A personal message from Jim Crownover, chairman of the Board of Trustees, to loyal Rice Owls supporters

Please accept my sincere thanks for joining alumni, members of the Houston community, parents, former scholar–athletes and many other individuals who have extended their generosity to the Owl Club.

Contributions such as yours directly fund athletic scholarships and are an essential resource for the success and well-being of Rice scholar–athletes.

As a former varsity golfer at Rice, I saw firsthand how support for athletics played a vital role in the lives of student–athletes. Then, as now, these talented competitors were held to the highest standards of achievement, in the classroom and on the field. To borrow a military term, our scholar–athletes step on campus as captains — most led their high school teams — but leave as majors and generals. Throughout their athletic careers at Rice, they battle hard losses, celebrate triumphant victories and are able to hone their leadership skills in the arena of competition. This, coupled with the academic challenges that characterize Rice, provides an exceptional platform for growth.

Today, gifts to the Owl Club enable Rice’s scholar–athletes to focus on both the demands of Division I-A Athletics and the rigors associated with one of the top academic institutions in the country. They understand and appreciate that the gifts of Owl Club supporters make it possible to attend and earn a Rice degree. Moreover, the lessons they learn at Rice today will be vital to their success long after they have moved beyond the hedges. Whether in the working world, graduate school or the professional sports ranks, our scholar–athletes will be equipped with all the tools to manage any situation presented to them.

Thank you again for your generosity. Please take the time to read this annual report and learn more about how your contributions have benefited tomorrow’s leaders. And, as a member myself, I ask that you continue to support the Owl Club.

Jim Crownover ’65 Chairman of the Rice Board of Trustees

A message from Rice University President David W. Leebron

I am pleased to present you with this report on Rice athletics and the accomplishments of our outstanding scholar–athletes, who make us proud on the field and off. Over almost a century of Rice history, we have excelled in our athletic competitions

and, more importantly, we have prepared these talented young women and men for highly successful lives and careers. Their presence at Rice enriches all of us, not simply as spectators, but also because of their impact on their fellow classmates and our faculty and staff. Thank you so much for your contributions to the Owl Club, which makes so much of this possible. Being a scholar–athlete at Rice has never been easy. Stepping up to the challenges presented by both professors and coaches requires keen time management, great discipline and hard work. Our scholar–athletes graduate at the highest rates in the nation and go on to become successful in a wide array of fields — some as professional athletes, and most as CEOs, entrepreneurs, doctors, investment managers, lawyers, educators and philanthropists. I am proud to learn of all the contributions these alumni make to their communities, and especially proud that so many attribute their success in life to their experience as scholar–athletes at Rice.

We live in challenging times, and this makes your support more important than ever. And while the landscape of intercollegiate athletics is changing, be assured that we will remain true to our values: the welfare of our scholar–athletes comes first, and we will always be guided by the spirit of Rice’s honor.

I hope you enjoy reading this year’s annual report, which provides a look at how your support benefits scholar–athletes and Rice athletics. We thank you for your generosity and all that you do to support athletic programs at Rice.

I look forward to seeing you on campus, at our meets, games and during the many events that will mark our centennial celebration in 2012. And, of course, GO OWLS!

Warm regards,

David W. LeebronPresident

From the Athletics Director

Dear Owl Club Members,

Now in my second year as the Rice University director of Athletics, my passion and drive for the success of our scholar–athletes and the entire university community grows stronger every day. I feel I not only know my way around this beautiful campus, but I have also absorbed the culture and history, and truly understand the excellence that is an integral part of all things Rice.

The scholar–athlete experience at Rice is among the most challenging in the nation. During the week, your scholar–athletes compete with their peers in the classroom, some of the brightest college students in the world. They then walk onto the field of competition and face off with top-ranked teams and athletes in Division I athletics. I embrace these challenges for our Owls. I will never seek to lessen them, but I long to ensure that these scholar–athletes have the best experience in the country.

In order to grow our programs and deliver success, we must provide the very best coaches, superior academic support and top-notch facilities. Clearly, we rely on your continued devotion and generous support to make ongoing improvements in these areas.

To better keep you informed of how your support is utilized, I am pleased to present you with our 2011 Annual Report and hope you will find it informative and inspirational. I truly appreciate your loyalty and commitment to Rice Athletics. With your help, we will persist in strengthening our foundation of athletic and academic excellence and be a source of pride for Rice Owls for years to come.

Go OWLS!

