As President of Iowa Wesleyan College, I invite you to become acquainted with our football program and Iowa Wes-leyan College. Iowa Wesleyan’s founding in 1842 justifi es the College’s claim to being one of the oldest four-year, church-related liberal arts colleges west of the Mississippi River. The College’s history of recruiting gifted faculty and dedicated staff has created an educational environment in which students’ individualized educational experience prepares them for an ever-changing and increasingly global world.

Football has been a part of the Iowa Wesleyan tradition since 1890, when Iowa Wesleyan played its fi rst game. The College community takes great pride in these student-athletes, encouraging them as they build on this historic legacy. These young men and their coaches are committed to academic and athletic success. All of us at the Col-lege are pleased to have these students represent Iowa Wesleyan on and off the football fi eld.

On behalf of all of us at Iowa Wesleyan, welcome to the College. We are glad to have you on our campus.

Sincerely,

Jay K. SimmonsPresident

Mike Hampton is in his 17th year as Iowa Wesleyan College athletic director. He also serves as head coach of the IWC softball team, where he is the career leader in wins through 18 years with a record of 496-442.

Hampton brings a wealth of experience to his role as director of athletics. In ad-dition to his time at IWC, he spent 23 years teaching in Mount Pleasant Commu-nity Schools. He served as high school head girls track coach for 20 years and in 2006 retired as head softball coach after having started the softball program for the high school in the 1970s. He also assisted with the girls basketball program for fi ve years, initiating that program as well.

Hampton, a 1972 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan, has been a registered girls and boys basketball offi cial for 30 years. His offi ciating capabilities have led to his selection into the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association Offi cials Hall of Fame in April of 2005. In April 2007 he was also a member of the fi rst induction class into the Southeast Iowa Offi cials Hall of Fame.

In 2007, Hampton was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Associa-

tion for his 400 career college coaching wins. In the summer of 2006, Hampton was also inducted into the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Hall of Fame in honor of his high school softball coaching career. He celebrated 1,000 career softball victo-ries in the spring of 2005. Hampton was named by the Iowa Softball Coaches Association as a coach for the Iowa State High School All-Star Team in 1997. In 1988, Hampton was named Southeast Iowa Class AA Softball Coach of the Year and Bur-lington Hawkeyeland Softball Coach of the Year.

Hampton and his wife Anita (also an IWC gradu-ate and the school’s current Director of Alumni and Parent Relations) reside in Mount Pleasant. They have three children. To all Iowa Wesleyan football fans, parents, and supporters:On behalf of the Iowa Wesleyan College football program I would like to welcome you to the 2011 football season. We hope to bring you a season of what we feel college football is about. We feel that part of college athletics is about setting our priorities in proper perspective. This can in turn be a vital step in succeeding on many levels. We want our players to be students and citizens fi rst, to pursue their education, to be good sons and brothers and aspire to their chosen profession. If we set this standard and adhere to the values of sacrifi ce, fellowship, unselfi sh-ness, hustle and desire we cannot fail those we care about or our College.

These are important factors of not only a football program’s foundation, but also a foundation for life. We only ask that we give maximum effort, that we do our best, that despite the outcome what is important is how we competed. If we follow this standard, we can enrich our football student athletes’ college experience.

We want our foundation to be about passion, effort, hustle and pride. With your support we hope to make you proud of how we play. This is how new traditions can start and how a football tradition that stands proudly since 1890 can be honored.

Just play as hard as we can. Nothing less.

Kent AndersonIowa Wesleyan College Head Football Coach

Kent Anderson – Head CoachKent Anderson is in his second year as the head coach of the Iowa Wesleyan College football program.

Last year in his fi rst season as coach, Anderson led IWC to a 3-8 overall record. More importantly, the Tigers tied for fi fth place in the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League with a 3-4 league record, winning three games in the MSFA for just the second time ever and the fi rst time since 1996. Wesleyan also won consecutive games in a season for the fi rst time since 1997. The Tigers displayed a potent offense that scored 62 points in a win over Quincy (Ill.) and 41 points in a narrow loss to nationally ranked William Penn.

The 48-year-old Anderson is the 45th head coach in the 120-year history of Iowa Wesleyan’s football program. He took over for Jason Smelser as Head Football Coach and came to IWC after having spent the past 15 years as a head coach in Germany. As a coach in the German Football League professional ranks, Anderson posted a 182-62-5 record and won eight national championships. He won titles with four different teams and was a six-time national coach of the year.

