PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Christine Arsenault – President

Dear CAFCE Members, How quickly another year goes by! 2012/13 was the year of “Administration” for CAFCE. In 2013 as a Board, we dedicated our time to focusing on a number of critical administrative functions. We believe that this focus will help to lay the foundation for a very bright and innovative future for CAFCE. Key priorities included overseeing the transition to a new administrative structure with the association management firm, Managing Matters; aligning our by-laws and administration with the new Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act and developing and implementing a new CAFCE website and national database. The transition to Managing Matters was essential for financial viability and for improved service to our members. Working closely with Carol Cox, CAFCE Office Manager, Jenny Faucher, President of Managing Matters and Daniela Attard, Account Manager at Managing Matters, a smooth transition of all CAFCE business was realized. We are now benefitting from Managing Matter’s vast expertise in budgeting and cost-savings, not-for-profit association expertise, event planning and networks. The Government of Canada released new legislations under the Not-for-profit Corporations Act that must be complied with by October 17

th, 2014. In order to meet this deadline, we needed to review all new requirements against our

existing by-laws and present recommended changes to the membership in time for the October 2013 AGM. This was completed by a CAFCE task force and vetted by the membership in the spring of 2013. It was a great opportunity to incorporate member feedback and improve the structure of the CAFCE Board. The changes will be voted on by the membership at the 2013 AGM. Most exciting, CAFCE signed an agreement with Exware Solutions in the spring to access a suite of association management technical solutions that includes a new website, a statistical database, an institution and program database as well as event management software. We’re looking forward to unveiling some of these great resources at the 2013 AGM. Outside of the CAFCE Board, CAFCE members have been hard at work increasing the profile of co-operative education in Canada. Here are a few examples of what you will find inside our annual report: The Co-op Education Week committee secured an IABC Gold Quill Award for their National Co-op Week Social Media contest, the International Committee continues to work on partnerships that will assist CAFCE members with their international initiatives and the PD Committee has an excellent line up for our 2013 AGM in Ottawa. Lastly, all CAFCE committees have seen an increase in membership for 2012/13. Also, please be sure to mark the CAFCE 2014 conference in Niagara Falls on your calendar (June 22

nd to 25

th)!

Thank you to all of our members who work every day to foster and advance post-secondary co-operative education in Canada. Sincerely, Christine Arsenault CAFCE Board of Directors (November 2012-October 2013) Executive:

ACCREDITATION COUNCIL

Rocco Fondacaro – Chair

Mandate: In 1979 the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) established the Accreditation Council. Council members from across Canada articulate and review accreditation criteria for effective Co-operative Education programs as the needs of students, employers and institutions evolve.

The Accreditation Council (AC) met a number of times during the report period, July 29 2012 – August 1, 2013, both live and in conference calls. The live meetings took place in conjunction with CAFCE’s bi-annual Conference, July, 2012 in Whistler, BC and again on February 28, 2013 in Toronto. The AC has implemented conference call meetings to supplement the live meetings due to the large number of applications for accreditation last year. Conference call meetings occurred three times, November 8, 2012, December 12, 2012, and March 23, 2013. The next live meeting will be in conjunction with the AGM in October, 2013 in Ottawa. During the report period, The AC reviewed and/or acknowledged accreditation programs at 12 institutions: British Columbia Institute of Technology, University of British Columbia, Dalhousie University, University of Guelph, Université Laval, Mount Saint Vincent University, University of Prince Edward Island University, University of Regina, Simon Frasier University, University of Victoria, Wilfrid Laurier University, and the University of Windsor. For the remainder of 2013, there are a large number of applications already received or expected from institutions seeking first time or re-accreditation (i.e., with December 2013 expiration dates) including University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Calgary, Langara College, Memorial University, Nova Scotia Community College, Redeemer College, University of Toronto at Scarborough, and the University of Waterloo. The last two years has seen very healthy increases in both institutional interest in and applications for accreditation. This testifies to the growing appreciation and value Canadian institutions attribute to having their co-op programs accredited by CAFCE. The boom in applications does present a challenge for the AC to provide enough review teams to review applications in a timely manner; nevertheless, this is a good challenge to have. Members of the AC continue to engage actively in ongoing analysis and discussion in relation to important issues affecting co-operative education in Canada, including continual evaluation of accreditation criteria particularly in relation to impacts on colleges and smaller universities, and reciprocal program accreditation with provincial associations, specifically in relation to BC’s Association for Cooperative Education. And, in the spirit of continuous improvement, members have generated and posted to the CAFCE website heavily exampled and interactive help guides to enhance and simplify the accreditation application forms and procedure; and they repeated a “how to apply for accreditation” workshop at the 2012 national conference. A significant accomplishment last year was final documentation and website presentation of member survey data exploring “emerging trends and themes” in co-operative and work integrated learning. The AC’s interest and focus on emerging trends has percolated along within the AC for a few years culminating in the outstanding materials recently published on the CAFCE website. The AC’s intent is to continue to explore and update information and perspectives on emerging trends in the WIL industry. In addition, the AC will continue efforts to recognize innovative and best practices identified through the application review process and encourage those practitioners to author Best Practices articles that may be shared publicly with the CAFCE Membership. Finally, going into the 2013/14 reporting year, the following are potential projects and areas of focus for the Accreditation Council:

1. Emerging Trends Survey 2nd

edition. Questionnaire Design, Analysis and Preparation of results for website posting are contributed by AC members and coordination is responsibility for the Chair-elect. This will require administrative support from Managing Matters -- email distribution and database support for membership survey and returns.

2. Repeat the Accreditation Workshop at Niagara, 2014. This session is prepared and presented by small group of AC members. This will require minimal support from Managing Matters as it is prepared and delivered by AC volunteers.

3. Proposal and Scoping exercise concerning creation, coordination and delivery of a defined suite of Accreditations Services. Note…this is a new proposal to be presented for the consideration of the AC representatives at the next Council meeting in October 2013. This will require minimal support from Managing Matters during proposal and scoping.

4. Consideration of proposed increase in Accreditation Application fee. Note… this is a new proposal presented to the Board of Directors which has endorsed for further consideration and investigation by the AC

NFP COMMITTEE Christine Arsenault – Chair

Members: Christine Arsenault, University of Toronto Scarborough (Chair)

Scott Daniels, Mount Saint Vincent University Larry Iles, Thompson Rivers University Kelly Mahoney, University of Manitoba Daniela Attard, Managing Matters This Task Force was formed to align CAFCE’s current by-laws with Canada’s new Not-for-profit Corporations Act. Task force members attended information sessions held by Managing Matters, submitted the required Compliance letter and reviewed the legislation to determine the areas of focus for change. Recommendations were presented to the board and the membership through email and the CAFCE LinkedIn page. Feedback was received and incorporated into the final document that was presented to the membership by the CAFCE By-laws Committee as a motion for the 2013 AGM and as outlined further below. If the motion passes at the 2013 AGM, the Task Force will assist the By-laws Committee with implementation and with finalizing CAFCE’s compliance with the Federal Government. Motion: Whereas, there is new legislation for the Canada Not-for-profit Act which requires all Not-for-Profits to amend their By-Laws in accordance with the new standards set forward; Be it moved that the membership of CAFCE shall adopt the proposed By-Law changes as presented in this document.

Proposed CAFCE By-law Change:

Current CAFCE By-law Reason

Member status

Voting Members: Members are individuals who are employed by co-operative educational institutions; or are co-operative education employers; or are other persons interested in the development of post-secondary co-operative education; or Honorary Members. All members in good standing are voting members. Membership in good standing requires that members have paid their membership fees in full.

Voting Members: An Institutional Member is any organization that participates or wishes to participate in a Co-operative Education Program.

The new Canada Not-for-Profit Charities act dictates that all members must be voting members. It is also important to define members as qualified by paying membership fees.

Additional Board Positions

Addition of 2 new elected Board Members: - College Manager/ Director-at-Large (elected by college members) - University Manager/ Director-at-Large (elected by university members) described as follows: Managers/Directors-at-Large; one designated to college representation and one designated to university representation shall hold responsibility for CAFCE

These positions did not previously exist.

Feedback from College and University members have indicated a desire for “Manager/Director-at-Large” roles that can focus on national advocacy and best practices.

advocacy, committee participation and other duties as may be assigned by the Board.

Elected Board Positions

The following Board of Director roles will be elected by the membership: Regional Representatives (elected by members of their respective regions): - Atlantic Region - Quebec Region - Ontario Region - Manitoba Region (includes Nunavut) - Saskatchewan Region - Alberta Region (includes Northwest Territories) - B.C./Yukon Region

Currently these positions are appointed by the Board.

The new Canada Not-for-Profit Charities act requires that at least two-thirds of the Board must be elected positions. As a result, these Board of Director roles will now be elected by the regions that they represent.

Appointed Board Positions

The following Board of Director role will be appointed to the Board: - Accreditation Council Chair

Currently this role is an “Ex-officio” role on the Board.

The new Canada Not-for-Profit Charities Act does not permit “ex-officio” roles.

CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION WEEK COMMITTEE (March 18-22, 2013)

Kirk Patterson – Chair

Mandate: To coordinate the National Co-operative Education Week during the month of March.

