When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want some-one with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In acrowded marketplace, however, identifying a qualified

professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Associationof Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations thathelp consumers identify builders and remodelers who have com-mitted themselves to continually improving their skills and beingcommitted to their profession. When a homeowner selects abuilder or remodeler with a NAHB professional designation, theyare getting a professional with superior training, practical experi-ence, and in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE BUILDER (CGB)The CGB designation means your builder has met prescribedstandards of practice, possess at least two years building industryexperience, has a proven track record of successful project man-agement, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledges to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. The CGBcourse is designed to emphasize business and project manage-ment skills as the key to a professional building operation.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR)The CGR course emphasizes the development of business man-agement skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation.Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed stan-dards of business practice, possess a minimum of five years remod-eling industry experience, have a proven track record of successfulremodeling projects, complete a comprehensive education curricu-lum, and pledge to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics.

CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST (CAPS)The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, businessmanagement and customer service skills essential for remodel-ers doing home modifications for the aging-in-place. TheNAHB Remodelers Council, in collaboration with the AARP,developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market specific information about working with older andmaturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE ASSOCIATE (CGA)The CGA certificate program offers associate members anopportunity to enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals ofthe home building industry. Modeled after the CGB curricu-lum, this designation is attained by completing three requiredand three elective courses which focus on improved manage-ment skills and business performance. The CGA designation ismaintained by completing one course annually.

CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP)The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified GreenProfessional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers andother industry professionals who incorporate green building prin-ciples into homes – without driving up the cost of construction.Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid backgroundin green building methods, as well as the tools to reach customers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driv-en green building solutions to the home building industry.

MASTER BUILDER (MB) / MASTER REMODELER (MR)The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Programcertification of the Greater Birmingham Association of HomeBuilders is to further enhance the professionalism of participatingmembers and to provide the consumer with contractors of thehighest professional standards. Members of the program mustpass a rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation asMaster Builder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by acommittee of their peers who review customer, supplier and sub-contractor references; check for any current or pending litigation;verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance cover-age; and validate financial stability. Membership is reviewed on ayearly basis and failure to meet the program’s requirements canwarrant disqualification from the program.

GRADUATE MASTER BUILDER (GMB)The ultimate designation for the building professional, theGraduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experiencedveterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, candidates must have the CGB designation, the CGR designa-tion, the CGA designation with five years of building experi-ence, or ten years of building experience and have completedthree CGB/CGR/CGA courses. GMB course topics includerisk management and insurance, negotiating, financial manage-ment and quality construction, to name a few. They are moreadvanced with in-depth instruction geared for experiencedbuilding professionals.

When the owners of this English Tudor decided to redo their roof and siding, they had two goals: first, they wanted to

be true to the home’s original style; second, they wantedto use sustainable, low-maintenance materials. To getthe job done, they turned to Precision Homecrafters.

The scope of project included providing added roofsupport, a new roof and siding. Planning objectives wereto improve the appearance of the roof and coordinate thesiding color and texture with the original architecture ofthe house. The original construction incorporated verticalcedar siding designed to look like board and baton siding.Because cedar requires a significant amount of mainte-nance in the way of paint and caulk, along with periodicrot in certain areas, woodpecker attacks and squirreldamage, an alternative material was sought.

Precision Homecrafters replaced the roof with a new35-year weathered wood dimensional roof that providesa better color blend with the home’s brick and exteriorsiding, plus has added the desired texture to the roofappearance. They also replaced rotting trim boards andwrapping with color-matched coil stock on the trim, andhidden vent soffits will keep all of the trim looking newfor years.

New vinyl cedar shakes are colored completelythrough a bonded ASA capping to provide the naturalweathered look. The manufacturing process incorporatesmolding from actual shakes, which makes it almostimpossible to tell it is a man-made material withouttouching it. Matching corners provide the look of origi-nal cedar shake installations that were done decades ago.

This exterior makeover met all of the homeowner’sneeds. The new roof and vinyl cedar siding will notonly allow the home to be easily maintained, but it willretain its well-kept look for years to come.

