With the Wisconsin River just a few feet away, this park has an appropriate name of Riverside. Columbia County and some private land owners donated the land to the City of Portage in 1867. The shelter was erected in 1924 and the city slogan of “Where the North Begins” can be found on the top of the shelter. The park is 2.1 acres and is located on East Wisconsin Street. This is a wayside park with a large open shelter, picnic tables, and benches.

The Portage High School Jazz Band and Portage High School Choir will perform several outstanding selections. Both the Jazz Band and the Choir have an endless amount of talent, and we are very proud to have them with us tonight. Enjoy the beautiful music of our local young talents…..

June 8 Madison Malone with Special Guest: John Michael

Madison Malone doesn’t shy away from any singing opportunity. The 17-year-old Portage High School junior’s first public appearance was at a fourth grade talent show. “She sang, ‘Part of Your World’ from ‘The Little Mermaid,’” her father, Sean Malone said. More recently, Madison sang the Star Spangled Banner at a Mallards game. She has been recording music videos, which can be seen on YouTube. She said she is influenced by singers like Gavin DeGraw, John Legend and Colbie Caillat Madison said, “I’ve been singing since I was 2 (years old).” She added, “I sing trendier songs, but they all tend to have meaning.”

John Michael has been in love with the guitar since before he can remember. His first guitar was found in a trash pile, on a side street, of Fond du Lac, when he was five. Since then he‘s plucked and played, picking things up along the way to give him variance in his playing style. “Follow the events of life, for they will lead you to people and places which will further your inner growth”….. John is very pleased the events of his life have lead him before you this evening.

June 15 The Dang-itsThe Dang-Its’ approach is roots oriented, emphasizing tight arrangements with clear, soaring vocal harmonies. The band shifts effortlessly from spare and gritty alt-country stories, to jazzy, western swing jump tunes, to whisper-quiet ballads—a stylistic and dynamic sweep that one Madison writer/musician simply described as “Atmospheric.” Their repertoire is definitely off the beaten track and features songs that span a wide range, from the quirky and humorous to powerful portraits of love and loss. Add a few classics and standards along with expertly crafted original music, and The Dang-Its offer a mix that will connect with any audience.

Focused on country, this father and daughter combination will bring country to the crowd; From current hits to loved oldies. “Little” Karlie Korish has been singing since she was 6. She has gained much experience from musicals at the Portage Center for the Arts and her church’s praise band. This 14 year old is never afraid of the spotlight. “Big” Tony Korish has enjoyed the karaoke scene. Starting off with XXLT Entertainment and soon having Karlie join him in “Big and Little”. Be ready to be put on the spot when he goes out into the crowd. From Garth Brooks and George Strait to Taylor Swift and the Dixie Chicks, these two will cover a variety of country music. So sit back, relax, and enjoy an evening filled with country music from Big and Little!

Isaiah 42:10 is a Christian rock/praise and worship group. The name, “Isaiah 42:10”, is their mission statement…. “Sing to the Lord a new song! Let his praise be sung from the ends of the earth by those sailing the sea and by everything in it, by the coastlands and those living there.”

The band consists of six members; lead singer / guitarist and founder, Harley Smalley. His son, Chris Smalley (drummer) and his daughter Sara Smalley/McChesney (vocalist) accompany him in the band. The remaining members, Christy Williams (keyboardist), Jeff Owen

(Bass) and Ben Wenzel (Vocalist/Rapper) make up the rest of the Isaiah ministry team. The group has released three CDs. Their debut album, “Isaiah 42:10”, their second “Gotta Have Faith” and the new release “Flamethrower”. The group

has played at numerous venues such as: worship services, youth ministries, church functions, parties, festivals, and coffee shops. Isaiah 42:10 has opened up for nationally known groups such as “By the Tree”, “Rush of Fools”, “John

Schlitt” (former lead singer of Petra), and “December Radio”, “Seventh Day Slumber”. For the past six years, the band has traveled all over Wisconsin and other states including Illinois, Minnesota and Michigan.

The American Family Insurance Choir was established in October 1997 at the suggestion of an employee who thought it would be nice to perform some holiday music for the office. The choir’s initial performances were during the 1997 Holiday Season when they presented concerts at American Family’s National Headquarters and the Great Lakes Regional Building, both located in Madison.

Since then, many senior and healthcare centers throughout the Dane-Columbia County area have enjoyed regular holiday performances by the choir. In addition, the choir performs annually at the Holiday Fantasy in Lights Grand Lighting ceremony at Olin-Turville Park. This past holiday season we added the American Family Children’s Hospital and UW hospitals to our performance stops and plan to visit them again this spring.

The choir also has a non-holiday repertoire and has been included in the Sun Prairie Concerts in the Park and the Dean House Back Yard concerts. A particular highlight for the choir was singing the National

Anthem at several Milwaukee Brewers games. The choir has also performed for various charitable organizations in the Madison area including United Way and the American Cancer Society.

