Appalachian Athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, ad-ministrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to the high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student.

Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institutional loyalty.  The Department of Athletics is commit-ted to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters.  The intercollegiate athlete representing App State is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor.

Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented popula-tions through its athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies.  The University’s policy of non-discrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative.        The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA.  The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division.

A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni and the institution itself.  Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favor-able public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.

Appalachian State Mountaineers

2012-13 | Appalachian State Men’s and Women’s Golf6

The 2012-13 season marks Bill Dicus’ 21st year at Appalachian State University and his 19th at the helm of the men’s golf program.

The 2011-12 campaign was a breakout season for the quickly maturing Mountaineers, as the squad wrapped up a sixth-place finish at the Southern Conference Tournament and won two other competitions.

Dicus’ squad fired a school-record 273 in the final round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate to take over first place and notch the team championship. The solid play carried over to the spring, when the Mountaineers dominated the Harmony Spring Break Match Play with a 290-300=590 (+14) to take the top qualifying spot. Appalachian then dispatched Nyack College, 5-0, in the match play final.

App State’s sixth-place finish at the SoCon Tournament was the program’s best since taking fourth place in 2001.

Along with the team titles, several individuals left their mark on the program’s history as well as with the SoCon and other tournaments throughout the year.

Casey Komline posted the program’s second-best single season stroke average and earned all-conference honors, while taking home a team-best six top-15 finishes in 2011-12. His career 74.51 stroke average would rank first in App State history if he qualified with one more round played.

Josh Nichols currently shares the top spot with Casey Johnson at 74.86 and is one of four golfers from the 2011-12 team to find his name on App State’s career list (Darren Cook, Lance Wheeler and Dustin Hudson all rank in the top 10 as well).

With a young squad in 2010-11, Dicus’ team surpassed its modest expectations in what was thought to be a rebuilding year.

In March, sophomore Nichols matched a program record with a 65 in the opening round of the Don Benbow/North-South Invitational to grab a commanding lead and led the Apps to their first tournament title since 2002-03 with a 36-hole tally of 585 (+17). Nichols cruised to a five-stroke individual win at the event, while Daniel Walsh tied for third place and two others notched top-20 finishes as well.

That tournament was App State’s third-straight top-10 finish in the spring as a mix of veterans and newcomers combined for a 301.3 stroke average on the season, the third-best in program history.

Then-freshman Komline made a splash in his rookie year, ranking third on the team with a 75.81 stroke average in 16 rounds to go along with a pair of top-10 finishes.

In 2009-10, the head coach saw his hard work pay off as senior Casey Johnson won the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate and later placed second at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. The senior graduated as one of the top golfers in the Southern Conference and one of the best in App State history.

Johnson graduated with four of the five lowest single-round scores in program history, as well as the best 54-hole tournament score (207). His stroke average is also the best in App State history, at 74.79 spread over 112 rounds. (He narrowly edges Bern Gregory’s mark of 74.90.)

The Apps placed in the top-10 in eight out of 11 tournaments for the season, including a third-place finish at the Mission Inn Intercollegiate. App State’s 298.79 team stroke average in 2009-10 stands as the second-best in program history, behind only 2000-01’s 298.12.

In 2008, Dicus led the team to a season-best finish of fifth place at the North-South Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla.

During his tenure with the men’s team, Appalachian has finished as high as fourth (in 2001) in the Southern Conference, one of college golf’s most prestigious conferences.

Dicus led Bern Gregory onto the all-conference team in 2000 and also led the team to fourth place in 2001 in the Southern Conference.

While at Appalachian, he also coached the women’s team for fifteen seasons. The Mountaineers placed second in the SoCon three times, placing behind only national-power Furman.

Dicus also coached the league’s Freshman of the Year, Kelly Clements, in 1996. Dicus mentored two All Conference performers, Merryll McElwain (1994-96) and Brittany Winterton (1997). He led the Mountaineers to consecutive sixth-place showings in the very competitive SoCon Championship in 2006 and ‘07, the Apps’ best finish since 2003.

A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Dicus is a class A member of the Professional Golfers’ Associtation of America. He received a Bachelor of Science from Campbell University and has done post-graduate work at Appalachian.

In addition to his duties at App State, Dicus serves as a golf professional at Linville Ridge Country Club in Linville, N.C., one of the premier courses in North Carolina. The Dicus family is heavily involved in charity work throughout the High Country, as well.