Called in to revamp a “handyman special”gone wrong, Case Design/Remodeling turnedthis amateur build out into a beautiful family

retreat. Faced with a space that had been poorlyframed, sheet rocked and, therefore, featured misaligned wall-to-ceiling joints and corners, Casestarted by gutting the space and reconfiguring andstraightening the walls.

By focusing on symmetrical elements in thedesign, the unbalanced and disorienting lines in evidence in the previous build out were eliminated. Now the roof and dormer lines are pleasant featuresthat make the room feel special. The build alsorevealed hidden structural problems that wereresolved. Careful reframing combined with addingknee walls brought things back into alignment.

They also added insulation and reset door locationsto accommodate the client’s furniture. Additionaldetails included converting a storage closet to kitchenette, adding a sun tunnel to the music room, and installing custom built-ins and pocket doors.

The results met the client’s goals of creating a largeentertainment area for watching movies and sportswith smaller areas at the perimeter for more individualactivities for various family members. Ten light Frenchdoors allow parents a quiet place to work while

keeping an eye on kids. Built-ins for TV equipment, dormer seating/storage and bookshelves add to thecharm and functionality of the space. The addition ofa small kitchenette reduces trips to the kitchen down-stairs and creates a grandparent suite with an adjacentbedroom and bath. Now that’s a handy remodel.

T he homeowners wanted to build thehome that they always dreamed about. But they didn’t want to move from the

home and neighborhood where they had livedfor 25 years. To get a more modern home withmore space for the family and friends, theydecided to double the space of their existing1,000 square foot home.

The original part of the house was redesignedto contain a new modern kitchen, large livingroom and a new bedroom and bath for thehomeowners’ daughter. The added 1,000square feet contain the homeowners’ “wish list”items including a new spacious master suite, aformal dining room, new laundry room, newkitchen pantry, a half bath and a man cave.

Finally, the home’s exterior also received afacelift. All existing windows were replaced anda new metal roof was added. Importantly, theresults exceeded the homeowners’ expectations.

Relocate or RemodelBY LORRAINE HART

The economic conditions of the past few years havethrown a monkey-wrench into plans and dreams for so many homeowners.

Unfortunately many of us have had to adjust our goals and re-plan our futures.

Page 19: 2011 FW Remodel Birmingham

incentive for remodeling instead of moving. There may be other advan-tages to staying in your current home. These could range from the actualblock you live on, the tranquility or busyness of the area, the proximity totransportation or even your immediate neighbors. We tend to notice thosethings that we don’t like, but it is equally important to not overlook theadvantages to staying where we are. In making a decision, it is usuallybest to write down all the pluses and minuses to your current locationand have your family do the same. You may find that there are significantadvantages to staying in your current home. In that case, remodeling willbe a better choice for you and your family.

With the real estate market in an unknownstate, people are really nervous aboutselling their houses to buy newer, bigger

homes. Many of us are making due with what wehave and are “waiting out” the economy. However, many more of us are doing remodeling projects toupgrade our current homes until things get better.

If you have not already done so, it may be time to re-focus and possibly re-plan. Fortunately, there are options that may be better than our original plans.

For those who need more space and thought theanswer was to sell and buy a larger home, perhapsthe solution to the space crunch is an addition orextension. This solution also works well for accom-modating merging families. Just as there are manyconsiderations in the decision to relocate or remod-el, there are many factors to consider in choosing toremodel your home in order to accommodategrown children or aging parents.

Perhaps the biggest issue in opting for extendedfamily living is that of privacy. With the properremodel, good communication and firm agree-ments, this option can have many significant finan-cial advantages. Although the costs of running alarger household will be more than those of a singlefamily unit, the costs will be less than those of twoseparate households.

Perhaps you want to downsize or prepare for ascaled back lifestyle or retirement of sorts. In thatcase you may want to prepare your home for thenext phase of your life. Just because you may beretiring from your business activities certainly does-n’t mean you will be retiring from life. This may bethe perfect time to make those changes in yourhome to suit your new life-style. This could includesetting up a home office, hobby rooms or even pri-vate guest quarters for visiting family and friends.Although guests won’t demand it, they will reallyappreciate a bedroom suite. If you are retiring andwant to remain in your house, be sure to look intothe many remodeling options for “aging in place.”

