Thomas BeechamAn Obsession with MusicJOHN LUCAS

Thomas Beecham was one of Britain’s greatest conductors of orchestral music and opera as well as an entrepreneur and impresario of exceptional energy and brilliant wit . This acclaimed biography places him – musically,

politically and socially – in the troubled times in which he lived and corrects the stories and myths, many of them Beecham’s own making, that have grown up around this uniquely gifted and controversial figure .

Drawing upon extensive research, Lucas presents new material on his early years, his complicated private life, his father’s catastrophic attempt to buy a large part of Covent Garden – which brought the family to its knees financially – and the orchestras and opera companies that Beecham founded . New light is shed on his visits to Nazi Germany and his view of its leaders, as well as the much misunderstood and previously unchronicled years of the Second World War, which he spent in Australia and America . Thomas Beecham: An Obsession with Music will remain the standard biography for years to come .

JOHN LUCAS was on the staff of the Observer for 25 years, completed Peter Heyworth’s monumental biography of Otto Klemperer, wrote Genius of Valhalla, the biography of Reginald Goodall, and is responsible for the current entries on Beecham and Klemperer on the New Grove.

Gerald Finzi: His Life and MusicDIANA MCVEAGH

The Finzi that emerges from this critically-acclaimed biography is a multi-faceted and complex character . The author shows how he developed from a solitary, introverted youth into a man with strong views and a myriad of interests:

everything from education, pacifism, vegetarianism, to the Arts and Crafts movement, the English pastoral tradition, English apple varieties, and the significance of ancestry, friendship and marriage in an artist’s life . She also discusses every work within the narrative of Finzi’s life, and shows what makes his output so outstanding .

DIANA MCVEAGH is the author of the highly acclaimed Elgar the Music Maker (2007): of the entries on Elgar and Finzi for The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1980, 2001); and of the Finzi entry in The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (2004) .

Looking for the "Harp" QuartetAn Investigation into Musical BeautyMARKAND THAKAR

Music – at its best – can provide an experience of ultimate beauty: a most magical, transcendent loss-of-self experience . Looking for the "Harp" Quartet is an in-depth exploration of how the listener, the

composer and the performer all contribute to this optimal experience .

The book is in the form of five dialogues followed by three related prose articles . The dialogues, which take place over the course of a hypothetical academic year, are between Icarus, an inquiring student intensely concerned with fulfilling his highest potential as a musician, and Daedalus, a curmudgeonly, iconoclastic teacher who guides his search for understanding . A student performance of Beethoven’s String Quartet, Opus 74 "Harp," serves as a point of departure and a recurring theme for these investigations .

Supplementary online audio files and musical examples .

The Ballad Repertoire of Anna Gordon, Mrs Brown of FalklandEDITED BY SIGRID RIEUWERTS

It is generally acknowledged that no Scottish ballads are superior in kind to those recited by Mrs Brown of Falkland (1747–1810) . Her ballads date from an earlier age and contain the themes and motifs of medieval romance and folk tale, a world full of kings and queens, knights and ladies, love and betrayal and encounters with the otherworld . They are entirely from an oral tradition, passed down a female line of transmission from her mother, grandmother and aunts; they thus provide a unique glimpse into the collective memory of Scotland in the age of enlightenment .

This edition presents Mrs Brown’s collection entirely in the order in which she preserved it, prior to the intervention of (male) ballad collectors such as Walter Scott, Robert Jamieson and ‘Monk’ Lewis . It provides the texts of all Mrs Brown’s manuscripts; where a ballad is recorded in more than one version, it presents the different recensions in facing page format, enabling an easy comparison . Music from the original manuscripts is also given in modern notation . A full introduction and notes complete the volume .

Professor SIGRID RIEUWERTS teaches at Siegen University .

MetapoeticsAphorisms, Thoughts and Maxims on Life, Art and MusicCHRISTOPHER WINTLE

Among the ancients, instruction in drama and letters – poetics – mixed craft, precept and criticism quite freely; in our time, pedagogy, aesthetics and critical theory are usually kept firmly apart . This

collection of ‘aphorisms, thoughts and maxims’ repairs something of the split by organizing the precepts that stand behind the making and reception of the arts into a unified ‘metapoetics’ . The book reflects on its own lapidary manner, investigates three representative theatres of life (power, love and death), and asserts our continuing need for the Gods and magic . It then moves from life into art, explores art, artists and the ethics of art, argues for the continuing relevance of notions of beauty, truth and genius, ponders style, and probes music, song and opera . Finally it returns to ‘life’ with thoughts on criticism and its practise . An appendix addresses other arts, notably film . The main text, which is both serious and witty, is illuminated throughout with examples from writings and culture of all periods . The book is richly illustrated with a set of mythic Beasts by the celebrated Anglo-Brazilian artist, Ana Maria Pacheco .

