    Designated the tenth national parkin 1910, Glacier is home to elk,

    gray wolf, lemming, wolverine,

    lynx, mountain goat, bighorn

    sheep, and one of the largest

    populations of grizzly bears

    remaining in the United States.

    In 1995 Glacier and neighboring

    Waterton Lakes National Park

    in Canada were recognized as

    a World Heritage Site.

    A wide variety of animal lifeinhabits Biscayne National Park,

    which is 95% water. Many are

    threatened or endangered. Species

    include the West Indian manatee,

    American crocodile, peregrine

    falcon, eastern indigo snake,

    least tern, piping plover, Schaus

    swallowtail butterfly, and five

    species of sea turtles.

    Located on the OlympicPeninsula, the Olympic National

    Park includes one of the last

    remaining large t racts of old

    growth forests in the contiguous

    United States. Pacific storms

    bring up to 14 feet of annual

    rainfal l to the lush, primeval

    forests in the Quinalt, Queets,

    Hoh, and Bogachiel valleys. Deer,

    elk, cougars, and bears range

    from these valleys to the parks

    mountain meadows.

    The Waterpocket Fold is a geologicfold in the rock strata of middle

    Utah. The Capitol Reef National

    Park was established in 1971 and

    includes the nearly 100 mi le long

    geologic formation that runs from

    Thousand Lake Plateau to Lake

    Powell. The park is named for the

    spectacular Capitol Reef formation

    within the immense fold. Wildlife

    in the park ranges from shrews

    and bats to larger animals like

    bobcats and coyotes.

    At 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier isthe highest mountain in the state

    of Washington and the Cascade

    Range. Its also one of the 16 active

    volcanoes on the Decade Volcano

    list, last erupting approximately 150

    years ago. The Mt. Rainier National

    Park is part of a complex ecosystem

    spanning an elevation gradient of

    12,800 feet. Popular wildlife like

    elk and black bear range the park,

    while mountain goats keep to the

    alpine or subalpine altitudes.

    Perhaps best known for its

    spectacular waterfalls, Yosemite

    spans nearly 12,000 square miles

    of valleys, meadows, giant sequoia

    forest, and vast wilderness areas.

    Famous for its black bear, the

    park is also home to the spotted

    owl, bighorn sheep, bobcat, mule

    deer, western fence lizard, garter

    snakes, and western tanagers.

    Yellowstone National Parkbecame Americas first national

    park in 1872. The park is home to

    the famous Old Faithful geyser

    and a large variety of wildlife

    including bison, wolf, elk, and

    grizzly bear. Although most of

    the park is located in Wyoming,

    it spills over into both Montana

    and Idaho.

    Established in 1947, the EvergladesNational Park is the largest

    subtropical wilderness in the

    United States. The park includes

    only about a fifth of the entire

    Everglades ecosystem. The warm

    climate supports a diverse array of

    wildlife including frogs and toads,

    wading birds like the Great Blue

    Heron, nearly 300 species of fish,

    white-tailed deer, bobcats, snakes,

    both the American alligator and

    crocodile, and the Caiman.

    Spanish for green table, Mesa

    Verde protects over 4,000

    archeological sites, which include

    600 cliff dwellings built by the

    Ancestral Pueblo people hundreds

    of years ago. Home to a wide

    variety of shrews, bats, hares and

    rabbits, squirrels, gophers, and

    mice; larger animals such as the

    bobcat, mountain lion, mule deer,

    black bear, and coyote can also

    be found in the park.

    The remarkable spires of Bryce

    Canyon are formed when ice andrainwater wear away the limestone

    of the Claron Formation. The park,

    established in 1928, encompasses

    three distinct climate zones that

    provide an ideal environment to

    over 100 species of birds, dozens

    of mammals, and over a thousand

    plant species. The Mountain Lion,

    also known as a cougar, puma,

    panther, yellow cat, or catamount,

    is the largest member of the cat

    family in North America.

    Athabaskan for The High One,

    Denali was the native name for

    Mount McKinley, the highest

    peak in North America at 20,320

    feet. The park was enlarged and

    renamed Denali in 1980. Visitors

    may spot moose, caribou, Dal ls

    sheep, grizzly bear, wolf, grouse,

    fox, lynx, wolverine, beaver, and

    dozens of other species of animal

    life in the parks over four million

    acre expanse.

    Visitors to this remote wildernessaccess the park via bush plane or

    hike in from the Dalton Highway.

    The park, located above the Artic

    Circle encompasses the central

    portion of the Brooks Range.

    Wildlife that can be seen in the

    park include muskoxen, ground

    squirrel, grizzly bear, and car ibou.

    Visits require careful planning

    and preparation.
