PREFACE

"Bihar Through Figures" is the biennial publication of the Directorate.

Though compiled regularly, it has not been published since 1995. The 'Bihar Through

Figures-2003' is the first publication after the reorganisation of the State of Bihar

in the year 2000. In this issue, basic data related to various aspects of State's

Economy and other subjects, like demography, agriculture, education etc have been

compiled. I hope, the publication would be useful to Research workers, Planners and

others.

I am grateful to the Central and State Government departments concerned

and other institutions for their valued co-operation in bringing out this publication.

Publication Unit of Directorate of Statistics and Evaluation, Bihar deserves

congratulations for collecting and compiling this publication meticulously.

Suggestions, if any, for the further improvement of the publication, are most

welcome.

Foreword

The State Domestic Product (SDP) represents the value of all goods and services produced within the geographical boundaries of the State in a particular year. It is one of the most important economic indicators to measure the economic growth of the state. The Per Capita Income (PCI) measures the standard of living of the people.

The Directorate of Statistics & Evaluation, Bihar has been bringing out the estimates of State Domestic Products since 1948-49, and updating them from time to time as per the guidelines and methodology provided by the National Account Division, Central Statistical Organisation, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, Government of India.

It is matter of pleasure for me to release the first issue of this

publication on estimate of State Domestic Product of Bihar pertaining to the period 1999-2000 to 2006-07 (Quick) in the New series with Base Year 1999-2000. This publication also contains District Domestic Product for the years 1999-2000 to 2004-05 at Current & Constant (1999-2000) prices, prepared by following the guidelines & methodology provided by the Central Statistical Organisation (NAD), New Delhi.

Co-operation and assistance extended by various Departments

of the State Government and Central Statistical Organisation (NAD), New Delhi in bringing out these estimates included in this publication is highly appreciated and deeply acknowledged.

The State Income Unit of this Directorate has prepared this

publication. I would like to place on record my deep appreciation of the hard work put in by the officers and staff members of the State Income Unit to ensure timely publication of this issue.

It is hoped that this publication would be useful by Policy-

makers, Administrators, Planners and Research Scholars. The creative suggestions for improvement in this regard are invited and will be thankfully accepted.
