Since 1984, professional street artists from around the world have gathered in Churchill Square to delight and

amuse audience members of all ages and backgrounds. Over the years, millions of spectators from here and

abroad have flocked to the Square to have their funnybones tickled at this fun, family-oriented festival.

It’s a highly-anticipated time of year when street acts, rovers, musicians, dancers, clowns, stilt

walkers and puppeteers transform Edmonton’s downtown core into the ultimate play zone.

Thank you to the many dedicated organizers, volunteers and sponsors for working so hard behind the scenes to ensure that performers and audiences alike

can enjoy this outrageous, over-the-top festival!

International Street Performers Festival.

Street corners and city squares around the world have long been the original stage for artists

and performers. There is a certain charm and uniqueness in having no barrier between performer

and audience; instead of merely observing, we become part of the show. These attributes make

Edmonton’s International Street Performers Festival a unique form of artistic expression that is never

the same two years in a row.

Events like this do not happen without a core of dedicated volunteers and organizers. To all those involved in planning and organizing this year’s

Street Performers Festival – thank you! Your hard work helps to ensure a memorable experience for

spectators and performers alike.

ProduCEr’s rEm a rks

It’s time to escape to someplace magical. For 10 days each July, downtown Edmonton becomes a world of

wonder. I’d like to kick off the festivities by welcoming both the community and the astounding company of artists who are flying in from around the planet to Sir

Winston Churchill Square for StreetFest 2011.

After 27 years, the daily performance schedule is a trick the amazing staff and volunteers pull off at

the Festival daily (and flawlessly). Check out what is coming up on the Square at the Edmonton Journal Information Station and at our Greeting Gate on the Southwest corner of the site. (You can also follow us

on Twitter for updates throughout the day!) Schedules are modified regularly according to the crowds and

weather conditions.

It’s always a pleasure to say there is no ticket required to access the Square. It is you, the audience member, who decides the true value of the performance at the end of each show by making a contribution directly to the artists. I think you’ll find yourself emptying your

pockets for our fantastic line-up this year! Edmonton audiences have an extraordinary reputation for

generousity, as well as wholehearted participation and enthusiasm, making Edmonton StreetFest a Festival that’s praised by street performers around the world.

Our 2011 volunteer slogan is: Any more balls in the air, and I’d be a juggler. How very true! My eternal

appreciation goes out to the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival board of directors,

volunteers and staff for the truly inspiring efforts they contribute to the Festival each year. These individuals might not be juggling fire, but it does take a certain kind of magic to execute a Festival of this size and

quality with such zest.

Additionally, I’d like to thank the City of Edmonton through the Edmonton Arts Council, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for their vital ongoing support. Together with many supportive local businesses who understand the value of wonder, they help us play in the streets

every July.

usa Alakazam is also known as”The Human Knot“…

an amazing international street and circus entertainer. He presents a 100% high-energy show that will have you reeling with laughter and twisting in your seat. Audiences the world over have been left breathless by Al’s incredibly freaky body contortions, cheeky comedy and ridiculous, sky-high feats of danger. A mix of traditional

vaudeville, circus sideshow and twisted comedy, The Human Knot is a self-contained freak-show

suitable for the whole family.

tHE BE artHurs edmonton

The Be Arthurs are a ukulele cover band who formed in the summer of 2005 and first entered

into the “busking loop” at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. After much success at the Fringe, The Be Arthurs opened

for a band... that was opening for a band... that was opening for a band at a local hot spot in hometown Edmonton. They’ve played gigs at

opening night galas, fundraisers, variety shows and several live music venues around Edmonton including The Winspear Centre. The Be Arthurs are Ryan Parker on a Soprano “Greg Bennet”

ukulele, Sheldon Elter on a matching Baritone, and drummer Bob Rasko. They are thrilled to be back

on the Square for 2011!

Bob is happy to be performing in Kids’ World this year. He was first able to bring together

his unique method of storytelling for Concrete Theatre’s Sprouts Festival, and has since been sharing cacophonic creations for young audiences at Edmonton’s Fringe Festival, in schools around the city, and in his backyard with his sons. A very proud Edmonton-based actor/musician, he is a graduate of MacEwan’s Theatre Arts and Music programs, and founding member of Ribbit RePublic where most recently he co-created, and performed in an adaption of several Grimm’s Brothers Tales called Grimmer than Grimm. Bob is also appearing at the Festival with Edmonton’s official ukulele rock cover band The Be Arthurs.