Dicus and his wife, Pepe, reside in Boone.

Appalachian State Mountaineers

2012-13 | Appalachian State Men’s and Women’s Golf14

Heather Brown begins her fifth season at the helm of Appalachian State University women’s golf in 2012-13 after leading the team to unprecedented success over the past three seasons.

Brown’s Mountaineers exceeded all expectations in 2011-12, as the squad claimed a pair of tournament titles and went on to take fifth place at the Southern Con-ference Tournament.

A trio of juniors led the way for most of the season as Lauren Smith and Yue Xu each picked up tournament wins and Rumbidzai Masamvu captured eight top-10 finishes on the season, including sixth place at the league championship.

ASU cruised to a championship in just the second competition of the spring at the Dayton Hilton Head Invitational. Less than a month later, Brown’s team then repeated as Low Country Intercollegiate champions in a large 15-team field.

ASU’s fifth-place finish in the Southern Conference is the highest since placing fourth in 2002. For the week, ASU was just five strokes out of third place, and a mere one stroke behind fourth.

A rapidly-maturing team took giant steps in 2010-11, as the Mountaineers claimed their first team title since February 2004 at the Low Country Intercollegiate in March. Three sophomores earned the event’s top finishes, as Yue Xu carded a 147 (+3) to earn her second-career title while Kristina Boo and Rumbidzai Masamvu took the second and third places, respectively.

The Apps notched five top-three team finishes in nine tournaments on the season and posted the lowest team score in program history (313.14) for a second-straight year.

In a season full of team and individual accomplishments, Xu became the first all-SoCon honoree since 2006, Kristina Boo took over the career stroke average lead at ASU with a 79.26 and four different players combined for 21 top-20 finishes on the season.

In 2009-10, senior Brooke Dehart and four freshmen recorded a pair of second-place finishes, at the Campbell Fighting Camel Classic as well as the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate. It marked the first time that the Apps placed second or better twice in a season since 2001-02.

Newcomer Yue Xu then single-handedly rewrote the record books with her performance at the Southern Conference Tournament. The freshman became the first ASU woman to win the event, with a three-stroke victory, which earned her freshman all-SoCon honors. Under Brown’s tutelage, Xu set ASU’s single-round record (69) and 54-hole record (69-72-76=217) at the SoCon Championship and the single-season stroke average at 75.6 (previously 77.8).

All told, Xu placed in the top-10 in all six spring tournaments in 2010. Brown’s solid recruiting efforts began to pay off with team depth, as fellow newcomers Rumbidzai Masamvu (79.3) and Kristina Boo (80.4) ranked second and third on the team in stroke average for the season.

In her first season at the helm, Brown’s Mountaineers posted four top-10 team finishes, including fourth place as the host team at the Mimosa Hills Women’s Intercollegiate. She helped Kerri Dice and Brooke DeHart to breakout seasons in 2008-09 as the duo shaved a combined four strokes off their averages from the year before.

Under Brown’s guidance, Appalachian has posted 10 rounds of 305 or lower. Prior to her arrival, ASU had reached that mark just eight times in program history.

Brown was tabbed to lead the Appalachian State University women’s golf program on Friday, May 16, 2008. Brown, a 1989 ASU graduate, brings 18 years of professional golf experience with her back to the High Country.

From 2002-08, the Madison, Conn. native headed up the Golf Juniors program at Richter Park Golf Course in Danbury, Conn., where she mentored dozens of young golfers, coached high school golfers and taught several hundred private lessons on an annual basis. Additionally, Brown helped lead the Danbury High School girls team to a state championship in 2004-05.

Prior to her time in Danbury, Brown served as a golf professional throughout Connecticut at Tamarack Country Club from 1994-95 and 1998-2001, Rolling Hills Country Club from 1996-97, Cabarrus Country Club from 1992-93 and Klein’s Driving Range from 1995-96.

As a collegiate, Brown played for ASU head coaches Tom Adams and Peter Rucker from 1984 to ‘88. She was both the captain and team MVP in 1988. Her former teammate, Angie Ridgeway, is the women’s golf coach at Southern Conference-rival Wofford College.

Brown replaced Bill Dicus, who coached both the Mountaineer men’s and women’s programs the previous 13 years.

Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Boone now attracts those seeking a breathtaking location, adventure and a quality education. Appalachian is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The university combines a small-town atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interac-tion between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 25 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates lead-ers in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Innovation and creativity are hallmarks of Appalachian graduates, who are leaders in communities in North Carolina and around the world. Appalachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and ser-vice to communities, both locally and globally. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused green technology and the health sciences. Consistently ranked among U.S. News and World Report’s best public universities in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian’s 410-acre main campus includes 19 academic buildings, a 210,000-square-foot library, 21 residence halls, three dining facilities and 11 recreational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through col-laboration with area community colleges.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE Appalachian supports a broad-based athletics program, featuring 10 men’s and 10 women’s intercollegiate teams. The Mountaineers hold NCAA Division I status and have been members of the Southern Conference since 1971. The Mountaineers have won 32 Southern Conference Commissioner’s Cups for overall excellence in men’s athletics, with 2012 being its seventh-straight year to win. No other conference school has won the Commissioner’s Cup more than five times since its inception in 1969-70 and no current SoCon member besides Appalachian has claimed it more than once. Appalachian also has won eight Germann Cups, recognizing overall excellence in women’s ath-letics. Appalachian is the only school to ever win both the Commissioner’s Cup and the Germann Cup in the same academic year – a feat it has accomplished eight times. Since joining the Southern Conference, the Mountaineers have earned league titles in football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track, wres-tling, baseball, men’s soccer and men’s tennis. In football, the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA Division I FCS national championship titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007. • 35 percent of Appalachian student-athletes earn a place on the department’s Honor Roll, with a minimum GPA of 3.25. • The nation’s top 10 percent of 2012 NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores includes three Appalachian athletics programs: men’s cross country, field hockey and football.• 13 of 20 teams at Appalachian have multi-year APR scores above the national averages for their respective sports (beginning 2007-08 and ending 2010-11).

APPALACHIAN ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to the high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress to-ward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institutional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsman-ship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing ASU is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies.

A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.

APPALACHIAN ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

VALUE AND AFFORDABILITY Appalachian consistently is named a best value by Forbes, The Princeton Review, Consumer’s Digest and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine for providing a high quality education at the lowest cost to students. Committed to making higher education affordable for every N.C. student, Appalachian offers the ACCESS scholarship program, which has supported students from the state’s lowest-income families by offering a debt-free, four-year university education. The university also includes a textbook rental program that saves a student hundreds of dollars during their undergraduate career.

OUTSTANDING FACULTY Ninety-nine percent of Appalachian’s full-time faculty hold doctorate, first professional degree, or other terminal degrees.

SMALL CLASSES, PERSONAL ATTENTION Personal attention from faculty is a hallmark of the Appalachian experience. Classes average 25 students. This close-knit “community of learners” contributes to Appalachian having a freshman-to-sophomore retention rate of 87 percent.

INTERNATIONAL CONNECTIONS With study abroad opportunities on nearly every continent, Appalachian students have access to approximately 200 foreign sites for semester and year-long programs of study.

CONTRIBUTORS TO KNOWLEDGE Appalachian encourages students to participate in undergraduate research alongside their professors and showcase this work at regional, national and international conferences. In 2012, 30 student abstracts – the most ever from Appalachian – were selected for presentation at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR), held at Utah’s Weber State University. This was a 50 percent increase in participation from the 2011 conference.

ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE CAMPUS Appalachian was included in The Princeton Review’s 2012 “Guide to 286 Green Colleges” as one of the nation’s most environmentally responsible campuses, as well as Sierra Club Magazine’s 2011 list of 100 “Cool Schools,” a list of schools doing the most for the planet. The university has a STARS Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS). Appalachian demonstrates its commitment through:

• an electricity-generating wind turbine on campus• a biodiesel-powered public transportation system • research and academic degree programs that focus

on issues related to energy, economics and the environment

• a commitment to new buildings that are efficiently designed and LEED® certified and that use 100 percent green housekeeping supplies

• hosting the Appalachian Energy Summit in July 2012 that brought together leaders from all UNC institutions to chart a sustainable energy strategic path to help achieve climate neutrality by 2050

PASSIONATE AND SUCCESSFUL ALUMNI Appalachian has more than 100,000 living alumni who are leaders in their communities and professions in North Carolina and around the world. They exemplify how Appalachian can and does make a difference in the world.

2012 APPALACHIAN STATE VOLLEYBALL

Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Among its accolades are inclusion in National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Norman Crampton’s “100 Best Small Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards” and U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.