Rick GreenspanDirector of Athletics, Recreation

Welcome

The newly established Owl Club annual report will be provided yearly to Rice Athletics donors who through their generosity provide scholarships and other means of support for deserving scholar-athletes and make competing at the highest level of Division I-A athletics a reality. As a result of recent changes to our annual fund (Owl Club) solicitation calendar, donors and supporters of Rice Athletics can expect their annual report in November of each year as part of our once yearly solicitation for the Owl Club.

This inaugural edition is aimed at accomplishing two primary objectives: First and foremost, to properly recognize every Rice Owl donor who played a role in generating $6 million dollars during the 2011 fiscal year. Second, to provide our stakeholders a transparent view as it relates to Rice Athletics finances, fundraising totals by designation, and an overview of how our donors’ contributions were expended and their impact on the lives of our scholar–athletes. The annual report will also chronicle the many competitive, academic and athletic accomplishments of our scholar–athletes during the previous academic year along with a look at where some of our graduates are today.

We thank you for your support of Rice Athletics and hope you enjoy your 2011 Owl Club annual report. If you have any questions regarding the annual report or have suggestions for future editions, please contact associate athletic director, Kim Koehn, at 713-348-6924.

Academics

Rice University Athletics prides itself not only on its athletic successes, but also on its academic achievements. Our students are truly scholar–athletes who have proven that success on the field and in the classroom are both equal and achievable priorities.

Rice University had 40 scholar–athletes earn the Conference USA Commissioner’s Medal during the 2010–11 academic year. The medals are given to those Conference USA scholar–athletes who have achieved a 3.75 grade point average or better. Rice also placed a league-best 220 scholar–athletes on the 2010–11 Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.

This past season, the Rice football team shared the American Football Coaches Association Academic Achievement Award for the highest grade point average in the country and a 93 percent graduation rate. Rice also led the conference with three players earning spots on an 11-member roster of the Conference USA Football All-Academic Team. Additionally, standout player senior Travis Bradshaw was selected as a second-team Academic All-American.

Men’s track and field star Philip Adam, earned the NCAA Elite 88 Award for Men’s Outdoor Track and Field by possessing the top GPA of all competitors in the 2011 NCAA Championship. He became Rice’s second three-time, first-team Academic All-American when he was

named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Men’s Track and Field/Cross Country University Division first team. Distance runner, sophomore Matt Carey also received honors when named as a second-team Academic All-American, and sophomore Dan Sloat was selected as a third-team Academic All American.

The Rice women’s cross country team received All-Academic honors during their 2010 season, maintaining a 3.60 overall GPA. Tennis player, Rebekka Hänle ’11 was honored by the conference, being named to the 2011 C-USA Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team. She is a two-time recipient of the Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal and a 2009 and 2010 ITA Scholar–Athlete. Hänle was also named a Rice University Honor Athlete during both the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

As exemplified by their performances on the field and in the classroom, Rice University scholar-athletes demonstrate success on every level. Their integrity and work ethic is evident through their commitment to academic achievements, community service and athletic accomplishments.

Steady as ever, the Owls had another outstanding season on the baseball diamond. Under the direction of head coach Wayne Graham, Rice (42-21) won the Conference USA Championship title and regular season co-Championship, the 16th-straight year for Rice baseball to claim a league crown. The program also posted its 17th-consecutive season with at least 40 wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th-straight year. Coach Graham reached another milestone win during the 2011 season with his 900th Division I victory in his 20th year at the helm of the program.

Highlights of the Year

Graduation Rates — Owls Walk This Way

Rice University scholar–athletes continue to be among the national leaders in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) studies, according to the most recent figures released in fall 2010.

The Owls ranked sixth among all schools who compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), having graduated 95 percent of all scholar–athletes who enrolled as freshmen from 2000–2001 through 2003–04. Rice was third among all schools with a 94 percent graduation rate among its African-American scholar-athletes, while the Owls’ football team was ranked fourth among all football teams, with a graduation rate of 93 percent over the same period. “We have a great support system in place for our scholar–athletes,” Rice head football coach David Bailiff said. “We make a commitment to the parents of each recruit that that their son’s academic success is a priority and we fully expect that each of our future recruits will maintain this level of success.”

The GSR for scholar–athletes who began college in 2003 is 79 percent. While this rate matches the GSR for the past two years and continues to be the highest ever in Division I, it has risen five points in nine years of GSR collection.

The GSR was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the academic success of Division I scholar–athletes by better accounting for the many different academic paths followed by today’s college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.

