Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, serving approximately 1,100 students.

Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educat-ing citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. Defiance’s spirit of service through leadership sets us apart.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community In-volvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years, DC has been named a Military Friendly School for provid-ing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to pro-vide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural aware-ness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization; and study abroad programs.

Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Pro-gram, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood.

Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organi-zations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athlet-ics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan:

On behalf of our wonderful Defiance College family, I am honored to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game.

Defiance College is very much a college on the move. This year we welcomed the largest num-ber of incoming freshmen in recent memory, up significantly from last year. In fact, 44 percent of our applicants this past year came from outside Ohio, representing 42 states and two territories. They came to Defiance College for many reasons. We are a small college with a real family feel. We offer a wide range of academic majors and intercolle-giate and intramural athletic activities. We provide individual attention through our innovative Personal Success Plan (PSP) process in which students work with a team of people at the College to develop their own personalized strategic plans for success in college and beyond. Our wonderful faculty provide a stimulating academic environment as well as serving as personal mentors for students. Our coaches train student-athletes to excel in their sports while also giving them the guid-ance and support necessary to help them become committed students and community leaders.

In fact, we are especially proud of the ways in which our student-ath-letes continue and further DC’s commitment to community service. Student-athletes serve in many different capacities, from volunteering to assist senior citizens and children, to helping to run, manage, and operate our path-breaking new student-run non-profit, Project 701. This non-profit gives students an opportunity not just to engage in volun-tarism, but also to create, develop, run, and supervise a wide range of community-service projects.

If you are reading this while you are on campus, you are probably close by the site for construction of our new field house. We are very pleased that all members of our DC community will soon be enjoying this field house, which will include extensive practice and workout facilities for athletes and non-athletes alike. We are particularly pleased that by building this field house, Defiance can help stimulate economic development in our community while providing a premier athletic facility in northwest Ohio.

I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know our student-athletes both as members of a team and as individuals. They are an impressive bunch, who bring a wonderful level of excitement and energy to every-thing they undertake. And they also have tremendous potential. It has been my pleasure to get to know and interact with them on a regular basis. I encourage you to seek opportunities to meet them as well.

I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organiza-tions, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations.

We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today and hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events which we are so proud to host.

We hope you enjoy the game. Go Jackets!

Sincerely,

Mark C. Gordon, PresidentSERRICK CAMPUS CENTER

DC BASKETBALL 2010-2011

Nowhere else will you find students committed to their communities like Defi-ance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement.

Members of all Defiance men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports teams par-ticipate in service projects. Many student-athletes at DC have taken leadership roles in service initiatives on campus and in the community, and several have also received scholarships for international projects.

The men’s basketball team recently continued its ongoing mission of impacting the surrounding community by participating in the 13th-Annual Walk with Sunshine in Maumee, Ohio. The Walk with Sunshine helped to raise funds used for providing

residential, vocational and family support services to more than 1,000 people with developmental disabilities. The event had more than 1,400 participants, marking its highest total in program history.

Members of the DC men’s basketball team pushed wheelchairs along the three-mile walk, along with setting up tables and chairs, placing signs along the path and distributing water to the participants.

As is normally the case, the event had a lasting impact on the DC student-athletes who participated, as sophomore Logan Wolfrum stated, “It really brought joy to me to see the smiles that we put into the participants’ hearts.”

Junior Anthony Brown added, “The walk was very gratifying and uplifting. I am sure this experience will stick with us for the rest of our lives.”

The squad also participated in the 20th-Annual Make-A-Difference Day in October by traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to participate in the Ohio Special Olympics State Bowling Tournament for the third-straight year. Members of the DC men’s basketball team assisted nearly 500 bowlers at the event by keeping track of scores, handing out medals and providing motivation and support for the athletes.

The Defiance College men’s basketball program was awarded with a ser-vice plaque from the Special Olympics for its third year of participation at the event, but head coach Kyle Brumett summed it up by saying how happy his program was to be able to be a part of the experience. “We could not be more excited about our relationship with the Ohio Special Olympics,” said Brumett. “This is a great opportunity for our team to be a part of a very special event and to learn a lot about ourselves, while touching the lives of others. This is a great example of what we want our basketball program to be about, learning while giving.”

That sentiment was echoed by junior Kyle Tietje, who said, “Working at the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament is always a fun experience for every-one. It is an amazing feeling to see the excitement on the faces of the athletes as they compete, and to know that you are helping them achieve that excite-ment.”

During the 2009-2010 academic year, Defiance College student-athletes contributed more than 2,400 hours of service in their community and around the country.

Such experiences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs, as well as the leadership skills to create positive change.

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience.