Truth and MusicThe Complete Writings from Music and Musicians, 1957–1985HANS KELLER, EDITED BY MARK DORAN

Hans Keller – born in Vienna in 1919 and a Jewish refugee from Nazism – became the most influential writer on music in Britain after George Bernard Shaw . His writings were always concerned with a search for the truth – ‘the truth about music, and the truth in music’, as he put it – and tackled the deepest musical questions head-on: why a piece of music had the effect it did; why a musician performed as he or she did; why the development of composition proceeded as it did . These issues and more were explored in a forty-year flood of writings, lectures and broadcasts .

Between 1957 and his death in 1985, Keller contributed almost sixty articles to the magazine Music and Musicians, and this book presents them all, edited and annotated by Mark Doran, from early pieces on composers he valued – Britten, Elgar, Schoenberg, Stravinsky – to ‘The Keller Column’, focussed on the vital questions of music education, and containing the last article he lived to write . At the heart of the book is the 31-part series ‘Truth and Music’, which contains the fullest and most detailed exposition Keller ever provided of his unique, music-centred aesthetics .

HANS KELLER’s capacity to stimulate, provoke, enlighten and inspire has never been more clearly demonstrated than in this engaging collection . Approachable in tone yet uncompromising in content, this book will cement his reputation as one of the essential musical thinkers in the English language .

Unmasking Ravel New Perspectives on the MusicEDITED BY PETER KAMINSKY

Unmasking Ravel: New Perspectives on the Music fills a unique place in Ravel studies in its combination of critical interpretation and analytical focus . From the premiere of his works up to the present, Ravel has been associated with

masks and the related notions of artifice and imposture; this has led to a general scholarly perception of a lack of depth in his music and, consequently, a de-emphasis on the investigation of his musical language . This volume balances and interweaves these modes of inquiry . Part I, “Orientations and Influences,” illuminates the sometimes contradictory aesthetic, biographical, and literary strands comprising Ravel’s artistry and our understanding of it . Part II, “Analytical Case Studies,” engages representative works from Ravel’s major genres using a variety of methodologies, focusing on structural process and his complex relation to stylistic convention . Part III, “Interdisciplinary Studies,” integrates musical analysis and art criticism, semiotics, and psychoanalysis in creating novel methodologies .

CONTRIBUTORS include prominent scholars of Ravel’s and fin-de-siècle music: Elliott Antokoletz, Gurminder Bhogal, Sigrun Heinzelmann, Volker Helbing, Steven Huebner, Peter Kaminsky, Barbara Kelly, David Korevaar, Daphne Leong, Michael Puri, and Lauri Suurpää .

PETER KAMINSKY is professor of music at the University of Connecticut, Storrs .

Ludvig Irgens-JensenThe Life and Music of a Norwegian ComposerARVID O . VOLLSNES

The Norwegian composer Ludvig Irgens-Jensen (1894–1969) was one of the towering creative

figures of his native land, although his dignified and powerful music does not receive the attention its quality deserves, either at home or abroad . The success of his dramatic symphony Heimferd (Homecoming) in 1930 brought him national fame, but the post-War triumph of modernism, coupled with his personal modesty, pushed Irgens-Jensen’s tonal music into the shadows: its contrapuntally based textures and its modally tinged harmonies were seen as things of the past . But a growing number of recordings is revealing him as one of the most distinguished and distinctive voices in 20th-century music, a figure of international importance who wrote music of striking nobility and strength of purpose – with some meltingly lovely melodic lines .

Arvid O . Vollsnes’ Ludvig Irgens-Jensen: The Life and Music of a Norwegian Composer is the first discussion in English of this profoundly decent man and his life-enhancing music . A review of the original Norwegian publication of this book in Aftenposten, the main Norwegian daily paper, described it as ‘a gripping biographical portrait . As well as Irgens-Jensen’s life we get a broad picture of Norwegian musical life from the 1920s to his death in 1969’ . A CD of extracts from Irgens-Jensen’s works has been prepared to accompany the English edition, providing readers with an introduction to his highly individual and immediately appealing sound-world .

Hans Keller and Internment The Development of an Emigré Musician ALISON GARNHAM,

EDITED BY CHRISTOPHER WINTLE

After World War II, the musical life of Britain was transformed by the Hitler emigrés . None was more influential than the writer and broadcaster Hans Keller who arrived in London from Vienna in 1938 . Although his thought was grounded in the work of Kant and Freud, he devoted himself to music after hearing Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes . His remarkable development was accelerated during the nine months he spent in British internment camps, where from 1940 onwards the deracinated flower of European culture was confined .