Though he spent many years coaching in Germany, Anderson is hardly a stranger to southern Iowa. He is a native of Bloomfi eld, Iowa, and a graduate of Davis County High School, where he was all-state in foot-ball and basketball as well as a state champion in track & fi eld. The son of Dennis and Barbara Anderson, he comes from a family with a background in coaching and administration. His father Dennis is well-known throughout Iowa as a long-time head coach and athletic director at Davis County High.

Anderson is also a 1985 graduate of Iowa State University, where he received a degree in general studies and was a wide receiver and special teams player and a three-year letter winner on the football team.

Upon his graduation from Iowa State, Anderson worked in the private sector for six years in sales. He then spent two years at the University of North Carolina work-ing as a graduate assistant in the football program coached by Mack Brown, who is now the head coach at the University of Texas. Anderson coached wide receivers and the offensive line and was part of a UNC team that won the 1993 Peach Bowl, the Tar Heels’ fi rst bowl win in nine years.

Anderson also spent one year as an assistant coach at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, coaching wide receivers and coordinating the team’s passing game. In 1994 he took over as head coach of the Braunschweig Lions in Braunschweig, Germany, and became the fi rst coach in GFL history to take his team to the playoffs in his fi rst year as coach.

While coaching in Germany, Anderson also oversaw many of his teams’ football operations, including recruitment/scouting of players from the NCAA, NFL and Europe, developing corporate sponsorship and marketing programs, budget operation and personnel decisions. Outside of football he also developed skills as a motivational speaker for a number of high-profi le businesses in Germany.

Anderson is married to Friederike, and the couple welcomed their fi rst child in March, daugh-ter Laena. The family resides in Mount Pleasant. Kent Anderson

Brad Linares – Offensive Line/Strength & ConditioningBrad Linares is in his third year as an assistant coach with the Iowa Wesleyan College football program and again will coach the team’s offensive line.

Linares coached the Tigers’ wide receivers for the 2009 season and last year assumed new duties, taking over as offensive line coach and also leading the team’s strength and conditioning program. Last year the Tigers had four of-fensive linemen named Honorable Mention All-MSFA Midwest League, and his line was part of a unit that improved its output by more than 11 points and 92 yards per game last year. Prior to last year he was a volunteer assistant during the 2009 season and was hired on as a full-time assistant in January 2010 by Head Coach Kent Anderson.

Linares joined the Tigers for his fi rst-ever coaching job after playing college football at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill., where he was a teammate of former IWC assistant Peter Jennings. He is a 2007 graduate of IC and played as a fullback for the Blueboys from 2002-07. Linares was a two-time Honorable Mention All-Midwest Conference selection at his position. He saw limited action running the ball as a fullback, posting 38 carries for 148 yards and four touchdowns in his career. Linares also caught 55 passes out of the backfi eld for 395 yards and three touchdowns. He also was a captain for the team in his junior and senior years.

Linares is a native of Fort Madison and a 2002 graduate of Fort Madison High School, where he also played alongside Jennings. He now lives in Mount Pleasant.

Bergren joins the coaching staff after being a member of the program the past two years and playing for the Tigers last year. He was a reserve defensive lineman and linebacker and redshirted as a junior before playing in two games as a redshirt junior in 2010.

Bergren passed up a fi nal year of collegiate and graduated from IWC in the spring of 2011 with a degree in Elementary Education. In addition to being a member of the football team he was involved in other activities on campus and also was the 2010 Iowa Wesleyan Homecoming King. A native of Mediapolis, Iowa, and a graduate of Mediapolis High School, he currently resides in Mount Pleasant.

Brent Keaster – Tight EndsBrent Keaster is in his fi rst season as a coach for the Tigers and this year will help coach the team’s running backs and tight ends.

Keaster was a member of the IWC football team the past two seasons, though he was unfortunately never able to play for the Tigers. He was ineligible his fi rst year in 2009 and last year was ready to play before an injury in practice before the season resulted in season-ending knee surgery. Joe Stubbs – Defensive BacksJoe Stubbs returns for his fi fth season with the Tigers in 2011. He is back for his fourth season coaching the team’s defensive backs after serving as wide receivers coach in his fi rst year.

In 2008 Stubbs coached a defensive backfi eld that played a big role in the Tigers being the top pass defense in the Mid-States Football Association and one of the top pass defenses in the NAIA. Wesleyan allowed 145.3 yards per game through the air, sixth in the country. In 2009 and 2010 the Tiger pass defense again was the strongest part of the defensive unit, ranking tenth in the MSFA both years.