Yellow Jacket basketball utilizes several facilities on the Defiance College campus. Whether the team is competing against an HCAC rival at the Karl H. Weaner Community Center, or eating a pregame meal at the Serrick Campus Center, Defiance College coaches, administration and staff are devoted to providing the squad with the best facilities possible. The Weaner Center supplies a classic basketball atmosphere for the always exciting games with an adjacent training room, locker rooms, team room and pressbox. The Smart Fitness Center allows the Yellow Jackets to train on state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment, as well as free-weight and Nautilus machines. The team also includes the McMaster Center gymnasium and weight room in its regular practice routine. DC recently broke ground on an 84,000 square-foot field house that will open in the fall of 2011. The multi-purpose floor will provide additional training areas for all 20 varsity athletic programs at Defiance, while the McMaster Center weight room and Smart Fitness Center will also be moved to the new facility to provide the campus with a fitness and recreational hub.

COACHING STAFFDC BASKETBALL 2010-2011FOUR-STRAIGHT SEASONS WITH AT LEAST 17 WINS AND A TOP-FOUR FINISH IN THE HCAC

Kyle Brumett is in his third season as the head coach for the men’s basketball program at Defiance College, after taking over the post on May 19, 2008.

The first two years of Brumett’s tenure with the Purple and Gold have been rich with accomplishments and accolades for the pro-

gram that has now won at least 17 games in four-straight seasons. Brumett boasts a 41-15 overall record with the Yellow Jackets and his .732 winning percentage at Defiance marks the highest career winning percentage of any coach in program history. His DC squads have been especially tough to beat on the home planks, where Defiance is 21-4 inside the Karl H. Weaner Community Center during the Brumett era.

In 2009-2010 Brumett guided DC to one of the finest seasons in school history, as its 23-6 clip gave Defiance its best single-season record and highest win total of the program’s NCAA Division III era. The Jackets got off to their best start since 1973 and rolled to the program’s 1,300th vic-tory in school history, 15th 20-win season, 26th conference champion-ship, fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and 34th postseason berth.

The conference title came via a thrilling, 70-65, victory against the top-seeded Anderson Ravens in the championship game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The win capped an eight-game win streak that sent the Jackets into the NCAA Tournament, where they fell, 75-71, against No. 8 UW-Whitewater in the opening round.

Brumett has already coached eight Yellow Jackets to All-HCAC honors in just two years, and saw Nick Sales named as the HCAC Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-American following the 2009-2010 campaign. Brumett has also helped one of his athletes be named All-Region in each of his two seasons at Defiance, as Anthony Pettaway accom-plished the feat in 2009 and Sales did so in 2010.

Brumett came to Defiance after leading his Lakeland College squad to a 33-22 record and a 2008 Northern Athletics Con-ference Tournament Championship during his two-year stint with the Muskies.

Brumett guided Lakeland to a 17-11 record during the 2007-2008 campaign and entered the NAC Tournament as the sixth seed, before logging three-straight road victories over the top three teams in the league to claim the title. The im-

pressive tournament run concluded with a thrilling, 82-77, overtime victory over the top-seeded Aurora squad.

Along with his time as the Lakeland head coach, Brumett has also worked the sidelines for 11 years combined as an assistant coach or student assistant for three different programs in the collegiate ranks.

Prior to accepting his first collegiate head coaching stint at Lakeland, Brumett spent seven years as the top assistant at DePauw University. The Indiana native helped the Tigers to a 121-62 record, three South-ern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships and an appearance in the 2001-2002 NCAA Division III Tournament’s Elite Eight.

Brumett also spent time at the University of Southern Indiana during the 1998-1999 campaign, where he assisted current Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl. The Eagles posted a 26-6 record and were the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II throughout the majority of the year.

The Hanover College graduate got his coaching career started by serv-ing as a student assistant coach for the Panthers when his playing ca-reer came to an end under HC’s legendary head coach Mike Beitzel.

Brumett graduated from Hanover with a degree in physical education in 1998, before earning a master’s degree in recreation and sport management from Indiana State University in 2004.

He and his wife, Steffanie, have a three-year old son, Leon Maxwell and a newborn son, Marcus David.

PAT SULLIVANASSISTANT COACH / SECOND YEAR

(419) 783-2554 / [email protected] 2010-2011 season will be the second for Pat Sullivan as a member of the Yellow Jacket coaching staff, where he serves as an assis-tant coach while pursuing a master’s degree at Defiance College.

Sullivan came to DC after graduating from Denison in the spring of 2009 with a degree in economics and communication. During his time with the Big Red, Sullivan spent four years as a member of the men’s basketball team and played two seasons on the men’s soccer squad.

The Loveland, Ohio, native excelled on the hardwood for Denison as a three-year starter at the point guard position. Sullivan led Denison in points and assists en route to being named Honorable Mention All-North Coast Athletic Conference as a junior, before starting all 26 games as a team captain during his senior campaign.