Co-operative Education Week in Canada is both a CAFCE and a national celebration of Co-operative Education where universities and colleges recognize the best of Co-operative Education within their institutions and community for a day or the entire week. Institutions can celebrate by recognizing their “outstanding” co-op student; their “outstanding” co-op employer; and or their own “outstanding” co-op staff member. Due to the unforeseen circumstances involving Kirk’s absence this year the Board decided to make the Social Media Strategy the main focus of our National Co-op Week efforts.

Co-op Week Social Media Contest The 2013 Co-op week Contest was a continued success moving into its’ second year. Feedback from 2012 spurred several contest additions aimed at supporting participating institutions. Growth in all outcomes of the contest, support this initiative as an opportunity to engage students in an innovative and fun manner that highlights CAFCE prominently. Increased volunteer support contributed to a seamless launch and delivery of the week-long contest, although there is much behind the scenes work in the two months that precede Co-op week. The overall success of the National Co-op Week Social Media Contest (2012) resulted in a prestigious Gold Quill Award being awarded to Adam Brayford by the International Association for Business Communicators (IABC) for his orchestration of this successful social media contest. All social media showed increases that ranged from doubling the number of followers in Twitter (245 followers to 600) and Facebook (912 fans to 2000) to exponentially heightened YouTube viewing (24 views to 1,500 views over he contest period). Participation across institutions grew slightly with 44 distinct institutional co-op programs engaging their respective students in the weeks’ activities. A full breakdown of student participation following the contest was provided to each participating institution so as to provide insight in how each respective institution’s students are participating. Feedback from the 2013 contest will continue to shape the contest moving forward to 2014. We would like to see increased participation among our francophone student populations and welcome volunteer support from CAFCE members at any of our member institutions. Anyone with ideas or who would like to be a part of the 2014 Co-op Week Education Committee efforts, please feel free to contact the chair at [email protected] Committee Members: Chair: Kirk Patterson, University of Waterloo Co-op Week Contest Committee Members: Adam Brayford, Simon Fraser University Stuart Billings, Simon Fraser University Marc-Andre Daoust, University of Ottawa Amber Pohl, University of Manitoba Laurie Lahn, Wilfrid Laurier University Jeela Jones, University of Ottawa Meg Durvin, Thompson Rivers University Special Recognition of Co-op student support: Marianna Adamian, Simon Fraser University Ali Huynh, Simon Fraser University

The Emery-Dufault Award was established by CAFCE in 2003 in recognition of the contributions of two of the founding fathers of co-operative education in Canada, Dr. Charles Leslie (Les) Emery and Professor George Joseph Dufault. Les Emery first introduced the idea of co-operative education to Waterloo College Association Faculties, the forerunner of the University of Waterloo. His proposal and subsequent work led to the establishment of the first co-operative education program in Canada. George Dufault set up and headed the department of Co-ordination during its first year (from 1957 to 1958) at Waterloo College Associate Faculties. This was the forerunner of the current Co-operative Education and Career Action department at the University of Waterloo. The Recipients of the CAFCE 2012 CSTOYA:

Mahfuz Mohammed Chowdhury, College CSOTY: A 3

rd year Business Administration –

Marketing Co-op graduate (December 2012) at Sheridan College, Mahfuz completed two work terms with Candybox Marketing. year Computer Science student at the University of Waterloo, Henry completed a work term with Bloomberg Sports in New York City from January to April 2012. Henry performed above and beyond the expectations of a co-op student, receiving high praise for this work from his employer. Henry is passionate about start-up companies, and has had involvement with conferences and personal undertakings that help bring awareness to the importance of start-up companies and their role in co-operative education. Henry has consistently maintained his status as an honours student at Waterloo, often performing at the top of his class. Each year CAFCE recognizes outstanding co-op student achievement from both the college and university level. Co-op offices across Canada celebrated this, and other co-op initiatives, during National Co-operative Education Week, March 18-22, 2013. 32 co-operative education students were nominated for the 2012 awards from a pool of more than 80,000 students studying at 78 CAFCE member institutions across Canada.

Honourable mentions were awarded to Rebekah Parker from the University of British Columbia (Bachelor of Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies), Lisa Steele from Conestoga College (Business Administration – Marketing Advanced Diploma), and Katlyn Taylor from the University of Manitoba (Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences).

To the members of the Co-op Student of the Year Awards Committee (2012/13), who volunteered many hours to read, score, and rank the nominations, my heartfelt thanks for your thoughtful decision-making and support.