Stubbs, a native of Macon, Ga., returned to the IWC football program after a successful playing career with the Tigers from 1998-2002. He played numerous positions for the team throughout his career, includ-ing quarterback, running back, wide receiver and free safety, as well as being a return man on special teams. He fi nished his career with 3,174 all-purpose yards, including 946 yards rushing, 161 yards receiving and 2,067 yards on punt and kickoff returns. He also passed for a total of

1,070 yards during his four seasons at IWC.

Stubbs was named to the MSFA Midwest League First Team as a senior running back in 2002, a year in which he accounted for 518 rushing yards, 434 passing yards and 119 receiving yards. He also received MSFA Midwest League honorable mention accolades during his sophomore and junior seasons.

Stubbs is married to wife Stephanie and has two sons, Joe Jr. (13) and Carlos (2) and daughter Evelyn (1). The couple lives in Mount Pleasant.

TIGER COACHING STAFFTIGER COACHING STAFF

Jason LaRose – Defensive LineJason LaRose is in his third season on the Tiger coach staff and this year will coach the defensive line after coaching the team’s running backs from 2008-09.

In his fi rst season on the staff in 2008, LaRose assisted with an offensive unit that rushed for more than 1,500 yards, the most by an IWC team in four years. Running back Jaren Maybin rushed for 970 yards, the seventh-highest total in Wesleyan history, and was named First Team All-Mid-States Football Association Midwest League. The Tigers fi nished ninth in the MSFA in rushing and scored 17 rushing touchdowns, tied for seventh in the conference.

LaRose originally joined the IWC program in January 2008, coming from Ronald Wilson Reagan High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. He taught Spanish at the school and also was running backs coach for the football team. Before coming to Reagan, LaRose also was a teacher and football coach at Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham, N.C.

LaRose is a May 2006 graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., where he majored in Spanish with a minor in criminal justice. He played college football for the NCAA Division I-AA Mountaineers from 2003-05, playing at fullback and on the defensive line and special teams for ASU.

LaRose is a native of Lenoir, N.C. and graduated from West Caldwell High School in Lenoir, N.C. in 1997. After high school he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from Oct. 1998-2000, and he also attended Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in Lenoir from Jan. 2001-Dec. 2002. He is married to wife Mary, and the couple resides in Mount Pleasant.

Dave Lukens – Defensive CoordinatorDavid Lukens returns for his second year as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.

Lukens came to IWC after a successful career as a high school coach in Southeast Iowa. He was previously the head coach at Davis County High School in Bloomfi eld, Iowa, for the past 16 years, where he took a program that was one of the weakest in the state and turned it into a perennial contender for postseason play. He was named Southeast Iowa Coach of the Year in 1997 and most recently was named District 6 Coach of the Year in 2009.

Lukens brings over 30 years of experience as a high school coach to IWC. He coached high school football for 25 years and also coached basketball, track and baseball in the past. Lukens also was a high school physical education teacher for 28 years and also taught weight training and social studies.

Lukens is a 1979 graduate of Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., where he played football and base-ball for four years. He has been married to wife Cyndi for 33 years, and the couple has three children: sons Kenneth (29), who lives in Louisville, Ky., and Mathew (26), a senior at Drake University in Des Moines, and daughter Annie Goode (25), who is married and lives in Atlanta, Ga.

2011 TIGER FOOTBALL OUTLOOK2011 TIGER FOOTBALL OUTLOOKYear Two of Head Coach Kent Anderson’s turnaround of the Iowa Wesleyan College football team has rounded the fi rst turn and is on the backstretch, in the words of the coach.

The Tigers went 3-8 in their fi rst year under Anderson, a one-win improvement in overall record over the year before despite playing fi ve teams ranked in the top 15 nationally in their respective polls at the time of the Tigers’ game against them. More impressively, IWC fi nished 3-4 in the Mid-States Football Associa-tion Midwest League, tying for the program’s most wins ever in a season in league play since Wesleyan joined the MSFA in 1996.

After a 0-4 start that included three straight games against top 10 teams, IWC defeated a St. Francis (Ill.) team that would go on and fi nish 7-4 overall and third in the MSFA Midwest League, getting Anderson’s fi rst win on a dramatic fi nal drive and touchdown with 16 seconds left in the game. The Tigers generated some excitement offensively later in the season, getting involved in a pair of shootouts against Wil-liam Penn and Quincy, making a number of trick plays work in hanging with the nationally ranked Statesmen before losing 56-41, and then scoring 49 fi rst half points in a 62-50 win over Quincy.

Wesleyan was led by its pass-ing game, which was paced by Kevin McConnell. As a sophomore the Kansas City native threw for 2,251 yards and 16 touchdowns. His yardage total was the eighth-most in school history, and he also led the team in rushing with 348 yards and six scores. A two-year starter, McConnell returns for his junior year this year and is backed up by Brett Brodersen (Jr.-Visalia, Calif.), a former transfer from the University of Southern Mississippi who started last year’s opener and saw playing time in several other games.

