Winona State SEASON OUTLOOK The Winona State soccer team has a history of outstanding suc-cess. Seven consecutive NSIC Championships speak to that fact. In all of the program’s sustained success, the 2010 season stands out as possibly the best single season in the program’s history. The Warriors claimed both the NSIC Regular Season and Tournament titles while advancing to the NCAA Division II Super Regional Tournament for the first time. With the core of that team returning, expectations are running high throughout Winona. The Warriors return two of the top players in the NSIC. Goal-keeper Anna Belpedio was First Team All-American as a junior in 2010, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Forward Jennifer Deroo earned the conference’s award as top newcomer after a spectacular 11 goal freshman season. Surrounding Belpedio and Deroo is a deep team that is talented at all positions. Veterans abound, especially at forward and in the midfield, while young tal-ent peppers the defense. An eighth straight NSIC crown is in the sights of the Warriors, as well as another deep postseason run.

THE OFFENSE Winona State fields a potent offense year-in and year-out, and 2011 should be no different. The Warriors are deep in attacking, athletic talent that can light up the back of the net on a regular basis. The Warriors averaged nearly two goals per game in 2010, including scoring three or more in four of the last seven games of the year. WSU’s attack will be led by senior Melissa Sellier. A First Team All-NSIC performer and all-region selection in 2010, Sellier proved to be proficient not only in getting goals for herself, but setting up teammates. She led the team with eight assists while adding seven goals of her own. She will have plenty of help from fellow senior Sarah Colleran and Deroo. Deroo scored 11 times in her outstanding freshman campaign, including three goals against MSU Moorhead. Deroo came off the bench throughout much of her rookie season, providing a fresh spark in the team’s offensive attack. Colleran can play both the forward and midfield positions. She had five goals and two assists a year ago. A trio of Colleran, Deroo and Sellier bearing down on a goalkeeper is enough to put fear in the heart of any defense in the nation. Amanda Dennis and Hadley Bales will also see time at the for-ward position for the Warriors. The Winona State midfield will be led by senior Jordyn Strege. Strege was tied with Sellier for second on the WSU squad with seven goals scored a season ago. Junior Katy Soliday had six as-sists a year ago and is an extremely dangerous distributor of the soccer ball. Morgan LeFebvre scored once in her freshman campaign and will see time in the midfield, along with Samantha Fegen who also found the back of the net once during her rookie season. WSU will welcome scoring machines Cailyn McCauley and Taylor Zehren to the offensive attack, as well as Amanda Bergst-edt. All three will see time on the field in their freshman seasons and will be counted on to boost the Warrior attack. Rookies Alaina Kne, Shauna Rodman Sydnie Weishrod will see action in the mid-field for the Warriors as well.

THE DEFENSE As good as the Winona State offense was, it was the team’s de-fense that allowed the Warriors to make their deepest postseason run in program history. The WSU defense is led by Belpedio, the squad’s All-American goalkeeper. Belpedio made a school-record 116 saves in 2010 while allow-ing just 14 goals in 23 games. She pitched 11 shutouts, including a run of seven consecutive games without allowing a goal. The Warriors only allowed two or more goals in a game twice during the season as Belpedio turned away attempt after attempt from op-ponent’s offenses. Belpedio was 12th nationally in goals allowed average as a junior and will anchor Winona State’s defense once again. Senior Jena McDermott will step into a leadership void left by graduated seniors Cori Beard and Megan Rowland. McDer-mott had an assist last season. Juniors Jamie Babetch and Rachel Neumann will see an increased roll in the team’s defense, as will sophomore Rebecca McCoy. Freshman Amanda Canner will also compete for time on the field.

THE OUTLOOK While replacing three graduated seniors - Beard, Rowland and All-American Lauren Sturdivant - will not be easy, Winona State has the returning skill and depth to challenge for the team’s eighth consecutive NSIC Championship. The NCAA postseason is the goal for WSU. Early matchups with defending National Champion Grand Valley State, as well as NCAA Regional qualifier Regis and Metro State, will give the team an indication of their position right out of the gates.