CAFCE 2014 CONFERENCE PLANNING COMMITTEE Linda Hart, Kitty Runstedler & Kirk Patterson, Co-Chairs

2014 CAFCE Conference Hosted by Education at Work Ontario www.cafce2014.com

THE CONFERENCE

The conference theme is Co-op Partnerships: the Power of 4, which will highlight co-op relationships between employers, students, institutions and associations. OBJECTIVE

To bring together co-op professionals to foster growth in co-operative education

To offer a student based component to this event

To develop a special employer session combined with an Exhibitor Showcase

To plan a national conference that generates revenue for both CAFCE and EWO

To potentially partner with CACEE for a Joint day

To kindle the spirit of Volunteerism. CONFERENCE DATES:

It was important to ensure that the conference did not interfere with campus recruitment dates: mid May to mid June. Mid to late August was also not considered due to fall term preparations. Several dates were reviewed and the conference date of June 22

nd to 25

th, 2014 was decided. The preference for

June 22nd

to 25th was selected to promote maximum participation for delegates wishing to extend their stay leading up

to the long weekend. It was thought that the June dates would appeal to families as well to end off the school year. LOCATION AND VENUE:

EWO’s original thought was to have the conference in the Waterloo Region and showcase the partnerships at the four local institutions: University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Guelph and Conestoga College ITAL, but member feedback emphasized a desire for a higher profile “destination” location. Several locations were reviewed including Blue Mountain and Niagara Falls. Blue Mountain was not chosen as the Co-chairs felt it was too similar to Whistler only much less grander and there would be considerable transportation barriers in getting the delegates to Blue Mountain. In 2008, EWO co-hosted a very well attended conference in Niagara Falls with only 9 months to plan, and it was thought that a conference there in 2014 would have more advantages over the notion of not repeating at the same location within a six year span. Niagara Falls is central to several international airports and would appeal and be more cost effective to attract delegates from co-operative education associations in the USA and internationally. This location will also attract potential delegates from the high number of institutions in Southwestern Ontario. Over 65% of EWO’s member institutions are within a 2 hour drive of Niagara Falls. There is also a desire by the Co-chairs to involve co-op students as volunteers at the event; therefore, a central location with a co-op student population would more effectively facilitate this option. In addition, Niagara Falls would have a greater appeal to delegates wishing to bring their families and possibly extend their stay as mentioned above in the preferred dates.

There will be a silent auction keeping with a similar request to what was done in Whistler with a solicitation of items in value of $50 or more.

PROGRAM

A draft schedule has been prepared that includes optional activities on Sunday that include golfing or a tour (additional fees). Four keynote speakers have been confirmed and a fifth speaker is being considered who would add some diversity. Based on feedback from Whistler, concurrent sessions will be a minimum of 60 minutes. The conference will kick-off with Stuart Knight, “Conversations of a Leader” as the keynote. Stuart will conclude his morning keynote address with an organized networking activity that will set the tone for the conference. TRANSPORTATION

Transportation is available by air, rail (Via Rail and Amtrak), bus and car for the delegates travelling.

Airport Information

International airports serving Niagara Falls, Canada:

Buffalo Niagara International Airport - 19.8 miles, 30 mins

Hamilton International Airport - 85.1 km, 1 hour

Toronto Pearson International Airport – 125 km, 1 hour 30 mins

All airports listed are served by Niagara Airbus, who has provided discount rates for conference attendees. SOCIAL / PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION

All conference activities will be held on site at the Sheraton. The President’s Reception will be hosted by the University of Waterloo on Sunday; the conference dinner will be on Monday and Tuesday evening the University of Guelph will host a hospitality reception with entertainment and social to follow at the private “Hard Rock” club located at the conference centre. Entertainment has been booked and delegates/guests who are musicians will be invited to “Jam with Brad”. EXHIBITOR SHOWCASE

An exhibitor showcase is planned. The venue has a ballroom big enough to hold booths within the main ballroom at the opposite end from the main meeting area with seating capacity to include exhibitors for lunch and give access to keynote speakers. There is a divider that can be closed if necessary to hold a member exclusive meeting. The

In conjunction with EWO and CAFCE members, the planning committee reviewed the option to dovetail the conference with CACEE. Both associations were very interested, but after discussions, it was determined that there was not sufficient time to work out the financial and venue considerations. It is recommended that future conference planning committees work with CACEE to identify future opportunities to partner.

