Out of the 60,000 elevators in NYC, fewer than 60 were involved in an accident last year,

A horrific elevator accidentthat claimed the life of awoman on her way intowork yesterday stunnedthe city.

Suzanne Hart, a 41-year-old advertising executiveat Young & Rubicam, wasstepping onto the elevatorat her office at 285 Madi-son when the doors closedon her foot. The elevatorthen rapidly ascended,pulling her body with it tothe next floor and crush-ing her to death.

“People are very shak-en,” said an employee whoworks in the building.

Two other people whowere on the elevator and

witnessed the grisly acci-dent were taken to a near-by hospital for psychologi-cal treatment. Inspectorsare investigating the causeof the accident.

Records indicate thebuilding’s elevators had 14open Department of Build-ings violations, but RyanFitzgibbon of the DOB saidthey are administrative innature and not related tosafety hazards.

“The last time this de-vice received a hazardousviolation was in 2003. Itwas corrected,” she said.“This device was last in-spected in June 2011. Nosafety issues were found.”

Joseph Villano, directorof testing for CBA Elevatorconsultants, said yester-day’s accident could be theresult of a mechanical fail-ure. “There are locks on el-evator doors that are calledelectromechanical locks,”Villano explained. “Theylatch the door shut andcomplete a circuit whichallows the motor to lift theelevator. It sounds like itmoved without that cir-cuitry being in tact.”

About 27 people arekilled in elevator accidentsin the U.S. each year.

Pride was arrested by theNYPD in November duringa drug raid on a Brooklynapartment. As Metro report-ed earlier this week, he waswanted on an outstandingwarrant for a shooting inNorth Carolina.

Yet Laporte released himon his own recognizance,Bloomberg said, even turn-ing down a $2,500 bail re-quest from the Brooklyndistrict attorney.

“The reason he was notbehind bars the last time is

that a judge here in NewYork not only didn’t puthim behind bars, shedidn’t even think it was ap-propriate for bail,” saidBloomberg at a press con-ference yesterday, report-edly becoming visibly up-set. “And ... he had a longcriminal record.”

North Carolina officialsdeclined an extradition re-quest for Pride, accordingto police spokesman PaulBrowne. The warrant wasoriginally written so Pride

could only be extradited ifhe was arrested withinNorth Carolina state lim-its, he said.

Laporte knew about thewarrant, according to TheNew York Times. Accordingto court records obtained bythe Times, Laporte was con-cerned about the well-beingof two children living in theapartment during the raidand Pride was released.

It wasn’t until Nov. 8, ac-cording to Browne, thatNorth Carolina law en-

forcement officials decidedthey did indeed wantPride. By then, it was toolate: Pride had been let go,and later skipped a Nov. 15court hearing.

“You’re talking aboutsomebody who ... is poten-tially a dangerous person,has a gun, has a criminalhistory, common sense saysdon’t let him out,” saidBloomberg.

Some livery car driversmoonlight as pimps’ assis-tants, driving prostitutesto meet with johns after aday of shuttling regularfares, City Council mem-bers were told yesterday.

Through these “brothelson wheels,” pimps offer“free delivery” of women,advocates from Sanctuaryfor Families said.

The women are drivento appointments by driverswho are sometimes pimpsand other times pimps’

helpers, advocates say. Thedrivers often makewomen’s schedules and re-ceive payments.

for Families attorney LoriCohen explained. But nowthey advertise “free deliv-ery” to bring prostitutes tocustomers — and evade po-lice by not having a sta-tionary location.

A Council bill proposesfining drivers up to$10,000 or taking their li-censes away if they arecaught driving a prostitute.

Cohen estimated thatthe number of drivers fer-rying prostitutes might bein the thousands — one

woman forced to work inthe sex trade was given alist of 100 drivers to con-tact, she said.

The woman, an allegedsex trafficking victim, toldthe Council that her driver,assigned by her pimp, con-trolled her schedule, tak-ing her to as many as 20clients a night — even or-dering her how to pleasethe customers.

The city paid private in-vestigators $290,000 to vis-it 10 gun vendor websitesand test whether retailerswould violate federal lawby selling to consumersthat may not be able topass background checks. Itis a felony crime to sellguns to those you suspectof not being able to passsuch tests.

Unlike many staged rein-carnations of celluloid orig-inals, “Once,” at the NewYork Theatre Workshop,has the heart and soul of itsnamesake 2006 film, buttakes on a glorious life ofits own. Nimbly directed by JohnTiffany with a book by En-da Walsh, “Once” has mu-sic and lyrics by GlenHansard and Marketa Ir-glova, who played Guy andGirl in the film. It’s decep-tively simple, with a large-ly bare set, straightforwardsongs and understated per-formances by the princi-pals. But the decency ofthe characters and theircomplexity beneath thesurface give the piece un-expected emotional power.

Getting prepared for“Kevin,” however, was avery different experience.

“That was some crazyother s—,” says Miller. “Til-da’s almost not even reallyan actor. She’s somethingnew. It’s this seamless rela-tionship between the wayher natural being con-sumes fact and fiction. Herkeen interest as a personin life and the nature oflife itself lends itself to thisbrilliant submission to fan-tasy. You just see a charac-ter take over her body. It’svery otherworldly to workwith Ms. Swinton.”

perfect, people-pleasingcomfort food. Celebratingthe beloved dish is theThird Annual Latke Festival,which features 15 top NewYork chefs competing forthe title of potato pancakeking or queen.

Amateur chef Dori Fern,a culinary writer and blog-ger, will also be competingafter winning a latke recipecontest held by EdibleBrooklyn. The Brooklyn res-ident will be cooking up herDouble-Happiness PotatoLatkes topped with Five-Spice Duck Confit in frontof a panel of judges that in-cludes the James BeardFoundation’s MitchellDavis, Brooklyn BoroughPresident Marty Markowitz,the New York Times’ Melis-sa Clark and Edible’s RachelWharton.

Fern is confident in herexperience eating, makingand perfecting the latke(she’s even written abouther quest to find the quin-tessential latke in the cityfor Time Out New York).“I’ve spent the past 13 years

frying up an awful lot ofthem,” she says. Her secretweapon? Her kids. “[They]are my toughest critics andbiggest fans,” she says.

Maybe that’s why Fernadmits she’s not too nerv-ous to face off against pro-fessional chefs such as Ju-lian Medina from Toloacheand Michael Sullivan ofVeselka Bowery at the com-petition. “I'm more excitedfor the opportunity to becooking among so many ex-cellent chefs and for someformidable judges,” she saysdiplomatically.

Or maybe there simplywon’t be time for nerves —the night before the compe-tition, Fern plans to hosther own Hanukkah-latkeparty for 60 guests.

2 Grate the potatoes byhand with a box grater.

3 Grate the potato intothe onion. This helpsprevent the potato fromturning brown.

4 Use only the starchfrom the potatoesyou’ve grated, not addi-tional flour or matzohmeal.

Time-saving tip: Use a food processor witha large-hole grating bladeto chop up the onions.
