A new era begins! | 2012-2013 Season
Dear Friends,

Welcome to our 51st season! This season features so much great
music that changed the course of history that I can’t wait for you
to experience all of it!
Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in February, Stravinsky’s ballet Rite of
Spring in November and Wagner’s Ring Cycle all changed how we
experience and think about music. All three composers refused to
be shackled by the conventions of their time, and all three took
risks that ended in total triumph. All three works are thrilling!
In November we continue our inspiring collaboration with
Ballet Idaho and the Boise Philharmonic Master Chorale.
We will join forces to present a brand new ballet by Idaho
composer, James Cockey, called Sacred Land. This work
honors the Shoshone and Bannocks who were relocated away
from the Treasure Valley in the mid-19th Century. As we
prepare to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Boise, it’s
important that we remember those who came before us.
We have a few beloved guest artists returning with Rachel
Barton Pine and Roberto Plano, and a few new guest artists
making their debut with us, including George Li and Jennifer
Frautschi. Finally, my colleague and friend, Carl Topilow,
will return to Boise after 40 years to conduct a “toe-tapping”
Big Band program in the spring.
I love that music can have such a profound effect on our lives,
and make history. I am grateful that you will be spending time
with us as we make some history of our own.
Sincerely,
Robert Franz
For all train enthusiasts, Honegger’s descriptive
Pacific 231 is a fanciful musical description of the
famed steam locomotive. Similarly, Sibelius’ Violin
Concerto creates a “sound-scape” that is a musical
postcard of the composer’s homeland, Finland.
Finally, from the most romantic of all composers,
Johannes Brahms’ First Symphony sings with
beautiful melodies from beginning to end.
Both composers, Franz Schubert and
W.A. Mozart, were known for their singing
melodies, effervescent orchestrations, and keen
wit. With these two Austrians, the Philharmonic
will take you to a time gone by, filled with elegance
and charm, while we introduce one of today’s rising
stars, pianist George Li.

“The Boise River ran red with the blood of our
people.” And so began the journey of relocation
of thousands of Shoshone and Bannock
Americans. We honor those lost and begin the
journey of reconciliation with Sacred Land, a
brand new work for chorus, soloists and dancers
(Ballet Idaho) by Idaho composer, James Cockey.
In a similar way, Igor Stravinsky wrote his earth
shattering ballet score, The Rite of Spring to honor
his Russian heritage.
Before there was the epic tale The Lord of the Rings,
Wagner’s expansive opera The Ring of the
Nibelungen was composed. Wagner changed the
course of musical history by integrating the
emotional impact of his opera into the orchestral
score. We will present highlights of this 19th
century masterpiece without the words, yet still
filled with all of the emotion and drama of this
great story.

Like Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring that you
heard in November, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony
changed classical music forever. This piece of music
expanded the scope of what a symphony could be,
not only with the addition of the human voice, but
with a message of eternal hope and brotherhood.
We begin this program with Beethoven’s First
Symphony presenting the alpha and the omega of
this incredible composer’s symphonic output.
Martha Graham’s unique and inspirational style of
dance, and habit of commissioning new works, led
to one of the most well known American ballet
scores ever written, Appalachian Spring by Aaron
Copland. Combine that with masterpieces by
J.S. Bach and the Spring Symphony by Robert
Schumann, and you have a concert of light, love
and optimism.

The 1940’s was a period of immense change and an
incredible banding together of Americans of all
stripes. Through it all musicians like Benny
Goodman, Artie Shaw and Glenn Miller kept our
spirits high. We are thrilled to bring some of that
optimism and joy to you with guest conductor,
Clarinetist and Music Director of the Cleveland
Pops, Carl Topilow.
If you enjoy lush, romantic melodies…if you love
to see musicians sink their teeth into dramatic
music…if you want to be swept away by the
power of Rachmaninov and film composer
Erich Korngold, then this is the concert for you.
We promise that you will leave the hall humming
and with a smile on your face.
