Welcome

David BrinkmanCEO

Curtis Ringness, Jr.Chairman of the Board

In 1995, Dr. Luc Montagnier was honored at our very first “Steve Chase.”

While the gala has become one of the most anticipated events of the Palm

Springs social season, the co-discoverer of HIV and eminent AIDS researcher

has gone on to further accolades, including the 2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Montagnier back on March 12, 2011 to

receive our Lifetime Achievement Award in Science and Medicine.

Unfortunately, 30 years into this epidemic, AIDS is not over.

Joining Dr. Montagnier will be Dionne Warwick and Pauley Perrette, who use

their celebrity to carry on with essential AIDS activism. We honor them as well

as local leaders Tammy Fox and Patrick Jordan, who serve key roles in guiding

our organization and helping to raise the funds that sustain services to our

2,200+ clients while keeping HIV testing free and confidential.

We give silent honor to those of you who don’t cross our stage but who buy

tickets to our events, volunteer at our office or one of our Revivals stores, or

lend your expertise as a Board member. You help is essential.

We salute our heroes at the 17th AnnualSteve Chase Humanitarian Awards.

Welcome

Our sponsors are key to helping us reach our goal of grossing more

than $1 million at the 17th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. They

have made it an honor for us to co-chair this event for the third consecutive

year and for Integrated Wealth Management to return as Presenting Sponsor.

IWM has made this a five-year, $1 million commitment!

In a service area where the HIV infection rate is almost three times our

national epidemic rate, your support of D.A.P.’s missions of care, prevention,

and advocacy for those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS is more important

than ever!

Thank you for joining us this year and enjoy tonight’s entertainment by Broadway stars Audra McDonald and Lorna Luft, Argentinean tenor Iván Gancédo, and the original Broadway cast of “RENT”.

Have some fun with us and help raise essential funds for Desert AIDS Project!

We couldn’t do it without the generosity of our wonderful Palm Springs community!!

Desert AIDS Project

12 The 17th Annual Steve ChaSe Humanitarian Awards

An essential health care partner to thecoachella valley and beyond since 1984

It was a group of generous volunteers who saw the need, more than 26 years ago, to ease the suffering of those who were dying so quickly of this mysterious, new epidemic that had barely even been named. From that beginning, Desert AIDS Project has evolved into a one-of-a-kind AIDS service organization that has helped thousands access care that might not otherwise be available to them.

Although the number of primary care physicians in our area is significant, they predominantly serve those who are well-insured. Within the greater Palm Springs area, there are four medically under served areas with more than 61,000 people living at or below the federal poverty threshold – with almost 17% of them being uninsured.

Desert AIDS Project (D.A.P.) provides comprehensive, culturally and linguistically appropriate services to mostly low-income individuals, many with no private health insurance. These services include case management, primary medical and dental care, mental health/substance abuse screening and treatment, as well as a range of social services, including assistance with food, housing, transportation, and other basic needs.

An HIV/AIDS specialty pharmacy, laboratory services for blood work, and County benefits counselors to help clients work through a sometimes-confusing network are all housed at D.A.P.’s headquarters in Palm Springs. Combining all of these services with a Community Center where clients can access a variety of educational and social activities, truly makes Desert AIDS Project a one-stop experience that exists nowhere else for those living with HIV/AIDS.

Joan Collins … is internationally renowned for her role of Alexis Carrington Colby in “Dynasty,” one of TV’s highest rated dramas. For eight years, viewers were treated to a weekly dose of her elaborate schemes for power, money and love, as Joan etched a place for herself in Hollywood history. Nominated for an Emmy award and winner of the Golden Globe and People’s Choice Award, as well as numerous other awards worldwide, Joan has appeared in more than 60 feature films and dozens of television programs, in addition to publishing 13 books. Although she has been consistently voted one of the “World’s Most Beautiful Women” by prestigious magazines, there is no doubt that Joan Collins is much more than just a pretty face.

George Hamilton… personifies the “Golden Age of Hollywood”

when a star’s style, charm, and good

looks were as exciting off-screen as on. His

exuberant outlook on life was on display when

he competed in the enormously popular TV

show “Dancing with the Stars” and hosted

the nationally-syndicated daily talk show

“The George & Alana Show.” His extensive

film credits started as a teenager, launching

a long and successful career. He starred on

Broadway in the award-winning “Chicago”

and has appeared in endless television mini-

series, series and movies-ofthe- week. He’s

written a best-selling autobiography, earned

a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and

has several films in pre-production. In other

words, George is still enjoying life to the hilt.

Gala Co-Hosts

Page 17: 2011 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Gala Program

Audra Mcdonald… earned an unprecedented three Tony Awards before turning 30 – for

“Carousel,” “Master Class,” and “Ragtime” – and added a fourth since

then for “A Raisin in the Sun.” Her soprano voice, classically-trained

at The Julliard School, uniquely blends with an incomparable gift for

dramatic truthtelling. No wonder that her theatrical work seems to

combine effortlessly with her major career as a concert and recording

artist who appears regularly on the great stages of the world. As if she’s

not busy enough, Ms. McDonald is an Emmy-nominated TV actress

whose career includes a current role as Dr. Naomi Bennett in the fourth

season of the ABCTV hit series “Private Practice.”

Ivan Gancedo… also understands the importance of honoring his family, which led

him to follow in a fourgeneration tradition and become an attorney

in his native Argentina. But when he attended a performance of “La

Bohème” at one of the world’s great opera palaces, Argentina’s

Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, his passion would not be denied. He

studied vocal technique in Buenos Aires where, through his acting and

repertoire training, Russian pianist Rozita zozoulia imparted to Ivan the

secrets of how to enthrall an audience. “He manages to enchant the

audience,” observed music critic Oscar Thompson, “not just by his voice

of exceptional range, but by the way he knows how to capture the

audience with his expression.”