Performing an exciting and diverse musical repertoire that preserves our national heritage as Americans, the Air National Guard Band of the Midwest instills patriotism, national pride, and esprit de corps. An integral component of the Air Force’s Public Affairs Triad, the Band of the Midwest performs a vital role in communicating the message and professionalism of today’s United States Air Force and Air National Guard: In the words of General Carl A. Spaatz, the first USAF Chief of Staff, “Public support is as essential to effective air power as industries, airplanes, and airmen,”

Stationed at the Peoria Air National Guard Base and attached to the 182nd Airlift Wing, we serve as musical ambassadors of the Midwest. All of our highly trained musicians are citizen-soldiers, performing with the Air National Guard Band of the Midwest only two days per month, and traveling on a two-week performance tour in the summer. While our primary Area of Responsibility encompasses Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, the Band of the Midwest has also traveled and performed extensively for both civilian and military audiences, to include presidents, nobility, and dignitaries throughout the United States and the world.

Doug Brown and Michelle DuVall have earned a reputation for playing some of today’s most swinging and refined jazz. Whether performing as a duo, leading their “rock solid quintet” (Isthmus 2003), or letting loose with “Get Down, Mr. Cat!” an eight piece tour de force that “knows how to swing, as anyone who caught their eye-popping appearance at August’s Jazz at Five series can attest” (Isthmus 2002). Michelle and Doug bring fresh new energy and unbridled joy to the timeless classics of

thirties and forties jazz!

“Get Down, Mr. Cat! is not a jamming kind of group,” says Brown. “Most of the tunes are arranged fairly thoroughly. The emphasis is on the song, and swinging hard.”

“We’re trying to play great old songs with young, new energy,” Brown says. “We don’t look at our material as museum pieces, but as songs that still resonate.”

The Highlights have been performing in the Madison area for over 2 decades. Their energetic performances include 50’s and 60’s, country, Latin, blues, rock, standards and much more.

Over the years, the Highlights have received top honors in the Madison area Battle of the Bands and have written, produced and recorded their own tunes here and in Nashville. They have been featured at the Art Fair on the Square and the Taste of Madison. But what they love best – is playing music and entertaining and it shows every time they perform!

While all hail from Wisconsin, they bring very diverse musical backgrounds to form a fun time for dancing or listening. The magic of the Highlights is that all of the players can play and enjoy all sorts of music – so their rhythm and blues sounds like rhythm and blues, their country sounds like country and their 50’s sounds like 50’s.

Most important, the Highlights are usually game to try anything once to ensure that the crowd has a great time! Variety music, dancing and great fun…that’s the Highlights!

The Sinchiladas are a 6 piece (sounds like a high calorie #2 dinner from Taco Bell) Tex Mex, Cajun-zydeco influenced, country-pickin, Americana Rock and Roll band. Comprised of lifetime musicians, four members have played together for years in various popular bands in the Capital region, including Wild Heart and Pink Houses. Five of the six members sing both lead and backup vocals, and the instrumentation is very diverse. Dan Bono, on piano, organ and synthesizer, is also an accomplished accordion player and is utilized during segments in the show that feature driving New Orleans/border Texas songs by Doug

Sahm, The Blue Runners and Joe Ely. Members include Steve Barknecht on drums and Heidi Rae on vocals and percussion.

Craig Radi plays both upright and 5 string bass. Twin guitarists Taco Billy and Siete (Eric Hilton and Pat Siebens) switch electric to acoustic, from mandolin to slide and classical guitars during the performance, which includes full P.A. and lighting,

additional staging and backdrops to set the feel for an interesting concert that is tight musically, relaxed and fun and certainly different

from the usual classic rock offered elsewhere.

Maggie Mae’s Cafe is located in Oxford, Wisconsin. Owned by Roger and Maggie. Its a Unique place to eat because you can get a song with your meal. In August of 2002 she became interested in learning to play the guitar, mainly because of a customer, Art Ford, brought his in one day and sang. The customers loved it and she knew she had to get one. So

she bought her first guitar, taught herself to chord and to her amazement....she could sing! Art and Maggie have been singing together ever since. The summer of 2003 Roger and friends cleaned out their barn on the farm and they have been holding “Music in the Barn” parties every month. Maggie now has 5 cd’s, and regularly tours and performs.

“Uncle Ozzie” has been in the music business for 59 years and performing as Uncle Ozzie for 48 years. He has recorded 5 albums, 6 CDs, and 4 cassettes.

His musical career started at the age of 13, playing in his parent’s band, “Cliff Banks and His Sunset Ramblers”. He made his first recording, “You Call Everybody Darling”, at the age of 10. In 1963, he formed his own band, and he traveled across 16 Midwestern states providing his music to the fans and dancers at ballrooms and polka festivals. In later years, he was playing dances and many shows from Wisconsin to Arizona.

Starting in 2001, using specialized electronic equipment, he once again began touring the Midwest, bringing his original sounds and the “Cousin Fuzzy” style sounds. He does this by using his entertaining abilities, singing vocals and playing 10 different musical instruments, along with his wife Shirley on sound board. He is once again presenting to his fans, live and in person, those great listening and dancing sounds that he enjoys writing and playing.
