of our opportunity to renew, refresh and start over. Allaround us are signs of spring –budding trees, bloomingflowers and the constantchirping of birds as they start their new nestingcycle. Much can be learned from the emergingflora and fauna right in our own backyard.

his time of year can also be a perfect time forthe BCC to renew

and refresh ourstrategies andinitiatives for 2011.Through a recentsurvey exercise, active chorusmembers clearlyarticulated theirdesire to hold on tothose qualities(brotherhood, qualitysinging, service) thathave made thechorus thrive for 2½decades. Likewise, they made it just asclear that now is thetime for arededication toimproved vocalperformance, commitment toservice to each otherand to thecommunities inwhich we live andperform.

ur first quarter of the year leading up tospring has been quite impressive. Due to the

great work of our Singing Valentines Coordinator, along with strong support from leaders inCartersville and Rome, the SV program warmedthe hearts of many and added a healthy boost toour operating budget in the process. I must say

that I’ve never been more proud of the Chorus asduring the recent Hearts for Heros performancebefore a packed audience at The Strand(including Andrew Young and Roy Barnes). Aseach soldier/veteran stood during their fight songit was very difficult to stay focused and not let thetears roll – I was honored to sing with you.

also would be remiss if I did not recognize thehard work, including the vocal production, the

stage plan and the costumes that went intopreparations for the AgingSuper Heros set for theBoaz contest. It is gratifying to alreadysee the re-energized workof the Music &Performance Team. A newopening song looks verypromising and the new VPMusic & Performancealong with the up-and-coming bass section leadare creating greatexcitement with thispiece. Additionally, someexciting things areunfolding with additionalperformances includingthe charity event led byour Cartersville gang andthe potential for a secondshow at the CherokeeTown & Country Club inDecember.

lease know that yourboard of directors,

music and performanceteam and Director of Music will continue to useyour input to shape the initiatives and activitiesfor this year. While being fiscally responsible byensuring that our fixed costs are satisfied first,we will continue to explore opportunities that willadd depth to the developmental aspects of thechorus as well.Spring fever is spreading – catch it!

By Bob Slaney huge BCC thank you to all the guys who participatedin quartets, helped to run the program and sold SVs.

We delivered 56 Singing Valentines and 6 Telephone Valentines. We also delivered quite a few complimentary SVs. The program started out Thursday the10th with Sandy Sanders, Jack Crawford, Maury Morris and Dan Shelles delivering sweet

love songs at a Kiwanis luncheon, to the CobbCounty School Board and to the music director atSouth Cobb High School. On Monday the 14th, 129 and Counting helped to get a listener of radiostation FISH-FM out of the dog house by deliveringa Singing Valentine over the air waves to thelistener’s loved one.

The 14thwas abusy dayfor allquartets. Alot of funwas had

by all and several drivers learned how to make greattime between deliveries! I received quite a few notesof “thank you” from recipients of SVs. They lovedour music and wanted more.

A huge BCC “thank you” to the seven quartets whodelivered our Singing Valentines and especially toJack Crawford and Lighthouse for helping ourprogram to be a huge success. I’d also like to thankJim Cox, Rod Patton, Philip Johnson and Roy Harrow for coming to JohnKnox on the 14th ready to deliver as backups in case one of the quartets

needed a guy to fill in. Philip Johnson did fill in as a tenor for us and helped me to avoid lastminute stress – thank you, Philip!

Special recognition goes to Cartersville and Rome whosold 12 and 15 SVs respectively – almost half of ourdeliveries were made outside Cobb County. Thanks to TonyBoyd of Martha’s Finest and the Cartersville crew – MacMcKenzie, Frank Biscardi, Bill Devine, Dave Elvers and DonJackson. We need the same level of enthusiasm andmarketing effort in Cobb County in 2012.

This year we grew our net revenue slightly over 2010 andprovided just over $3100.00 to our ailing treasury. Can wedo better? Of course we can! But it will take the participationof each and every guy. Even if you are unable to sing in aquartet, you should participate by helping to run the program and by selling SVs.

As usual, there were a large number offamiliar faces: Jeff Selano, singing with“Knuckleheads” featuring his son, Julian, singing Bass (!), and his dad, Jules, fromOntario District in the pit as ContestAdministrator. North Georgia(Gainesville/Cumming) groupsinging for evaluation. It seems the longer I am givento continue in this wonderfulendeavor, the more it seemsPogo was right: “We have metthe enemy, and he is us.” Asmost of you already knew, ourscore of 60.1 is in the "B" rangethat the judges use, and is acomposite or average of theaverages of all six of the judges.Interesting that the Musicaverage of 63.3 was the highestof the three (Music, Singing,Presentation). Judge Wigleytold us that the "ASH Set" was avery “strong” set - probably inthe upper 70s; with theconsideration that it be performed that way.Makes you think ...”what if...”, doesn't it? If youare interested in what goes on in the pit and whatmotivates their scores, comments and such, justgo to the Society website and download the“Contest and JudgingHandbook.” If you want to printit out, go ahead, but the wholething runs over 200 pages andthat’s a lot of paper and ink! Andthese guys are good. Don’t everdoubt it. They are extremelywell-schooled quartet guys, chorus guys, directors, coaches, arrangers, composers, teachersand a few professionalmusicians thrown in. They careabout our hobby and we havemany mutual interests.Furthermore, like us , they arevolunteers, too. So please don’tbe too hard on them. From the comments at the "A &R" (Analysis and