INTERNATIONAL CO-OP COMMITTEE Karima Ramji, Chair

The international Committee functions as a working committee to coordinate international CAFCE initiatives that support the mobility of Co-operative Education students abroad and in the U.S. In 2012, the committee resolved to shift from committee based operations to developing projects related to international co-operative education. The committee also decided to delve into the area of supporting international students in co-operative education. 12 new members were recruited in July 2013 to the International committee to assist with initiatives related to the latter. In April 2013, CAFCE members were presented a no-cost opportunity to participate in the ACEN (Australian Collaborative Education Network) and NZACE (New Zealand Association for Cooperative Education) Work Integrated Learning (WIL)/Cooperative Education International Webinar entitled “Connecting practitioners from Australia, New Zealand and Canada”. This is in keeping with our goal of collaborating with our peer organizations in other countries as well as in Canada (i.e. WACE, ACEN, NZACE, CBIE, and others). In addition, the following initiatives continued into or commenced in 2012/2013:

1. Creating International listserve for CAFCE members via LinkedIn or other means 2. Developing a partnership with an insurance provider to obtain preferred rates for students from CAFCE

member organizations going on international work terms – this is modeled around the Cultural Vistas partnership

3. Developing a proposal for a mobility scholarship for students going on international work terms 4. Developing resources to support international students in Co-operative Education: understanding the Canadian

workplace; preparing for the Canadian workplace, and logistical issues related to working in Canada 5. Developing website content to support student mobility and international students

The committee had three full group meetings (February, May and July 2013). Various committee members have also met several times to further our project goals. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE Stuart Billings – Chair

Mandate: To maintain existing members. Attract new members. Communicate the value of membership. Review the current membership fee structure.

Institutional Members

Membership amongst institutional members continues to show a strong level of involvement, nation-wide.

Employer Members

Building on a cumulative effort in recent years toward initiatives designed to foster relationships with employers, the committee anticipates the commencement of selective recruitment of employer members in the Fall 2013. Employer members will be integrated into CAFCE to leverage their unique perspective within CAFCE, in addition to providing them with pertinent co-op insights and information that will foster a new level of collaboration within CAFCE. Two different membership categories are to be incorporated, a Regular Employer membership, in addition to an Elite Employer membership. Through the new Elite Employer membership, employers will engage in value-added ways to engage with members including, but not limited to, offering informative organizational webinars to members, first opportunity to sponsor professional development offerings, as well as recognition on the CAFCE website. The two employer membership categories will provide for different needs and budgets with all valued industry partners.

Students

In a continued effort to introduce CAFCE to students, the Co-op Week contest was renewed. A more seamless and heightened level of participation bolstered the presence of CAFCE amongst students and their existing networks. Efforts will continue to be taken to make CAFCE relevant to students and engage them in meaningful ways

Membership Fee Structure

In order to maintain a reasonable membership fee rate, the Membership committee has been focusing on other sources of revenue.

NOMINATION AND AWARDS COMMITTEE Norah McRae – Chair

Mandate: To evaluate nominations and award the CAFCE Albert S. Barber, Dr. Graham Branton Research, and Service Awards, and facilitate the annual elections of the Executive to the Board of Directors. Members are appointed. The Nomination and Awards Committee had the pleasure of reviewing nominations for these awards. This year’s winners are: THE ALBERT S. BARBER AWARD RECIPIENT – No Award presented this year. The Albert S. Barber Award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions made to the philosophy and practice of co-operative education in Canada. This award is sponsored by the University of Waterloo. DR. GRAHAM BRANTON RESEARCH AWARD – Dr. Jeela Jones, University of Ottawa. The Dr. Graham Branton Research Award was instituted in 1989 to recognize significant contributions by CAFCE members to scholarly research in Co-operative Education and to encourage such research. The award was re-named the Dr. Graham Branton Research Award in 1996, in his memory. This award is sponsored by the University of Victoria. The following is an excerpt from the nomination application that was submitted for Dr. Jones that speaks to her qualifications for this award. “Please accept this letter as a recommendation for Dr. Jeela Jones for the Dr. Graham Branton Research Award. In light of her recently defended Ph.D. thesis entitled “Anglers, Warriors, and Acrobats: The Journey of Learning in Cooperative Education,” we feel that she is a worthy candidate for this esteemed CAFCE award. During the 8 or 9 years we have intersected with her in a variety of Co-operative Education for a, we have been impressed by her enthusiasm, her insight, her sense of humor and her courage. She is currently the President-Elect of CAFCE and has served in various capacities too numerous to list, although perhaps the most important with respect to the Dr. Graham Branton Research Award is that she was the Founding Chair of the CAFCE research committee. Furthermore, she also sat as a reviewer for the CEIA Journal. In 2012, she staged “Theatre Presentation: Seeing Co-operative Education: A Readers Theatre.” at the national CAFCE conference in Whistler, engaging a number of Co-operative Education practitioners as voices in her drama. The stage presentation was much enjoyed and proclaimed as one of the highlights of the conference through the feedback collected. Not only that, the reader`s theatre sparked a great deal of discussion around the individualization of students. Her Ph.D. thesis builds on these discoveries and focuses especially on the experiences of students before they go out on their first work terms. The early stages of Co-operative Education students’ involvement and the expectations they have of their professional development training/seminars colours their future world of work. Her thesis examined this under-researched area of Co-operative Education using qualitative methods to arrive at a narrative of the Co-operative Education process. She organized her insights around 5 metaphoric themes (a) journey (b) circus (c) metamorphosing (d) anglers at sea (e) warriors. In addition to her Ph.D. thesis, Jeela has had two articles published with the CEIA journal and one with the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (ISTLHE) which are derived from her Master’s research. Taken as a whole, Jeela’s Ph.D. opens up whole new areas for research and investigation. Many of us have noted Jeela’s immediate willingness to mentor ‘up and coming’ Co-operative Education practitioners in the disciple of research, and this is a major contribution she has given and continues to give. For all these reasons we believe that Jeela would be a worthy recipient of the Dr. Graham Branton research award. She is one of the few Canadian researcher/practitioners who have blazed a trail for others to follow.” CAFCE SERVICE AWARD – Linda Hart, Formerly University of Guelph The Service Award was instituted in 1989 to recognize meritorious service to the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education by its members. The following is an excerpt from one of the letters in the nomination application for Ms. Hart that speaks to her many years of service to CAFCE.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOMENT Co-op Certificate COMMITTEE