CIndy lou rEqua whitecourt

Cindy Lou Requa has painted thousands of decorations on thousands of children,

spreading delight across Western Canada. She has been a “regular” at local events for

over 20 years and looks forward to StreetFest – and all the bright and shiny faces it brings

- every July.

It’s a bird—it’s a plane—it’s an aerialist! StreetFest veterans Lyne Gosselin and Annie

Dugan are back - along with newcomer Mackenzie Baert - to take you on a Caribbean

holiday. Join them as they journey over the Atlantic Ocean, a place where sharks fly,

crabs contort, and mermaids spin. But watch out for the pirates! Firefly Theatre & Circus has captivated audiences nationwide and

beyond with their unique fusion of aerial arts and theatre. Under the Sea is their fast-paced spectacular show that is fun for the whole family.

tHE EtCH-a-skEtCH guy

usa Lee Zimmerman is likely the world’s fastest Etch-A-Sketch artist...and he’s funny too!

He creates portraits, cartoons and more on the world’s greatest toy. Lee first started

performing at parties ten years ago in Hollywood for special events including “The

Seinfeld Final Wrap Party,” and Guns ‘N’ Roses “End Of Tour Party.” He’s also worked for

Demi Moore and her kids and a host of other celebrities. Catch him in action on the Square

and learn his Etch-A-Sketch secrets at the Be Your Own Busker Workshops.

darrIn HagEn edmonton

Darrin’s “first time” at StreetFest was in 1994, “the summer I dyed my hair blonde,”

he notes. He is an award-winning writer, composer and performer whose been playing at StreetFest for over a decade. Looking back,

he’s literally brought dozens of delightful characters to the Festival. This year, Darrin

can again be found at our Late Night Madness presentations, providing a musical soundtrack

to the hilarity.

dan tHE Balloon man

edmonton Dan the Balloon Man has been bringing

smiles to young and old for over a decade and is thrilled to be back with StreetFest for the third year in a row. His unique blend of comedy and unparalleled skill at the art of latex manipulation have made him a hotly sought after performer all over Western

Canada. Dan boasts “one of the best balloons you have ever seen…or I’ll eat a bug!”

gustavo tHE ImPossIBIlIst

calgary See the flames, smell the fear... wear the

pantyhose! That’s the motto of the infamous Gustavo the Impossibilist. Watch as Gustavo

attempts feats of unrealized foolishness for your pleasure and amazement. From the little known ‘Casey Cartwheel’ to the

infamous ‘Flaming Stilts Escape of Death,’ Gustavo is sure to fail at every outrageous

stunt he puts before the audiences’ unbelieving eyes! Children and young people split their sides laughing at his outrageous

antics and you will too.

HarvEy and IdaHo edmonton

In their partnership, Harvey and Idaho have been involved with Kids’ World at StreetFest for the past nine years and are welcoming

their tenth with glee. Other credits include the Comedy Festival, Night of Artists, Edmonton Fashion Week, InterFear Arts Festival, and

LoveStyles Fashion Fundraisers. Set/costume design credits include Sterling Award winners,

Lobster Telephone (Panties Production), Jeremy Fisher (Concrete Theatre) as well

as Swallow (Azimuth Theatre).The boys are also busy with interior design projects and the coordination of a number of fabulous fundraisers for local theatre and charities.

HIlBy tHE skInny gErman jugglEr

berlin Hilby the Skinny German Juggler is a

comedic circus stunt performer. Originally from Berlin, Hilby eventually realized that Germany was just not going to get any funnier. After a brief career as a social

worker, Hilby felt prepared to move into a line of work making people laugh. The New York Times calls Hilby, “Rivetingly Obsurd.”

One cannot help but be charmed by his impeccable timing and extreme skills. You will find Hilby atop unicycles of all shapes

and sizes manipulating objects ranging from bowling balls to hedge trimmers.

A veteran actor and street performer, Jan Streader transforms from ZuZu the Clown

to Mrs. Collywobbles, the cockney cleaning lady; from Antoinette the Fairy Godmother to Professor McComical the wacky wizard; to Suzanna Banana who sings, and dances everything from Conga to Cuban to Calypso.