The NCAA also calculates the federal graduation rate for scholar_athletes, because it is the only rate used to compare scholar–athletes to the general student body. There are almost 105,000 scholar–athletes included in the most recent four classes using the GSR methodology, as compared to just slightly fewer than 77,000 in the federal rate.

Rice also ranked sixth overall in the federal graduation rate for all scholar–athletes (83 percent), while Rice’s overall student body was ranked fifth (93 percent). The Owls posted the highest federal rate among African-American students (89 percent), while the football team was ranked fifth (84 percent).

NCAA Tabs Rice University as Host Institution of 2011 Final Four

In the eyes of the NCAA, the Final Four has evolved beyond the mere championship weekend of a basketball season. It now is a revered American institution, and one of the distinctive high points on the country’s national sports calendar.

With status as one of college sports’ crown-jewel events, it’s understandable that the honor bestowed upon a city of hosting the Final Four is determined after exhaustive examinations and deliberations. While it is a city that serves as the host of the Final Four festivities, the NCAA assigns the actual responsibility of staging and running the event to one of its member schools.

When the NCAA announced the Final Four would return to Houston for the first time since 1971 and would be played at the massive Reliant Stadium in April 2011, it also hand-picked Rice University for the task of running its game-day operations.

Staging the Final Four is, however, not just a single-game day, two-game weekend or even a monthlong tournament the public knows and loves as March Madness. Running an event like the Final Four requires more than two years of preparation, a myriad of details are coordinated — from public and media-relations, to facility operations and tickets, to security and medical services, and much, much more.

A host of Rice Athletics Department employees put in a wealth of hours to help stage what NCAA administrators said was one of the smoothest-run operations it had seen in a few years. It should be noted that the Rice Athletics Department employees did so as volunteers, and took on the responsibility as part of a greater service to Rice Univeristy.

It is no coincidence that the morning the University of Connecticut basketball team was to play for the 2011 NCAA National Championship, its grateful athletic department donated some 500 of its allotment Final Four tickets to Rice University for distribution to the Rice student body free of charge.

Rice Baseball Earns Top 8 National Seed

For the fourth time in the last six years, the Rice Baseball program was selected as one of eight teams to be awarded a national seed in the NCAA Tournament by the NCAA Baseball Committee. It was the Owls’ eighth national seed since the selection process went to its current format in 1999.

Rice made its 17th-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which ranks as the fourth-longest active streak in the country. Only Miami-Fla. (in the field for a 39th consecutive year), Florida State (34) and Cal State Fullerton (20) have had longer streaks than Rice of making the NCAA Tournament.

Rice was also named one of 16 regional sites to host the 65th annual championship tournament. It marked the ninth time in the past 11 years for Reckling Park to serve as a site for the opening round in the The Road to Omaha. The Owls defeated crosstown rival Houston 4-3 in 10 innings to win the Conference USA Baseball Championship and earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

Golfer Michael Whitehead

The yearlong performance of Michael Whitehead ’11 highlighted Rice University’s 2010–11 golf season. Whitehead was selected the 2011 Conference USA Golfer of the Year by the league’s coaches and, after graduating from Rice, began his professional career at the U.S. Open.

Whitehead’s senior season at Rice was highlighted by his first tournament victory, a two-stroke win at the 60th Border Olympics played in Laredo, Texas. At the tournament, he set the Rice record for a round and also established a new Laredo Country Club course record, firing a final-round 62.

Whitehead was the No. 1 individual seed at the NCAA Golf Regional played at Colorado National Golf Club and finished his career with a tie for 16th, carding a three-round score of 215 (-1).

In the final weeks of his collegiate career, Whitehead began his run at qualifying for the U.S. Open held at Congressional Country Club outside of Washington, D.C.

During the course of a single week in May, Whitehead was one of 1,550 students who received degrees as part of Rice University’s 98th graduating class and took the first step in qualifying for the U.S. Open by making the cut at a local qualifier and then traveled to Colorado to begin play at the NCAA Golf Regional.

After the NCAA Regional, Whitehead played at the U.S. Open sectional qualifier in Dallas. He birdied three of the final four holes of regulation play at the sectional that put him into a three-player playoff to determine the final two golfers to advance from the sectional and play in the Open. But Whitehead would be the odd man out of the playoff and settled on being the first alternate out of the qualifier.

A day later, the big news in golf circles was the announcement that Tiger Woods withdrew from the 2011 U.S. Open Championship because of knee and Achilles tendon injuries. The buzz on the Rice University campus was the name his replacement.