Kelly Mahoney – Chair

Mandate: The Committee is working to develop a Certificate in Co-operative Education which will entail specific professional development courses delivered on line and in person and that will provide quality standards and training to co-op practitioners. The Committee has met on several occasions via teleconference and had a full day in-person meeting on June 17, 2013 in Toronto. Tasks completed or initiated to date include extensive research of other association offerings, identifying core competencies required for success as co-op professionals – including differing levels of competencies required to function from entry to senior level - and developing a broad framework for implementation. Over the next year, we hope to develop the first curriculum offerings to be launched in conjunction with the CAFCE 2014 Conference. We will be seeking additional external funding for curriculum development and implementation and will be asking for input from the membership, including senior co-op leadership, to help identify key target areas for training and development, in order to ensure the Certificate provides value to individuals working in the field of co-operative education. We are actively seeking additional members to join the committee, including welcoming Committee members from the College programs. Members with experience in curriculum development or in grant proposal writing would be a huge asset. Please contact me directly if you have an interest in learning more or would like to join the Committee. 2012-2013 Committee Members Jeela Jones, University of Ottawa Julie Walchli, University of British Columbia Larry Iles, Thompson Rivers University Kelly Mahoney, University of Manitoba I would like to thank the 2012 – 2013 Committee for their energy, insight and contributions to the Co-operative Education Certificate Committee this year.

communication and have since been very successful. Furthermore, this has resulted in significant cost savings for the committee. Document-sharing: The Research Committee continues to use Dropbox, where members can upload documents onto a “cloud” and can be accessed anywhere. The committee has found this technology to be especially useful when travelling and freeing space on one’s PC. Moreover, this tool will be useful in succession planning and continuity of the committee in the future.

Membership:

The Research Committee was pleased to officially welcome Dr. Maureen Drysdale (University of Waterloo) who brings a wealth of knowledge to the committee and who is also currently chairing the WACE Research Committee last August. HEQCO: The Research Committee has spent a significant amount of time discussing the results of the recent report (Fall 2012) on work-integrated learning from the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario and its implications for co-operative education. Discussions have taken place with Richard Wiggers for future research considerations. The Research Committee also submitted a presentation proposal for the 2013 HEQCO Conference in November; however, their proposal was not accepted.

CAFCE 2014-Niagara:

The Research Committee hopes to repeat the success of its open research discussion with members from the national and regional research committees once more in Niagara. An invitation will be extended to all regional research committees. Furthermore, the Research Committee has been offered a session at the Conference to report on recent co-op research in Canada. It is our hope that one or more past research grant recipients will be able to present their findings.

Succession Planning:

At the time, the Research Committee is yet to secure a Chair for the upcoming year. Several members have expressed some interest; however, both Charlene and Peter will be stepping down in September.

Goals for the upcoming year:

To generate relevant data that supports the advancement of co-operative education in Canada through the use of the national database.

To support CAFCE’s involvement in the new version of the CEIA journal and encourage regular publications from its members.

To promote the development of research that directly ties to the CAFCE strategic directives.

To have a strong research presence at the 2014 CAFCE National Conference.