Jan has enchanted people of all ages, touring Alberta for more than a decade.

jamEs o’sHEa vancouver

Playwright, actor, comedian and juggler, James O’Shea [aka Chairman Jim] lives in fabulous

Vancouver. He has traveled the world to exotic places like Egypt, Israel, Ireland and Cyprus showing audiences things they have never seen before—and occasionally, things they never want to see again. He was recently

wowing crowds down at Robson Square for the Olympics. But right now, he’s right here. He believes that even though you may not have a

life in the circus, you should always have a little circus in your life. Catch his show on Churchill Square or learn the tricks of his trade at the Be

Your Own Busker Juggling Workshops.

Brush in hand and inspiration on side, the popular Jacquie Paul returns with her special

brand of magical face painting. She has participated at 25 editions of StreetFest over

its history. Every face is an original work of art that you won’t want to wash away. As a sculptor and visual artist, Jacquie’s participation is sought after by festivals

across the country. Show your true colours and enjoy a visual kaleidoscope you just

won’t forget.

Jesse and Amber will be roaming the Festival as kooky characters that are sure to make

your belly ache with delight. An actor, dancer and voice-over artist, Jesse has performed

for many major theatre companies including Theatre Network, Concrete Theatre, Northern

Light Theatre, Mayfield Dinner Theatre, Catalyst Theatre and The Citadel to name a few. Amber is an actor, choreographer, dancer and founder/co-artistic director of Dammitdance Theatre. In 2004 Amber cofounded the Expanse Movement

Arts Festival.

The Kamikaze Fireflies (Rob Williams and Casey Martin) are a fire breathing, cube

spinning, whip cracking, and stilt walking duo that blend vaudeville with sketch comedy, and circus skills with stand up. Join this tangle of absurdity and audience interaction as they try to catch lightning in a bottle and bring peace

and joy to the world at affordable prices.

Lady Dolphin is dedicated to providing the best possible experience for those who

surrender to the art of face and body painting. She is family focused and continues to study ways of improving her unique one-of-a-kind designs by observing natural surroundings

and some of the most creative face and body painters on the planet. Face painting requires

a willingness to use imagination and Lady Dolphin has lots of that. She’ll transform the ’you’ that you see every day in the mirror…

Linda Karenko has brought wacky characters (Sheriff Winnie Dean, the Wiener Queen, Det.

Sgt. Terri Burke, Madame de la Loon, Vespa and Festival Warrior) to life for over 20 years. A veteran

street performer throughout Alberta, Linda’s other credits include Edmonton’s Winterlight

Festival, Grand Cache’s Deathfest, and Edmonton Tourism’s representative in Beverly Hills, Mexico City and London, England. Be prepared to have

lots of fun with Linda’s characters, and watch as they become your new BFF.

the artists StreetFest is a curated Festival. This means

all of the artists you see on our site are performing at the exclusive invitation of our Artistic Producer Shelley Switzer, who works year-round to bring you the best of the best. We all have a role to play: we invite them,

they perform and you pay them!

festival site Our main Festival site is Sir Winston Churchill Square at 99 Street and 102 A Avenue. It’s the heart of downtown in Edmonton’s Arts District,

right in front of City Hall.

Bottled water is available for purchase. Vendors sell a wide range of festival-style snacks and beverages. Warning: if your

cellphone rings during a show you may be shamed mercilessly. Please turn off your phone during performances. Videotaping

performances is not permitted.

And if you’re coming with a group, ensure anyone requiring supervision is easily

recognizable – matching hats, shirts or wristbands work wonderfully. Daycares, take this opportunity to teach children how to pay

for art – load ‘em up with loonies! And be sure to take in the fun at Kids’ World and Be Your Own Busker in the ATB Financial Big Tent.

usa As a youth, this self-proclaimed heavy metal magician focused on his two passions: heavy metal and magic. As is the case with us all, Nigel grew to adulthood and was confronted with choosing his career path. As his love for metal and magic had only grown over time, and since he had no desire to wear a suit,

Nigel decided to devote his life to both his arts, founding the magicial heavy metal cover band, Lordz of Illuzzion. In 1998, following a sold out performance, the other three Lordz abruptly quit the band. Nigel was devastated by this surprising and untimely break-up. Driven by

rage and passion and channeling the spirits of Houdini and Ozzy Osbourne, he put the pieces of his life back together and thus emerged The

Heavy Metal Magician. With the skills of an alchemist, Nigel blended heavy metal music and the world of magic, creating the unique genre: “heavy magic.” Be prepared to have your mind blown, and ladies: please control yourselves.