Along with his time on the basketball court, Sul-livan spent three years on the Denison Student-Athlete Advisory Council and was a member of the academic Dean’s List.

NATE CONLEYASSISTANT COACH / FIRST YEAR

(419) 783-2384 / [email protected] Conley will begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the men’s basketball program in 2010-2011, after completing a four-year career on the planks with the Purple and Gold.

Conley earned a degree in mathematics in May of 2010 from Defiance College and will begin his coaching career with the Jackets, while working towards a master’s degree in education. Conley will focus his coaching ef-forts with the post players, while also assist-ing with recruiting.

Prior to making the transition to the coach-ing ranks, Conley rounded out his playing

career by starting all 29 games during the memorable 2009-2010 season for Defi-ance. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native set ca-reer highs in nearly every category, while helping Defiance (23-6) to its highest win total in its NCAA Division III tenure, the 26th conference championship in program his-tory and its first appearance in the NCAA D-III National Tournament since 2001.

Conley was part of Defiance’s historic six-man senior class that set a program record with 77 career victories in the school’s Divi-sion III era, while also collecting a pair of HCAC Championships and one NCAA Tourna-ment bid.

DEFIANCE COLLEGE WON THE 2010 HCAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 70-65 WIN AT ANDERSON.

SEASON OUTLOOKDC BASKETBALL 2010-2011FOUR-STRAIGHT SEASONS WITH AT LEAST 17 WINS AND A TOP-FOUR FINISH IN THE HCAC

DEFIANCE, Ohio - Fresh off of guiding his program to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Cham-pionship for its second league title in the past three years and its first NCAA National Tourna-ment bid since 2001, third-year head coach Kyle Brumett will look to steer a younger and re-vamped but equally gifted roster back to those same heights.

The bar has been raised high for the Defiance College men’s bas-ketball program over the past four seasons. During that time, DC has finished fourth or better in the HCAC and won at least 17 games each season on its way to amassing a 77-32 overall clip during that span. The .706 win-ning percentage over the past four seasons ranks as the third-highest clip among all NCAA Division III men’s basketball pro-grams in the state of Ohio.

The Jackets have been espe-cially dominant inside the HCAC, where they have won 36 of their last 48 league meetings on the way to the regular season championship in 2008 and the tournament title in 2010. In fact, no other HCAC team has won more conference games during the past four seasons than DC’s 45. Defiance also boasts six vic-tories in the HCAC Tournament during that span for the most among all league institutions.

The crown jewel of all of that re-cent success came during the 2009-2010 campaign, when the Purple and Gold went 23-6 to set a new program record for victo-ries during DC’s NCAA Division III era, claimed the 26th confer-ence championship in program history and advanced to the NCAA National Tournament for the fourth time since transition-ing from the NAIA ranks prior to the 1991-1992 season.

With eight newcomers joining only eight returners from that squad, the group of 2010-2011 Yellow Jackets will look to con-tinue the winning tradition, while creating their own legacy on the planks at Defiance College.

While many around the region and the HCAC are expecting and pos-sibly hoping for a step back from the DC program, as evidenced by the Jackets being picked sixth in the HCAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, those close to the program remain excited.

Even without a senior on the roster, Defiance will not use its youth as an excuse and expects the experience that its battle-tested returners gained from last year’s HCAC and NCAA Tournament games to be a ma-jor advantage for the team as it looks to build on that success.

In order for that to happen, Defi-

ance will look to capitalize on its length and athleticism, while lean-ing on the trio of Anthony Brown, Kyle Tietje and Logan Wolfrum to take over the reins of the pro-gram. Those three accounted for 30.5 points per game one year ago. Along with assuming in-creased scoring responsibilities, they will be expected to increase their performance on the defen-sive end of the court as well.

Brumett will also need to find players to step up their efforts on the glass, after losing two of the top rebounders in the league over the past two years in An-thony Pettaway and Nick Sales. The most likely candidates to fill that role will be junior for-wards Kevin and Kyle Tietje, while sophomore guards Logan Wolfrum and Brandon Campbell could also chip in after showing a nose for the ball during their rookie campaigns.

More help will come from an incom-ing class deep with talented post players hailing from strong prep programs. The faster the fresh-men adapt to the collegiate level, the quicker DC could find itself on top of the HCAC once again.

