Greetings from Rogers State and welcome to the fourth year of Hillcat Golf.

Last season marked a first in the two programs’ young history as the men’s team ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Preseason Coaches’ Pollat No. 18. The RSU women received votes in the coaches’ poll for the first time and won its first ever team tournament title.

Coach Lynn Blevins has been instrumental in the development of the program since its inception in 2009. The success the programshave achieved has been impressive and this season should continue in that success.

This all wouldn’t be possible without the partnerships with local golf courses, golf professionals and community sponsors like you.Thank you for your support and interest of these fledging golf programs.

Ryan Bradley

Athletic DirectorRogers State University

Welcome to another exciting season of Hillcat golf!

As Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past 10 years, RSU has enjoyed dynamic growth across itsentire enterprise, such as:

• Increasing its student population by 60 percent while still maintaining a personalized attention to service that’s become RSU’s hallmark;

• Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry;• Constructing two student apartment communities to provide the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university;

• Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and • Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service.

RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In onlya few short years, our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connectionto the community. The university has invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation at Soldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus.

We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4million renovations of the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, butalso represents their investment in the quality of life at Rogers State.

As the RSU begins its first year as a NCAA Division II candidate, this season marks our last as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) andthe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations have placed on promotinghealthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values for RSU’sprograms, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes.

We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great season on the pitch. Go Hillcats!

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earningRSU the title of Oklahoma's fastest-growing regional university

A dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academicprograms, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residen-tial university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technol-ogy, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studiesthrough RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence inits nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a majoraccomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with pri-vate, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earncollege credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders andpolicymakers. A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters andsons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first buildingon the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy(OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, bothin military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during WorldWar II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior col-lege grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted avariety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiateathletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accredita-tion as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaureate level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs tomore than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, Pryor and online.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat ath-letes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides aca-demic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to workwith tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes growinto responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their educationand their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all ath-letes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU intro-duces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfallsand giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFEprograms:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athleteis given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are givenexamples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes aboutthe existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will leadto more careful decision making.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletesare given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warnedagainst gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of CharacterThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program isdesigned to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for stu-dent-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issuesmore comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reacheshundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in NorthAmerica and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions ofCharacter program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIAChampions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environmentsthat promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

“I’m really excited to get back intocoaching,” Blevins said upon hisannouncement. “It’s a rare opportuni-ty to start a new program and put afootprint or a signature on that pro-gram. I’m really looking forward tothe challenge.”

Blevins served as the Director of GolfOperations at Scissortail Golf Club inVerdigris, Okla. from 2008-2010. AsPresident and CEO of the Buffalo GolfGroup, Inc., Blevins has overseen the construc-tion, start up and management operation offive golf courses over the past 15 years.

The building of a program requires steps to be taken, some small and others larger. Last season Rogers Statetook one of those steps, a step into the NAIA Men’s GolfCoaches’ Top 25 Poll. This year coach Lynn Blevins looksto take another step this time into the national tourna-ment.

“We just keep getting better and taking the next step asa growing program,” Blevins spoke of the fourth yearHillcats’ growth as a program. “I’m really excited and Ithink we can have a real impact and havea legitimate shot at going to thenational tournament.”

In the school’s final year in theNAIA the Hillcats must still facesome of the top teams in thenation week in and week outwith the area full of great teams.Blevins believes his men’s golf teamcan make a really strong push with amixture of talented returns and excit-ing newcomers.

ReturnersTanner Owens returns for his final season onthe Hill and will be a leader for coach Blevins’squad.

“Tanner is a senior that has a chance, I think, tobe one of the top players in the conference thisyear if he plays to his ability,” Blevins said of thefour-year Hillcat. “He worked at the Patriot GolfClub this summer and had the opportunity toreally work on his golf game. Probably the bestsummer he’s had as far as that and I’m lookingfor a lot out of Tanner in leadership.”

Owens led the team a year ago with an averagescore of 74.70 an average of just 3.44 above parincluding a low round of 68. In 27 rounds of golf, the Ft. Gibson, Okla. native shot par or betterseven times. He claimed the second individualmedalist honors of his Hillcat career win-ning the Sen. Bartley struggledat times late in the fall and early spring as he played injust five tournaments shooting an average score of 4.79above par over the course of the season.

“Hopefully Preston will step up and play like he’s capa-ble of all year and be focused and realize that this is kindof the last hurrah and will step it up a little,” Blevins said

of the Oklahoma Wesleyan transfer in his secondyear with the Cats.

Trevor Williams and Mark Healy return as wellafter redshirting last season.

