winnecook.” One of the streams run-ning through Burnham gave the town its origi-nal name of Twenty-Five Mile Plantation. The Town was incorporated in 1824.

Burnham is home to both industry and arti-sans, such as Pride Manufacturing and Burn-ham Shaker Products. nity is located on Routes 9 and 202 and was incorporated June 22, 1804. It is the home of Unity College, which specializes in environ-mental sciences and outdoor recreation.

The college has an art gallery, lecture and concert series, and an excellent library with a children’s loft, all of which are open to the public.

Unity is located on the shores of Lake Winne-cook, a fine place to boat, fish and swim. A public boat ramp and ample parking available gives easy access to the lake. Also located on the shores of Lake Winnecook is the “Field of Dreams” Athletic Complex. The Complex has a walking path, several ball fields, picnic tables, and an excellent playground with all new equip-ment. The Snowduster’s Snowmobile Club maintains several snowmobile trails throughout the town for winter fun. Unity is home to Unity Raceway, a local summer favorite of stock car

fans. It is located on Route 139 and is open from mid-spring to late fall.

Every fall, the popular Common Ground Fair attracts thousands of people to witness and enjoy the delights of homemade ice cream and natural food. Unity’s attractions make it an all-seasons place to work and play.

he town of Thorndike was established in 1819. It is a quaint little village with a popula-tion of 712. Miles of winding rural roads cap-ture breathtaking views.

The small community is famously known for the “Gordon Hill Murders” that took place June 16, 1873. The courts handed down a guilty

verdict and a sentence of hanging was carried out. Later, a letter arrived claiming the wrong man was hanged; someone else committed these gruesome murders. Because of this trial, capital punishment was ended in the state.

assalboro stretches from the east bank of the Kennebec River to the west shore of China Lake. It is the home of farmers, woodsmen and commuters to Waterville and Augusta.

Settled in 1760 and incorporated in 1771, Vassalboro is located on Routes 32 and 201. Vassalboro has frontage on a major river (the Kennebec) and on four lakes and ponds, result-ing in outstanding recreational opportunities.

Vassalboro is home to Duratherm Window Company, York Spiral Stair, and has some of the larger dairy farms in the area. It is also home to Natanis Golf Course, a 36-hole public course, one of the largest north of Boston. www.vassalboro.net

HUNTING Maine boasts of 600 or more

200-pound bucks tagged each November. Bear hunting is the finest in the east, and the state offers a fall moose season, chosen by lottery, unmatched in hunter success any-where in the nation. FISHING

Fishing opportunities abound with nearly one million fish stocked in open water annu-ally. Mid-Maine fish include: brown trout, brook trout, lake trout, rainbow trout, land-locked salmon, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, splake, togue and northern pike.

Licenses and regulation booklets are available at the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for hunting and recreational fishing on inland waters. Costs vary by class, purpose and residency.

aine offers fun activities for both visitors and residents. No matter what your interests may be, you will find something of interest to you, whether it be battling the mighty Kenne-bec, walking down Main Street or just relax-ing for the day at a lake. You will find fun in every season.

Springtime has the sweet smell of maple sugar camps boiling up their brew. Schools begin their spring concerts and competitions in tennis, softball, baseball, and track. Waters are great for freshwater fishing, canoeing, kayak-ing, boating, swimming, sailing, water skiing, jet skiing, and camping on the hundreds of lakes, rivers and streams that speckle the mid-Maine region.

With the habitat of our area, it’s a great place for bird watching as they migrate back from winter territories. Hiking trails can be found at French’s Mountain in Rome or Ox-bow Nature Preserve in Waterville.

There are numerous Kennebec-Messalonskee Trails. Colby College’s entire campus is designated as a wildlife manage-ment area and 128 acres have been set aside as an arboretum and trail for walking and nature study.

For the outdoor folks and history buffs, ex-plore Good Will-Hinckley’s campus. The campus features the L.C. Bates Museum with Arboretum and forest walking trails. Also visit

the historic Moody Memorial Chapel. For those history buffs, you can visit Redington Museum and Apothecary. Thomas College and Colby College offer art museums featur-ing pieces from local and famous artists.

If walking or bird watching doesn’t suit your needs, you can always go for a picnic at Fort Halifax Park. Visit Field of Dreams Park in Unity for some fun that the whole family can enjoy.

Summertime offers a great opportu-nity for white water rafting adven-tures on the Kennebec River. Contact Magic Falls Rafting Company and North Country Rivers to sign up for your adventure today!

There are many different camps that children can attend. The Alfond Youth Center hosts the Central Maine Basket-ball Camp, Camp Tracy, Karate Camp, Climb-ing Camp, Baseball Camp, Summer Golf Camp, and Summer Gymnastics Camp.

Thomas and Colby Colleges hold softball, soccer, basketball, and cheerleading camps.

If these aren’t the type of camps you’re look-ing for, the New England Music Camp has students who perform concerts that are open to the public or Maine Golf & Tennis Academy offers lessons.

For outdoor activities, you can find tennis courts that are scattered throughout the area, including the Colby College campus and in-door at Champions Fitness Club.

Parks and playgrounds that feature soccer fields, baseball diamonds, bike trails and bas-ketball courts, can be found in Fairfield, Wins-low, Waterville, Oakland, and Unity and in most towns in the mid-Maine Region.

Fairs, craft shows, parades, and celebrations occur throughout the year.