Recommendation) Session, again - we didn’t havemajor problems, but awhole bunch of middlin’stuff that needs to becleaned up. To becompetent, taken from theJudges’ score sheet, wecan’t ignore sloppy attacksand releases, which causesmini times when we getright notes at the wrongtime = out of tune (at least)and not ringing. We have topronounce the text all thesame, we have to all be ontop of the notes of thechord. And, all the middlin’stuff that goes along with. So, we went and we had a

good time being pretty darn entertaining.Let’s get this done, andthen we canconcentrate onbeing consistent.

Bob SlaneyAlthough several members of the chorusmade valuable contributions to the success ofthe various programs and initiatives for 2010,when it came time to reflect on the singleindividual who was most consistent andsteadfast in his support of the mission, Mr. BobSlaney quickly rose to the top.As president of the Marietta Chapter, itbecame clear that true success for ourorganization would be found by empoweringthose individuals with a desire to serve, acommitment to move the chorus forward in apositive way and those with a strong workethic to participate fully in the governance ofchapter affairs. Bob Slaney is one of thoseindividuals. His tireless efforts, his 3 a.m. e-mail updates

and hisdedica-tion toimprov-ing ourprogramformat atrehear-sals havebeenappreci-ated byall. Inparticular, as president, I’ve enjoyed having a‘comrade in arms’, a ‘strong wing man’ and adependable colleague who has been willing tojump in to any issue or challenge with energyand enthusiasm. Sandy Sanders coordinated our performance at the Hearts for Heroescelebration at the Strand on March 10, 2011. Sandy worked with Captain

Alan Price, event chairman, to make this event a tremendous success. After the Big Chicken’s performance, Alan wrote the following to Sandy:Sandy,

Well, we pulled it off and it was, in my humble opinion, a night that exceeded even myhigh expectations. The BCC was spectacular, great, perfect to kick off the evening. There are

no adjectives that adequately describe how good you guys were. I hope you can pass my thanks andadmiration along to the entire group, and let them know what a special addition they were to the evening. Iknow it was a tough night in that a rehearsal was scheduled later but we’ll have to insure any futureinvolvement is without conflict to allow the group to stay and enjoy the program. They missed seeing what abig part of a great night they were. Thanks again, Sandy, for your help, support, and encouragement. All were wonderful.“Just happy to be here, boss!”Alan

Membership-Whose job is it anyway? The answer to this question is easy: it is yours. It reallybelongs to all of us.How many of you receive the society magazine the Harmonizer? Do you read it before yousend it sailing into the recycle bin? As most of you know, I have accepted the task of growing the membership. Terry Morrisondid a fine job during his tenure. It will be difficult to follow in his wake. Where do I start? Whatdo I say? I decided to start with the membership list from our web site. Did you know we haveseventy-eight members and thirty-three of those are inactive? That is a good place to start. I spent an hour writing an e-mail and addressed it to all thirty-three of them. Within an hourand a half, I had received a response from two. Thanks for writing, they replied. We had tomove for health reasons or a warmer climate. Both parties remain society members eventhough they are not singing any longer. One promised a visit one day. The other I suggested hemight think about a visit. I would say at this point that is fair return on my investment, after all, I am not seeking anymore than a simple answer to the question, “Hi, how you have been?” Now back to the point. Communication among ourselves is of utmost importance. But alsoimportant are our contacts with our friends and neighbors, co-workers and yes-even strangerson the street. Or folks you conduct business or play golf or tennis with. People you sharesupper at church with. Or people you meet during any other activity you pursue. These areresources for you to pursue when you are active. The Harmonizer publication is an excellent tool to help us as individuals and as a chapter tosharpen our skills, seek encouragement, read about those chapters who are embracing the skilland talents of others because they read about them in our very own magazine. I urge you toread the president’s page by Alan Lansom. In the most recent issue Jan-Feb 2011, Alan statesthat “Every barbershopper must tell everyone he meets about his love of music and ofbarbershop harmony, and the love and fellowship among the members of his chapter andbetween all barbershoppers.” He also talks about how we have something great to offer theworld - a medium so wonderful that we can use to express ourselves and communicate song.Lastly, Alan talks about our chapters’ membership goals for 2011. I, as membership VP, can set any goal I deem necessary. If I did so it would draw muchattention and comment - I am certain of this. After all, setting a goal is merely an attempt toinvoke action. Therefore, I am not going to play that game. Instead, I am asking you to take thisarticle to heart, know that even if you bring one man to visit, you are making a valid attempt togrow the chapter membership. Membership is not about being a “Man of Note” although when Joe announces milestones,we all applaud. Membership is about goodwill, meeting once or more every week to sing, conduct business, or participate in a committee, anything that goes the extra mile is what weneed. With that, growth will come - more friends, tenors (I hope), a larger stage presence forboth local shows and contests. You know the job is a daunting one, you knowhow to recruit visitors and potential newmembers. I will be doing my part. You can help.

