Take a leap of Faith and Walk with ASA On Saturday, October 15, 2011, around 250 students, teachers, staff, parents, alumni, and friends of

ASA, along with their dogs, participated in ASA’s first Walkathon, organized by the school’s Advisory Board, to raise funds for the school’s tuition assistance fund. To date, the Walkathon has raised $34,298.00 for the school.

On the day of the Walkathon, yellow and blue balloons, along with DJ Chahan’s music, dogs wearing yellow/blue bandanas (“I bark for ASA”) created a warm and fun ambiance in the school’s parking lot. Among the attendees were a photographer from Glendale News Press and a reporter from KABC television, covering the amazing story of our third grader, Olivia Kalindjian. Olivia and our walkathon made the cover page of Sunday’s Glendale News Press. Olivia was also featured on KABC Saturday’s evening news program.

After stretching with Coach Janet and prayers, participants rushed to the school’s gates to commence the 2-mile walk to Crescenta Valley Park at 9:00 a.m. Participants arrived in CV Park around 9:45 a.m. and enjoyed a light breakfast and a nice rest. While at the park, Mrs. Naris Khalatian-Bethel of the school’s Advi-sory Board announced the names of the three top fundraisers: (1) Caryan (Serag & Serlee and Family) raising $6,025, (2) Kalindjian (Olivia and Family) raising $4,985, and (3) Odabashian (Serge & Galia and Family) rais-ing $4,644. Three donated iPads were awarded to the top three fundraisers.

Participants walked back to school and then left home with fine and fun memories of their first walk-athon.

First day of school is always particularly nerve-wracking for students and parents alike. From a student perspective and after a long summer vaca-tion, there is much anticipation over reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. On the aca-demic level, students are anxious with thoughts about the new school year that will be fraught with new challenges to face and obstacles to surmount. From a parent’s perspective, on the other hand, there are lingering questions about how the year will unfold with its many surprises and pitfalls. Will the children rise to the occasion and perform well in their classes? Have we worked enough over the summer and prepared them for the new scholastic year? How will they cope with the increased work load or the new classroom teacher? These were some of the topics that randomly came up in our dis-cussion while we were driving to Armenian Sisters Academy on the first day of school.

But then we reached the school, and something magical happened. Perched in the beautiful Cres-centa Valley, the view of Armenian Sisters Academy has a majestic serenity that momentarily brought up a feeling of tranquility and peace, permeating to one’s soul. The view of the large ASA parking lot punctuated with cars of different colors; juxtaposed to students offloading their back-packs, parents waving, hugging or spiritedly chatting. Like a true kaleidoscope of illusion, the surreal scene set off many emotions. At this point the physical time seemed to stop; as if I had entered a dif-ferent dimension, next I noticed my two kids were already in their perspective classes after having greeted and chatted with some of their old classmates in the parking lot. Was this a dream? No! The Sisters with their beautiful garbs were still out there welcoming everyone with a genuine smile; An-toine was running around capturing and memorializing those magical moments with his camera, while Ms. Kazanjian was dotingly giving a word of encouragement to a sighing, beautiful little girl.

At that moment, I realized my kids were back home at the Armenian Sisters Academy and every-thing was going to be just fine!

This month, the first graders learned about plants and their basic needs. As an activity, each student brought a small plant to class. Everyday, the students watered their plant and slowly, but surely saw their plants grow and blossom in front of their eyes.

On October 13th, the first grade students went on a field trip to Seussical the Musical, presented by Children’s Theatre Experience, at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. The musical was based on Dr. Seuss’ book Horton Hears a Who. The magnificent production was put on by professional actors as well as young inspiring actors. Our students watched the performance in awe and really enjoyed it. It truly was a spectacular performance. Thank you to the class moms who volunteered to join us on the field trip.

Your child’s school success

Dear Parents,

You can make a real difference in promoting a positive learning experience for your child, both at school and at home! As your child’s first and most important teacher, you play an important role in his or her future success in school. Here are three ideas that can help support your child’s learning:

1)Be an example. Reading: Be a reader and let your child see you read. Read to your child or with your child.

Go to the library together. Your child will see how important reading is to you and will want to copy what you are doing.

Your education: Continue your own education. Remain curious about learning new things. Your child is watching you!

Educational opportunities: Have educational resources in your home such as books, maps, globes, and computers. Be alert to teachable moments that might appear at any time, and take advantage of those opportunities to help your child learn.

2) Support school rules,

*Rules and procedures: The beginning of a new school year is a great time to review the rules together.

* Home and classroom rules: Talk about home rules you have made that will support your child’s learning. Believe it or not, children actually like rules that help create an atmosphere where they can learn better. Rules provide predictability and routines that are valuable assets for learners.

3) Be available:

* Parent helper or field trip helper: Even parents with the busiest schedules can find some way to contribute the class. Make a special effort to attend school open houses and activities.

* Parent-teacher conferences and communication: Take advantage of these opportunities to stay informed about your child’s progress at school.

Developing a strong, positive relationship with the school will help support your child’s school suc-cess!

The First Time My Class Went in the Lab

It was fourth period, and our science teacher, Mrs. Kossayan, had promised to take us to the science lab by the cafeteria. We had just finished learning about cells.

When we got in, Mr. B told us that he doesn’t like noise because he works in there. He also said the micro-scopes were already set, and we should be careful.

There were two tables each containing two microscopes. Mrs. Kossayan said we should draw the cells we saw in our notebooks. She said the table by the door had a human blood cell and an animal cell, and the other table, where I was, had plant cells.

We looked at the cells many times to draw them. Since each table had two microscopes, each table was sepa-rated to two groups. The groups were divided by which microscope is closer to whom.

The first cells I drew were the pine tree cells. Then we switched tables and I drew the human blood cells.

The pine tree cells stuck together, and I could see the nucleus, the brain of a cell. The human blood cells were tiny little pink circles with some gaps.

I think it was the best time that day because it was the first time we ever went. I hope we can go again!