McConnell’s favorite target for the past two years was Lawrence Moore, who completed his four-year career with the school record in receptions and the second-most receiving yards in IWC history. The Tigers do return a number of receivers who saw signifi cant playing time last year, including LiMichael

Peeples (So.-Conyers, Ga.), Chase Tackett (So.-Camarillo, Calif.), Matthew Vidales (Jr.-Los Angeles, Calif.), Thomas Barkei (Jr.-Aurora, Ill.) and Ridge Hobbs (So.-New London, Iowa). Peeples is the leading returning receiver after catching 17 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown.

The running back spot was one where the Tigers were shorthanded last year and will feature new faces this year. Brandon Harris (So.-Baton Rouge, La.) and Daniel Veal (Jr.-San Diego, Calif.) are a pair of junior college transfers and lead a group of newcomers at the position who will be expected to help Wesleyan improve on its average of just 53 rushing yards per game last year.

Offensive line is a position of considerable experience, as three starters return. Nate Schrock (Mediapolis, Iowa) and Tyler Stewart (Merritt Island, Fla.) are seniors who both have started much of the past three years, while fellow senior Eric Davis (Clemons, Iowa) is a two-year starter and a two-time Honorable

Mention All-MSFA Midwest League selection. In addition to the seniors, sopho-more James Daniel (Riverdale, Ill.) was the team’s fi rst reserve lineman last year and appeared in all 11 games. The fi fth line spot will come down to either a junior college transfer or a freshmen, with some of the top candidates including Douglas Fuentes (Jr.-Los Banos, Calif.), Jordan Padgett (Jr.-Las Vegas, Nev.), Josiah McClintock (Fr.-Rockford, Ill.) and Kevin Rubin (Fr.-Detroit, Mich.).

Iowa Wesleyan should be improved on defense after injuries and departures left the team extremely thin by the end of last season. An infl ux of junior college transfers will be expected to give the team size and maturity that the team has lacked with younger groups in recent years.

A pair of returning starters are back on the defensive line. Tarvis Gordon (Jr.-Sanford, Fla.) and Richard Silva (Jr.-Kirkland, Wash.) both were named honorable mention all-league as sophomores and combined for 68 tackles and 7 1/2 tackles for loss. Both are two-year starters, and they’ll be joined by newcomers including junior college transfers including Fekita Feki (Kea’au, Hawaii), Sale Fatu (Pago Pago, American Samoa) and Aaron Wagoner (Roseville, Calif.). Senior Kenrick Lawson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also returns as a rush end and was second on the team last year with 2 1/2 sacks, and sophomore Jamarco Clark (Conley, Ga.) should also see action in a similar role this year.

The linebacking spot will be seeking the return of two seniors who were felled by season-ending injuries last year. Cameron Jones (O’Fallon, Mo.) started the fi rst fi ve games last year before a broken ankle against St. Francis (Ill.) ended his season, and less than two weeks later Matthew Palmer-Newton (Camarillo, Calif.) suffered a broken leg in practice that ended his year. Newcomers who should make an impact at linebacker include Jesse Carbajal (Jr.-San Jose, Calif.), Carlos Morales (Fr.-Mustang, Okla.) and Tony Fuiava (Jr.-Pago Pago, American Samoa).

IWC will also have a number of new faces in the secondary, with Charles Thomas (Jr.-Fontana, Calif.) the lone returning starter. More junior college transfers expected to play roles include Marcus Bonner (Jr.-Lancaster, Calif.), Justin Hunnicutt (Jr.-San Francisco, Calif.), Napoleon Johnson (Jr.-San Jose, Calif.) and Carlos Richards (Jr.-Detroit, Mich.). Two other newcomers in-

clude familar names. Zach Ray (Jr.-Springfi eld, Ill.) moves to safety this year after playing as a slot receiver the past two years, while Christian Palmer-Newton (Fr.-Camarillo, Calif.) is the younger brother of linebacker Matthew and is in his fi rst year with the program.

Special teams will be led by Brodersen, who will serve as the team’s kicker and punter this year and was a former soccer player in high school. The Tigers will also be looking for new return men, and Harris, Veal and freshman Raul Becerill (Mission, Texas) will be among those competing for time back return-ing punts and kicks.

One thing in Wesleyan’s favor this year, at least on paper, is the schedule. Including a game against Wright State University’s club football team, the Tigers have seven home games and just four road games. IWC also faces just one team ranked inside the top 20 in the NAIA preseason top 25 poll, and after opening the season with two straight road games the Tigers will play seven of their fi nal nine games at home.