POINT GUARDThe loss of a four-time All-Heart-land Collegiate Athletic Confer-ence point guard who had led the team and the league in assists per game for four-straight sea-

sons would be a crippling blow to the outlook of most teams, but that is not necessarily the case for Defiance. Sophomore Logan Wolfrum will take over for the departed Mike Floyd, ensur-ing that the position will remain in good hands. Wolfrum earned Honorable Mention All-HCAC honors as a rookie, after filling the box scores with 10.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals a night off the bench for the Jackets. Wolfrum scored in double-digits 17 times and led DC in assists nine times as a reserve and those numbers should rise substantially for the Defiance, Ohio, native, as his minutes could climb north of 30 per game in 2010-2011. Wol-frum has used an outstanding offseason to prepare himself for the increased role and appears poised to give the Jackets one of the top point guards in the league once again. A pair of new faces could spell Wolfrum, as freshmen Leroy Lewis and Allen Tigner will provide depth at the point and shooting guard positions. Junior Anthony Brown could also slide over from his two-guard slot whenever his ball-handling skills are needed for the Purple and Gold.

SHOOTING GUARD / WINGThe squad’s active leader in scoring and minutes played is the aforementioned Anthony Brown, who has already started

40 games during his time at DC. Brown netted 11.3 points per night and hit 36.9 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc as the team’s second-leading scorer one year ago. The Honor-able Mention All-HCAC perform-er is expected to join Wolfrum in seeing increased minutes, after averaging 22.8 per game last year, and should also add several points per game to his scoring average. Sophomore Brandon Campbell rounds out DC’s dynamic trio of likely back-court starters who each played valuable roles on the run to the NCAA Tournament in 2010. Campbell complements the of-fensive prowess of Brown and Wolfrum by relishing his role as the defensive stopper for the Jackets. During his first colle-giate season, Campbell ranked fifth in the HCAC with 1.5 steals per outing and started 20 of the team’s last 21 games. There are several names after Brown and Campbell on the depth chart at the wing positions but they will need to prove themselves either at the position, or at the collegiate level. Most notable on that list is Kyle Tietje, who will start in the post but could play on the wing when the Jackets decide to take advantage of his length. Returning players Bran-don Hoke and Derrick Bufford could earn increased roles, along with newcomers Leroy Lewis and Allen Tigner.

POSTThe graduations of Anthony Pet-taway two years ago, along with Nick Sales and Nate Conley last season have partially depleted the Jackets of their experienced options in the paint. The cup-board is not empty however, as Kevin and Kyle Tietje will return, along with Justin Morris to give Defiance a trio of junior post threats. All should see more time, while each Tietje will be leaned on to consistently display the flashes of talent and athleti-cism they have demonstrated throughout their first two sea-sons. Kyle averaged 8.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks a night, while hitting 55.0 percent of his attempts from the floor last season, while Kevin shot 53.2 percent and netted 4.7 points and 3.4 boards in only 12.9 minutes per game. A re-cruiting class loaded with post players will provide reinforce-ments, as Ryan Hicks and Josh Francis will don the Purple and Gold after leading Port Clinton High to the Ohio State Division II Finals in 2010. The two bring the big-game experience and win-ning tradition that should trans-late well to the collegiate level and could make their presence felt early into their DC careers. Clay Heitkamp and Brandon Ray will also see court time during their freshmen campaigns and give the Jackets two more excit-ing prospects in the post.

2010-2011 SCHEDULEDefiance has loaded up the schedule once again and will play five games against teams ranked in the D3hoops.com 2010-2011 Preseason Men’s Basketball Top-25. The challeng-ing slate will open with a home date against Kalamazoo, where the Jackets have gone 21-4 with head coach Kyle Brumett. If DC gets past the opener, it would then put an 11-game winning streak in regular season non-con-ference games dating back to December 29, 2008 on the line when it competes in Wheaton’s Lee Pfund Classic. The opening game of the tournament will pit Defiance against UW-Whitewa-ter in a rematch of last year’s first-round clash in the NCAA Tournament. Along with poten-tial games against foes from the nationally respected Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Confer-ence and the College Confer-ence of Illinois and Wisconsin, the non-conference slate will feature the renewed rivalry with Ohio Northern and the hosting of the 36th-Annual Purple and Gold Tournament on December 29 and 30. The challenging non-conference schedule should prepare Defiance for a grueling 18-game grind in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, as the Jackets shoot for their third HCAC Championship in four years and the 27th crown in program history.

POSTSEASON HISTORY

Defiance has qualified for the postseason 34 times with 30 of those appearances coming in the NAIA. From 1956 to 1961 Defiance lost its first 11 postseason games, starting with a loss to Steubenville College, 92-75, on February 29, 1956. DC’s first-ever post-season win came on March 6, 1962, when the Yellow Jackets defeated Ohio Northern, 74-73, in the District 22 Semifinals. During its time in the NAIA, DC won four District 22 Titles.

The Yellow Jackets have had four postseason berths in the NCAA tournament but have yet to taste victory, falling in the first round to Otterbein in 1993 and 1999, to Calvin in 2001 and to UW-Whitewater in 2010.

DC’s last postseason win came on March 3, 1990, via a 56-55 victory over Tiffin in the NAIA District 22 Semifinals. All-time, DC is 20-39 in postseason play.
