4 SUMMER 2011 QNEWS

A vibrant downtown is critical to the economic vitality of a region. The Quad Cities Chamber, alongside its community partners, works to support and enhance our downtowns – to draw new investment, residents and amenities to the heart of our community.

Festivals attract tens of thousands of visitors to our downtowns during event times, but there is always something going on in our cultural and entertainment districts!

Through The Wave, a bi-weekly e-newsletter published by the Quad Cities Chamber, nearly 7,000 people are reminded of all that our downtowns offer. Whether it’s a festival in Rock Island, art in Davenport, a farmers market in East Moline, music in Bettendorf or a concert in Moline, The Wave reminds Quad Citians that big-city entertainment options reside right here.

CELEBRATE THE 4TH DOWNTOWN

The Quad Cities’ Annual Red White & Boom festival, hosted in downtown Davenport and Rock Island, is coming up Sunday, July 3rd! Red White & Boom is more than an Independence Day event: it’s a community celebration. Be there for live performances, fun activities, and food on the 3rd. The event begins at 6 p.m., and the fireworks show starts at 9:30 p.m.

Be sure to check out the other Fourth of July events in the Quad Cities! This year’s theme for the Bettendorf Annual 4th of July Parade is “Old Fashioned Way on the River.” The parade begins at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of 23rd and State Street.

The 53rd Annual AMVETS 4th of July Parade, coordinated by the Quad Cities Chamber, begins at 1:00 PM on the 4th. The parade will start at 3rd Street and 15th Avenue in East Moline. This year’s theme is “Saluting Our American Heroes!”

URBAN VITALITYChicago is only three hours away – but why travel when you can find Broadway,

baseball and stand-up comedy right where you live?“Without a strong and

inclusive central heart,

a city tends to become a collection of

interests isolated from one

another. It falters at producing

something greater socially,

culturally, and economically, than the sum

of its separated parts.” Jane Jacobs,

FROM CHICAGO TO CALIFORNIA, THE CHAMBER’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TEAM HAS BEEN ON THE ROAD MARKETING

THE MERITS OF DOING BUSINESS IN THE QUAD CITIES

SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT

DOING BUSINESS IN THE QUAD CITIES

Our region is well known for its strength in food processing and packaging, boasting companies such as Kraft, Swiss Valley, Phoenix Closures, OYSTAR, Performance Food Group and Tyson, among others. So it was no surprise when the Chamber’s Mat Pruitt and Mary Immesoete headed to the Windy City last month for the annual Snacks and Sweets EXPO to entice new business here as well as promote the services of our existing businesses.

The event featured more than 500 companies and attracted all of the major American snack distribution channels.

The Quad Cities’ own Shakespeare’s Chocolate exhibited at the EXPO promoting their line of sweets, and a new website at shopshakespeares.com.

We also traveled to Anaheim, Calif., in May for the American Wind Energy Association’s (AWEA) Windpower international expo. The chamber’s Daniel Mann and representatives from the City of Davenport economic development department jointly staffed our Quad-Cities booth at the event. Windpower attracted more than 17,800 attendees from project developers to utilities, turbine and component manufacturers, and economic development organizations.

Although wind farms are relatively scarce within the Quad-Cities area, the region is ideally situated to manufacture and transport turbine components due to our excellent highway, river and rail capabilities. The Quad Cities is at the heart of a 12-state region that attracts approximately $5.7 billion a year in capital investment in the wind industry, according to the Site Selection Energy Report (April 2010).

Business Xpansion Journal published a story in their May issue on developing business partnerships with military installations. The story featured the Rock Island Arsenal, and emphasized growing opportunities within the defense industry. “Right now we have an extraordinary moment in history, where we can talk about the way the public and private sectors support each other,” said Tara Barney, Chamber CEO, in the article.

The Chamber’s “Who’s in the Q” national defense advertisement ran in the May issue of Business Xpansion

Journal alongside a feature story about business partnerships with the military.

Through Business Connections interviews, we can quickly identify any issues companies may be having with workforce. Through this process, one of three scenarios may occur:

◘ A company feels the skill set of their current employee base does not meet the demands of their workload. In this scenario, we can connect them with a local community college that has a training program already in place so the employer can get their employees up to speed.

◘ Rarely, a training program does not currently exist; we then connect the company with a community college so they can work together to create a training program.