As you contemplate the advantages and disad-vantages of moving vs. remodeling, there are defi-nite location factors to consider. These factors willdepend on a number of things including your ageand the age of your children, proximity to activitiesthat you and your family enjoy, and the neighbor-hood itself. If you have children in school, you maywant to avoid disrupting them. This is a strong

Page 20: 2011 FW Remodel Birmingham

Here are a few questions to considerwhen deciding whether or not to remodel:

How much do you love your home andyour neighborhood? There is something tobe said for a great location. So do not for-get to factor great neighbors, good schools, convenience in terms of location, trafficpatterns, etc., into any decision you make.

If you decide to remodel, will you get areturn on your investment? “You need todecide what you want your remodel to

accomplish and whether or not it will addvalue to your home,” says Tripp Harris, vice president of Harris Coggin BuildingCompany in Vestavia Hills. “A well-donerenovation will improve your investment,so when the time does come to sell, yourhome will be worth significantly more.”

Do you want to go through the remod-eling process? “You also need to decide ifyou and your family want to live througha significant remodel,” he adds.

Can you live with four to six monthsof company who arrive at 7:30 in themorning and stay until 4:00 or later inthe afternoon?

Can you live without that kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, etc., whileremodeling takes place?

Or, can you move out for the dura-tion? (In some cases moving may be arequirement.)

Answering these questions will helpyou decide whether or not to remodel. Ifa careful analysis of your living situationindicates that it is time to sell, I urge youto find a home stager to assist in theprocess. A good home stager will giveyou an honest assessment of your home, coordinate any needed repairs, assist withthe re-arrangement of furniture and willhelp in the decoration of your home for afast sale at the best possible price. Andmake sure you factor the costs of relocat-ing into your decision, i. e. realtor fees, mortgage fees and the cost of moving.

According to Korey Nations, ownerof Natco Construction, LLC, inBirmingham, market conditions makethis a great time to remodel in andaround Birmingham. “The cost of con-struction is very economical right now,”he says. “Material prices and labor ratesare favorable. At the same time, sales ofexisting homes are slow and it tends tobe a buyers’ market.”

“In addition, people often find theystill need to remodel even after purchas-ing a new home,” Nations says. “Somake sure you take that possibility intoconsideration before making a finaldecision.” n

LUXURY SHOWERSShowers are becoming larger and the Hays andLarimer projects were no exception. They bothexpanded their showers significantly as part of theirremodels. Performance showering options like handshowers, rain heads, his and hers valves and bodysprays have moved past trendy and into the main-stream and they are well represented in these proj-ects. Shower seating is moving away from the tiledbox approach to floating designs which allow formore foot room. The Larimers used the same gran-

Empty nest or opportunity? It all depends on how youlook at it. Alane and Rick Larimer and Clare and William Hays representan increasing number of couples in the Birmingham market. As theirchildren successfully take wing, they’re taking the opportunity to enjoya little well earned luxury with a master bath remodel.

LUXURY, STYLE AND PERSONALITYThe Birmingham market reflects the national trend toward more luxuri-ous, customized baths. Clients are exploring a broad range of design pos-sibilities to create a personalized space that reflects their personality. Some of the elements they are incorporating include:

ite from the vanity top for their seat. The Haysreflect another mini-trend which is foregoing thefull seat for a smaller foot rest in the corner to makeleg shaving more comfortable.

DEEP TUBS Those who enjoy a tub bath are increasingly select-ing styles that have a smaller footprint than thesoaker tubs of the 1980s,but with taller sides. Thenet effect is a deep, full-body soak with less water. As with the shower, hand-showers can add func-

tionality for bathing and make cleaning easier. Jetted whirlpool tubs areno longer the de facto standard that they were 25 years ago but for thosewho enjoy them, the pump system on current models like the Hays select-ed are much easier to keep clean.