This book sets the story of Keller’s internment in the context of what is still a too-little remembered part of British wartime history and traces its remarkable effects in the decade following his release as he gradually found his niche in London life . It includes several important texts, including that of his famous broadcast on the Kristallnacht, ‘Vienna 1938’, a selection of poignant letters from his two camps (in translation) and ends with a spirited memoir by Donald Mitchell of ‘Hans Keller in the Early Years’ . It is a remarkable and elegant contribution to our understanding both of Keller’s development and of Britain in the 1940s .

Bernarr Rainbow on Music: Memoirs and Selected Writings is the third major volume produced under the aegis of theBernarr Rainbow Trust in the series editedby Peter Dickinson.

In the last year of his life, Rainbow was urged to write an account of hisachievements and experiences. Thispersonal memoir, introduced by CharlesPlummeridge, is a lively and fascinatingtour through the life of a pioneer in thestudy of music education.

Rainbow grew up in suburban London, holding various posts as a church organistwhile still a schoolboy. He attended TrinityCollege of Music part-time while workingin the Map Branch of HM Land Registryand spent four years in the army serving in North Africa and Italy. He entered the musical profession as Organist andChoirmaster at All Saints Parish Church,High Wycombe, and went on to take postsas Director of Music at the College of St Mark and St John, Chelsea, andKingston Polytechnic.

He was made an Honorary Fellow ofTrinity College of Music in 1995 and in the following year established the annualBernarr Rainbow Awards for schoolteachers. These are now administered by the Institute of Education, University ofLondon, through the Bernarr RainbowTrust, a registered charity that also supportsother initiatives in music education such asthe Bernarr Rainbow Lectures.

Rainbow's memoir is followed by his life ofthe tonic sol-fa propagandist John Curwen, whom Rainbow honoured by founding theCurwen Institute in 1972.

Rainbow's interests extended far beyondmusic education into church music andmusic in society, and this is shown in aselection of his articles, introduced byGordon Cox. Invariably readable, frequently amusing, these writings enhancethe profile of an extraordinary man.

BERNARR RAINBOW (1914–98) has made aunique contribution to the study of the historyof music education with his pioneering books, all now available from Boydell & Brewer: The Land without Music: Music Education inEngland 1800–1860 and its ContinentalAntecedents (1967, reprinted 1997); TheChoral Revival in the Anglican Church1839–72 (1970, reprinted 2001); John Curwen:a Short Critical Biography (1980, reprintedhere); Music in Educational Thought andPractice: A Survey from 800BC (1989, 2ndedition with further chapters by Gordon Cox, a Foreword from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, anda biographical introduction by Peter Dickinson,Boydell 2007); Music and the English PublicSchool (ed. 1990, new enlarged edition inprogress); Four Centuries of Music TeachingManuals 1518–1932, with an introduction byGordon Cox (Boydell, 2009); and now BernarrRainbow on Music: Memoirs and SelectedWritings, with introductions by Gordon Coxand Charles Plummeridge (Boydell, 2010). ‘One of the most illuminating biographical projects in recent years.’

PETER ACKROYD

The fourth volume of Letters from a Life, theannotated selected letters of Benjamin Britten, spans the years 1952–57, during which the composer wrote three major works for the stage – the Coronation opera Gloriana, thechamber opera The Turn of the Screw, and thefull-length ballet The Prince of the Pagodas – aswell as important vocal works such as CanticlesII and III and the Thomas Hardy song-cycleWinter Words. Correspondents include librettistsWilliam Plomer (Gloriana) and Myfanwy Piper(The Turn of the Screw), and friends and collaborators such as Lennox Berkeley, BasilColeman, E. M. Forster, the Earl of Harewood,Imogen Holst, Francis Poulenc, Edith Sitwell, and Britten’s partner and principal interpreter,Peter Pears.

The volume charts Britten’s growing stature as a major figure of the European musical establishment as composer, conductor andpianist, and his continuing involvement with theAldeburgh Festival, the English Opera Group, and Covent Garden. Central to the period is the world trip undertaken by Britten and Pearsand the first-hand encounter with the music and cultures of Bali and Japan that were radically toinform Britten’s compositional techniques fromPagodas onwards.

The comprehensive and scholarly annotations vividly evoke a key period in twentieth-century musical and cultural history, and offer a wide range of detailed informationfascinating for both the Britten specialist and the general reader.
