With nine male runners returning, the Vulcans are looking to improve upon last year’s sixth-place finish at the PSAC Championships, which was hosted at Roadman Park. Last season, head coach Daniel Caulfield guided Cal U to its highest finish at the conference race since 1984. Caulfield will look to a pair of former All-PSAC performers in sophomore Aaron Dinzeo and junior Christopher Werner to anchor the Vulcans in 2011. As a true freshman, Dinzeo led the Vulcans in all seven races in which he competed. He won the season-opening race at Roadman Park and added top-10 finishes at Lehigh and Kutztown. Dinzeo finished seventh at the PSAC Championships and 16th at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships, marking the highest Cal U finish at both races since 2008. Werner competed in seven races last season after earning All-PSAC honors as a freshman in 2009. Last year, he finished third on the team at both the PSAC and NCAA Regional Championships. Tim Lahmers returns for his senior season with the Vulcans after running a combined 16 events over the last thee years. Last season, he finished second on the team at the NCAA Regional Championships. Senior Cory Steinhagen, junior Chris Poss and sophomores Savantuay Boyette, Jamie Burkwit, Noah Carroll and Cameron Coffey all return after competing in races last season for Vulcans. Boyette ran in six races and finished behind only Dinzeo on the team at three events, including the PSAC Championships where he finished 23rd overall. Cal U will also benefit with the transfer of three runners with NCAA Division I experience. Senior Chris Wolfe competed on the Louisville track & field teams the last three seasons, while brothers Kyle and Nick Gibson competed for Saint Francis (Pa.).

Cal U has made tremendous strides with the women’s program in the last two seasons and will feature its most experienced team in years with 22 runners returning in 2011. Over the last two years, the Vulcans have won their first invitational titles in over 20 years, while also posting their best finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships in two decades. Senior Brittney Kanach returns for her final season after leading the team in four races in 2010. For the second time in her career, she was the Vulcans’ top finisher at both the PSAC and NCAA Regional Championships. The Vulcans will also benefit from the return of redshirt sophomore Erin Kling, who missed all of last fall due to injury. In 2009, she became the program’s first All-PSAC runner since 1984 and was named PSAC Freshman of the Year. Sophomores Maeve Charlesworth and Julia Kubica will also be key returners in 2011 after each ran in only three events last season. In her college debut, Charlesworth posted a team-best finish at Carnegie Mellon and later finished second on the team at the NCAA Regional Championships. Kubica led the team in each race in which she competed, finishing second overall at the season-opening race at Roadman Park and at Slippery Rock. Redshirt senior Laurie Hall and junior Carly Youngeberg look to again contribute this year after each set school records during the track season. Hall missed all of last fall, but returns with over a dozen career races, and Youngeberg finished second on the team at the PSAC Championships in 2010. Juniors Megan Kleiner, Bryanna Learn and Marie McIntyre, along with sophomores Brittany Amori, Melanie Barr, Anna Carik, Erin Flickinger, Ann Marie Hayes, Andi Heasley, Jill Schickling, Sarah Schumaker and Amber Simcoke will provide significant depth to the program.

Daniel Caulfield enters his sixth season as the head coach for the men’s and women’s cross country programs at Cal U. In addition to his work with the cross country teams, he serves as an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams. Last season, the Vulcans hosted the PSAC Championships at Roadman Park for the first time since 1992. Led by All-PSAC freshman Aaron Dinzeo, who finished seventh overall, the men’s team posted a sixth-place finish, its best since 1986. During the 2011 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, senior Matt Kroetch became the fourth different runner in school history to win the PSAC title in the 10,000 meters. Kroetch registered a time of 30:39.15 to win the race and provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. In addition, he has coached All-PSAC runners in the 800 and 1,500 meters and the 5K and 10K. In 2009, Caulfield coached two of the top freshmen in the conference with Erin Kling becoming the first Cal U women’s runner to earn All-PSAC honors since 1984 and was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year. In his short time with the Vulcans, he has coached athletes to six combined conference titles in cross country and track & field. He also mentored NCAA All-American and Olympic Trials qualifier Christopher Clark. In 2008, Clark posted one of the

most impressive seasons by a runner in program history, earning USTFCCCA Atlantic Region and PSAC Men’s Athlete of the Year laurels. In addition to their improvement on the course, Caulfield’s teams are also excelling in the classroom. Last year, both the men’s and women’s team were named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. Individually, both Erin Kling and Tim Lahmers earned Capital One Academic All-District laurels. Caulfield joined Cal U after serving as the head men’s and women’s track & field and cross country coach at PSAC rival Clarion. A native of Ireland, he started coaching at his alma mater Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. While serving as a coach with the Grizzlies, Adams State won four NCAA women’s cross country national championships (1998, 1999, 2003 and 2004) and two NCAA men’s titles (1998 and 2003). During his collegiate career, he was a 10-time All-American and two-time NAIA National Champion. He helped lead the Grizzlies’ cross country program to National Championships in 1993 and 1994 after placing in the top five during both championship races. Caulfield also was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) record holder in the 800- and 1500-meter runs. He was named to the RMAC All-Time Men’s Cross Country Team in

2009. Caulfield earned his bachelor’s degree from ASC in exercise physiology and in late 1996 returned to Ireland to work in the exercise physiology department of the Blackrock Clinic, one of the country’s most established healthcare facilities. He returned to ASC in 1998 to complete his master’s degree and coached there until December 2004. The Irish native also holds the national indoor record in the 800 meters. Caulfield was a two-time European Cup champion in the 800- and 1500-meter runs. In 2001, he was among the top 50 in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World rankings. Caulfield was a two-time runner-up at the Millrose Games, which is an annual indoor track & field meet held at Madison Square Garden. He also placed eighth in the 2001 World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.

Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Roger Kingdom enters his eighth year working with the cross country and track & field programs at Cal U. Kingdom, the former world and American record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, serves as the Director of the Track & Field and Cross Country programs at Cal U. Kingdom is a five-time United States Outdoor Champion (1985, 1988-90 and 1995) and two-time gold medalist at the Pan Am Games (1983, 1995). He also holds a World Cup gold medal (1989) and won gold at the World University Games in 1989. He remains one of only two runners to ever win consecutive Olympic titles in the 110-meter hurdles (1984 Los Angeles, 1988 Seoul). A native of Georgia, he joined the Cal U athletic program in 2004 before being named interim head track & field coach in March of the following year. Shortly thereafter, he accepted the director position for both the cross country and track & field programs. In his time as head coach, Cal U has featured 12 individual All-Americans, as well as 20 individual PSAC Indoor and Outdoor Champions. Four times

during his tenure, the Vulcans have had the PSAC Track Athlete of the Year and twice the PSAC Most Valuable Athlete of the Year and PSAC Freshman of the Year. Under Kingdom’s supervision Cal U has had at least one All-American in each season from 2007-2010 including four-time member Christopher Clark (5K and 10K) and five-time honoree Brice Myers (60-meter and 110-meter hurdles). The women’s program has also had two All-Americans, with current track & field assistant coach Danielle Malay receiving honors in the 400-meter hurdles in 2008 and Clare McSweeney earning recognition in the 800-meter run in 2010. One of the most decorated athletes in Cal U history, Kingdom mentored 14-time PSAC Champion Brad Rager who excelled in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Rager was the two-time PSAC Track Athlete of the Year and was twice named PSAC Most Valuable Athlete. Kingdom is a 2002 graduate from the University of Pittsburgh and played football for the Panthers in the 1980s before concentrating his efforts on his

track & field career. He set the world record of 12.92 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles in Zurich, Switzerland in 1989. Kingdom retired from active competition in 1998 and in 2005, Kingdom was inducted in to the USA Track & Field (USATF) Hall of Fame. This summer, he was a member of the inaugural class of the USATF Georgia Hall of Fame.

For more than 150 years Cal U has been known for its educational excellence and for its commitment to the core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility. At Cal U, students are our first priority. As an undergraduate, students can choose from more than 150 programs of study in three undergraduate colleges. When our core values of Integrity, Civility and Responsibility are coupled with real-world training, we see a big difference in the types of jobs our graduates get. To advance our mission of building the character and careers of students, Cal U relies upon committed faculty, motivated students, challenging programs and exceptional facilities. Our Character Education Institute provides character education to Cal U students, faculty and staff, and corporate training to regional organizations and businesses. The institute serves as a resource center for education majors, and assists school districts and local organizations in advancing character development.

For 10-straight semesters, Cal U athletic programs have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.

Last year, the Vulcans made 11 team and 11 individual appearances in NCAA postseason play.

A total of 225 Cal U student-athletes, representing all sports were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Cal U Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 240 athletes earned the honor for the Fall 2010 semester.

CROSS COUNTRY HISTORY The cross country program at Cal U dates back over 40 years to the early 1970’s. In the early years of the program, the cross country team was simply a segment of the track and field program. Early into the program a solid foundation was put into place when the team of runners achieved success at a regional level by earning a second place finish at the NAIA District 18 meet in 1972. This event placed Cal U against current PSAC rivals such as IUP and Slippery Rock. As the 1970’s continued, cross country lost popularity and did not receive a great amount of support or exposure. However, the Vulcan runners continued to be successful. Without much attention being given to athletics at the time, James Criner, Doug Boyd and Dean Shaw were still able to earn All-PSAC laurels during this stretch. Much of this success has to be correlated with longtime head coach Marty Uher. In 2009, Uher was inducted into the Cal U Athletics Hall of Fame for his efforts and dedication to the program over multiple decades. With people consumed by the Vietnam War through the mid 1970’s, athletics were put aside. It wasn’t until the war ended around 1975 when people began to invest more time, energy and resources back into athletics. After the 1977 and 1978 campaigns, the Vulcan cross country team garnered respect at the highest level when Dean Shaw was selected an NCAA All-American. Shaw set the foundation and paved the way over the next five years for Brian Ferrari and Mike Bradley. Ferrari went on to become a three-time All-American (1981-83) and captured the highest individual accolade