NewcomersSix freshmen join the Hillcats this sea-son and look to make the RSU fresh-man class one of the top ten in thenation for the second consecutiveyear. Blevins believes this year’sgroup of newcomers has thepotential.

“We have a slew of freshman andthey’re all good. They all have thepotential to make an impact not justwith our team but in our conferenceright away,” the Hillcats head coachsaid of the six rookies. “If some ofthese kids blossom the way I thinkthey can I think we’ll surprise a lotof people.”

Blevins understands there will be growingpains for the young players, but is alreadyencouraged with the preseason efforts.

“The competition already is making them somuch better. We haven’t been this deep onthe men’s side and practice is more intenseand the competition is more intense whichwill only make us better.”

Nordahl, a native of Bergen, Norway, was the top fresh-man for the Cats a year ago as she averaged 11 overpar. She played in all ten tournaments for RSU with abest finish of second place at the MACU Tournament. This season she will be looked to as a leader for coachBlevins’ squad.

NewcomersFive freshmen and a redshirt soph-omore will come to the Hill givingthe Hillcats its most depth in fouryears.“We have a lot more depth andwe’ll be a lot more competitivebecause of that depth. All of ourgirls are capable of shooting andbreaking 80,” explained Blevins ofthis year’s team.

u Coach Blevins looks for Chelsea Burney to make a big impact as a freshman.

“Addie Guthrie and Paige DeLozier have a lot of potentialand a lot of upside,” said Blevins in discussing his othertwo newcomers. “It wouldn’t surprise me that if by springthey’re capable of making the line up in the top five.”

Guthrie helped lead Poteau (Okla.) High School to threeconsecutive state tournament appearances including astate title last year. DeLozier helped Collinsville (Okla.)High School to a state tournament in 2010 her seniorseason with the Cardinals.

ScheduleThe nine-tournament regular season schedule consists offive trips outside state lines including the season openerat Hawks Creek Golf Club at the Northwood Universityand Texas Wesleyan University hosted Hawks Creek FallInvitational starting September 10-11 in Fort Worth,Texas.

Thefall schedule will wrap up at the Lady Reddie Invitationalhosted by Henderson State.

“We’re lucky that there are so many good golf teams inthis region. The Hawks Creek is hosted by Northwoodand Texas Wesleyan. NSU and Henderson will have astrong field of NCAA Division II teams. Oklahoma City’stournament always has a good, strong field. We’re play-ing some really tough competition which will serve uswell for the spring as we lead up to the conference tour-nament,” said Blevins.

The season will conclude with the Sooner AthleticConference Tournament April 15-16 with a berth to theNAIA National Tournament on the line. Blevins believesthe regular season slate will prepare the Cats for a post-season push.

Fear the ClawNot long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball wasintroduced at RSU, the home court at the ClaremoreExpo Center quickly gained a reputation as a formidablevenue for opponents.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herselfon the free throw line, the crowd at the Expo Centerextends one arm skyward and makes the sign of the clawwith their fists.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the mannerof the scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a freethrow, the rowdy RSU student section has been knownto intimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’sfortitude, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

Homecoming WeekThe university celebrated the first-ever Homecoming dur-ing the first week of November 2007, during the firstHillcat men’s and women’s basketball games.

At RSU, Homecoming is a campus-wide tradition.

A bonfire is typically held the night before the big gamesin the open area west of the University Village B studentapartments.

A campus office decoration competition is held duringHomecoming Week, in which students and staff mem-bers compete to show their Hillcat pride.

The Hillcat Hacker Invitational is a fun-filled golf eventplayed amidst the hazards of Rogers State University’sscenic Claremore campus. The game features specialnondestructive golf balls and is designed for pros, ama-teurs and hackers alike. The goal of this event is to gen-erate camaraderie among the university’s friends andalumni, showcase RSU’s beautiful and historic campusand establish an outstanding Hillcat Homecoming tradi-tion.

The Slam Dunk Contest and 3-point Shootout hasbecome a yearly tradition held on the Thursday ofHomecoming Week. The Homecoming Tailgate Party, held outside of the Claremore Expo Center, is one of themost popular Homecoming events for students, alumni, and the community. “I have always dreamed of being a doctor, where I can help people and make a dierence in their lives. RSU is giving me the chance to earn a bachelor’s degree that is perfect for pursuing medical school, while I can be active with campus organizations. rough RSU, I was able to get a summer internship with Grand River Dam Authority that gave me valuable real-world experience. It all adds up to make RSU the university I always wanted to attend.”