◘ Sometimes the lack of skilled workers isn’t a community problem, but an industry-wide problem of not having enough people trained in that specific industry. In that instance, we may work with colleges to develop a training program to foster the growth of skilled people, which will then be used to attract businesses in that industry, growing an entire sector of business within our community.

For more information about Business Connections interviews, or training programs available through our community colleges, contact Mat Pruitt at [email protected] or 563.327.0164.

Partnerships with Local Colleges & UniversitiesThe Quad Cities Chamber facilitates monthly meetings with leaders from each of our local colleges and universities called the University President’s Council to discuss how curriculum ties back to our region’s projected workforce needs. (continued on next page)

Our region is faced with two major workforce concerns: a large pool of workers looking forward to retirement, and the so-called brain-drain of young talent looking to start their careers in larger markets.

In the Chamber’s five-year plan to build wealth, jobs and prosperity in our community, workforce is a key piece of the puzzle as we work to attract jobs, support the Rock Island Arsenal, grow our next generation of talent and even enhance the K-12 education system.

By using the force of 2,000 member businesses and 80,000 employees, the Quad Cities Chamber works through all avenues to ensure the employers that currently call the Quad Cities home, as well as the businesses that we are working to attract, have the workforce they need to support 21st century jobs.One-on-One Business InterviewsThrough one-on-one interviews Chamber staff identifies workforce challenges our businesses may be experiencing. Through these interviews, companies are asked to rank the availability, quality, stability and productivity of the workforce in our community.

“These surveys indicate that our community’s workforce consistently ranks higher than national averages. The surveys also give us a good SWOT analysis of the workforce, including showcasing the particular skills that the region is specialized and strong in,” says Mat Pruitt, Vice President, Regional Business Development for the Chamber.

When a problem is identified the Chamber can work with the business and other community partners to fill that business’ need.

The Chamber has conducted over 100 Business Connections interviews in the past year, with the goal of reaching an additional 300 companies in the year to come.

QC WORKFORCESNAPSHOT:

HERE’S A SNAPSHOT OF THE TACTICS THE CHAMBER IS USING TO BUILD WORKFORCE. WE CHALLENGE YOU TO CHOOSE A WAY FOR YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR EMPLOYEES TO GET INVOLVED AND ADVANCE THE COMPETITIVENESS OF OUR REGION.

The Network: Young Professionals of the Quad CitiesThe Network has a membership base of over 3,000 young professionals who look to the organization for social and professional development opportunities. Through The Network, our young talent can find volunteer opportunities to get engaged in the community, meet other young professionals, and attend seminars which help them advance professionally.

The Network also has a program specifically in place to attract new workers to the area called i.network. i.network is a two-month program for interns that exposes them to the quality-of-life amenities the Quad Cities has to offer.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER

WHOM I’D INVITE TO DINNER: I’d invite my mother’s first cousin, 4’ 9” Gunegunda Eber (Gunee to friends and relatives). She was the wife of a downtown St. Louis jeweler and the city’s greatest advocator of volunteerism as it was acknowledged in the late 1800’s. She visited the area frequently, and journaled her thoughts on helping others in booklets bound with pink ribbon.

WHY: Her booklets shared with me by my mother inspired my interest in volunteerism. According to Gunee, volunteerism was an inborn ability “requiring no remuneration or special accolades.” I would like her opinion of today’s interpretation of volunteerism

WHAT I WOULD SERVE: Gunee’s favorite, simple home grown stew: spinach, carrots, 1 inch squares of baked chicken breast in a savory slightly sweetened chicken broth, topped with fluffy potato dumplings, freshly baked oat bread, mugs of bean ground coffee. Dessert: fresh strawberries on homemade biscuits and a dash of cream from the top of the daily milk delivered.

Gloria FisherCommunity Advocate, Quad Cities Senior Voice

Cathy Edwards, OwnerEdwards Creative Services

WHOM I’D INVITE TO DINNER: Jane Austen, Author.

WHY: My reasons are two-fold. I would like to ask her how she remained so strong during a time in history when women were considered less relevant than men in most issues relating to family, industry, and world events. I would like to tell her how her books have given so many women faith in themselves. I would describe how her strong spirit still speaks to so many people throughout the world through her written words.

I would outline the amazing journey that our society has made throughout the years, and the opportunities today that are available to everyone regardless of gender, race or economic class. I want her to know that she was part of it, and that her words still ring true today.

WHAT I WOULD SERVE: A variety of imported foods from other countries. She would not have had much access to foods from other countries, so it would be fun to introduce her to them.