Original Broadway Cast of “Rent” … defined an age dealing with the new realities of dread and

death from HIV and AIDS. Around the time the Gancedo family firm

was founded, Puccini was at the height of his productivity. Little did

composer Giacomo Puccini know when he wrote “La Bohème” that its

luscious splendor would one day be replaced with the coarseness and

noise of modern-day New York City as “RENT” aimed to “bring musical

theater to the MTV generation.” When the cast of the original Broadway

production steps on the stage at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards,

audience members will experience the struggles and successes of those

with HIV and AIDS, as well as those who love them.

Page 18: 2011 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Gala Program

Dionne Warwick… celebrates the 25th anniversary of the release of the Grammy Award-

winning song, “That’s what friends are for,” which she sang with Stevie

Wonder, Gladys Knight, and Sir Elton John. Becoming an emblematic

battle song for AIDS activism in the 1980s, its sales raised more than $2.5

million for AIDS research. She went on to form the Warwick Foundation,

to make sure funds for education and research were received in the

black community, which continues to be one of the hardest-hit groups,

both worldwide and in the u.S. A self-confessed “big mouth” who is not

afraid of stirring things up, Dionne has been involved in AIDS fundraising

and activism ever since. What better recipient of the 2011 Pioneer Arts

and Activism Award than Dionne Warwick?

Pauley Perrette… is currently known to millions as forensic scientist “Abby Sciuto” on

“NCIS,” CBS-TV’s #1 rated show. An undergrad honor student,

Pauley had begun a master’s program in criminal science before ending

up in entertainment. Her multiple talents have led her to become a

director, producer, published writer, poet, photographer, spoken-word

artist, and singer/songwriter. An ardent social and civil rights activist, Pauley

is involved in a number of charitable organizations working for animal

rescue, civil and LGBT rights, and HIV/AIDS. Her energy in advocating for

worthwhile causes has rightfully earned her recognition as the 2011 New

Generation Arts and Activism Award winner at the Steve Chase

Humanitarian Awards.

Dr. Luc Montagnier… excelled at science even as a child. After studying medicine, he chose

to devote his life to research, using the then-modern approach of molecular

biology to detect the virus involved in human cancers, such as the

mysterious disease that ultimately became known as AIDS. Co-discovering

the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) as its cause with Robert Gallo, Dr.

Montagnier subsequently helped to found the World Foundation for AIDS

Research and Prevention in 1993. He has high hopes that soon a therapeutic

vaccine will enable a body infected with HIV to build its own defenses.

Honored at the very first Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in 1995, Desert

AIDS Project is thrilled that he has returned to accept the Lifetime

Achievement Award in Science and Medicine in 2011.

Patrick Jordan… has never been content to simply contribute financially to Desert AIDS

Project through Partners for Life. He quickly became one of the top

fundraisers for the Palm Springs AIDS Walk and has identified numerous

other donor and volunteer prospects. He and his partner, Donald Stanton,

have created and coordinated other fundraisers, while Patrick helped

facilitate several significant gifts to D.A.P. from the Elton John AIDS

Foundation, as well as Elton John concert packages that included

backstage passes. Patrick is a principal, along with Stewart Smith, in Patrick

Stewart Properties, a real estate company in Palm Springs. Truly, Patrick

“walks the walk” and richly deserves this recognition as our 2011 Partners

for Life Award winner.

Tammy Fox… has served not only as a member of 100 WOMEN, which supports services

to women and children affected by HIV/AIDS, but also as Secretary of

D.A.P.’s Board of Directors. She leads by example as an ambassador for

Dining Out for Life and raises money for the annual Palm Springs AIDS Walk,

which she co-chaired in 2010. As the mother of two young sons, Tammy

feels the urgent need for HIV prevention for people of all ages and walks

of life. She is Senior Vice President in the Private Wealth Management

division of u.S. Trust, Bank of America in Palm Desert, which supports and

encourages her volunteer work. Thank you, Tammy – we are grateful to

have you as our 2011 100 WOMEN Award winner.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way!PARTNERSFOREVERThe legacy program of Desert AIDS Project

There’s a lot of wisdom in that old adage. Commitment matters. In times of adversity and challenge, the sheer will to make things better is often the most powerful force for change and growth. We’ve seen that time and time again over the course of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Here at Desert AIDS Project we invite you to think about that wise saying a little differently, and help ensure our future. Please join our Partners Forever circle of legacy donors who have named us as a beneficiary in their will. Where there is that kind of will, there is also a way…

… a way for you to leave a lasting legacy, regardless of the extent of your resources, and at little or no cost to you now;

… a way for you to let the thousands of patients currently in our care to know that Desert AIDS Project will be here for them for years to come;

… a way for you to help Desert AIDS Project to sustain its commitment to all of the critical elements of our mission: prevention, care and advocacy;

… a way for you to ensure our critical services continue despite the

continuing downward spiral of public funding for HIV/AIDS.

If you have named us in your will, please let us know so we can add your name to our Partners Forever donor wall. Let’s celebrate your support and inspire others to take action!

If you haven’t named us in your will, please consider doing so at this time. Our “Where there’s a will, there’s a way!” Campaign runs from February 14—april 14. Help us double the number of Desert AIDS Project legacy donors.

For more information, visit WWW.DaPLeGaCY.ORG or contact our Planned Giving Officer, Michael Miner at 760.969.4503, [email protected]

Join now and you’ll receive your invitation to our annual Partners Forever reception on april 15, where you can meet others who’ve

responded to the call and celebrate our campaign results!
