FEBRUARY: Women gathering at the National Conference on Women in Politics in Sudan, 2007. National and international actors have promoted women’s participation and decision making towards their 25 per cent share in politics, required by the CPA.

MARCH: An estimated 60,000 enumerators fanned out across Sudan in April 2008 to conduct the fifth National Population and Housing Census, required ahead of the 2009 elections as well as the referenda in Southern Sudan and Abyei in 2011. The Central Bureau of Statistics put the country’s total population at 39,154,490, of which 30,060,954 (76.8 per cent) live in the north and 8,564,524 (21.9 per cent) in the south.

APRIL: Sudan held national elections in April 2009, the first country-wide poll in 24 years. The massive logistical exercise was supported by UNMIS’ delivery of ballots to otherwise inaccessible, remote locations in Southern Sudan by helicopter.

MAY: Since the coming of peace, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees have been flowing back into Southern Sudan and The Three Areas. Almost 268,000 IDPs and refugees are estimated to have returned through organized means (including about 93,800 IDPs and 174,000 refugees) from the signing of the CPA until June 2010. Total spontaneous returns of IDPs and refugees are estimated at over 2.1 million.

JUNE: Joint Integrated Units (JIUs) being deployed to the Abyei area following an eruption of violence between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in May 2008. The CPA stipulates that JIUs made up of an equal number of SPLA and SAF soldiers be set up to act as security forces until the southern self-determination referendum in 2011.

JULY: About 1,000 Abyei residents celebrated the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s decision on the boundaries of the Abyei Area in May 2009 after the two CPA parties referred the case to the court.

AUGUST: Oil-producing fields near Bentiu, Unity State, Southern Sudan. The CPA stipulates that at least 2 per cent of net oil revenue be allocated to the state or region where it is produced. Remaining revenues from oil produced in the south are divided equally between the National Government and Government of Southern Sudan.

SEPTEMBER: The Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of former combatants in Sudan’s northern and southern armies was launched in Ed Damazin, Blue Nile State, on 10 February 2009. More than 180,000 members of the military, including women and children, are expected to take part in the programme over a period of at least three years.

OCTOBER: Sudan’s long-running civil war left numerous landmines on routes, in villages and wells, and across arable land in Southern Sudan, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states as well as along parts of the eastern borders with Eritrea and Ethiopia. As of September 2010, 83 per cent of the known hazardous areas had been cleared by the UN Mine Action Office and its partners.

NOVEMBER: Heightening of Roseires Dam, Blue Nile State. The facility is a main source of Sudan’s hydroelectric power and also provides irrigation water for the Gezira Plain.

DECEMBER: Education for children in Southern Sudan, including girls, is one of the greatest peace benefits. But challenges remain, including school fees in many areas, a lack of teachers, and deteriorated school buildings.

لألمم املتحدة وشركائه بتطهير حوالي 83% من املناطق املعروفة بوجود األلغام فيها.

أهم مصادر اخلزان من يعد األزرق. النيل والية الروصيرص في تعلية خزان نوفمبر: الطاقة الكهرومائية في السودان، إضافة لتوفيره ملياه الري لسهول اجلزيرة.

ديسمبر: يعد تعليم األطفال في جنوب السودان، مبن فيهم البنات، من أعظم فوائد املصاريف منها مواجهتها، من البد التي التحديات بعض هنالك أن غير السالم.

A look at major achievements

The Comprehensive Peace Agreement, also known as the Naivasha Agreement, was signed between the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and the Government of Sudan in Nairobi, Kenya in 2005, ending more than two decades of civil war.

The agreement set forth a path for the former foes’ peaceful coexistence, of which numerous milestones have been met.

Sudan will have arrived at the end of the interim period with the referenda, scheduled for 9 January 2011, on whether Southern Sudan remains united with the north or secedes, and if Abyei wishes to join the north or south.

من بنوده بنجاح.سيصل السودان لنهاية الفترة االنتقالية بإجراء االستفتاء المقرر تنظيمه في 9 يناير 2011 ليقرر فيه جنوب السودان ما إذا كان سيظل متحداً مع الشمال أم

سينفصل، وما إذا كانت منطقة أبيي ترغب في االنضمام للشمال أم للجنوب.