In its release announcing Woods’ withdrawal, the United States Golf Association press release announced Whitehead would fill the open slot for the championship, which was played at Congressional.

Whitehead would card a 10-over-par score over two rounds at Congressional in his professional debut.

Rice Swimming — It Has a Ring to It!

In spring 2011, the Rice swim team won its first league title, taking the C-USA Championship after more than three days of rugged competition across town at the University of Houston natatorium.

For Rice head coach Seth Huston, who was named the 2011 C-USA Coach of the Year for the second-straight season, the roller-coaster year began with the team losing each of its first five meets, but Huston knew he had the talent. Another layer to the challenge was that the Owls were trying to win the swimming and diving championship even though Rice does not have any competitors in springboard or platform diving.

“Over the years, I kept thinking, ’how can we ever make it happen?‘” Huston said. “This year all the pieces were kind of coming together. Even though it may not have seemed like it to someone from the outside, I felt like we were doing a lot of things right. Finally, the last pieces came together the last couple of weeks. We put it all together at the right time, the conference meet.

Most anybody will tell you without diving you’re not going to win, that’s just the way it is,” Huston said. “That’s always kind of fun to try and prove them wrong. This was a complete team effort. I am really proud of the team. They earned it.”

That night after collecting the championship trophy, the Owls gave the head coach a celebratory shove into the pool. Then assistant coach Jada Hallmark was in the water, and one-by-one the champions (most of whom by now had already changed into dry clothes) followed their coaches in for one last victory dip. The team then did the school’s familiar Stand and Cheer yell for a contingent of happy Rice fans in the stands.

One conclusion was certain as the Owls began jumping into the pool. Rice had the divers to win a conference championship all along.

Rice vs. Houston in 2010-2011 — Check the Scoreboard

It’s a curious thing about sports rivalries. Rivalries have to be spirited, but there’s no rule that says the results have to be divided equally.

Whether it’s the Yankees and Dodgers, Nicklaus and Palmer, or Secretariat and Sham, the final balance sheet among the rivals isn’t always so… balanced.

The 2010-2011 sports year for the city’s crosstown rivals, Rice and the University of Houston, had a similar kind imbalance. After competing head-to-head in a full range of NCAA Division I sports over the calendar year, the most sportsman-like thing to say is to check the final scoreboards and draw your own conclusions.

So Rice did not defeat the Cougars in soccer. The teams tied, 0-0, in the last game of the regular season. It should also be noticed that Rice did not defeat Houston in men’s tennis, but then again U.H. dropped its men’s tennis team in 1988.

Scholar-Athlete Development

The mission of the Rice Scholar–Athlete Development department is, in essence, coaching beyond the game. We work to prepare our scholar–athletes to become both leaders and productive members of society. We assist in their transition at Rice and after they graduate, fostering success and achievement in all aspects of life. We are further committed to empowering scholar–athletes to develop responsibility, self-reliance, independence, personal values and leadership skills. As a department, we focus on professional development, personal development, community service, and leadership.

Owl Club

The Owl Club’s mission is to generate funds for scholar–athlete scholarships in all 14 of our varsity sports. The annual support of the Owl Club enables scholar–athletes to perform and experience success on both academic and athletic stages. Nearly one-third of the entire Athletics budget is comprised of the cost of scholarships. Annual gifts to the Owl Club assist in covering such costs. The funds raised through the support of the Owl Club are vital to helping our students compete at the highest level in their sport and in the classroom.

Contributions made to the Owl Club entitle members to certain seating, parking and hospitality benefits. Those benefits will be received in the same year that the gift is made and are only received through gifts made to the Owl Club.

Evening for Rice’s Honour

In Sept. 2010, Rice Athletics hosted its 14th biennial Evening for Rice’s Honour, celebrating Rice’s continuing intercollegiate sports successes. The evening was highlighted by the presentation of the Distinguished Owl Club Award to Coach Wayne Graham and Mr. D. Kent Anderson, recognized for their outstanding dedication and tremendous leadership in the ongoing support of Rice’s athletic programs. All proceeds from the event benefit Rice University Athletics.

Rice 100

The Rice 100 program is designed to facilitate the distribution of tickets purchased by corporations, civic- minded busineses and individuals to donate to local charities or youth organizations who would normally not be able to attend a collegiate football game.

Through such distribution of tickets, Rice Athletics aims to raise awareness of Rice football throughout the City of Houston, increase attendance at home football games, and create goodwill for the contributor and Rice Athletics.