The Mid-States Football Association, an NAIA affi liated organization, will begin its 18th MSFA gridiron season this fall with 19 schools in fi ve midwestern states.

As has been the case in recent years, the MSFA will be in transition.Concordia University, located in Ann Arbor, Mich., will be the newest team in the Mideast League. Concordia, along with Siena Heights University of Adrian, Mich., were approved for MSFA membership in 2010. Siena Heights will begin Mideast League play in 2012.

A Chicago-based institution, Robert Morris University, became the 19th school admitted to the MSFA in 2011. Robert Morris will join the Midwest League in 2013 as McKendree University of Lebanon, Ill., and Quincy Univer-sity of Quincy, Ill., will move to NCAA Division II competition at the end of the 2011 season.

Thus, the MSFA Mideast League lineup for 2011 will feature Concordia and Quincy, which moves from the Midwest, as well as Saint Xavier University of Chicago, Ill.; Marian University of Indianapolis, Ind.; the University of Saint Francis of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Taylor University of Upland, Ind. The Midwest League will consist of Grand View University of Des Moines, Iowa; Waldorf College of Forest City, Iowa; Iowa Wesleyan College of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; St. Ambrose University of Davenport, Iowa; William Penn University of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Olivet Nazarene University of Bourbonnais, Ill.; Trinity International University of Deerfi eld, Ill.; and the University of St. Francis of Joliet, Ill.

Malone, McKendree and Walsh will play a majority of games against MSFA schools, but will not be eligible for the league championships because of membership applications with the NCAA.

Each MSFA team plays the other teams within its league plus crossover games against the other league. The champions of the two leagues receive automatic berths into the NAIA Championship playoffs.

The Chairman of the MSFA during the 2011-2012 school year will be Angie Fincannon, Athletic Director, Taylor University. James D. Houdeshell of Findlay, Ohio serves as the MSFA Commissioner and Larry Alter of Findlay, Ohio is the Mid-States Football Association Information Director. Weekly statistical reports, players of the week, news items and highlights are available on the MSFA website at www.mid-statesfootball.org.

Iowa Wesleyan College is a proud member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), a completely autonomous association currently administering programs of intercollegiate athletics for more than 300 full accred-ited colleges and universities of moderate enrollment.

The fundamental tenet of the NAIA is that intercollegiate athletics is an integral part of the total educational program of the institution. This belief is strongly refl ected in the governing documents, activities, and organizational structure of the association.

Established in 1940 as the Na-tional Association of Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB), the association expanded to include other programs in 1952. The NAIA became the fi rst intercollegiate sports governing body to provide championship op-portunities for both men and women when the women’s program was established Aug. 1, 1980.

NAIA Champions of Character Program The NAIA Champions of Charac-ter program is designed to instill

an understanding of character values in sport and provide practical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits. The fi ve core traits of the Champions of Character program are to promote respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issues more comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in North America and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative which emphasizes the tenets of character and integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIA Champions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environ-ments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

Also as of the fall of 2010, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Eligibility Center is respon-sible for determining the eligibility of fi rst-time NAIA student-athletes. The NAIA Eligibility Center takes registra-tions for any student interested in playing NAIA sports for the fi rst time in 2011-12 or after. Information about the NAIA Eligibility Center is available online at www.playnaia.org.

The Tigers have been to postseason games fi ve times in program his-tory, including three straight years during the Hal Mumme coaching era when the Tigers set numerous school and national offensive records. IWC made its lone visit to the NAIA playoffs in 1991, when the Tigers lost to Moorhead State (now Minnesota State University-Moorhead) in the opening round. During the Mumme era Iowa Wesleyan also twice appeared in the United Way Steamboat Classic in Burlington, Iowa, and picked up the school’s lone postseason win in the 1990 Steamboat Classic over Olivet Nazarene University. Other bowl opportunities for the Tigers have included the 1984 Sunfl ower Bowl in Winfi eld, Kan., and IWC’s fi rst-ever trip to a postseason game, the 1953 Corn Bowl in Blooming-ton, Ill.

Mike Wiggins holds the school record for most punting yards in a game on Oct. 18, 1986 against St. Ambrose. He would go on to

be a two-time NAIA All-American, the only Tiger so far to twice be named an All-American.

The 1953 IWC football team posted a 9-1 record that included an undefeated regular season and the school’s fi rst-ever trip to a bowl game. The Tigers that season also defeated William Penn in a game 103-0, setting team game marks for points scored and touchdowns that still stand today.