To encourage more regional approaches to co-op research development.

To serve as mentors and research champions for all CAFCE members.

Secure future funding for the research grant.

Continue growing the online presence of the research committee to enhance the CAFCE brand.

Enable and foster co-op research in Canada.

Other updates/topics for discussion for the Board:

CAFCE Atlantic AMG and Professional Development (PD): CAFCE Atlantic hosted a noon hour Annual General Meeting (AGM) on July 4, 2013. CAFCE Atlantic is also hosting a two-day professional development event on October 23 and 24, 2013 in Moncton, NB. The PD event integrated the CAFCE National AGM and PD event into the agenda. The event also consisted of four professional sessions and social activities. CAFCE Atlantic Research Committee: A CAFCE Atlantic Research Committee was formed during the 2011 CAFCE Atlantic AGM. The committee members were solidified and the Terms of Reference were approved during the 2012 CAFCE Atlantic AGM. The CAFCE Atlantic Research Committee is partnering with Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission (MPHEC) to explore the impact of co-operative education for recent grads through a grad survey. In particular, the Research Committee is exploring the following points:

How does co-op experience contribute to graduates finding work in their field and in turn contribute to the local economy? (Government impact)

How does co-op experience contribute to engagement and retention at the post-secondary level? (Institutional impact)

How does co-op experience lead to graduates securing work with supporting employers? (Employer Impact)

The Research Committee is comprised of the following members:

Sherrie Myers, Memorial University of Newfoundland (Co-chair)

Michelle Larsen, Acadia University (Co-chair)

Erin Gillespie, University of New Brunswick (Saint John)

Government Relations: Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education developed a new policy which came into effect on August 1, 2013 which required all employers who hire a foreign worker to complete an application form and register with Labour Standards each time they hire a foreign worker. This new policy would have a significant impact on international co-op students, and employers who hire international students. The policy would create another roadblock for international students looking to find work in Canada. Directors and managers from most Nova Scotia co-op offices met with government representatives on August 7, 2013 to discuss this new policy and the negative impacts it would have for international students. On August 13, 2013, Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education confirmed that the following groups would be exempt from this policy effective immediately:

International students with a valid work permit to participate in work integrated and experiential learning programs (i.e. co-op placements, internships, practicums)

International students who are permitted to work on campus without a work permit

International students with a valid off-campus work permit Co-op Vignettes: CAFCE Atlantic submitted a proposal to Nova Scotia Economic & Rural Development and Tourism for funds to hire Global TV in Halifax, NS to produce co-op vignettes which would be aired on Global TV. These vignettes would promote the value of co-operative education to prospective employers and students. Nova Scotia Economic & Rural Development and Tourism awarded $15,000 to CAFCE Atlantic which covered the expenses to produce three TV ads. After gathering co-op stories from co-op programs throughout Nova Scotia, three stories were selected and Global TV produced these TV ads during the summer months. The TV ads will be aired in fall 2013. New CAFCE Atlantic Website: CAFCE Atlantic launched a new website on August 21, 2013. The new website URL is www.cafceatlantic.com. The former CAFCE Atlantic website was directed towards CAFCE Atlantic members only. The new website is geared to all three main stakeholder groups - members, employers and students.

BRITISH COLUMBIA/YUKON REGIONAL REPORT

Julie Walchli – CAFCE Board Director & Regional Representative

2012/13 was a banner year for the Association for Co-operative Education BC/Yukon as a result of the energy and commitment of our members across the province. A few highlights include:

New ACE web site and brand identity: The Communications Committee and Web Enhancement Committee, supported by SFU Communications Student Marianna Adamian (whom ACE employed), launched a new ACE web site with a new ACE logo and colour scheme, and improved functionality for employers and members.

BC Co-op Tax Credit: For several years ACE members, primarily through Accountability Council for Co-operative Education BC (ACCE) and ACE External Relations, have lobbied the BC government, opposition parties, and industry associations to support a BC Co-op Tax credit for small and medium sized businesses, modeled on a similar tax credit in 4 other provinces including Manitoba and Ontario We were delighted to see both the BC Liberals and the BC NDP include this as part of their platforms for the 2013 election campaign. We look forward to working with the new provincial government to take this idea from pledge to reality.

BC Arts Council Funding: For the past 2 years ACCE and External Relations have advocated for the value of the BC Arts Council’s dedicated co-op funding, meeting with the Council’s Executive Director, providing data and stories to substantiate the value of this funding, and lobbying MLAs and the Premier to renew this funding. We were delighted to see a third year of the funding announced earlier this year.

