2011|2012 CoMMunity andeduCation prograMsThe Memphis Symphony Orchestra inspires and educates our community through music, providing 700,000 musical experiences each year throughout the Mid-South.

While many people know us through our performances at the Cannon Center, Germantown Performing Arts Center and other venues, we create meaningful experiences for our community in multiple ways that extend well beyond the concert hall.

The MSO serves over 30,000 students annually through our education programs and engages over 75,000 people through a variety of community events and performances. Our WKNO broadcasts reach an estimated 15,000 people a week across the Mid-South and MSO ensembles reach thousands of travelers during the MSO at the Airport performances.

MSO musicians play an active and essential role in developing and delivering our education and community engagement programs. These programs reflect their unique abilities and talents.

Creating Meaningful Experiences Through Music

eduCationCapa virtuosi: MSO musicians provide weekly music coaching throughout the school year for instrumental music students at Colonial Middle School and Overton High School.

Music Mentoring: MSO musicians inspire, coach and mentor high school students at Soulsville Charter School on a weekly basis throughout the school year.

young people’s Concerts (ypC): A full orchestra concert field trip with thematic curriculum-based programming presented annually at the Cannon Center for students in grades 3–6 from Memphis City Schools, Shelby County Schools and other independent schools. The theme for this year’s YPC is The Art of Communication.

education ensembles: MSO brass, string and woodwind ensembles conduct in-school performances at Memphis public schools that familiarize students with classical repertoire and help to develop active listening skills.

Kinderconcerts: Creative and interactive performances from MSO ensembles that introduce orchestral instruments and simple musical concepts to pre-K – 2nd grade students at Memphis public schools.

Leadership trainingLeading from every Chair®: A day-long leadership training workshop for corporate management that uses the orchestra and musical processes to develop leadership skills such as decision-making, team work, communication, risk-taking and creative problem-solving.

CurriCuLuM deveLopMentMusic and human Conflict: In collaboration with Facing History and Ourselves, the MSO is developing curriculum around WWI and the Holocaust that explores the role that music plays in society.

other projeCtsMso at the airport: MSO ensembles provide hour-long free performances at the Memphis International Airport once a month on Friday afternoons. Performances take place in the passenger connector near the Blue Note Café and across from the food court in the concourse B rotunda.

Mso Big Band: Featured at concerts and other community events, the MSO Big Band plays historic music originally performed and broadcast at the Peabody Hotel during the golden years of big band music.

Drum Circles Leading from Every Chair®Soulsville Family Tunes & Tales

faMiLyfamily tunes and tales: MSO ensembles bring storytelling to life through music, acting and artwork. These free performances begin in January 11 a.m. on Saturdays at area libraries.

opus one Connections: A series of family-friendly, multi- generational performance events that are customized for audiences with limited orchestral music experience. Opus One Connections support Opus One concerts, and this season, the program targets the Hispanic community of Memphis.

heaLth and WeLLnessdrum Circles: Serving special needs and at-risk community groups, this weekly program enables students and community members to participate in therapeutic drumming as a means to deal with life’s stresses and personal development challenges.

Music for nursing homes: MSO ensembles perform in assisted living, hospice care, skilled care facilities and retirement communities to improve the lives of seniors and the disabled.

aduLt eduCationWKno radio hour: Broadcasts explore musical history themes and preview upcoming MSO concerts. The show airs on Fridays at 3 p.m.

Music history Course: A lecture series in partnership with higher education institutions and community organizations that explores topics related to Western Art Music.