Ali Omar

Head Coach

The Ali Omar FileYears at Winona State: 17th seasonRecord at Winona State: 227-75-19 (.737)College: Winona State 1992 (B.S. Management Information Systems)

One of the most successful coaches in the nation, Ali Omar has trans-formed the Winona State soccer program into a powerhouse that has set the standard for all other teams in the NSIC to follow.

In 16 seasons at the helm of the Warrior program, Omar has led the team to ten NSIC Championships and six NSIC Tournament titles. His Warriors have won the last seven conference crowns and have been named champi-ons in nine of the last 11 years.

Omar is 12th on the NCAA Division II all-time victory charts with 227 wins. He is tenth all-time in winning percentage, earning victories at a .737 clip.

For all the success Omar has achieved at Winona State, the 2010 sea-son may have been his best. Winona Sate posted a 17-4-2 overall record, winning both the NSIC Regular Season and Tournament titles. The War-riors also advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the fourth time. Once there WSU made history, beating Regis (CO) to advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time. Goalkeeper Anna Belpedio earned First Team All-American honors while also being named NSIC Defensive Player of the Year. Freshman Jennifer Deroo was tabbed as the NSIC’s Newcomer of the Year while seven Warriors were all-conference selections.

Omar has been the Winona State head coach since 1995, the first year of competition for the Warrior soccer program. After winning just one game during the inaugural campaign, the Warriors have been a standard for suc-cess. The team has not finished under .500 since and has lost three or fewer games eight times. Omar has been named NSIC Coach of the Year three times (2004, 2006, 2008) for his performance from the sidelines.

Winona State has been truly dominant in NSIC play, posting a 120-10-7 (.901) mark in league games. WSU has had six undefeated conference seasons and another eight years with just one loss.

Warrior players have consistently earned individual recognition under Omar. Nine WSU student-athletes have won the NSIC Player of the Year award, including a string of eight consecutive from 2002-09. Three War-riors have been NSIC Defensive Player of the Year and Omar has tutored two conference Newcomers of the Year.

Omar has recruited some of the best soccer talent in the country and Warriors have the accolades to prove it. Ten Warriors have been named All-Americans while Omar has tutored 37 All-Region and 88 All-NSIC honorees.

The Warriors posted a 17-5 mark and won the NSIC Regular Season title during 2009. Lauren Sturdivant was named NSIC Player of the Year and was a Second Team All-American after scoring 18 goals and handing out 11 assists. Omar won his 200th career game during the season, a 2-0 vic-tory over Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 2.

Omar and the Warriors set many marks during the 2008 season. The War-riors rose as high as third in the national rankings while earning a school record 16 consecutive victories. An outstanding defensive squad, Winona State held opponents scoreless for 1,093 consecutive minutes during the year on its way to another conference title. The team finished 19-3-1 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the second consecutive season.

For his efforts Omar was named the NSIC Coach of the Year for the third time in 2008. He was also honored by the National Soccer Coaches Asso-

WSU posted a 16-3-2 overall record in 2007 and an 8-1 mark in league play to claim the NSIC Championship. The mark allowed the Warriors to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time. WSU finished the season ranked 17th nationally thanks in large part to the top-ranked de-fense in the nation. The Warriors allowed just seven goals on the year and their save percentage of .918 was the second-best mark in NCAA Division II history. The team’s goals against average of .323 was the eighth-best mark in history as well. Individually, Holly Sutton was named NSIC Of-fensive Player of the Year.

The 2006 season brought another NSIC Championship, the third consecu-tive title and sixth overall won by Winona State. WSU finished the year 14-5-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the NSIC. Omar was named conference Coach of the Year for the second team while tutoring the league’s Offensive Play-er of the Year (Sutton) and Newcomer of the Year (Kasten).

Winona State repeated as NSIC Champions in 2005, posting a mark of 19-1-3 overall and going 12-0-2 in the NSIC. The team also repeated as NSIC Tournament Champions. Kayla Walters was named NSIC Offensive Play-er of the Year, the fifth consecutive season a Warrior had won the award.