Program Approval/Accreditation: ACCE has continued to provide support for member institutions to achieve either CAFCE accreditation or ACCE approval, and is on track for reaching the goal of having all institutions in BC approved this year. They have also asked the CAFCE Accreditation Council to consider reciprocal approval of ACCE approved programs, something which will be discussed in October 2013.

Partnerships with BC HRMA and BCTIA: Our Communications and External Relations Committees have worked together on ways to partner further with these 2 industry associations. The results include 2 stories about co-op in the BC HRMA online blog this spring, and BCTIA supporting the tax credit model in their strategic plan.

Professional Development Activities: the PD Committee put on a successful event on November 20, 2012 titled “Using Technology to our Greatest Advantage.” 63 members from across the province attended. They are also worked with the SFU planning committee on the ACE Symposium event, which was held on May 27 and 28 in Vancouver and was sold out, with over 100 ACE members from across BC attending. The event explored the impact that mobile, social and other digital media will continue to have on the employer-school-student relationship in years to come. Keynote was given by David Spector from TMP Worldwide.

Scholarship about Co-op: The Research Committee’s work on Co-operative Education and Student Engagement was published in the CEIA Journal in December 2012, and other related articles appeared in Experience Magazine and the ACE Online Newsletter. The Committee was honoured to receive the CAFCE Graham Branton Award to recognize its contributions to scholarly research about co-operative education at the CAFCE 2012 conference.

It’s a privilege to serve with the many talented and dedicated volunteers on the ACE Board to support the important work of Co-operative Education that our members do across BC. MANITOBA REGIONAL REPORT Kelly Mahoney – CAFCE Board Director & Regional Representative

Co-op continues to grow in Manitoba! University of Manitoba The University of Manitoba has embarked on a new focus this past year – to expand and enhance opportunities for students to engage in experiential education activities. The U of M participated in the World Association for Co-operative Education’s (WACE) Institute on Global and Experiential Learning held in July 2012 in Cape Ann, Massachusetts. The outcome was a keen and focused interest on developing an action plan to begin expansion of student opportunities across four key areas; international exchange, undergraduate research, co-op and internships and service learning. The University has recently joined WACE as an institutional member, and sent delegates to WACE’s Assessment Institute in Miami in March 2013 and to the WACE conference in Durban, South Africa in June 2013. Our goal is to provide students with the opportunity to engage in learning that will have a transformative impact on their studies and their lifelong choices. The Science Co-op Program at U of M continues to expand its co-op offerings with a new program in Statistics. In addition, The U of M selected Biological Sciences student, Katlyn Taylor, to represent the institution in CAFCE’s Co-op Student of the Year Award and we were proud to see Katlyn receive an Honorable Mention. The U of M actively participated in CAFCE’s National Co-op week which coincided with the selection of the the 2012 University of Manitoba Co-operative Education Student Champion Award, which recognizes students who show outstanding personal and professional development. Marissa Borgford, a fourth-year student in the environmental studies honours co-op program in the Clayton H Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources was selected as this year’s outstanding co-op student. The I.H. Asper School of Business Co-op Program has recently become accredited by CAFCE. The Computer Science Co-op Program at U of M recently had its highest number of co-op placements and has introduced a Master’s of Computer Science Co-op option. University of Winnipeg As of September 2013, the Co-operative Education Program at UWinnipeg now has a for-credit option. With the for-credit version of Co-op, we are offering 3 academic credits per work term. Students are required to pay for the 3 credit hour tuition fee ($322.50 at UWinnipeg) on top of the Co-op Fee Cost ($406.35). We are still offering a non-credit version of Co-op. If a student chooses the non-credit version, they just have to pay the Co-op Fee. We have also opened the program up to include all undergrad students (previously just the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Business & Economics has the co-op option). Our number of students participating in the Program has increased 58% from the summer of 2012 to the summer of 2013.

ALBERTA REGIONAL REPORT Jasminn Berteotti – CAFCE Board Director & Regional Representative

I am pleased to report that in Alberta we are presently working toward establishing stronger connections between CAFCE members and institutions. A first meeting was arranged in Calgary for June 2013 that included representatives from five of the seven member institutions. Sadly, due to the devastating floods in Calgary and Southern Alberta on that same day, the meeting was adjourned early. At the second meeting via teleconference on August 22, 2013 it was decided to initiate a working group made up of representatives from each CAFCE institution within Alberta. The main priority for this particular group will be to work together to lobby the Alberta Government to initiate a tax credit for Co-op employers. Future plans include a survey of Alberta Co-op Practitioners, joint marketing campaigns, and some potential for future PD opportunities. With recent activities, 2013/2014 promises to be a busy and productive year! Institution Updates University of Lethbridge
