Spirit Wear Fridays• Students are encouraged to wear their Fite

Spirit Wear every Friday.• The primary and intermediate classes with

the most participants earn 10 extra minutes of recess.

• Purchase of spirit shirts are available in C-5. (Prices vary)

Monday Morning Assemblies

• Each Monday an assembly will be held at 8:00 a.m., weather

permitting. During the assembly we will conduct the flag salute (led by students from assigned class for the week), introduce the

character education focus for the week,and any other student/siteannouncements will be made.

Notebook Patrol• To help promote organization, students in

grades 3rd- 6th will participate in notebook and desk checks once per month.

• Ms. Rueda will check one student’s notebook from each class per month. • Students chosen for the notebook check and done correctly will choose a prize from the “Principal’s Notebook Patrol” prize box.

Principal’s Writing Club

• Teachers will choose one student per classroom (per month) to share with the principal their favorite writing assignment. Selected students will be invited to come to the principal’s recognition writing activity. Each child will receive a treat and then read their favorite writing for that month. They will also receive a writing certificate.

• These funds are handed out by all staff to students who are displaying our highlighted character theme(s). Funds can be used at the bi-monthly student store.

Accelerated ReaderKindergarten through sixth grade students have an

opportunity to participate in our Accelerated Reader program.

Criteria:• Kindergarten- letter names and sounds and sight word

knowledge• 1st grade- words per minute read• 2nd-6th- comprehension tests on books read

Please encourage your child(ren) to read, read, read!!

Math ClubKindergarten through sixth grade students have an

opportunity to participate in our Math Club program.

Rewards-• When the grade level Math Club

accomplishments are attained students in grades Kindergarten through Sixth will earn their Math Club Star, which is posted in the Multipurpose Room, and earn the opportunity to purchase a Math Club t-shirt. Recipients will also be invited to attend an end of the year Math Club Recognition Celebration.

Ayp• Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)- Under NCLB

schools must make “AYP” in several areas, based primarily on:– Performance: Percentage of students in each

subgroup scoring proficient and above in ELA and Math. Fite’s subgroups: Asian, Hispanic or Latino, White, Socio-Econ. Disadvant., English Learners

– Participation: Percentage of students in each subgroup taking the tests.• Subgroups- numerically significant~ must

be 100 pupils or 15% of total enrollment with at least 50 pupils with valid test scores.

API• Academic Performance Index (API)- A state

accountability measure in which schools are assigned an API based on results from STAR testing (200- 1000). API is also used to evaluate schools for AYP.

• Parents should expect to receive their student’s test scores in the mail the last week in August.

• Fite’s 2011 API- 834• California Department of Education (CDE)

anticipates the STAR test results public release date to be August 31st.

Paper Drive starts Wed.!

When: Wed., Aug. 15th through Fri., Sept. 7th What: For each ream donated, your student(s) will

earn a raffle ticket for a chance to win a $25 gift card from Game Stop, Target or Leatherby’s. Drawings will occur on Fridays: August 24th, August 31st, and September 7th (one prize will be awarded each week).

How: Please bring any donated reams of copy paper to the school office to receive your raffle ticket.

• Students who participated in the Summer Reading Program over the break need to return the top portion of the reading contract (with the list of books read) by this Friday, August 17th.

Highlights• Choice of three main entrées

• Student must take 3 out of 5 components (From My Plate)

• Students must take a fruit or vegetable

• 1% low fat white milk or non-fat chocolate milk

• Menus are nutritional analyzed to meet dietary guidelines and contain less than 30% of the calories from fat

• Nutritional information for each meal is available on our school website

gain– 925 grams of sugar = 231 teaspoons of sugar or

4.8 cups of sugar– 325 grams of fat = 3.5 cubes of butter

Obesity Statistics by State - 1985-2010

• Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. • BMI is calculated from a person's weight and height and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems. • Obesity is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
