Wisdom is once again pleased to present our new and recent releases toyou. We know our readers turn to us for different reasons—rangingfrom personal edification to scholarly research—and we feel our list

of titles has gems in it for you regardless of what brings you to our catalog. This is a time of great change in the publishing industry, a dynamic era pre-

senting every publisher with a host of challenges. Amid all this, Wisdom strivesto offer the best selected and edited Buddhist works with the highest productionvalues, whatever the medium of delivery. We’ve been successful thus far, and weowe this success to our authors and to you, our readers.

At the end of this catalog you’ll find a list of Wisdom titles now available asdigital editions through most major digital vendors. Let us know if there areadditional titles you’re particularly eager to see.

And on a different note, with sadness we consider the anniversary of the pass-ing of our friends, Geshe Tsulga and E. Gene Smith. Gene spent a handful ofinvaluable years with Wisdom helping to develop our editorial capacity. We ben-efited immensely from his vast knowledge and network of scholars and otherswho would come to visit Gene as if on pilgrimage. It is inspiring to see the flour-ishing of Gene’s legacy organization, the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center(tbrc.org). Started while he was at Wisdom, TBRC continues to fulfill its criticalmission of preserving, cataloging, and disseminating original Tibetan texts online. All of us at Wisdom feel much gratitude for Gene’s life and legacy, as well as forthat of Geshe Tsulga and Ribur Rinpoche (seen here during a visit in 2000).

CoverThe Könchok Chidü TreasuryThis nineteenth-century painting depicts a visualization from a practice discovered by the great treas-ure finder Yatsön Nyingpo (1585–1656). Könchok Chidü means “Embodiment of All the Jewels ofRefuge,” referring here to Padmasambhava, the central figure in this anthology of practices andtheir ostensible author. The “jewels” are not just the outer refuge of Buddha, Dharma, and Sanghabut also the inner refuge—guru, deity, and dakini—and the secret refuge of the body’s subtle chan-nels, winds, and drops. All nine are united in the form of the Guru Padmasambhava at the center ofthis thangka. Above him sits Yatsön Nyingpo, while the wrathful Guru Drakpo appears on the lowerleft with the blue Lion-Faced Dakini opposite. The Könchok Chidü gained enormous popularity notonly in the Nyingma school but also among Kagyüpas and is still practiced today.

TIBETAN ART CALENDAR 2012MAKES A GREAT AND TREASURED GIFT!

MayKubera, the Lord of HorsesThis sixteenth-century thangka may have been a giftfrom the Ming dynasty imperial court to a visitingTibetan dignitary. In the center, the deep blueKubera, dressed in heavy armor, gallops with sworddrawn on a white horse bedecked with a preciousbridle and saddle. He grasps a mongoose, a symbolof wealth, and is surrounded by a retinue of mountedwarriors as they are stormed by a band of demons. This thangka likely formed part of a series depictingthe followers of Vaishravana, the god of wealth, sim-ilar to a set that hangs in Beijing’s Forbidden City.

OctoberBuddha Shakyamuni and theMiracles of ShravastiWhen he was fifty-six years old, the Buddha waschallenged to a spiritual duel by six non-Buddhistteachers. The story of how he defeated them overthe course of fifteen days is one of the most popu-lar subjects of Buddhist narrative art. This eigh-teenth-century thangka shows the miracle of thetenth day, when the guardians of the four directionspresented offerings to the Buddha and light fromthe Buddha body’s radiated to the highest peak ofexistence.

PRINCIPLES OFBUDDHIST TANTRAKirti Tsenshap RinpochéTranslated by Ian Coghlan andVoula Zarpani

“Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoché was like theKadam masters of the past in his

profound renunciation. He showednot the slightest worldly activity, not a

single one of the eight mundaneconcerns, and he had no self-

cherishing thought. Everything he did, even talking, was utterly pleasing to

the minds of sentient beings.”—Lama Zopa Rinpoché

Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoché (1926–2006)was a renowned teacher of Tibetan Buddhismwith students worldwide. Originally deliveredas a series on “Tantric Grounds and Paths” toa group of Western students in California, these teachings comment on a classic intro-duction to tantra by the nineteenth-centuryMongolian lama Chöjé Ngawang Palden. Thework, Illumination of the Tantric Tradition, isa staple even today of the curriculum for train-ing young monastics.

tradition. A must read.”—Georges Dreyfus, Williams College

Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), authorof The Great Treatise on theStages of the Path to Enlight-

enment and teacher to the First DalaiLama, is renowned as one of thegreatest scholar-saints that Tibet hasever produced. “Tsongkhapa’s jewel-like masterpiece, Praise for Dependent Relativity, draws together metaphysics, ethics, and practice with uncommon

precision and grace. The radiance of Tsongkhapa’s poetry is refractedand enhanced by the brilliant and lucid commentary of the lateVenerable Lobsang Gyatso. This book will be of enormous value

to scholars and practitioners alike.”—Jay Garfield, Smith College

“Woodhouse’s precise and flowing translation retains the syllabicstructure of the Tibetan Buddhist chant and interweaves his ownprofound understanding of the text with an excellent translation

of the commentary of his teacher.”—Gareth Sparham, author of Tantric Ethics

Lobsang Gyatso was born in 1928 in a small village in eastern Tibet. Hebecame a monk at the age of eleven and in 1945 traveled to central Tibet tostudy at Drepung Monastery.