possible by winning the NCAA Division II National Individual Championship in 1983. Along with Ferrari in ‘83, Bradley also earned All-America status. Through the mid 1980’s the cross country program remained competitive on the conference level by consistently posting All-PSAC performers. Paul Jost had three All-PSAC seasons (1984-86) while Pete Iannacchione and Paul Bryan also earned the honors after the 1985 and 1986 seasons respectively. During this same time frame, the institution of the women’s cross-country program began to flourish. In one of the first years of the program, Rachel Brooks and Kim Price both earned All-PSAC laurels. Price finished 15th in the conference, while Brooks took home the top spot in 1980. The women’s team also produced two other All-PSAC performers in the 1983 season when Gwen Van Dine

and Sue Cavanaugh earned the honors. Cavanaugh also went onto repeat as an all-conference performer the following year. However, the cross-country teams would eventually fall on hard times. The Vulcans had lost their edge on both the men’s and women’s teams and struggled to remain competitive. Over 21 seasons between 1986 and 2007, Adam Manewell was the only student-athlete to earn All-PSAC accolades during this time when he finished 15th in 1994. When head coach Daniel Caulfield arrived on campus in 2006 from PSAC rival Clarion, a positive change seemed likely. Christopher Clark, a proven PSAC contender, followed Caulfield to Cal U and the program experienced a drastic transformation. In 2008, Clark not only garnered All-PSAC laurels, but also became

the conference champion and Athlete of the Year, NCAA Regional Champion and the first Cal U cross country All-American since 1983. The women’s team also experienced a turnaround. Laurie Hall was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Second-Team and Erin Kling posted a 13th place finish at the PSAC Championships earning All-PSAC honors and also collecting the PSAC Freshman of the Year award in 2009. This was the first time in 25 years a member of the women’s cross country team earned All-PSAC honors. Under Caulfield’s direction, the programs have also captured several team invitational titles. Since the 2008 season, Christopher Werner and Aaron Dinzeo have both earned All-PSAC honors for the men, while both the men’s and women’s teams have had multiple student-athletes receive all-academic honors from the USTFCCCA.

HISTORY

SEASON REVIEW The Cal U cross country program was selected to host the 2010 PSAC Championships as it debuted a brand new course at Roadman Park. It marked the first time since 1992 that the conference hosted its championship event at Cal U. The Vulcan women’s team once again featured its largest roster, more than doubling in size from 2009. The team posted a trio of top-three finishes by winning their own home meet, the 39th-annual Marty Uher Invitational, and finishing second and third, respectively, at the Slippery Rock Quad meet and the Saint Vincent Invitational. Individually, freshman Maeve Charlesworth was named the PSAC Women’s Athlete of the Week after finishing a season-best 11th overall at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. The men’s side also posted three top-three finishes along with finishing sixth at the PSAC Championships -- the highest finish by the Vulcans since 1986. Cal U also finished ninth at the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships for the third-straight year. Freshman Aaron Dinzeo led the way, finishing seventh overall at the PSAC race, the highest finish by a Vulcan since All-American Chris Clark won the race in 2008. He was the Vulcans’ top finisher in all six races in which he competed.

Marty Uher was the firstcross country coach in school history.

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.

In 2010, the California University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s cross country teams were both named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II All-Academic Team and a combined eight Vulcans (four men, four women) received individual All-Academic honors from the USTFCCCA. Freshman Aaron Dinzeo, junior Tim Lahmers, senior Tony Russo and sophomore Christopher Werner were named to the USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic Men’s Team. On the women’s side, freshman Maeve Charlesworth, junior Brittney Kanach, freshman Jill Schickling and sophomore Carly Youngeberg were named to the USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic Team. The men’s team posted a GPA of 3.32 and was one of 68 teams recognized and the women’s team compiled a GPA of 3.33 and was one of 107 teams recognized by the organization. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) led the country with a combined 24 programs (men’s and women’s) selected as USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams. Both programs have maintained above a 3.25 GPA for the past four years with the Cal U men’s program receiving the all-academic laurel in three-consecutive seasons, while the women’s program has garnered the honor in each of the last two years. To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic individual honors, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or greater through the most-recent semester, completed at least 12

USTFCCCA

credit hours in the semester of cross country competition, and placed in the top 50 percent at the most recent NCAA National Championships or in the top 30 percent at the NCAA Regional Championships. To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have compiled a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA Regional Championship.

The USTFCCCA is a non-profit professional organization representing cross country and track & field coaches of all levels. The organization represents over 8,000 coaching members encompassing 94 percent of all NCAA track & field programs (DI, DII, and DIII) and includes members representing the NAIA as well as a number of state high school coaches associations. The USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a lobbyist for coaches’ interests, and working as a liaison between the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track & field.

On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852.

He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning.

His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001 he became a Certified Covey Trainer on The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan cross country. I am confident that Coach Daniel Caulfield, his staff and the runners will continue to build upon the cross country tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2010-11 academic year, a total of 225 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 245 student-athletes earned the honor during the Fall 2010 semester. For the 10th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Roadman Park. Cross Country and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2011 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.
