Committee Business

1. Launch Night

a. Thank you to the committee!

b. Takings and profit

- Takings on the night of £1117, which should yield a profit of around £690 after we return/find a use for the leftover alcohol.

c. Arrangements for left overs

- Discussed options – we can return the alcohol to Bookers, sell it at cost price to the committee or keep it for future usee.g. Pride Week etc. No final decision reached at this point.

d. Photographs at Launch Night/Concerns about maintaining asafe space

- Discussed concerns re. photographs taken at launch night interms of privacy. In future we need to make sure onlypersonal photos are taken – no mass/group shots. Thecommittee will make sure that any unsuitable photos onFacebook are flagged/removed. At future events it was agreedthat the committee should be aware of photography and makesure that members are aware of privacy/welfare/safe-spaceissues.

- Concerns re. flag hanging at the front door, was it necessary

to have both a flag and a sign at the front door? Discussedwhether it was a welfare issue - it was agreed that for any

future events we will consider using different markers e.g. ourlogo without the acronym or a previously agreed sign

(example of fruit at welfare events).- There were concerns that while we need to maintain a safespace for the welfare of our members we also need to ensureit isn’t a secret space. Also discussed that Launch night is adifferent type of event - it is a massive event that is heavilypublicised. When compared with a smaller, welfare type evente.g. Coming Out Workshop it is clear we not use signage or arainbow flag.

e. GMH at Launch Night

- Concerns raised re. GMH talking to groups at the event andoffering lube/condoms etc. - discussed whether this is a safespace issue. Committee agreed that perhaps the placement of the GMH table led to people ignoring them for most of thenight however it was also agreed that we can’t coerce themembers in to approaching them. Agreed that for futureevents we will learn from this and consider their placement, aswell as what we expect them to do/offer at the event.

- Discussed GMH’s new campaign involving STD testing whichinvolves providing a swab whilst out (e.g. at Polo) and having

quick/anonymous testing and whether it was appropriate todiscuss this at the Launch Night. Most of the committee wereunaware of this campaign and will look into it further. We willalso look into providing them with an opportunity to discuss itfurther with the members at a more appropriate event.

- Discussed whether we need to contact them specificallyregarding the launch night issues but it was decided that wewill wait until our next natural contact with them and offerideas/pointers as to how to make their presence morebeneficial for both them and our members at the next eventwe invite them to.

f. Launch Night Posters

- Will try to keep the quote posters for future events, there isno room in the lockers but we can store them in committeemember’s homes!

2. Sponsorship Update

- £50 from Tunnocks – donation, not sponsorship so no strings

attached!- $100 anonymous donation delayed until Christmas.

- Mark has applied for grant from LGBT West of Scotland Forum

- Discussed that we shouldn’t have flyers/advertisements for anycompanies or club nights at our events unless they are sponsors. This is because not only is it unfair on our current sponsors who arepaying to be advertised by us but it is also an opportunity for us topotentially gain new sponsors.

3. Coming Out Workshop

- Need to check asap whether we need a projector for the event.

- Jess will bring the leftover crisps from Launch Night.

4. Scene Tour- Current plans are to begin in the QMU – Champions bar and to endat Polo/Club X.

- Members are to be split into groups, accompanied by at least onecommittee members, and will have challenges to complete and anitinerary of bars to visit before finishing all together at Polo.

- Ideas/concerns raised that we should arrange the routes so thatperhaps all groups finish at Delmonicas to avoid anyone having togo back on themselves.

- Natalia to arrange instructions and to book upstairs/mezzanine atPolo.

5. Cheese and Wine Night – It Gets Better?

- Venue ideas - Luke and Jack’s (Virginia Gallery) vs. William’s Room. Will look into both of these ideas asap to get somewhere booked.

- Having a combined event with Drew/It Gets Better depends onwhich venue we get as it isn’t feasible at L&J’s.

- Concerns raised as to whether under 18s are allowed into thegallery, will check this when enquiring about booking.

6. Stuart McQuarrie – video event

- Discussed whether this should be a Wednesday night event, as itmay have to wait until semester unless we advertise it as anothernight event… possible back up for MSP event (see below).

7. Vicky Gunn contact – Back Up? (Erin)

- An MEP has offered to do a video link as they will be at aconference in Europe.

8/3/2019 2011, October 3 (COM Minutes)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2011-october-3-com-minutes 4/5

- Erin and Vicky are still waiting for other responses.

- Video event (item 6) as a back-up?

8. SRC letter – query Queer!

- It was confirmed that the SRC decision was reached due to aconcern that “Queer Tea” wouldn’t attract as high a number as“LGBT Drop-in Tea”. It was not a council wide decision and was notmade in order to ban us from using the term.

- We will formally respond to the decision to inform the SRC that wewill be using the term in the future and explaining the reasons whye.g. we are an inclusive society, we have members who do not

identify as LGBT etc.

9. SRC grant request re. Drag King Workshop

- Kit would like to apply for an SRC grant for Drag King Workshopsupplies and will apply for this asap with support from Mark.

- Bookings will be taken for the event asap.

10. Reinstating of Pride Week

- In 2007 the committee decided to abolish Pride Week and Mark

would like this to be reinstated. This was an SRC backed event inthe past and we would look into this again.

- Would include events such as; Women’s’, Men’s’ and Trans eventsas well as a “mini” launch night to start Pride Week off!

- Simon suggested the idea of “student pride” which could possiblycoincide? We could invite other student societies and organisationsand arrange a weekend of social and welfare related events similarto larger pride festivals.

11. LGBT Library

- Suggestion to buy one copy of each of the books that we read inbook club to create an LGBT library. The committee agreed that thisis a fantastic idea and we will look into the best/cheapest way to buythese (e.g. buying a used copy from a member or donations frommembers).

12. Posters (Chris)

- Posters are in the Royal Mail tracking system and if we don’t havethem by Wednesday they will reprint them and send a new package.

13. BLOGS

8/3/2019 2011, October 3 (COM Minutes)

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/2011-october-3-com-minutes 5/5

- BLOGS got in touch and want to hold a joint event and/or come toone or more of our events - discussed which events are most

suitable with the ceilidh being an obvious choice. They will also beinvited to the speed mating event, but due to distance the ceilidhwill probably be more suitable for them.

14. Strathclyde LGBT – joint event/Drag King workshop

- Interest from Strathclyde re. drag king places. They will receive aninvite/booking form and with prices and information and moneymust be paid up-front.

- All Glasgow based student LGBT societies will receive an invite tothe speed mating event and the subsequent ceilidh.

- Noted that we should contact the Royal Conservatoire (RSAMD) asthey also have an LGBT society.

15. Finalise next trans event and any other women’s/men’s/post-mat events

- Men’s event details finalised for laser tag.