STONE, PORCELAIN AND GLASS TILE These materials dominate the bath because they’re beautiful and theyfunction well in a wet environment. What has changed is the explosion ofoptions of size, shape and finish. Very large floor tile (the Larimer’s tileare 21") are beautiful and create fewer grout lines for cleaning. Whilethese new options provide more design possibilities, they also call formore design skill to get a cohesive result.

HEATED FLOORS AND TOWEL RACKS These items are a perfect offset to the tile elements which by their naturefeel cool to the touch. The Hays and Larimers both selected systems withprogrammable thermostats to save energy and make their first footstepscomfortable on a cold morning.

UPGRADED LIGHTING More (and more flattering) lighting is a foundational element in a goodbath project. The Hays and Larimers added recessed lights for general illumination along with upgraded surface mount fixtures at key dressinglocations. The Larimers chose to mirror mount their vanity fixtures whichprovides a flattering light as well as highlights the beauty of the fixtureitself. The Hays included a lighted make up mirror in Clare’s dressing area.

VALUE Over the past two years, attention to value has increased for all projecttypes, including the luxury bath. According to Tom Coan, owner of CaseDesign/Remodeling,

“Clients who in the past might have done a master suite addition are now choosing to work inside the existing master bath / master closet footprint,” says Coan. “The key to success is careful, creativedesign and allocating space very thoughtfully to the things that mattermost to the client.”

Both the Larimers and the Hays ended up with more open and functional designs than they had before without adding floor space.Re-using instead of replacing is another growing ethic with remodelersand clients alike. For example, the Hays repurposed cabinets in the

master closet rather than purchase an expensivecloset system and the Larimers retained their wallmount toilet that looked right with their designand functioned well. n

When these empty nesters found themselves with theirhome all to themselves, they decided it was time to dress up theirnest. Their goal was to create a warm and inviting kitchen wherethey could entertain family and friends.

We do a lot of family get-togethers in our home and, with our children’s growing families, it was becoming nearly impossible tohost everyone comfortably,” says the woman of the house. “Not

to mention we were dealing with a kitchen built in the 1970s,” she laughs. So the plan was to turn the existing space into a large, spacious kitchen

with modern conveniences and new state-of-the-art appliances. Originally, the homeowners hoped to accomplish the project within the originalroom’s square footage, but it quickly became apparent they would needmore space to accomplish their remodeling goals.

A SMALL STRUCTURAL MODIFICATIONWorking with Mike Kelley, CGR and owner of Counter Dimensions inPelham, the decision was made to “bump” the front of the house out four

feet. This move added 100 square feet to the size ofthe kitchen and made the remodel workable.

Other design challenges involved working aroundthe back of a brick fireplace that ran along an inte-rior wall (and was not moving), as well as selectingfinishes for cabinets and countertops that matchedthe original kitchen’s tile floor. Because the tile ranthroughout the home, it too needed to remain inthe new space.

According to the homeowner, the final results ofthe remodel are amazing. “The new kitchen iseverything we hoped it would be,” she says. “It’snot only beautiful, but it’s really functional as well.”

A BEAUTIFUL NEW KITCHENUpon entering the home, visitors can access thekitchen from the foyer. Walking into the room, tothe left, is a spacious dining area bathed in natural

THANKS TO A REFERRAL“Counter Dimensions was instrumental in helping us achieve the goalswe had for the new kitchen,” the homeowner says. “A friend who hadrecently remodeled her kitchen used them and she recommended them tous,” she says. “We talked to a few other firms, but we really liked CounterDimensions. Granite countertops in Golden Persia providesignificant work and serving space throughout, including forming the top of the desk. The wall behind the island includes plenty ofcounter space, a stainless steel double wall oven andthe refrigerator/freezer (both from KitchenAid). This layout is especially functional for working inthe kitchen.

The homeowner says the kitchen is clearly thehub of the home. “Everyone congregates aroundthe island and whomever is cooking can be part ofthe conversation,” she says.

Finally, the bump out also allowed the homeown-ers to renovate the front of the home with stone,

It had been 15 years since we last remodeled the kitchen and it was a bit outdated,” says Selene. “An island installed during the previousremodel was in the wrong area creating a bottleneck, so we wanted

to redesign the space for better traffic flow.”Additionally, the couple wanted to update the room’s style to keep up

with current design trends. They drew their inspiration from HGTV andDIY television, as well as from friends who have recently remodeled.