Omar and the Warriors started their current run of seven consecutive NSIC Championships in 2004, going 15-3-2 overall and 6-1 in conference games. The team also claimed the NSIC Tournament crown, the fourth time in six seasons that Winona State had won both the regular season and tournament titles. Omar claimed the NSIC Coach of the Year award for the first time in his WSU tenure while also tutoring Amy Budish who won the NSIC Player of the Year awrd.

Omar claimed his 100th coaching win during the 2003 season, a 3-2 vic-tory over Minnesota State Mankato. Kristin Ruhsam became the second consecutive Warrior to win the NSIC Player of the Year award.

Winona State won both the NSIC Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2002 after going 7-1-1 in league play and 12-5-4 overall. Budish earned NSIC Newcomer of the Year while Beth Bell claimed NSIC Defensive Player of the Year.

The Warriors made history in 2001, qualifying for the NCAA Tourna-ment for the first time in program history. Winona State moved through the NSIC slate with an undefeated 9-0 mark and posted an 18-5-0 overall record.Winona State won both the NSIC Regular Season and Tournament Cham-pionships in 1999 and 2000. Warriors claimed both the NSIC Player of the Year (Elizabeth Narten) and Newcomer of the Year (Stacey Jacobs) in the 2000 season as well. In 1999 Minnelle LaPolice became the first Warrior to earn an NSIC individual award, claiming NSIC Newcomer of the Year honors.

In addition to athletic awards, the Warriors have also been recognized for their hard work in the classroom. As a team the Warriors received the 2008 Team Academic Award by the NSCAA for compiling a cumulative 3.34 grade point average. The soccer program has earned two NCAA Postgrad-uate Scholarships (Kathryn Kramer, 2005 and Kallie Tellefsen, 2007). Two Warriors (Kramer, 2005 and Tellefsen, 2008) were also awarded the Willis R. Bryan Ufheil is in his eighth season as an assistant coach with the Winona State soccer program and has helped the Warriors set the standard for dominance among NSIC teams.

Winona State has claimed the NSIC Championship in all seven of Ufheil’s seasons with the team and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times. The team has also claimed three NSIC Tournament titles during his time with the Warriors.

Ufheil has helped tutor a pair of dominant goalkeepers in Amanda Diehm and Anna Belpedio. Both players were named All-Americans with Bel-pedio earning first team honors in a vote of the nation’s soccer coaches in 2010. He has coached six NSIC Players of the Year and three NSIC Defensive Players of the Year, including Belpedio in 2010.

Winona State put together a season to remember in 2010, winning both the NSIC Regular Season and Tournament titles and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. The team recorded seven consecutive shutouts during the season. Once postseason play began, the Warriors advanced to the NCAA Super Regional Tournament for the first time in school history after a shootout win over Regis (CO).

Ufheil helped guide the Warriors to its highest national ranking in 2008, moving to No. 3 after a 19-1-1 start to the year. The team set a school record with 16 consecutive victories and had a shutout streak that ran for 1,093 minutes over the span of ten games. Winona State qualified for its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament that season as well.

Winona State fielded the best defense in the country in 2007 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. WSU finished the year ranked 17th in the na-tion after posting a 16-3-2 overall mark and an 8-1 record in the NSIC.

In 2006 the Warriors finished the season 14-5-2 overall and undefeated in the NSIC going 8-0-1, earning the team’s third consecutive NSIC Cham-pionship.

The Warriors won both the NSIC Regular Season and Tournament Cham-pionships in 2005 for the second consecutive season. Ufheil helped the Warriors go 19-1-3 overall and undefeated once again in the NSIC at 12-0-2. The 19 wins set the highest single season win total for the Warriors in the program’s history.

Winona State claimed both the league regular season and tournament titles during Ufheil’s first season with the Warriors. The 2004 WSU team posted a 15-3-2 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the NSIC.

Ufheil graduated from Winona State in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He completed his Master’s of Science degree in Sports Management and Educational Leadership in 2010.
