Welcome to the 3rd perisher snowy Mountains of Music festival. once again the festival opens the official opening weekend of the australian ski season up at perisher, smiggins and guthega. We’re much more than just a music festival, we’re the only music festival in australia in the snow!
the festival is growing bigger every year and this year we’ve got a fantastic program for you with over 130 artists flocking from all over australia to bring you over 130 concerts and workshops across 10 venues in the snow. Whether you want to get cosy and warm up your Winter with some chilled acoustic, or get pumped on the dance floor with some afro beats, the festival has it all with live music blazing from early till late at the smigs stage, the Man From snowy river Hotel, the sundeck Hotel, the Manor, the Jax bar, Kids stage, bazil’s bar, guthega alpine inn, Mid perisher Centre and at the basement Workshop.
starting Friday evening, smiggins kicks off the party with a cocktail party followed by music by richard perso, azadoota, Marshall and the Fro with ash grunwald cranking out his legendary sound till late in the night.
From Friday through to Monday across the resort there’s a feast of flavours, from african in the snow with King Marong and afro
Mandinko to rich melodies and sonic soundscapes of Melbourne indie darlings skipping girl Vinegar; wild gypsy with the Woohoo revue; feel-good country with the sunny Cowgirls; iconic protest songs with eric bogle to gutsy blues with femme fatale dallas Frasca.
this year we’ve got a packed program for the kids over at the ski tube with heaps of music, puppetry, songs, bush dancing and workshops from instrument making to drumming.
thanks to the support of the australian government indigenous Cultural Fund we are showcasing some of australia’s best indigenous artists at the snowies with Christine anu taking to the stage on sunday for one night only as well as the stiff gins and some great programs for children on indigenous storytelling, didj playing and culture.
the festival is also an opportunity to celebrate the beauty and wild tradition of the snowies so get up with the birds and watch the snow fall whilst hearing spoken word and folklore of the snowies over a hot cup of cocoa.
We hope you enjoy the 2011 perisher snowy Mountains of Music – soak up the music, soak up the snow and get set for one awesome festival!

4 Thank you 3rd Snowy Mountains of Music 10 to 13 June 2011
it’s great to know live music is enjoying a resurgence in regional areas particularly in such spectacular surrounds as the snowy Mountains.
Festivals like the perisher snowy Mountains of Music Festival allow audiences to experience and appreciate a range of music in iconic surrounds as well as strengthening local communities and driving cultural tourism.
it’s also excellent to see emerging indigenous artists being given a chance to be centre stage
where they can showcase their talent to a wide ranging and appreciative audience. indigenous music and dance is a major force in shaping our national culture and expanding this year’s event to provide greater focus on the contributions of indigenous australians is a fantastic development.
improving community engagement and access to the arts are priority areas for me in the cross over between my regional focus as Minister for regional australia, regional development and local government and as Minister for the arts.
it’s vital we connect aspiring musicians and artists with opportunities and support them to strive for excellence.
With such an impressive line up of artists and workshops it promises to be a great weekend of entertainment.
Congratulations to the festival team on this great initiative bringing such a great line-up of talent from all corners of australia to the mountains and best wishes for a fun weekend to all the festival goers.
the australian government is pleased to be providing $25,000 from the indigenous Culture support program which supports the maintenance and continued development of indigenous culture at the community level.
Simon Crean Minister for the Arts
Welcome to Perisher’s Third Snowy Mountains of Music Festival.
perisher is very pleased to host the rich and diverse range of musical genres and experiences that we will all enjoy in so many unique venues.
My deepest thanks go to all those involved in bringing this wonderful festival to life. Without the unwavering dedication and energy of the perisher resorts Chamber of Commerce, in particular Festival Chairperson belinda shore
and artistic director david de santi, we would not be where we are today.
so many people have contributed so much to ensure the snowy Mountains of Music Festival is a successful annual event not to be missed. and what is a festival without artists ..... thank you so much to all the artists supporting the festival.
thanks also go to all of the event supporters and sponsors for helping make the festival happen including Win tV, Carlton, Cumulus, tourism new south Wales and the nsW national parks and Wildlife service.
Welcome to perisher! i hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend.
Peter Brulisauer Chief Executive Officer Perisher
i would like to welcome all visitors to the third perisher snowy Mountains of Music Festival. the festival is set in the unique environment that is Kosciuszko national park. Kosciuszko contains the country’s highest peaks, fragile mountain ecosystems, the famous Murray and snowy rivers, the rare Mountain pygmy possum and Corroboree Frog and many huts and ruins and of course our thriving alpine resort communities. Whether you come here to enjoy the solitude and scenery or the nightlife of the resorts everyone
agrees that it is a special place to visit.
over the festival weekend i hope you get the opportunity to enjoy the mountains, the music and the beginning of winter.
andrew Harrigan Manager Resorts national Parks and Wildlife service
as we see the snow starting to fall in our beautiful high country, heralding what promises to be another great season, it means it is time again to enjoy one of our iconic regional events, the perisher snowy Mountains of Music. this event has, in every sense, become part of the landscape, where the inspiration of the music is complemented by the majesty of the mountains. the colourful richness of the music is a celebration of diversity, the sort of diversity that had its birth in australia right here in the high
country, through the many different peoples who came to build the snowy hydro scheme. it is events like these that truly make our beloved snowy Mountains a winter wonderland where we can take time out to enjoy great company, great fun and the creativity of the human spirit. My congratulations to the organisers who have worked so hard to bring off yet another superb program.