The Taste of Greater Waterville, held the first Wednesday in August, is a spectacular event. Downtown Main Street is shut down, restau-rants serve the best cuisine that mid-Maine has to offer, and bands and musi-cians entertain the crowd under the stars.

A year round attraction, the Kennebec-Chaudière Interna-tional Corridor is a tourist route rich in history and cul-ture with heritage that links the providence of Quebec to the state of Maine.

Bicycling is another great summer activity that mid- Maine has to offer. It’s a great way to take a look at the beautiful scenery, with our bike-friendly roads and shared-use paths.

Benton Family Fun Park offers a place to go-kart, mini golf and much more. If it’s ice cream, batting cages or and mini golf you pre-fer, try Gifford’s Ice Cream for some old fash-ioned favorites.

To take you away from the summer heat, try visiting one of the many lakes or pools that are in the area. The pool facilities are located at the Morton Brody Playground, the Alfond

Youth Center, Best West-ern Plus, Fireside Inn & Suites, and Hampton Inn. If you’re looking for lake-front rentals, try Belgrade Four Season Cottages, Alden Camps and Belgrade Lakes Resources. There is also an abundant number of lakes, ponds and rivers that are accessible for swimming. Hunt for wild-turkey, ruffed grouse, upland game and waterfowl. In wintertime, there’s still so much you can do, but make sure you bundle up. Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, and ice-fishing are just some of the fun activities you can enjoy. Indoor and outdoor rinks are accessible at both Colby College in Waterville and Sukee Arena in Winslow. Snowmobile trails are extensive in Fairfield, Winslow, and the outskirts of Waterville. Both Pine Ridge Golf Course and Colby College offer excellent places for sledding. Ice fishing is another activity that you can enjoy throughout the area. The various waterways area offers a wide range of fish species.

Mid-Maine offers plentiful ice fishing tourna-ments in the area as professional anglers and amateurs battle for the heftiest catch.

If you encounter an unfavorable weather day, go to one of mid-Maine’s great indoor facilities. There are many health facilities in the area. They offer a variety of indoor tennis, racquet-ball, and basketball courts, aerobics, weight rooms, pools, saunas, massages, yoga and physical therapy programs.

John Morton (Morton Trails, LLC) has de-signed more than 7.5 miles of trails of excep-tional beauty and variety, winding through the woods between upper Main Street and Messa-lonskee Stream.

The multi-use, four-season Recreation Area has a lot to offer. The 4.5km River Loop Trail is 16-18’ in width with a 4' wide gravel path around the entire perimeter designed for walk-ing and mountain biking. The trail offers beau-tiful views of the stream, impressive hemlock and pine stands and leads to an enormous open field at the base of what was the old Colby ski slope.

The 7.5km Hillside Trail is a bit more chal-lenging. Designed for competitive Nordic skiing, the trail is 20-30' in width with several steep climbs and thrilling descents. The entire trail network has been designed for multiple uses including skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking (both single and double track), walking, and running.

WATERVILLE MAIN STREET Waterville Main Street is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation with a volunteer Board of Directors. In 2001, Waterville was designated as one of the first four Main Street Maine communities in Maine desig-

nated by the National Main Street Center through the Maine Downtown Center. The National Main Street Center is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and now involves more than 2,000 towns and cities throughout the country.

WMSt is staffed by a full time executive director and a part time administrative assistant. Main Street communities follow a comprehensive and incremental approach to downtown revitalization. Four key committees (Organization, Design, Promotion and Economic Restructuring) bring together a broad cross section of volunteers to design and implement work plans in each area.

id-Maine has numerous means of transpor-tation to suit business exchange and tourist needs. Interstate 95 bisects the mid-Maine region conveniently, offering five exits and on-ramps that lead to various mid-Maine com-munities.

Mid-Maine’s central location makes points of interest and trade easily accessible through the area’s highway system. We like to say “we are a hop-skip-and-a-jump to the door of end-less opportunity” because Waterville is ap-proximately 75 miles from Portland, Maine’s largest city; 50 miles from Bangor, Maine’s “Queen City;” 35 miles from coastal Maine, a major tourist attraction; and 70 miles from the western Maine ski mountains and Sugarloaf USA.

Approximately one-half of the population of Maine lives within a 50-mile radius of the region. The area is a commercial, cultural, industrial, medical, and recreational center for 150,000 people.

The locale is serviced by Robert A. LaF-leur Municipal Airport (www.watervilleairport.org). The airport ac-cepts corporate and general aviation aircraft landings. Airlink, located at the airport, offers

flight training, scenic flights and air charters. Maine Central Railroad offers freight trans-

portation, and two nearby major deep-water seaports provide water transportation.

Vermont Transit/Greyhound Bus Line serves the region with a depot in Waterville 207-872-5000.

Kennebec Valley Transit provides trans-portation services for all individuals 207-877-5677 along with The Kennebec Explorer (www.kennebecexplorer.com), which provides low-cost and convenient community bus ser-vice for Augusta, Waterville, and nearby com-munities. Several car rental agencies and taxi companies service local residents and tourists alike.

The Bangor International Airport (BGR) is only a one-hour drive north from Waterville and offers a broad range of convenient ser-vices, great connections to major cities on major carriers, easy terminal access, and low costs for services such as parking.

Air service is also provided by Cape Air at the Augusta Airport.