WE ASKED TWO QUAD CITIES CHAMBER MEMBERS WHOM THEY WOULD ASK TO DINNER (HISTORICALLY OR MODERN DAY) AND WHY. AND JUST FOR FUN, WE ASKED WHAT THEY WOULD SERVE THEIR GUESTS.

just for fun

WHAT ARE YOU SURFING ON THE WEB THAT HELPS YOUR BUSINESS?When reviewing information on the web I look to see if there are any businesses coming in or leaving the area. This helps me plan meetings with the new businesses and find ways to best help their employees with their academic needs. I also look to see what events are up and coming in the area. I do most of this through accessing the Quad Cities Chamber website. This allows me to stay up to date on the current businesses. Also, I have recently taken the BIG training with New Ventures so I will be surfing that information as well. Finally, being part of educational institution and an advisor, I review the NACADA website often to stay up to date on advising practices.

14 SUMMER 2011 QNEWS

T he Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing Technology Center (RIA-JMTC) is continuously striving toward technological advancements to fulfill one main mission – keeping soldiers safe and getting them home.

The local business community plays an important role in making that happen.

“To ensure this Arsenal is ready to answer the call for the next 150 years, we cannot drastically reduce its workforce in times of peace, and expect to

mobilize just in time of a national emergency,” says Col. James Fly, 46th Commander of the RIA-JMTC.

“The skills of the workforce of an arsenal are perishable. The expertise and knowledge that is essential to put together the industrial processes required to build complex weapon systems effectively are not easily found when you need them most, but must be carefully cultivated over time,” Col. Fly continues.

Public-Private PartnershipsThe RIA-JMTC engages public-private partnerships with the overarching goal to better support the war fighter by improving Lean manufacturing processes and keeping skills sharp.

From a private-business perspective, the RIA-JMTC acts as a medium-sized manufacturing shop. Unbeknownst to many, it’s surprisingly easy to do business with RIA-JMTC; in fact, the Global Business Division operates in a similar vein as a private business.

RIA-JMTC is currently manufacturing parts for Deere & Company, and holds partnerships with Sivyer Steel, Mandus Group, BAE, Quad City Manufacturing Lab, and others.

“Public-private partnerships allow companies to access the manufacturing capability of the RIA-JMTC, and the RIA-JMTC to advance technologically through intellectual advancements of private companies. Our local business community can support the RIA-JMTC, and take steps to ensure its stability, by looking to the unit as a manufacturing asset within our region,” says Paul Rumler, Executive Vice President, Quad Cities chamber of Commerce.

The partnership between Mandus Group and the RIA-JMTC, for example, allows the companies to work together, using the RIA-JMTC facility and tools, with the innovative engineering advancements of Mandus Group to serve the needs of artillery maintenance, solutions, logistics, repairs and general maintenance.

Defense is one of the industries targeted for growth within the Quad Cities region. Locally, businesses including Mandus Group, Alcoa, BAE Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, Cobham Mission Systems, Deere & Company, JTM Concepts, Vista, Pendulum Resources, Dyncorp, KBR and SAIC hold defense contracts. THE ROLE OF PRIVATE ENTERPRISE ON THE ISLAND

ARSENAL ABILITIES

“As we strive to advance not only the industry, but the supporting workforce, we need to continue building a community of manufacturing, and our manufacturing companies need to partner and support each other to work efficiently and advance the industry,” Col. James Fly, 46th Commander of the RIA-JMTC

DID YOU KNOW? The RIA will be home to the only Friction Stir Welding shop in the country, with anticipated workload for 90 employees for 10 years. The process ensures consistent results, lower manufacturing cost, and reduced defects.

› The RIA-JMTC is the only vertically-integrated metal manufacturer in the Department of Defense – meaning you can start with a raw material and get a finished, ready-to-use product in one shop.

› Has the only foundry capability in the entire US Army, complete with advanced technology for complex sand and investment castings.

› The RIA supports the community by offering machinist apprenticeships and other training programs, and was the recipient of the 2009 Illinois Community College Trustees Association Business Partnership award.

› Since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in 2003, the Arsenal has produced 50 percent of all armor solution for tactical wheeled vehicles.

› RIA-JMTC is the Army’s only recoil mechanism production facility – so nearly every howitzer in the Army inventory has a recoil system that was produced and designed in our community

› Arsenal Island employs approximately 8,900 military, civilian and contract workers, and the business conducted on the island supports an additional 14,000 jobs. The economic impact of the RIA is $1 billion locally.