"i am very pleased to welcome you to the snowy Mountains for the perisher snowy Mountains of Music Festival. the festival has grown over three years to become the premier music festival in the snowies and this year will have over 100 concerts at 8 venues across the resort!
there is going to be something for everyone in perisher over the festival weekend and i know it will be a very enjoyable experience for all involved.
i am very pleased that my electorate will play backdrop to such an exciting festival. there is nowhere in australia quite like the snowy Mountains and this exciting family-friendly event will show off the distinctive qualities of the Mountains and the community which i'm proud to represent.
i hope you have fun enjoying this great music in this unique environment

this may be your first music festival, so here’s some tips:
• once you’ve arrived and have your wristband, find a location to sit down, grab a refreshment and take a few minutes to study the program.
• there are 10 venues to choose from. you can either decide who you want to see and when or just take pot luck! Having a highlighter pen or coloured pen is a good idea. Mark the events you want to catch.
• plan your day allowing adequate time to catch the Free shuttle service around the festival. if the weather is inclement it will obviously take longer to get about.
• remember to have fun, keep warm and dry and be courteous to your fellow patrons when leaving!
• don’t panic if you can’t make up your mind! Chances are you won’t know many of the acts. try and get to all the venues to enjoy the varying atmospheres. this is an intimate and cosy festival so you’ll be up close to the artists. you’ll discover music you’ve never heard or you’ll end up dancing, reciting or just watching. if you don’t like what you see move onto another venue!
• at the end of the day (night) and if you’ve still got energy then hang around the bars (sundeck, smiggins) as the musicians may be up for a tune or two. sometimes the best music is played spontaneously at these late sessions! ask musicians where they will be jamming to confirm the venue.

His guitar work has been around for the past decade, and appeared on numerous releases, notably from Jackie Marshall, lucie thorne, and more recently tim Freedman. With the aide of his own band the 45, Heath Cullen branches out and carves his own unique territory with a strong debut album in 'a storm Was Coming but i didn't Feel nothing'. though rooted to some extent in alt-country, folk and rock, the album is adventurous, not afraid to dabble in whatever style evokes the required mood.

For more than 20,000 years the Snowy Mountains were home to a number of Aboriginal groups with a unique way of life. The coming of summer each year saw the arrival of large numbers of Aboriginal groups for a time of feasting and ceremonies in the high country. This coincided with the migration of the bogong moth from southern Queensland to the region. The moths were collected by the Aborigines, cooked in hot ash and a very nutritious meal eaten. The mountains were first explored by Europeans in 1835. In 1840, Edmund Strzelecki ascended Mount Kosciuszko and named it after a Polish patriot. The high country was first settled in earnest by European stockmen, graziers and landholders in the early 1800s. This endeavour, immortalised in Banjo Paterson's poem 'The Man from Snowy River', created
a myth that has become part of Australia's identity. In the 1860s thousands of people from across Australia, Europe and Asia flocked to the gold rush town of Kiandra. Miners came in search of wealth and found gold along with a life that could be lived nowhere else in Australia.Skiing as a sport first appeared in Australia, at the goldrush town of Kiandra in 1861. Originally referred to as 'snow shoeing' and later as 'ski running', skiing also served a vital purpose, allowing Kiandra's residents to maintain contact with the outside world when roads were closed by heavy snows.Come the mid 1900s, the Snowy Mountains attracted surveyors, hydrographers and engineers who sought a way to harness the power of the high country's great rivers. The Snowy Mountains
Hydro-Electricity Scheme was launched in 1949, and today it provides power to three states. The project employed a hundred thousand men, two-thirds of whom came from thirty other countries during the post-World War II years taking twenty-five years to complete. The entire project was completed on time and to budget, costing approximately A$820 million.Socially this project symbolises a period during which Australia became an ethnic "melting pot" of the twentieth century but which also changed Australia's character and increased its appreciation for a wide range of cultural diversity.Today, these high mountains have also become a place of recreation and entertainment.