Led Zimmerman (aka The Puppet Guy) is the host and creator of the most amazing and

unique marionette show: HOLLYWOODSTOCK. He combines his love of pop culture and his

distaste for ordinary puppets into a miniature Rock and Roll Revue complete with tiny

guitars, amps, drums and the biggest names in the history of music. You’ll see Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, and even Elvis (back from the dead out of his Cadillac Coffin.) Led is an

LA legend who has performed privately for everyone from Frank Zappa to Hugh Hefner,

Paula Abdul to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Don’t miss him at StreetFest 2011.

P’ wan thailand

P’Wan’s first visit to Edmonton’s StreetFest in 1996 inspired her to transform her passion for Thai art into a talent for face painting.

Traveling from her home across the ocean, she is delighted to bring her unique artistry

Rhythm Speaks is a dance crew that represents the Hip Hop way of life in its true essence by destroying boundaries and stereotypes about

Hip Hop and their First Nations culture. The crew fuses traditional pow-wow dance moves with B’Boying/B’Girling in order to strike a balance

between their roots and those of Hip Hop. Their main focus is to share what they have learned

over the years and help educate the public about what Hip Hop truly stands for...peace, love, unity

and having fun. See their amazing shows on the Square throughout the Festival and learn

some of their dance moves in the Be Your Own Busker Workshops.

Ron’s first StreetFest was in 1989. Since then, he’s performed his magic show many

times, presented a live “Mermaid Sideshow,” performed in “The UnNaturals” with his son and daughter, and has been involved on the

StreetFest Board. This year, Ron can be found sneaking around the site doing sleight of hand magic and joining us on some of our Comedy

Cares visits.

Rubberband Boy.” So funny, he should have been twins! A master of rubberband-ology and inventor of ‘The Human Catapult’ (the

largest rubber band you’ll ever set eyes on). Originating from New Zealand, his Guinness World Record acts of facial contortion have

now been viewed in 15 countries. The Alpha, The Omega and The Rubber–Band Boy!

The Silly People present The Human Piñata ….an interactive adventure filled with the feeling

stress reliever. Who doesn’t like whacking another human being in public? Whatever your

motivation, the Human Piñata guarantees to taunt and make you feel silly! (Actual guarantee, not a guarantee.) In addition to their roving piñata act, The Silly People with Ana Shepherd are here to teach you their cool circus and juggling skills

at our Be Your Own Busker Workshops.

Silver Elvis is the most unique spin on Elvis you will ever see. A creation of performance artist Peter Jarvis, this robotic statue of The

King, (not unlike Elvis himself), is cash-activated. (Thank you. Thank you very much.)

In a world of 58,000 Elvis impersonators, there is only one true Elvis simulator. Silver Elvis sightings have been made from New

Zealand to Ukraine, Malasia to Ireland. Join in the fun as teens freak, grandmothers swoon,

and toddlers dance with the king of bling.

Zü-Ma: Talent to Amüz is Cindi Zuby (Zü) and Lynette Maurice (Ma). This zany duo performs puppetry, music, family events, theatre and workshops throughout Alberta. Join them in Kids’ World for “Amüz-ing Adventures” – a puppet and music variety show for all ages. You might also catch them in a banjo duet

with Whyte Yo-küm, the only Country-Western performing egg at the Festival.

Tomko Lamb is a hammered dulcimer player from Calgary. His albums are a mix

of guitar, piano, and vocals on the one hand, and hammered dulcimer instrumentals on the other. When he plays live, busking on the street, it’s solely with his hammered

dulcimer. StreetFest is excited to welcome Tomko – and his sweet sounds - back to the

streets of Edmonton.

Sublimit is the combined astonishing talents of Guts- a professional circus acrobat – and

Yoko- a highly skilled gymnast and dancer. In 1995, they made their performance debut in

Japan. Since then they have toured extensively around the world perfecting their unique

performing style. Don’t miss their amazing hand-to-hand balancing act with an Asian flair.

See what you’d look like as a fireman, a 70’s rockstar or a Mongol Warlord! At Simon’s caricature booth, you’ll be able to have

your portrait drawn in whatever situation or get-up your heart desires. Drawing from classic cartoonists like Bill Watterson and Gary Larson, Simon is a 25-year-old artist

currently living in Edmonton. This is his fourth year at StreetFest.