MEMORIES OF DIXIE DISTRICTCONTESTS & CONVENTIONS

The Dixie District Contest and Convention is held twice a year, in the spring and fall. Thecompetition brings together choruses and quartets from Barbershop Harmony Society

chapters throughout the district, currently made up of the states of Alabama,Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee. North and South Carolina were in the DixieDistrict until 2010 when the Carolinas District was formed. Each contest bringsback memories of the wonderful history of the Marietta Chapter Big ChickenChorus and the many quartets that included members of our chapter that havecompeted since the chapter received its charter in 1986. Information is available

on our website under the tab “About Us”, The Dixie District. Some of the chapter’saccomplishments found in BCC newletters from the early years are provided here. Enjoy!

Ralph (“Fumbles”) Peckham, Editquarterbackof THE BIG CHICKEN CHIT...CHAT, reported inthe October, 1989, edition with this headline:“By the Skin of Our Beaks...DIXIE DISTRICTCHAMPS!”“On Saturday afternoon, October 7, the Big

Chicken Chorus won its first-ever DixieDistrict championship and the right torepresent the District at the 1990 SPEBSQAInternational Convention chorus competitionin San Francisco next July. It was not onlythe first district-level victory for the four-year-old Big Chickens, it was the firstappearance in the competition for ChorusDirector Clay Hine and for manyof the other69 Marietta chapter members on the risers inAsheville.”“The win, by the narrow margin of twopoints, was achieved against excellentchoruses with recent Internationalexperience... Now, the REAL work begins aswe raise funds and our performing level forour appearance in San Francisco.

the headline article by the editor, Jim Spriggs:“What a contest! Can you believe theexcitement in SAVANNAH. ...“Nineteen choruses assembled on the stageto compete for the coveted trophy and whenall was “sung and done”, THE BIG CHICKENCHORUS once again proved that practice anddedication makes a difference. With 88 menon stage THE BIG CHICKENS scored 996points to finish first....”

The October, 1991 edition of the Chit...Chathighlights the Big Chicken accomplishmentsin Huntsville, with a headline article by JackSweitzer, “Big Chicken & FRED Sweep upGold in Rocket City”:“While the Braves were winning and theDodgers losing, the Big Chickens and theirRooster Booster contingent were wingingtheir way to Huntsville, AL to defend their

Dixie District championship crown... The BCCwas first on stage Saturday afternoon, andperhaps that was a lucky draw, for we got towitness the other excellent competingchoruses... But when the counting was done, and we were entertained by some greatJamboree quartets, we were thrilled to learnwe took first place and with it the right andobligation to represent the District in NewOrleans next July.”“The Dixie District Chorus Championship wasnot the only thrill for Marietta: five, count’em, FIVE quartets with Big Chickenscompeted in the terrific quartet contest. And,when the scoring dust settled from thejudges’ pit, our own FRED, Carlson, LaRosa,C. Hine, Clay, (“cause they wax ‘emfunny”...crazy stuff!) emerged numero uno!”

The October, 1992 edition of the Chit...Chatheadline, “Marietta Repeats District’s “TripleCrown”, reports of the repeat by the MariettaChapter as Dixie District’s Triple CrownWinner (Chorus, Quartet and Auxilary) duringthe District convention in Columbia. JackSweitzer writes:“Marietta’s Big Chicken Chorus (BCC) beganthe gold rush by taking first place in theChorus contest, against some terrific

competition from 14 other excellentcompetitors. This hard-earned victory for theBCC was its fourth district crown in a row -an unprecedented feat.”“Fort Knox also was producing gold for oneof Marietta’s quartets. Marietta participatedin three district contest entries, and when thesmoke cleared in that competition, “Talk ofthe South” (John Ward, Dave Philo, RickWord, Jeff Selano) took top honors. Whatterrific sounds! But close behind in secondwas “Bachelor Party” (David Balentine, JedBrooks, Rich Stanford, Chris Richards). The third star of Marietta’s “Triple Crown”goes to the Rooster Boosters, who take allthe pressure off singing. What marveloussupport. But, they’re singers of renown intheir own right, as they serenaded us intypical RB tradition before the contest.”