PROJECT SCOPEUltimately, the scope of project was to completely remodel the kitchen.Design and planning objectives were to relocate the entry from the garagedirectly to the kitchen without going through the laundry room and tocreate a more open and user friendly-space that flowed better with twocooks in the kitchen.

Remodeling VeteransMoving the entry way from the garage to the kitchen instead of the

laundry room required moving the wall that separated the two rooms by15 inches. This eliminated unused space in the laundry that served as awalkway and allowed the laundry room to be reconfigured into a slightlysmaller area while maintaining the same amount of usable space.

A new furniture-style china cabinet, that provides additional storage in the base cabinet, features glass doors for decorative display and spacefor a TV is the focal point in the kitchen while eating at the new peninsu-la bar (which allowed the island to be eliminated). This larger peninsula provides plenty of room for additional prep, eating and doubles as a largeserving bar when entertaining.

A doorway leading from the kitchen to foyer was closed allowing wallspace for a new gas cook top, double ovens, a warming drawer and refrig-erator. Custom wood cabinets incorporated large drawers for easy accessto pots and pans.

The butternut finish on the cabinets complimented with new granitecountertops, terracotta colored walls and white trim have created a muchlarger feeling space. A wall between the kitchen and den was also openedup, making the living and kitchen areas more cohesive. A combination ofrecessed lights, pendant lights, under counter lights and indirect light overthe cabinets provide the right illumination for all occasions.

A wet bar with ice maker is convenient to the kitchen, den and outdoorliving areas including the porch, deck and swimming pool. Finally, hard-wood floors were installed in the kitchen and in the master bedroom onthe first floor.

LIVING WITHOUT A KITCHENThe entire project took about three months, which meant Selene and Philhad to be creative and establish a “satellite kitchen” for preparing meals.“We moved the kitchen into an upstairs bedroom complete with coffee pot,

toaster oven, crock pot and portable microwave,”Selene says. “It reminded me of going tailgating atfootball games,” she laughs. “We called it ‘indoortailgating.’”

THE RIGHT CONTRACTORThe Pattersons hired George Williams and PrecisionRemodeling for their project. Precision had previous-ly remodeled the couple’s master bathroom to greatsuccess, so hiring the firm was an easy decision.

“Not only did they do a great job on our bath-room, but we’ve known George for years as a friendand fellow church member, so it was an easy andcomfortable decision to go with Precision,” Selenecomments. “I knew they would do an excellent jobbased on our previous experiences.”

“George had a very precise schedule from whichthe Precision team worked and everything happenedright on time,” she adds. “You know before the proj-ect starts what the sequence of events will be andthat makes the entire project go much smoother.”

If I had to give advice to another homeownerthinking about remodeling, it would be to plan, plan, plan,” Selene emphasizes. “Knowing what’sgoing to happen and when it’s going to take placeeliminates the stress of remodeling and makes theentire process more pleasurable.”

“We’re very happy with the results,” Selene concludes. “Our new kitchen is even better than we ever imagined it could be.” n

Our remodeling project required a lot of trust. As an exteriorremodel, you don't really know what exactly you're in for until theold exterior comes off and you see what the extent of damageis underneath. Chris was great every step of the way, offeringus options and advice on which option he thought made themost sense from a quality vs cost perspective. In the end, I feel like we not only ended up with a great looking

house, but a more energy efficient house as well. Chris had just gottenhis Green Builder Certification so we incorporated a lot of what he had learned into

our project. The "green" part of the project began with an in-depth home energy audit which helpedus to make more informed decisions like, what type of insulation to use and where. Today my 20+year old home exceeds the requirements of an Energy Star rated home! And we are loving theresulting power bills – we have a 4200 sq foot home, keep the temperature between 74 and 76 and our bill with Alabama power for June, 2011 (remember how unusually hot it was – the highs were from 95 to 99 degrees for 20 out of 30 days) was only $288.88! ~ Scott Wepfer
